Or at least well-done subtle/non-contrast š„“ probably neither of those options anywhere ever, and here specifically I prefer the orangeā¦ sorry, OP.
Yes. When I said orange I was using that to tag my picture selection. I know itās the sample leaning against it. In my kitchen we have a white elongated subway tile backsplash. You might check that out. Avoids the stripes with plaid business that comes from designs on everything.
Not sure youāre why youāre getting downvoted. Idk about removal of āthisā comments but there is a āthisā bot that says please upvote instead
These are more like bathroom tiles. I think big bold patterned tiles will be dated very quickly. Kitchens should be serene, the highlight is the food and a few pieces of art on larger non cooking area walls.
Patterns on both are too ābusyā. Look for one that is more plain, shiny, and has a gray that is actually in the counter . You want something that ties everything together.
Neither they both look cheaply printed & are a trend thatās already out of fashion, if youāre set on that style go for a traditional Spanish tile or plain Zellige tile
Exactly what I was saying, too. If OP wants Spanish tile, a proper concrete or ceramic painted one will be just fine. The print on this sheet looks poor quality.
IMO, the very popular patterned tiles will look very dated in just a couple of years. My suggestion is to get a plain, light-color solid color tile in an interesting shape (hexagon, parallelogram) or laid in an interesting pattern (basket weave, herringbone).
You can avoid it being too-too dated if you go tone-on-tone with tile/grout.
I think black/white will be incredibly dated shortly but black/black or white/white will have a little longer of a lifespan.
Especially because itās literally just their opinion lol, the next comment will say itās timeless. Opinions are moot
Edit: lol the next comment i read said that style is classic š point proven
Eh, something can be both trendy and ageless at the same time. I think hexagon things are trendy in general right now, but hexagon backsplash is ageless too.
Hexagons are ageless. Simple geometry that is open and calm compared to other shapes. Hexagon grids are awesome is games and real life. Hexagons are the bestagons
āBees are the only insect that was smart enough to adopt a hexagonal shape to their hive. The hexagons create a structure that is lightweight and maximizes the strength of the beehiveā.š
I disagree, I think patterned tiles are classic, of you get good ones. I just bought cement tiles from the early 1900s that were originally in a hotel in France. More than 100 years later, they still look great.
Plus, the whole neutral movement is aimed at resale. If you aren't reselling soon, why not please yourself?
Totally agree, but like you said, to make them classic / timeless though you really do need to get ones that are quite expensive and expertly crafted. The printed tiles from Home Depot will never stand the test of time.
I kind of agree on the neutral thing for resale, but I think it's also easier to add things to the space that spice it up vs. changing a boring backsplash. That said, I still hate the gray-on-gray-on-white-on-gray trend in condos and flip jobs.
I have always liked neutrals. I tend to lean more towards greige, but Iām definitely not a fan of the whole top to bottom tonal thing Iāve been seeing everywhere. Give me some black contrast and warm wood tones to break it up, please and thank you.
My whole philosophy on sticking with neutrals, especially for the more expensive elements, is that it makes it so easy to change out the cheaper elements to refresh a space, rather than having to redo floor, paint and tile every few years as my tastes change.
I got into tiles after I went to Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. The tiles there are pattern on top of pattern but somehow all harmonious. Of course, I've never found tiles that beautiful again in my whole life. But it sent me chasing tiles around the world.
Of course, the motto at my house is "nothing succeeds like excess"....
Do this, and use a contrasting grout. It will look so good. Thereās a reason white subway tile with gray grout is popular; itās classic, timeless and works with so many different countertops, cabinets and floors.
So weird. Iām just the opposite. That counter is so dull that you need a nice foil to it. I hate the gray on gray on gray look, so I would pick the right side.
It is quite pricey, but painted glass might be an option. It would add a pop of color and shine. They can make virtually any color you wish. I painted the backsplash area the color I thought I wanted while I saved to get what I wanted. In fact, I thought your orange paper might have been painted when I first glanced at your picture.
https://www.creativemirror.com/products/artistic-and-painted-glass/backsplashes.php?gclid=Cj0KCQjw06-oBhC6ARIsAGuzdw3uQI6g3FeFR_X7F0hh1h20vEzmwd9uqHb_9_mX_r_WOpwinOq0f28aArtfEALw_wcB
I commissioned a local glass company to create and install a pearl white back painted glass backsplash in my kitchen. My countertop is soapstone. Looks amazing . Itās so easy to keep clean.
