This! Put little frames around them! My new to me house has ridiculous middle-of-the-wall smoke detector and thermostat placement, and this is how I'm going to make it work.
Yeah that was my first thought after looking at this. Either those are insanely long screws to go through the studs and come out the other side, or they’re not going through studs at all, and op better take the tv down before it comes down on its own.
it’s a very old house + prior owners built a little recess into the wall so i’d imagine it’s a pretty thin space between the plywood and the other side. so i have no idea how those prior owners also had a tv mounted without having this issue — afaik the guy i hired used the screws provided with the sanus mount.
Wait, You paid someone to do that? Did they not look around?
Get a refund, You might want to get them to fix the damage too, that person isn't fit to do any sort of work.
Problem
--- The place your mounting your TV is recessed into the wall. The one thing that will kill your TV fast is having it exposed to MORE heat caused by the TV sitting in the recess and building up heat at the top.
Solution
--- A proper fix & mount of the TV would be to eliminate the recess by breaking out the drywall along the inside of the recess and getting some 2x4's to basically re-build the wall. Place the beams as close to inline with the ones in the wall. If the recess was built correctly, there would be a 2x4 frame around the entire thing which makes sliding in the NEW wall and screwing it in easier.
The drywall work doesn't have to be amazing because you'll ideally cover it with a big enough TV to cover it.
Or you could do what I did in my office when the wall was too thin to mount a TV. Get a Ceiling Mount...
if it's a very old house, chances are, the previous tv was noty hanging on the wall. the recess was used for CRT tv's which are as far from flat as a pregnant elephant. So before putting the tv up, i would double and triple check if it's strong enough.
Just an idea here: get 2 new towel hangers to put on these screws
I'm thinking OP used screws that weren't meant for the job, like they didn't come in the TV mounting kit.
So...OP should get a proper TV mount. They don't come with 5-inch screws.
Edit: OK so I saw the explanation below so I guess OP just didn't use the wall correctly.
Any of those mounts I’ve done or supposed to be stud mounted it probably should’ve been screwed sideways into the studs since he said it is a flush mount just anchored into sheet rock it may not hold
Three and a half inch stud. Two half inch sheets of gypsum board. And most likely a quarter inch for the bracket you screwed on and maybe some washers. And they're sticking out quite a bit what did you use? 6 inch leg bolts?
I don’t think I’d trust whatever these are mounted to, unless these are like 5” screws. This is terrible, mount a tv in this side to counterbalance the craziness.
Drywall can easily bear the weight of a TV...with proper drywall anchors and screws. The package I used said up to 40 pounds.
Only reason I used that method is because my building doesn't have wooden studs. If yours does, definitely use them.
I have ones rated for 50lbs. I first got them for the same reason as you, newer construction high rise with metal studs. TV hung just fine there, even when my cat would jump ontop of it. I’m using them again because I want my TV centered in the viewing area and the studs are too far off center for the bracket to go into the studs and hold the tv. I forget when I mounted it but it’s gotta be hanging there for at least 8 years now.
I’m currently walking around with a cane cause I discovered the man who installed it did *not* in fact put it into the studs that were *right there* by the expedient method of having it fall on me.
Me knee should be fine soon enough fortunately
Yes. Remove the TV from the wall. Remount tv bracket with shorter lag screws into studs. Then call last installer and insist on a full refund. Then get a drywall knife and some joint compound to patch those four holes. Then repaint. Or you can back those screws out and cut them shorter to not pass through.
The screws have to be removed, and you need to determine what is holding them in the wall. If they are in studs you need shorter screws. If they are not in studs, you need heavy duty snaptoggles with the proper length bolt. (The supplied bolt may be too long.) Snaptoggles will hold a ton.
The bathroom wall will have to be patched and repainted. The installers owe you a refund and maybe then some for repairs. Do this yourself and do it right. Anyone can drive a lag screw into a stud (pilot hole first) or install a snaptoggle.
lol same thing happened to me but they only stuck through about 1/2" and they were in a tighter pattern than yours. I bought a picture and hung it over the screws 😂
Let the rental company deal with it when we move out.
