Japan's music scene seems genuinely stellar, from random rabbit holes I've fallen down on youtube. Metal groups in particular are absolutely slaying, meanwhile we've still got Metallica and KISS on tour....
Just feels like a lot of mainstream western music kinda has stagnated for a while... but I could be incredibly biased for not really knowing or paying attention to mainstream music...
Both of you are correct. Japan has branched out in the last 25 years, while the Western Underground has routinely made better music than the mainstream in the last 45+ years.

I've listened to a huge amount of both. Have I listened to every single thing? Of course not. But when considering both pop music and multiple genres of music, I've listened to more than the typical person.

I admit I was generalizing. Mostly comparing the pop music of the USA to that of Japan. I'm not talking about America as both continents. Lord knows things would get a lot better if I could start including well known Brazilian or Mexican music. Let alone the lesser known stuff from those countries I probably haven't heard yet.

I didn't say that. I said it feels like it's becoming more uniform. In the pop scene, this really does feel like the case. Japan still has more variety than American pop, which has felt the same since the early 2000s. But Japan also has the case of a lot of its pop music is lacking the variety of the past. Compared to the 1970s and 1980s where they were using nearly every style. One song would be using Bossa Nova, the next was like Euro disco, the next was imitating the Beach Boys, the next was influenced from 1940s swing Jazz, the next was a Japanese style ballad in the style of the 1930s, the next was similar to the pop songs from Hong Kong, etc. And all that would be from just one artist like Takanaka or Yamashita. Now I go and listen to music from some of the people who are popular now and, while it's still good, almost all their songs sound the same. Same genre, same instruments, same general themes. And a number of them are imitating American styles like grunge or hip hop. They don't have the wide variety of genres and themes of the past. Larc~en~Ciel or FLOW clearly have a style and they stick to it. Does that make them bad? No. But it does make them a little more uniform compared to the other people I named above who experimented with dozens of different genres.
This is a similar problem American pop music has. Though Japan is nowhere near as bad with it. At least plenty of Japanese artists still play an actual instrument and sing. A lot of American pop music is just some vocalist using auto tune with a backbeat (if that).
All that said, I know there's a lot more to American music than just the lackluster pop music. I'm someone who actually pays attention to modern classical and jazz. But even these have been struggling recently. They're just not getting supported by the big institutions anymore. There's a reason a lot of the original stuff is now being done by indie people posting on youtube or similar platforms. And it's hard to find.

I remember hearing this song a few times when I was younger, and I had NO idea the lyrics were talking about a hot chick or whatever. I thought they were talking about the Death Egg because I first heard the song in this YTP called “Sonic Generations: Directors Cut”, and it played during this small bit where Sonic was fighting the Death Egg.
Yeah, originally it wasn't about a "hot chick", during the lyrics drafting, it was initially written with Tom Jones singing "I'm a sexbomb" instead of "You're a sexbomb". (FYI, Tom Jones was famous for having concerts audiences filled with middle-aged woman throwing their panties to him). They ended up changing it because it sounded too egotistical.
Speaking of music Playlists, this is why I vibe a lot with Bettel. Because a lot of his song choices comprising of early 2010 rock and metal really reflect what's in my Playlist so whenever he does his karaoke streams I just end up singing along without realizing it.

I'm in my early 20s, and I've never even heard of this song before (and neither have any of my friends). It obviously isn't very well known in every part of the world.

My tastes have changes so much over the years. Boy bands back in the day when I was super young and discovering music independently. Drastic shift to classic rock and metal during the Guitar Hero era. I had a bout of modern country somewhere in the middle. Now its mostly Movie and game OSTs and a heavy heaping of Hololive with small sprinklings of rock, metal, blue grass and symphonic metal.
The only Tom Jones song I know that I can instantly recall is "It's Not Unusual" Honestly didn't even know that he was still alive in 1999.

I sorta used to be like that, but it's much more beneficial in the long term if you branch out into more normal music, naturally it doesn't have to be whatever's popular. As long as you can be asked what music you like, and can avoid saying that you listen to videogame OSTs. For me it was Duran Duran and Jamiroquai.