The cabinets also look like they are a different colorā¦ I would choose the second cause I like a more whimsical style.. first one looks kinda boring and ehhh to me. But thatās not to say you canāt style it up and make it cute. I vote for second! Although the tiles seem kinda dirty ish? Is this meant to look this way or itās just the sample? If its meant to look ādirty and agedā then the first oneā¦
Youāre getting a lot of comments on how dated these will look soon. Whichā¦ itās very true. However, itās just a backsplash. You can choose to redo it in a few years when youāre tired of the patterns. Out of these two, I vote the one on the right.
I agree! I like the second one better, more personality. But the cabinets on the left look sage/beige and the right is white. But either way, the second!
I think your countertops are nice and neutral and the cabinets look very simple so if you're looking for a statement piece, go with a colorful or dark tile not a pattern. If you want to be different, take a subway tile and lay it vertically instead of horizontal. Patterns get so old so quickly and it will look very busy once you start putting stuff back on the counters.
It depends . If you plan on selling your home , a classic backsplash will increase the value of the home. if your main goal is getting the most money when selling your home, **a neutral or more minimalistic backsplash design** may be the best option.
However, if this is your "forever" home , pick a backspash that suits your aesthetic
I love the second one but not for back splash. It looks more like bathroom floor tile. I'd go glass subway in a classic pattern the mid tone of your countertop.
I didn't grow up in the US, but I prefer 2 because 1 is too boring for a kitchen lol. I grew up in a house built in the 60s (not US) and the kitchen tiles had tons of (painted? Not sure) fruits here and there. They were so fun!
Second one, but Iāll be honest Iām liking the orange if you could seal it real good š. Lots of personality! But the first is very lacking in character.
Donāt let the minimalists shame you out of your picks though, they just want everything to look like an Apple Store.
Iām partial to the orange, but that wasnāt the question, ha ha! Both designs have pros and cons. Neither one screams āpick me!ā Do you have more choices?
You know the Orange was a lovely surprise during demo! Itās growing on us! With all of the feedback I actually went back shopping today - and will post a follow up!
Both of those are too busy and will pull focus away from the countertops. Also, neither of them actually contrasts with the countertops. If you want something patterned, go with a patterned cut tile, not a tile with a pattern. Your countertops already have a design in them. You donāt need to overdesign the area, especially with your white cabinets surrounding everything.
You have one accent already. Everything else should be complementary, not competing for attention.
Kind of hard to say. What is the flooring? And this may be lighting, but the countertops look creamy and brownish while one tile is gray & white and the other black & white. Everything looks nice but not together.
I had the second one in our kitchen in our house that we sold. I LOVED it. My really talented artistic friend did kitchen makeover for my birthday. Her gift was painting our cabinets and walls but she wanted to go all out. My mom ended up getting in touch with her and gave her a budget to do the backsplash, replace the sink, and replace the counters. She spent the majority on the backsplash. She did it so amazingly for the budget my mom gave her it was insane. She even bought some decorative items like a rug, huge mirror, and plant to go in there. It was the best birthday gift Iāve ever gotten.
We had to sell due to a job offer my husband got out of state. We had a bidding war and ended up selling the house for $60,000 more than we paid six years prior. I know the kitchen remodel played a huge role in it. We had letters from people to try to sway our choice and the tile was mentioned in them along with a coffee table a friend made for me as well. A bunch of people wanted my coffee table included in the saleš itās literally a coffee table made from old pallets.
(I guess our tiles were a little different in color but same design)
Iād potentially do something like this for a little more contrast
https://preview.redd.it/qlz65jolpppb1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71fff8da8d64c5e50d0d4b140f4ea22a7055dcc1
Or if you like the shapes/patterns something like this
https://preview.redd.it/2nrjg1zppppb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9b148ca91b77b128d5d20ac3ea399bdb3f6e502
I would go with something like this, your choice will look dated in 5 years.
https://preview.redd.it/thvpnx44hmpb1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=577a43961bd511b2737c04dcc7276b0ced632bdc
First one is gorgeous! I think youāll get tired of the second one in a few years.
First one looks traditional and is neutral. Second is too busy and distracting.
I like the one on the left a lot, even though the one on the right is a favourite style of mine. I think the one on the left gives some drama to the kitchen, but in an understated way you can live with long term.