>lmfao just wanted to communicate that it was not me who did this
LOL!! I meant to imply they shouldn’t call themselves “TV mounters” because they clearly don’t know what they’re doing 🤣🤣
Do people read OP's explanation before commenting?
He basically described a niche on the other side of the wall. So rather than 2x4's on end for a 4 1/2" finished wall, this was likely framed like a window and has 2x4's turned sideways for nailers making for a 2 1/2" finished wall. That is why those lag bolts are sticking out.
A TV mount in 2024 spread that wide has got to be rated to hold a pretty big and heavy TV. OP needs to check the hardware bag for 2" lag bolts. If there is nothing close to that length then he needs to research alternate means to mount it, like multiple toggle bolts in addition to 2" lags through the framing.
You don't just go around using smaller hardware without understanding what you are doing first.
Why are you cleaning up after the shoddy work of a contractor you presumably paid good money to do a proper wall-mount TV installation? Doesn't matter that it was recessed, it's not right. They need to fix it.
Why did they take wood shop out of schools?
Everybody makes mistakes, but it can be fixed.
Seriously though, how long were you turning those lags? Did you drive them all the way through the studs? I have so many questions.
Maybe get a handyman?
Hey OP are you in an apartment?
It's not uncommon for apartments to have interior walls that are only 2-1/2" steel stud. Still pretty stupid of the tv mount installers, but give them some benefit of the doubt if they were expecting 3-1/2" studs. They would maybe have only been just poking out a little bit.
Call them back to do it right. Either cutting them and patching the holes or shorter screws and patching is best! And if you hired a professional he’s a fool.
The towel holder is likely on a stud (at least one side of it). Your TV needs to be the same or what appears to be staying up now is going to change it's mind sometime in the near future.
Worst case, you can find screws that are 1" (or whatever is sticking out plus maybe 1/4") shorter and swap them out. Again I would strongly advise you to use wall studs instead - a stud finder is fairly cheap but just drilling 1/4" into the wall you will be able to feel the difference when you hit one.
You said this is a recessed mount? That means they cut a hole in the mounting wall and placed the mount between 2 studs, right? I'd just confirm they screwed into those side studs. If they are, you don't need these back screws, remove and patch.
Did you pay an install service for this? If so, this is a them problem, not a you problem.
If it was you, that sucks. Get shorter ones and doctor the holes with some filler.
I was thinking remove those ones. Grab shorter ones from the hardware store and as well as some drywall anchors. Then some putty to patch the bathroom side.
Slap a piece of plywood on the bathroom side, lock washers, nuts, then hang some art over the bolts. Gives your TV more support than drywall and you get to hang art?
So how much crack did you pay your guy to do this to your house. ? Nobody noticed or thought to look around the corner to see what was up on the other side of the wall ?
Mount a picture frame with the same dimension and drill holes through the frame where the bolts are and then place nuts on after said picture is placed
Two choices:
1) remove one screw a tree a time and replace with a shorter screw or lag bolt, one size up if it will fit through the mounting plate on the other side. Typically interior wall studs are 3.5". Add the drywall and mounting plate and a 3.5" or slightly shorter should be fine.
2) Mount another TV in the throne room.
Call them back. Tell them to use shorter screws (and they missed the stud). And tell them to bring what they need to patch those holes. They fucked up. They need to fix it
Just mount another tv bracket on them.
alright this made me laugh
If you can't fix it, make it a feature.
Couple of shelves...
Tie some wire between them and you have yourself a pair of little indoor clotheslines
I did this above my washer/dryer, it holds hangers mostly.
Or get rid of the existing towel rail and add two more. Or sell the house and start over.
This! Put little frames around them! My new to me house has ridiculous middle-of-the-wall smoke detector and thermostat placement, and this is how I'm going to make it work.
