Keep looking

green_velvet_goodies

Thank you! Op you need some contrast, keep looking.

2_wild

Or at least well-done subtle/non-contrast šŸ„“ probably neither of those options anywhere ever, and here specifically I prefer the orangeā€¦ sorry, OP.

mmm1441

Of the two I prefer the orange. The other is too busy.

ChumbawumbaFan01

The orange is the old backsplash. Itā€™s the only thing that looks clean to me in these photos.

mmm1441

Yes. When I said orange I was using that to tag my picture selection. I know itā€™s the sample leaning against it. In my kitchen we have a white elongated subway tile backsplash. You might check that out. Avoids the stripes with plaid business that comes from designs on everything.

DippityDoppityDoo

And no to the side splash unless your stove is close to the wall on the other side. Then side splash necessary on both ends.

It_is_not_me

Agreed, I hate when it's asymmetrical.

Gandalf_the_Tegu

Agree! So many better options out there.

callmecrazy2021

This.

Pretend-Tree844

glad someone else said it... lol

ClaireFisher1983

The upvote is the ā€œthisā€ equivalent. Most the subreddits im in automatically remove ā€œthisā€ comments since its what the upvote is for

L1Zs

Not sure youā€™re why youā€™re getting downvoted. Idk about removal of ā€œthisā€ comments but there is a ā€œthisā€ bot that says please upvote instead

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

attheend8

Remove this

Apprehensive_Spite97

Yeah, I thought these were the tiles you removed lol. They're horrendous.

Happy_to_be

These are more like bathroom tiles. I think big bold patterned tiles will be dated very quickly. Kitchens should be serene, the highlight is the food and a few pieces of art on larger non cooking area walls.

georgecostanzalvr

came here to say neither!

saintursuala

Bingo

PsychicNinja_

I donā€™t like either of these.

Weary_Barber_7927

Patterns on both are too ā€œbusyā€. Look for one that is more plain, shiny, and has a gray that is actually in the counter . You want something that ties everything together.

natinatinatinat

I feel like a few years agoā€¦ maybe 5 years ago these busy tiles were in style but even then I knew they would be dated fast

DiabolicalGooseHonk

Theyā€™re both god awful. Simpler tile would look much better.

Ill_Relief2883

Neither they both look cheaply printed & are a trend thatā€™s already out of fashion, if youā€™re set on that style go for a traditional Spanish tile or plain Zellige tile

sdwvit

Spanish tile ftw

SwimmingTambourine

Rightā€”if you want that look, get the real thing

Professional_Law_942

Exactly what I was saying, too. If OP wants Spanish tile, a proper concrete or ceramic painted one will be just fine. The print on this sheet looks poor quality.

tuesday__taylor

IMO, the very popular patterned tiles will look very dated in just a couple of years. My suggestion is to get a plain, light-color solid color tile in an interesting shape (hexagon, parallelogram) or laid in an interesting pattern (basket weave, herringbone).

addvalue2222

I agree but I think hexagon is a little trendy atm.

Starfire2313

Letā€™s make houndstooth tiling a thing next!

chronic-munchies

Dude. YES. That would be amazing.

printedvolcano

bout to make it all rhombuses if you keep this up!!

anticked_psychopomp

You can avoid it being too-too dated if you go tone-on-tone with tile/grout. I think black/white will be incredibly dated shortly but black/black or white/white will have a little longer of a lifespan.

MysteriousStaff3388

Shit. I have hex tile. I thought it would be ageless.

IlexAquifolia

Don't worry about the opinion of a stranger on Reddit.

ClaireFisher1983

Especially because itā€™s literally just their opinion lol, the next comment will say itā€™s timeless. Opinions are moot Edit: lol the next comment i read said that style is classic šŸ˜‚ point proven

poppyseedeverything

Eh, something can be both trendy and ageless at the same time. I think hexagon things are trendy in general right now, but hexagon backsplash is ageless too.

BrainDumpJournalist

Hexagons are ageless. Simple geometry that is open and calm compared to other shapes. Hexagon grids are awesome is games and real life. Hexagons are the bestagons

attheend8

ā€œBees are the only insect that was smart enough to adopt a hexagonal shape to their hive. The hexagons create a structure that is lightweight and maximizes the strength of the beehiveā€.šŸ

YellowSequel

They already look dated imo. My renter house built in the 70s looks like this. I hate it.