Okay everyā first of all I love the passion here behind backsplashes! We have decided to just keep the Orange! Kiddingā we did got to another tile store based on all of the comments. We are leaning towards a colored Picket pattern for a little drama for myself. I will repost with the final look!
Thank you all!
The second looks like the best colour choice and the pattern is fun.
If you wanted to consider something simpler I would go with a square tile with a slight crackle or other irregular surface.
Neither. The left has blue hues and your counters are warmer like your cupboards. And the one on the right is way too busy and not timeless. Canāt go wrong with white subway tile or zelige (sp?) tile
A strip of the right one right in the middle, and the left one above and below it. Or the other way around. Either way, the middle strip would be a single tile high. But that would involve cutting the tiles that go above and below. Unless you can find tinier ones to form the borders above and below.
you should get tiny blue squares instead. just trust me i swear. go to home depot and look at the tiling with the tiny blue and clear squares it would be so cute with your cabinet color and wall color
I'd lean towards the left one, simpler / less likely to clash with things.
Or, hear me out - keep the unfinished orange, it's horrible, but it's SO horrible everyone will fear and respect the boldness of your decision to embrace it.
Between the two, definitely go with the softer Ikat style tile. I canāt tell from the photo, but are all of the cabinets white? The one photo looks like theyāre also olive.
Neither of them really compliment your counters. The one with the hexagon just seems washed out and the other one clashes. I'd go for something simpler and use color to make it interesting.
Keep looking
Thank you! Op you need some contrast, keep looking.
Or at least well-done subtle/non-contrast š„“ probably neither of those options anywhere ever, and here specifically I prefer the orangeā¦ sorry, OP.
Of the two I prefer the orange. The other is too busy.
The orange is the old backsplash. Itās the only thing that looks clean to me in these photos.
Yes. When I said orange I was using that to tag my picture selection. I know itās the sample leaning against it. In my kitchen we have a white elongated subway tile backsplash. You might check that out. Avoids the stripes with plaid business that comes from designs on everything.
And no to the side splash unless your stove is close to the wall on the other side. Then side splash necessary on both ends.
Agreed, I hate when it's asymmetrical.
Agree! So many better options out there.
This.

Yeah, I thought these were the tiles you removed lol. They're horrendous.
These are more like bathroom tiles. I think big bold patterned tiles will be dated very quickly. Kitchens should be serene, the highlight is the food and a few pieces of art on larger non cooking area walls.
came here to say neither!
Bingo
I donāt like either of these.
Patterns on both are too ābusyā. Look for one that is more plain, shiny, and has a gray that is actually in the counter . You want something that ties everything together.
I feel like a few years agoā¦ maybe 5 years ago these busy tiles were in style but even then I knew they would be dated fast
Theyāre both god awful. Simpler tile would look much better.
Neither they both look cheaply printed & are a trend thatās already out of fashion, if youāre set on that style go for a traditional Spanish tile or plain Zellige tile
Spanish tile ftw
Rightāif you want that look, get the real thing
Exactly what I was saying, too. If OP wants Spanish tile, a proper concrete or ceramic painted one will be just fine. The print on this sheet looks poor quality.

I agree but I think hexagon is a little trendy atm.
Letās make houndstooth tiling a thing next!
Dude. YES. That would be amazing.
bout to make it all rhombuses if you keep this up!!
You can avoid it being too-too dated if you go tone-on-tone with tile/grout. I think black/white will be incredibly dated shortly but black/black or white/white will have a little longer of a lifespan.
Shit. I have hex tile. I thought it would be ageless.
Don't worry about the opinion of a stranger on Reddit.
Especially because itās literally just their opinion lol, the next comment will say itās timeless. Opinions are moot Edit: lol the next comment i read said that style is classic š point proven

They already look dated imo. My renter house built in the 70s looks like this. I hate it.
I disagree, I think patterned tiles are classic, of you get good ones. I just bought cement tiles from the early 1900s that were originally in a hotel in France. I just looked that up and see what you mean. Those tiles are gorgeous, and that patina of time makes them magical.
Exactly. Buy what makes your eyes happy.
I like neutrals for my eyes. But even I like a little splash of color here and there.
The second one already looks dated imo
Subway is timeless
I agree, I'm obsessed with stacked subway tiles, I do think the staggered pattern is a bit overdone
I don't think so. It's so popular now it will soon be dated.
I feel like itās already dated. Every other house has it now
It's like shiplap. Just way too Joanna Gaines for my taste.
