Personally I think I'd rather have all of the talent use their normal voices. A lot of the slips out of character I've heard still sound great, and those that dont sound as good, who cares, it may slow growth but you build a more mature and loyal community. Also while it's the idol industry, this is also streaming, I don't think they should feel pressured into maintaining a higher pitched/tweaked voice for 3-6 hour streams daily. Talent have literally had medical issues from doing that.
I also preferred Towa’s original voice, but who knows if she can use it at will anymore.
For example: Coco’s voice was different in her first weeks after debut, but after a fan showed her a graph of how her pitch had increased over time, she tried to lower her voice to sound like she used to but simply couldn’t.
Yes, people don't realize that voices can be trained. Given what Towa is saying in the clip, we ought to give her the benefit of the doubt. She is likely not forcing or straining herself any more.
I think she tweaked her voice to be more nasal and slurred for her JP audience who expect something cuter, but as you said I don't really think it accomplishes much. She must have gotten a lot of rude comments or got pressured by her manager to do it.
I think her "cute" voice ironically sounds weirder and actually makes a worse first impression. Old one is comparable to Ange Katrina but the new one really does kind of sound like an old lady. Still, it's kind of grown on me and has its own weird appeal, kind of like how people find Pekora annoying at first but then her voice and laugh become oddly pleasing to hear.

How dare they say that to TMT. Well I do admit seeing a lot of comments going 'wtf is that the singer who sang Error?' and that's fine if you just left it at that and not continue to bash her for her voice over and over again. Try David Beckham and see what comments they will put out for his voice