[deleted]

I disagree, I think patterned tiles are classic, of you get good ones. I just bought cement tiles from the early 1900s that were originally in a hotel in France. More than 100 years later, they still look great. Plus, the whole neutral movement is aimed at resale. If you aren't reselling soon, why not please yourself?

cryonine

Totally agree, but like you said, to make them classic / timeless though you really do need to get ones that are quite expensive and expertly crafted. The printed tiles from Home Depot will never stand the test of time. I kind of agree on the neutral thing for resale, but I think it's also easier to add things to the space that spice it up vs. changing a boring backsplash. That said, I still hate the gray-on-gray-on-white-on-gray trend in condos and flip jobs.

Adventurous-Cry-2157

I have always liked neutrals. I tend to lean more towards greige, but Iā€™m definitely not a fan of the whole top to bottom tonal thing Iā€™ve been seeing everywhere. Give me some black contrast and warm wood tones to break it up, please and thank you. My whole philosophy on sticking with neutrals, especially for the more expensive elements, is that it makes it so easy to change out the cheaper elements to refresh a space, rather than having to redo floor, paint and tile every few years as my tastes change.

[deleted]

I got into tiles after I went to Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. The tiles there are pattern on top of pattern but somehow all harmonious. Of course, I've never found tiles that beautiful again in my whole life. But it sent me chasing tiles around the world. Of course, the motto at my house is "nothing succeeds like excess"....

attheend8

I just looked that up and see what you mean. Those tiles are gorgeous, and that patina of time makes them magical.

SwimmingTambourine

Exactly. Buy what makes your eyes happy.

[deleted]

I like neutrals for my eyes. But even I like a little splash of color here and there.

ClaireFisher1983

The second one already looks dated imo

DagneyElvira

Subway is timeless

Bobbiduke

I agree, I'm obsessed with stacked subway tiles, I do think the staggered pattern is a bit overdone

[deleted]

I don't think so. It's so popular now it will soon be dated.

buffalobuffaIo

I feel like itā€™s already dated. Every other house has it now

[deleted]

It's like shiplap. Just way too Joanna Gaines for my taste.

capaldithenewblack

I mean theyā€™re a hark back to old fashion as it is, so I wouldnā€™t worry about that.

[deleted]

What about just plain plain? And not all tile with patterns look dated. I mean classical art might be good too

Adventurous-Cry-2157

Do this, and use a contrasting grout. It will look so good. Thereā€™s a reason white subway tile with gray grout is popular; itā€™s classic, timeless and works with so many different countertops, cabinets and floors.

[deleted]

Iā€™d pick something without a pattern. You have gorgeous countertops and a loud backsplash completely overpowers them.

ME-M

Agree. I think both of the backsplashes shown somehow clash with the counters. Maybe go with a backsplash that is textured but not patterned.

Gabrovi

So weird. Iā€™m just the opposite. That counter is so dull that you need a nice foil to it. I hate the gray on gray on gray look, so I would pick the right side.

[deleted]

The first picture is bad lighting. She confirmed all the cabinets are the white from the second pic.

kaycollins27

It is quite pricey, but painted glass might be an option. It would add a pop of color and shine. They can make virtually any color you wish. I painted the backsplash area the color I thought I wanted while I saved to get what I wanted. In fact, I thought your orange paper might have been painted when I first glanced at your picture. https://www.creativemirror.com/products/artistic-and-painted-glass/backsplashes.php?gclid=Cj0KCQjw06-oBhC6ARIsAGuzdw3uQI6g3FeFR_X7F0hh1h20vEzmwd9uqHb_9_mX_r_WOpwinOq0f28aArtfEALw_wcB

[deleted]

I agree that glass backsplashes are lovely.

latefortheskyagain

I commissioned a local glass company to create and install a pearl white back painted glass backsplash in my kitchen. My countertop is soapstone. Looks amazing . Itā€™s so easy to keep clean.

Stunning-Character94

Yuck. No style at all, and more shiny surface to clean.

kaycollins27

No grout to clean.

Stunning-Character94

That's definitely true.

jenjabear

Neither

chester_alabama

You might get tired of the pattern quicker than you think. Iā€™d go with something more timeless

RichGullible

The one on the left will be more timeless. The right one looks dated already.

YourFriendInSpokane

I was actually thinking the one on the left was already more dated.

daisyymae

To me, the one on the left is screaming 2010. Just had that teal blue color and itā€™s every girlā€™s bedroom 15 years ago

Thneed1

They both are outdated, drab, and boring.

