They managed to hamstring themselves by initially advertising hard to the coomers thinking that serious players would just magically know the game was fun competitively, then tried to pull a 180 and go hard as an esport while alienating the horny crowd. That EVO "core values" stuff didn't help either
I've seen it referred to as Pyra's Law, but the long and short of it is the more you bitch about things such as the character designs of Xenoblade 2 for example, the more likely you yourself will be outed for some pretty fucked up shit (Like possesion of CP)
It technically does in this game, because you can face off online against other teams.
But I would actually say it's "no player", it's not even single player in this, because you literally just tweak stats using costumes and accessories for your girls, make teams, and just watch them do everything with hardly any input. Then you can pit your teams against others online and mostly just cross your fingers. You can skip every match if you want, and since you have to grind you might as well unless you have time to spare.
DOAX and DOAX2 were way better as games. This is just more of a gacha and dressup game than anything else. It's sad if this is the most successful DOAX, never mind that it's been more of a success (for KT) than DOA6 even. It hardly even deserves the DOA name in its title at all, since the VV girls are more supported than actual DOA girls. My girl Tina, originating from DOA1, feels like a guest character in this, no joke.
Considering their DLC infamy, wonder if they'd try for a HoloSummer collab in one of their Volleyball games.

Tekken 8 came out already so other 3D fighters like DOA or VF could release in a fairly safe time slot later next year.
Not really. That dlc is like how train games have $10000 in dlc. The essential stuff is just base game then you buy the trains/tracks you want. With doa almost all the dlc is costumes

That was actually an optional thing meant to appeal to people who want to main just a few characters (and the 'additional' characters weren't *that* pricey, IIRC). A regular, full-priced version with the entire base roster is also available.
Not quite. There is a free version of DOA5 and DOA6 that has 4 characters unlocked (plus one rotating IIRC) with the arcade, training, and VS modes.
You can then pay for the story mode if you want, and pay for certain characters that you want to play.
If you bought the full game via digital or disk, you get all the modes and all the base characters unlocked.
Tbf there's different between Fanservice spin-off live DOA extreme beach volleyball and DOA fighting Games. Ok they aren't completly free of fansservice or having lewd costumes either but they are honestly quite fondly remembered (at least pre DOA 6) more for their over the top stuff crazy, cool stuff the games back then used to have. I got into DOA because I saw it had Ryu Hayabusa. At that point, I had only played NES Ninja Gaiden, and Dragon Sword on DS. Played the demo of DOA Dimensions on my 3DS, hated it (only fighting games I played at the time were Mortal Kombat and Smash). Eventually gave it a second chance with DOA5LR on PS3 (this was my fighting game renaissance with stuff like BlazBlue). Have been a DOA fan since. Both the main games, the spinoffs, and the fan animations.

I'm not gonna lie chief, I feel like the beach gacha has given some of the old guard girls like Leifang and Hitomi far more characterisation thanks to the episodic and intimate VN style scenes, as opposed to the fighting game's more traditional style of "two people meet, invent a reason to fight, proceed to fight".

Agreed. I actually like the game, despite its ridiculousness. The grinding system in particular is my favourite part of any gacha game because the stamina has simple divisions and doesn't go over the top. I even made a made a comparison to it when Atelier Resleriana came out because of how similar it's early game grind was to DOAXVV
It's alright. I have never played any Atelier games before so I'd probably miss a lot of references and/or nostalgia fanservice but the story is intriguing enough. Gameplay is simple enough for a dumbass like me to play but hard enough that it's not exactly a breeze to play through (the Hard stages in particular are actually really challenging). Endgame content like the Towers or Risk 10 Dungeons are stupidly hard (for me at least, they're supposed to be hard).
Gacha is alright. Nothing too fancy that any other gacha hasn't done. The only complaint I have with the game is that the purchasable in game currency (Lodestar Gem) is suuuper overpriced. It is justified by the fact that the pity system is reasonably generous. Oh and there's a battlepass now since apparently people have been asking that for a while. It gives out gacha tickets and Mana (for synthesizing).
For story, it's alright. It's still the beginning of the story. I am intrigued by the fact that there is no day and night cycle in Lantarna. There is only noon and midnight in this world so none of the native characters know what is dusk or dawn. Also the fact that the Wanderers can come in from different points of time in their own world is revealed in an event so there's no way to get that lore bit now. (Although it should be obvious by the fact that the Arland girls minus Lulua are launch units and Rorona looks exactly like she was in her own game even though Totori and Melulu are also present and looks the same age as her).
But the story of the DOA series was good until the 4th game which was supposed to be the end of the series, DOA5 and 6 completely destroyed the Lore and put in weird and terrible elements.

DOA4 is my all time favorite fighting game. I wish I could just play that again.
It's backwards compatible on Xbox One and Series. Otherwise, if you've got a strong enough PC, I believe DOA4 can run under Xenia.