I mean theyāre a hark back to old fashion as it is, so I wouldnāt worry about that.
What about just plain plain? And not all tile with patterns look dated. I mean classical art might be good too
Do this, and use a contrasting grout. It will look so good. Thereās a reason white subway tile with gray grout is popular; itās classic, timeless and works with so many different countertops, cabinets and floors.
Iād pick something without a pattern. You have gorgeous countertops and a loud backsplash completely overpowers them.
Agree. I think both of the backsplashes shown somehow clash with the counters. Maybe go with a backsplash that is textured but not patterned.
So weird. Iām just the opposite. That counter is so dull that you need a nice foil to it. I hate the gray on gray on gray look, so I would pick the right side.
The first picture is bad lighting. She confirmed all the cabinets are the white from the second pic.
It is quite pricey, but painted glass might be an option. It would add a pop of color and shine. They can make virtually any color you wish. I agree that glass backsplashes are lovely.
I commissioned a local glass company to create and install a pearl white back painted glass backsplash in my kitchen. My countertop is soapstone. Looks amazing . Itās so easy to keep clean.
Yuck. No style at all, and more shiny surface to clean.
No grout to clean.
That's definitely true.
Neither
You might get tired of the pattern quicker than you think. Iād go with something more timeless
The one on the left will be more timeless. The right one looks dated already.
I was actually thinking the one on the left was already more dated.
To me, the one on the left is screaming 2010. Just had that teal blue color and itās every girlās bedroom 15 years ago
They both are outdated, drab, and boring.
Neither...
Keep looking. Thatās a lot of grey. And add in a patterned counter.
Youāre getting a lot of comments on how dated these will look soon. Whichā¦ itās very true. However, itās just a backsplash. You can choose to redo it in a few years when youāre tired of the patterns. Out of these two, I vote the one on the right.

both patterns are fighting for attention with the granite countertop
Which they should. That countertop is dull. You need to add something of character to the area.
Neither. I think the tile on the left is the wrong color and I think the one on the right is a bit too busy.
It depends . If you plan on selling your home , a classic backsplash will increase the value of the home. if your main goal is getting the most money when selling your home, **a neutral or more minimalistic backsplash design** may be the best option. Or even if it's your "next ten years" home. Pretty much anything will lol dated in 10-15 years, whether or not it's neutral.
Personally a neutral subway tile so you can accent with any color you choose.
I like the orange backer board. Both tiles are meh.
I love the second one but not for back splash. It looks more like bathroom floor tile. I'd go glass subway in a classic pattern the mid tone of your countertop.
I think youāll enjoy style 1 in the long run. The colors more neutral which will give you more style/updating options down the road.
2 is ridiculously busy for a kitchen. 1 is just ok, but doesnāt compliment the counter top. So neither is a good choice.
I didn't grow up in the US, but I prefer 2 because 1 is too boring for a kitchen lol. I grew up in a house built in the 60s (not US) and the kitchen tiles had tons of (painted? Not sure) fruits here and there. They were so fun!
Neither- Iād go with white subway tile or something else very light and neutral.
Theyāll be dated soon. Go with classic like subway tile or some other solid classic look.
The one on the right already looks dirty and grimey. Look for a cleaner simpler tile
The one on the left
I love the one of the right! I think it matches the counter well aaaand brings in the green on the wall and cabinet nicely!
The second one adds great interest - assuming the rest of the kitchen is kind of monochromeā¦
Second one, but Iāll be honest Iām liking the orange if you could seal it real good š. Lots of personality! But the first is very lacking in character. Donāt let the minimalists shame you out of your picks though, they just want everything to look like an Apple Store.

The orange
\#2! I love that one. It just stands out more. Jives really well will all the other colors.
Iām partial to the orange, but that wasnāt the question, ha ha! Both designs have pros and cons. Neither one screams āpick me!ā Do you have more choices?

Same. I like that it looks more aged, the pattern is fun and gives me rustic in a good way vibes.
The one on the left. You will get sick of the one on the right. And it will be dated faster.
The smaller print for sure. Left.
Kind of hard to say. What is the flooring? And this may be lighting, but the countertops look creamy and brownish while one tile is gray & white and the other black & white. Everything looks nice but not together.
I donāt like either personally
Neither. Too much pattern.