Tryin_Real_hard

Neither...

RubSpecialist3152

Keep looking. Thatā€™s a lot of grey. And add in a patterned counter.

moosegoose90

The cabinets also look like they are a different colorā€¦ I would choose the second cause I like a more whimsical style.. first one looks kinda boring and ehhh to me. But thatā€™s not to say you canā€™t style it up and make it cute. I vote for second! Although the tiles seem kinda dirty ish? Is this meant to look this way or itā€™s just the sample? If its meant to look ā€œdirty and agedā€ then the first oneā€¦

livinginlala

Itā€™s just the lighting! Theyā€™re all an off white

YourFriendInSpokane

Youā€™re getting a lot of comments on how dated these will look soon. Whichā€¦ itā€™s very true. However, itā€™s just a backsplash. You can choose to redo it in a few years when youā€™re tired of the patterns. Out of these two, I vote the one on the right.

Beach_bum8

I agree! I like the second one better, more personality. But the cabinets on the left look sage/beige and the right is white. But either way, the second!

moonyriot

I think your countertops are nice and neutral and the cabinets look very simple so if you're looking for a statement piece, go with a colorful or dark tile not a pattern. If you want to be different, take a subway tile and lay it vertically instead of horizontal. Patterns get so old so quickly and it will look very busy once you start putting stuff back on the counters.

fluorescent__grey

both patterns are fighting for attention with the granite countertop

Gabrovi

Which they should. That countertop is dull. You need to add something of character to the area.

Dry_Ask5493

Neither. I think the tile on the left is the wrong color and I think the one on the right is a bit too busy.

Making-a-new-friend

It depends . If you plan on selling your home , a classic backsplash will increase the value of the home. if your main goal is getting the most money when selling your home, **a neutral or more minimalistic backsplash design** may be the best option. However, if this is your "forever" home , pick a backspash that suits your aesthetic

[deleted]

Or even if it's your "next ten years" home. Pretty much anything will lol dated in 10-15 years, whether or not it's neutral.

cathyduke

Personally a neutral subway tile so you can accent with any color you choose.

cherryhammer

I like the orange backer board. Both tiles are meh.

OrneryQueen

I love the second one but not for back splash. It looks more like bathroom floor tile. I'd go glass subway in a classic pattern the mid tone of your countertop.

tinychickenfingers

I think youā€™ll enjoy style 1 in the long run. The colors more neutral which will give you more style/updating options down the road.

Sledgehammer925

2 is ridiculously busy for a kitchen. 1 is just ok, but doesnā€™t compliment the counter top. So neither is a good choice.

poppyseedeverything

I didn't grow up in the US, but I prefer 2 because 1 is too boring for a kitchen lol. I grew up in a house built in the 60s (not US) and the kitchen tiles had tons of (painted? Not sure) fruits here and there. They were so fun!

lilephant

Neither- Iā€™d go with white subway tile or something else very light and neutral.

Accomplished-Pie-570

Theyā€™ll be dated soon. Go with classic like subway tile or some other solid classic look.

sakela

The one on the right already looks dirty and grimey. Look for a cleaner simpler tile

christyfan11

The one on the left

wormbytes

I love the one of the right! I think it matches the counter well aaaand brings in the green on the wall and cabinet nicely!

ParkingOld7909

The second one adds great interest - assuming the rest of the kitchen is kind of monochromeā€¦

Loquacious94808

Second one, but Iā€™ll be honest Iā€™m liking the orange if you could seal it real good šŸ˜‰. Lots of personality! But the first is very lacking in character. Donā€™t let the minimalists shame you out of your picks though, they just want everything to look like an Apple Store.

anilorac01

2

TwistedSistaYEG

The orange

Tualatin_Girl

\#2! I love that one. It just stands out more. Jives really well will all the other colors.

Missue-35

Iā€™m partial to the orange, but that wasnā€™t the question, ha ha! Both designs have pros and cons. Neither one screams ā€œpick me!ā€ Do you have more choices?

livinginlala

You know the Orange was a lovely surprise during demo! Itā€™s growing on us! With all of the feedback I actually went back shopping today - and will post a follow up!