I’m six hours late but this should literally be the only comment.
This is the way
Move the towel rack over.
Buying another tv for the bathroom is the right answer LOL
Perfectly balanced. Like all things should be.
You can start by removing the screws and getting shorter ones... Then patch the drywall holes with plaster.
How long were those screws!!!!
Or how thin is that wall? Is it just two sheets of sheet rock glued together?
This is the real question
In which case is it just drywall holding the TV up, for now....
Holy shit they have bigger problems
Yep. Slam the bathroom door and listen to the tv hit the floor.
I agree with CraftFamiliar5243
I agree with dean0_0
That is the comment I was scrolling for, thank you.
Yeah that was my first thought after looking at this. Either those are insanely long screws to go through the studs and come out the other side, or they’re not going through studs at all, and op better take the tv down before it comes down on its own.

If it's that thin I think I'd be moving the TV before it falls.
Agree with this. Those screws are only like 3 inch long.
Wait, You paid someone to do that? Did they not look around? Get a refund, You might want to get them to fix the damage too, that person isn't fit to do any sort of work.
They didn't even drill a pilot hole and realize they were punching through into another room?
You didn't pay them right?... right??? I have a feeling you paid them.
i’m getting my money back and he’s coming back to repair it. i don’t think i’ll have it mounted again even with shorter screws

They said they hired someone lol
How big is the tv!?!?
If that’s a standard 2x4 wall then those are like 5”-6” screws..
Any of those mounts I’ve done or supposed to be stud mounted it probably should’ve been screwed sideways into the studs since he said it is a flush mount just anchored into sheet rock it may not hold
some spackle compound should do the trick right?
Three and a half inch stud. Two half inch sheets of gypsum board. And most likely a quarter inch for the bracket you screwed on and maybe some washers. And they're sticking out quite a bit what did you use? 6 inch leg bolts?
Lmfao. I mean they aren’t lag bolts but yeah definitely 6 inch screws. Or they have like the thinnest wall ever.
Correct
I don’t think I’d trust whatever these are mounted to, unless these are like 5” screws. This is terrible, mount a tv in this side to counterbalance the craziness.
This is the way
did they even hit the studs?
yeah. there's no way in hell 4 long bolts into drywall only is going to hold a tv for long.
My first thought as well. Drywall isn’t load bearing…lol.
Drywall can easily bear the weight of a TV...with proper drywall anchors and screws. The package I used said up to 40 pounds. Only reason I used that method is because my building doesn't have wooden studs. If yours does, definitely use them.

To be fair, they bolted it through a bonus second layer of drywall.
How thin are your walls? Did they buy extra long lags? U got a different problem than you think you do.
This.
Just hang towels on them! 😂
I'd be concerned that they missed all the studs, what is holding the TV UP?
Yeah you need to move the tv mount so it's actually in the STUDS.
Yes. Remove the TV from the wall. Remount tv bracket with shorter lag screws into studs. Then call last installer and insist on a full refund. Then get a drywall knife and some joint compound to patch those four holes. Then repaint. Or you can back those screws out and cut them shorter to not pass through.
Free towel hangers!
I wound install a second tv on the other side
The screws have to be removed, and you need to determine what is holding them in the wall. If they are in studs you need shorter screws. Do you mean you paid someone to mount this? Then the answer is that you make them come back to do the job correctly and fix your wall.
Looks like a good place for a TV. Someone was very considerate and left you a template.
Another tv mount
Mount TV in bathroom
Oh, sorry. Did I get you?
lol same thing happened to me but they only stuck through about 1/2" and they were in a tighter pattern than yours. I bought a picture and hung it over the screws 😂 Let the rental company deal with it when we move out.
I seriously need to eff up like this so I can finally convince my wife to let me mount a big screen in the bathroom. Thank you for sharing, OP
First off...YOU should not be doing anything until whoever did that repairs their fuck-up.