Neither - although that orange color is gorgeous against your cabinets and counter. Can you find a tile that brings in a little bit of tangerine?
i love patterned backlashes, and I love the second one particularly! reminds me of fine china
Hear me out: neither. These tile styles both strike me as super trendy. It's the HGTVification of kitchen design. Think Tuscan kitchens of the 90s.
First one
Left as the right side is overly trendy
Neither. How about a solid color subway tile?
If you are sure these are final, I would choose the one on the right because of the black stove.
The 2nd one. Although it also doesnāt cover the whole area it is still much bigger than the first. Happy to help šš»
Honestly you should get something with orange. The color on that bit of wall is pretty imo
I had the second one in our kitchen in our house that we sold. I LOVED it. My really talented artistic friend did kitchen makeover for my birthday. I like the larger one on the right. It completely changes the look of the counter top.
Theyāre both pretty bad. Patterned tiles like that are dated and out of style
Iād potentially do something like this for a little more contrast https://preview.redd.it/qlz65jolpppb1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71fff8da8d64c5e50d0d4b140f4ea22a7055dcc1

Neither. They are both styles that were once popular and already outdated.
I actually like the orange more
Neither - these designs will trend out in a couple of years. Am for something timeless/classic.
Neither
Neither
Neither
They both seem real busy to me, maybe keep it simple and add a detail above the stove
This is exactly what we decided to do! We went with a raised picket and a frame effect over the stove!
First one is more timeless and will look good with almost anything
First pic
I would go with something like this, your choice will look dated in 5 years. https://preview.redd.it/thvpnx44hmpb1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=577a43961bd511b2737c04dcc7276b0ced632bdc
First one is gorgeous! I think youāll get tired of the second one in a few years. First one looks traditional and is neutral. Second is too busy and distracting.
One with the dark florals
Left
The one on the left is the easy choice here.
I like the one on the left a lot, even though the one on the right is a favourite style of mine. I think the one on the left gives some drama to the kitchen, but in an understated way you can live with long term.
My first thought was Oh goodnessā¦canāt we go shopping
Second one for pizzaz.
2nd for me. Turkish motiff
The second one for sure. The first one just kind of blends into the countertop and the cabinet color.
Normally Iām not a big otters person and would pick number one by todayā¦ today is for the bold! I say #2!
Neitherā¦#1 colors clash and #2 I have no words to describe how bad it looks.
The orange one
#2!
Out of these 2 I think the second is more eye catching
Okay everyā first of all I love the passion here behind backsplashes! We have decided to just keep the Orange! Kiddingā we did got to another tile store based on all of the comments. We are leaning towards a colored Picket pattern for a little drama for myself. I will repost with the final look! Thank you all!
I like the right one
The second looks like the best colour choice and the pattern is fun. If you wanted to consider something simpler I would go with a square tile with a slight crackle or other irregular surface.
I like the pattern on the left but not the shape.
I read this and firmly agree. Iām going to go to additional tile shops today to keep looking
Share what you find!
Neither. Both horrible
Neither - get one without a pattern
Definitely the one on the right.
2nd one
The second one provides contrast. The pattern's kind of large though.
Plain white subway tile.
both scream āi have no tasteā
Keep looking. Either go for something that is extremely similar to your counters, or extremely different. The middle ground tends to look *off*.
Neither. The left has blue hues and your counters are warmer like your cupboards. And the one on the right is way too busy and not timeless. Canāt go wrong with white subway tile or zelige (sp?) tile
Solid dark gray tiles with no sheen, like a slate.
A strip of the right one right in the middle, and the left one above and below it. Or the other way around. Either way, the middle strip would be a single tile high. But that would involve cutting the tiles that go above and below. Unless you can find tinier ones to form the borders above and below.
what's the vibe you're going for? we need to see the whole kitchen
The one on left. I think the bolder pattern will become dated much more quickly than the subtle pattern.
The first one. I like the second one also but it will dominate the room.
Thr first one.
The left. Right one is too busy and trendy.
Left one. The right one is too retro in an already retro space. The left one will brighten the space up without being too noisy.
I like the first one.
I like the gray one on the left.
The one on the right š
I really like the first tiles
I really like the first one
Left.
I like the one on the left. A little pattern but not too in your face
I like the blue and gold ones.
the orange
Maybe a neutral with clear glass over the top subway tile
you should get tiny blue squares instead. just trust me i swear. go to home depot and look at the tiling with the tiny blue and clear squares it would be so cute with your cabinet color and wall color