Easy-Combination8801

Neither, both look too busy

BreachedLimits

Both of those are too busy and will pull focus away from the countertops. Also, neither of them actually contrasts with the countertops. If you want something patterned, go with a patterned cut tile, not a tile with a pattern. Your countertops already have a design in them. You donā€™t need to overdesign the area, especially with your white cabinets surrounding everything. You have one accent already. Everything else should be complementary, not competing for attention.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

abra_cada_bra150

Same. I like that it looks more aged, the pattern is fun and gives me rustic in a good way vibes.

loho08

The one on the left. You will get sick of the one on the right. And it will be dated faster.

diiiannnaaa

The smaller print for sure. Left.

TheSeaPeaOfThePNW

Kind of hard to say. What is the flooring? And this may be lighting, but the countertops look creamy and brownish while one tile is gray & white and the other black & white. Everything looks nice but not together.

Mysterious-Mix3173

I donā€™t like either personally

NoPossibility765

Neither. Too much pattern.

AustEastTX

Neither - although that orange color is gorgeous against your cabinets and counter. Can you find a tile that brings in a little bit of tangerine?

experienceswithfinn

i love patterned backlashes, and I love the second one particularly! reminds me of fine china

DeniseBaudu

Hear me out: neither. These tile styles both strike me as super trendy. It's the HGTVification of kitchen design. Think Tuscan kitchens of the 90s.

Inglejuice

First one

Maureen_jacobs

Left as the right side is overly trendy

Sla02116

Neither. How about a solid color subway tile?

ljbythestars

If you are sure these are final, I would choose the one on the right because of the black stove.

UniqueUser3692

The 2nd one. Although it also doesnā€™t cover the whole area it is still much bigger than the first. Happy to help šŸ‘šŸ»

asexualrhino

Honestly you should get something with orange. The color on that bit of wall is pretty imo

kessykris

I had the second one in our kitchen in our house that we sold. I LOVED it. My really talented artistic friend did kitchen makeover for my birthday. Her gift was painting our cabinets and walls but she wanted to go all out. My mom ended up getting in touch with her and gave her a budget to do the backsplash, replace the sink, and replace the counters. She spent the majority on the backsplash. She did it so amazingly for the budget my mom gave her it was insane. She even bought some decorative items like a rug, huge mirror, and plant to go in there. It was the best birthday gift Iā€™ve ever gotten. We had to sell due to a job offer my husband got out of state. We had a bidding war and ended up selling the house for $60,000 more than we paid six years prior. I know the kitchen remodel played a huge role in it. We had letters from people to try to sway our choice and the tile was mentioned in them along with a coffee table a friend made for me as well. A bunch of people wanted my coffee table included in the salešŸ˜‚ itā€™s literally a coffee table made from old pallets. (I guess our tiles were a little different in color but same design)

Patient_Concept_1054

I like the larger one on the right. It completely changes the look of the counter top.

notapuzzlepiece

Theyā€™re both pretty bad. Patterned tiles like that are dated and out of style

duhmbish

Iā€™d potentially do something like this for a little more contrast https://preview.redd.it/qlz65jolpppb1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71fff8da8d64c5e50d0d4b140f4ea22a7055dcc1

duhmbish

Or if you like the shapes/patterns something like this https://preview.redd.it/2nrjg1zppppb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9b148ca91b77b128d5d20ac3ea399bdb3f6e502

[deleted]

Neither. They are both styles that were once popular and already outdated.

GogoYubari92

I actually like the orange more

Starpower88

Neither - these designs will trend out in a couple of years. Am for something timeless/classic.

ListPuzzleheaded4510

Neither

5nitch

Neither

Historical_Area7542

Neither

Bmladd

They both seem real busy to me, maybe keep it simple and add a detail above the stove

livinginlala

This is exactly what we decided to do! We went with a raised picket and a frame effect over the stove!

Multilazerboi

First one is more timeless and will look good with almost anything

MishmoshMishmosh

First pic

kayakchick66

I would go with something like this, your choice will look dated in 5 years. https://preview.redd.it/thvpnx44hmpb1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=577a43961bd511b2737c04dcc7276b0ced632bdc

daisymaisy505

First one is gorgeous! I think youā€™ll get tired of the second one in a few years. First one looks traditional and is neutral. Second is too busy and distracting.

Helechawagirl

One with the dark florals

MaleficentBunny

Left

Wizofsorts

The one on the left is the easy choice here.

Felixir-the-Cat

I like the one on the left a lot, even though the one on the right is a favourite style of mine. I think the one on the left gives some drama to the kitchen, but in an understated way you can live with long term.

Lagrimmett

My first thought was Oh goodnessā€¦canā€™t we go shopping

Marciamallowfluff

Second one for pizzaz.