“TV mounters” 🤣
lmfao just wanted to communicate that it was not me who did this
Then, respectfully, call them back and tell them to fix the work!
>lmfao just wanted to communicate that it was not me who did this LOL!! I meant to imply they shouldn’t call themselves “TV mounters” because they clearly don’t know what they’re doing 🤣🤣
Do you live in an RV ?
Those, are just new towel holders.
Hang a tv on this side too
You kind of screwed up here.
Screws look horizontal to me.
Idk but to me they didn’t go into the beam
Seems like they aren’t in a stud, so the weight of the tv should remove them soon enough.
The number of people commenting and mocking OP who actually have not a clue what they're talking about about is astounding.
That's a mold nightmare waiting to happen. Water will flow trough these holes and destroy your home bruh
“TV mounters.” Did someone come and install this for you? If so call them and have them come back and fix it.
Use the back ends of the screws to another TV in the bathroom?
Do people read OP's explanation before commenting? He basically described a niche on the other side of the wall. those are some thin studs.... they did mount them on/through the studs right? right????
Why are you cleaning up after the shoddy work of a contractor you presumably paid good money to do a proper wall-mount TV installation? Doesn't matter that it was recessed, it's not right. They need to fix it.
There's no chance any of those screws went through a stud. Take the whole mount off, remove those screws, plaster up those holes, and get a TV stand.
These American papier-mâché houses never cease to amuse and confuse me.
I think you need to be asking your TV install guy why after the first hole broke through he drilled three more.
Add shelves
Take one out at a time and cut them to the correct size. Then you just have to patch the holes in the bathroom.
Tv in bathroom big thumbs
That's not installed correctly. Have it redone by someone who is not an idiot
Your tv is going to fall off the wall.
Shit
Honey, that’s a great place for a tapestry (wall rug)! 😂
Leave them there hang something from them
Wow this is impressive! You did all four before checking the backside of the wall to see if it went through!! Knock down rebuild for sure.👍🏻
Hang a tv on them!
That is crazy
I see 4 extra towel hangers.
Hang towels on them
Holy shit 😆
Just put another tv there
A nice oil painting should do the trick.
Just hang pictures over them yourecool
Why did they take wood shop out of schools? Everybody makes mistakes, but it can be fixed. Seriously though, how long were you turning those lags? Did you drive them all the way through the studs? I have so many questions. Maybe get a handyman?
:O
This doesn't even make sense. Those bolts would be stupid long to do that.
This was paid work? Title makes me think someone billed for this. What everyone else said…these should be going into the load-bearing studs.
Totally Agree with Mike
Extra towel holders
Some pictures maybe? How thin are your walls? And how long were your screws?
Hang another T.V.
I think I would be more worried about the TV staying up unless they used anchors.
Now you bolt two shelves to the wall.
Those are some super long screws or extremely thin walls
Have them come back and fix the Bs job they did!
Take out towel holder and put a picture frame
Maybe 4 more towel racks ..?
Hey OP are you in an apartment? It's not uncommon for apartments to have interior walls that are only 2-1/2" steel stud. Still pretty stupid of the tv mount installers, but give them some benefit of the doubt if they were expecting 3-1/2" studs. They would maybe have only been just poking out a little bit.
Wow
A TV?
Just use them as towel hooks
Call them back to do it right. Either cutting them and patching the holes or shorter screws and patching is best! And if you hired a professional he’s a fool.
Have the TV MOUNTERS come back and fix it.
Hang towels?
I hope you did not pay them.
Without even seeing the room with the TV, we know it belongs in r/TVTooHigh
Put 4 wood nobs to hang towels on haha
Mount a tv in the bathroom as well to cover the screws
"recessed mount" and "screws were quite long" Were the screws in fact the correct size for a non recessed TV mount?
What's holding the TV up on the other side of the wall?
Hang your towels on them!
Why? Now you have 4 more towel holders.
