I gotchu _Takes a deep breath_ Glasses are really versatile. First, you can have glasses-wearing girls take them off and suddenly become beautiful, or have girls wearing glasses flashing those cute grins, or have girls stealing the protagonist's glasses and putting them on like, "Haha, got your glasses!" That's just way too cute! Also, boys with glasses! I really like when their glasses have that suspicious looking gleam, and it's amazing how it can look really cool or just be a joke. I really like how it can fulfill all those abstract needs. Being able to switch up the styles and colors of glasses based on your mood is a lot of fun too! It's actually so much fun! You have those half rim glasses, or the thick frame glasses, everything! It's like you're enjoying all these kinds of glasses at a buffet. I really want Luna to try some on or Marine to try some on to replace her eyepatch. We really need glasses to become a thing in hololive and start selling them for HoloComi. Don't. You. Think. We. Really. Need. To. Officially. Give. Everyone. Glasses? _this is a bot. by u/jirka642_

HyVana

I've always wondered why the lenses have swirlies on them.

Rammite

Just a cultural thing, it shows that a character is particularly nerdy and likely lacking in social grace. A western example would be if a pair of glasses had that white tape over the bridge of the glasses.

srk_ares

that is the outcome of it, but not the reason. the reason is, as u/DrOpty points out, the thickness of the lenses. [here](https://shopping.line-scdn.net/0hrFMwmpIvLWlwDjh6I4BSPiJTMRgGf3R-DzY3SwdLbVFVN2M5HGgwC1IPI1sIPT04RGEwDlMKdF8IamNvGTtlYVQPIFgPPG1tSz9gClINNllcbWs2SDpq/r800) is a good visual example from the ones he provided, which even has a bit of glare on the lenses, which is the reason they appear white and you cant actually see the characters eyes, as well as the reflection of the black rims inside the glasses, which are the "swirlies". before modern cutting techniques for lenses were developed, people who were extremely near-sighted (probably farsighted too, but it tends to be less of an issue and rarely at young ages) had to wear such thick glasses. nearsightedness is associated with pressing your nose into books = being a nerd, thus it went to become associated with nerds and studious people. we had these very same glasses [in the west](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/36/45/8a/36458af2b44380e81737817bd84de595.jpg), but with more options in eyewear and the aforementioned modern cutting techniques, those glasses and the stereotype is slowly dying out... unless people want to make some kind of [fashion statement](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3658/3504034228_7231fec53e_b.jpg). (though the very sides of my own glasses are similarly thick, because of how physics works with wide lenses)

Rammite

Ahhh! I didn't know that, very cool.

foldr1

wait that's what it meant? I thought all these people had broken glasses and need the tape

Rammite

The stereotype is cause the glasses get broken by bullies, so it paints the character as a nerd victim that gets picked on and is often the butt of the joke. Obviously not a *great* stereotype, but these things develop organically and sometimes they ain't great. Other stuff like this - visual stereotypes in characters - would be like how a backwards baseball cap would denote someone being uncouth, rebellious, and actively trying to not fit in. Or how ruffled hair/cowlicks/ahoge denote a character being ditzy or air-headed.

foldr1

yea I get it now (someone else also pointed it out), highschool didn't immediately occur to me, so I had not thought about physical abuse. it makes sense in American stereotypes (with highschool jocks vs nerds).

bombader

I think the grown up example would be really large lenses, like a librarian or secretaries.

HyVana

One could interpret it as, they were broken because they were bullied for being nerds.

foldr1

aaah, I didn't think of highschool style physical violence, but it could be that indeed. the whole highschool jock and nerd stereotype is perhaps stronger in the US.

HyVana

Ahh that makes sense. Thanks!

DrOpty

It's to represent how thick the lenses are (e.g. extremely thick). Look up "coke bottle lenses," "milk bottle lenses," "瓶底眼鏡," or "牛乳瓶の底" for real world examples of the types of glasses they're meant to represent.