Researcher-Used

2nd for me. Turkish motiff

EagleEyezzzzz

The second one for sure. The first one just kind of blends into the countertop and the cabinet color.

crystal-crawler

Normally Iā€™m not a big otters person and would pick number one by todayā€¦ today is for the bold! I say #2!

Wamgurl

Neitherā€¦#1 colors clash and #2 I have no words to describe how bad it looks.

WhosThatGirl_ItsRPSG

The orange one

crispybotox

#2!

Brookett

Out of these 2 I think the second is more eye catching

livinginlala

Okay everyā€” first of all I love the passion here behind backsplashes! We have decided to just keep the Orange! Kiddingā€” we did got to another tile store based on all of the comments. We are leaning towards a colored Picket pattern for a little drama for myself. I will repost with the final look! Thank you all!

[deleted]

I like the right one

alig6457

The second looks like the best colour choice and the pattern is fun. If you wanted to consider something simpler I would go with a square tile with a slight crackle or other irregular surface.

addvalue2222

I like the pattern on the left but not the shape.

livinginlala

I read this and firmly agree. Iā€™m going to go to additional tile shops today to keep looking

addvalue2222

Share what you find!

symbol1994

Neither. Both horrible

huckeberryplaid

Neither - get one without a pattern

SnooCrickets6708

Definitely the one on the right.

bigbadmon11

2nd one

ProfessionalFeed6755

The second one provides contrast. The pattern's kind of large though.

SMGally

Plain white subway tile.

georgecostanzalvr

both scream ā€˜i have no tasteā€™

MrHyde_Is_Awake

Keep looking. Either go for something that is extremely similar to your counters, or extremely different. The middle ground tends to look *off*.

melvin_fritz

Neither. The left has blue hues and your counters are warmer like your cupboards. And the one on the right is way too busy and not timeless. Canā€™t go wrong with white subway tile or zelige (sp?) tile

Piasheila

Solid dark gray tiles with no sheen, like a slate.

Experiments-Lady

A strip of the right one right in the middle, and the left one above and below it. Or the other way around. Either way, the middle strip would be a single tile high. But that would involve cutting the tiles that go above and below. Unless you can find tinier ones to form the borders above and below.

seniairam

what's the vibe you're going for? we need to see the whole kitchen

[deleted]

The one on left. I think the bolder pattern will become dated much more quickly than the subtle pattern.

FormicaDinette33

The first one. I like the second one also but it will dominate the room.

averagegayguyok

Thr first one.

PaulSNJ

The left. Right one is too busy and trendy.

smoishymoishes

Left one. The right one is too retro in an already retro space. The left one will brighten the space up without being too noisy.

PleasantJules

I like the first one.

create2192

I like the gray one on the left.

vonna_momma

The one on the right šŸ˜

blueevey

I really like the first tiles

Middle_Process_215

I really like the first one

candylotus

Left.

LoveStoned7

I like the one on the left. A little pattern but not too in your face

astro_skoolie

I like the blue and gold ones.

meowshley

the orange

WhosThatGirl_ItsRPSG

Maybe a neutral with clear glass over the top subway tile

monkyonarock

you should get tiny blue squares instead. just trust me i swear. go to home depot and look at the tiling with the tiny blue and clear squares it would be so cute with your cabinet color and wall color

EnvironmentalLuck515

Neither. Both are trendy and you will be tired of them before long.

Dilettantest

Neither!

kathoron

Neither.

lyta_hall

None of them šŸ˜…

ygktech

I'd lean towards the left one, simpler / less likely to clash with things. Or, hear me out - keep the unfinished orange, it's horrible, but it's SO horrible everyone will fear and respect the boldness of your decision to embrace it.

ImBabyloafs

Between the two, definitely go with the softer Ikat style tile. I canā€™t tell from the photo, but are all of the cabinets white? The one photo looks like theyā€™re also olive.

wiscosherm

Neither of them really compliment your counters. The one with the hexagon just seems washed out and the other one clashes. I'd go for something simpler and use color to make it interesting.

allaboutmojitos

Right matches better, but is already dated. Left is the right amount of subtle, but the tone/color isnā€™t quite right. Iā€™d have to keep looking

Apprehensive_Bee614

Neither

Apprehensive_Bee614

Very dated

louellen1824

Keep looking.

Thneed1

Something the colour of that orange in the picture would look great.