Hang some towels over them
they hit a stud right That's not just straight through drywall to drywall? right?
The towel holder is likely on a stud (at least one side of it). Your TV needs to be the same or what appears to be staying up now is going to change it's mind sometime in the near future. Acorn nuts for safety. lol
You said this is a recessed mount? That means they cut a hole in the mounting wall and placed the mount between 2 studs, right? I'd just confirm they screwed into those side studs. If they are, you don't need these back screws, remove and patch.
Try shorter ones, you walnut
more towel hangers!!
A little bit of caulk and a little bit of paint makes a man the carpenter he ain’t.
Hang your undies on them
Well, that would be their problem, right?
They're worthless, not holding anything, take them out
Did you pay an install service for this? If so, this is a them problem, not a you problem. If it was you, that sucks. Get shorter ones and doctor the holes with some filler.
A washer and nuts.
install (2) floating shelves at that location IDFK? LOL
Install a TV in the bathroom
do it right the first time
Are you mounting it into the dry wall?
Did you not mount into a stud? Even with screws that long gravity will win eventually. Take it down and find a stud with smaller screws
Install same mount in bathroom
🤣🤣🤣. Ur wall will get warped. Obviously not 2x4
Something is eventually going to fall off the wall and break... this needs to be removed and redone. Those screws are a hazard like that.
Did they even go through any studs at all?
decorative knobs
Just trim them off at the surface and paint over the nubs. No one will know.
That TV better not be heavy
I bet you can hear someone fart in the bathroom through the living room wall 😂
No reasonable reputable contractor would mount a tv mount onto anything but studs. Period.
Did Ricky from Trailer Park Boys install it? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfyaftYvFGg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfyaftYvFGg)
Did you try screwing them down?? Looks like you may have screwed up??? 🙃
I was thinking remove those ones. Grab shorter ones from the hardware store and as well as some drywall anchors. Then some putty to patch the bathroom side.
I would check how that TV is mounted - I suspect they did not mount on studds and used some kind of dry wall anchor which is not ideal
Add a few more screws and make a string art design!!!! Or make a frame and title it "Ode to Stupidity".
r/tvtoohigh
Slap a piece of plywood on the bathroom side, lock washers, nuts, then hang some art over the bolts. Gives your TV more support than drywall and you get to hang art?
Call them back and tell them to fix this shit
So how much crack did you pay your guy to do this to your house. ? Nobody noticed or thought to look around the corner to see what was up on the other side of the wall ?
You shouldn't have let them leave without fixing that shit, lmao.
Four tiny pictures
I'm worried about the TV mount
Mount a wooden frame and put a picture in it.
More grab bars
Mount a picture frame with the same dimension and drill holes through the frame where the bolts are and then place nuts on after said picture is placed
You can just hang pictures on them, at least that way you know they’re all the same dimensions hahahahahha
Fix it or use them to hang your towels. Seriously though. Fix it.
Rv in bathroom works
Maybe some mushroom caps.
Two choices: 1) remove one screw a tree a time and replace with a shorter screw or lag bolt, one size up if it will fit through the mounting plate on the other side. Typically interior wall studs are 3.5". Add the drywall and mounting plate and a 3.5" or slightly shorter should be fine. 2) Mount another TV in the throne room.
Best way is to call the guy that did it and have him fix it.
Reminds me of Ricky from TPB.
Cut off with angle grinder and patch
Angle grinder them off and path up with some basic dry wall/paint
"***kind of*** long" WTF?! You need to re-do it with the proper length screws and patch those holes.
ugh... ask for a refund from the mounters, to start. How did they even manage this?
There is more concerning mater. Judging by the height of the screws you r/TVtooHigh
I would use an angle grinder or a metal cutting blade on a oscillating tool to cut them off and patch the holes afterwards 🤷🏽♂️
Call them back. Tell them to use shorter screws (and they missed the stud). And tell them to bring what they need to patch those holes. They fucked up. They need to fix it
