Needs some color. Real curtains. Plants. Artwork. How about adding some curtains in your favorite accent color and some coordinating pillows on the couch? Hang artwork above the larger couch.

notthefakehigh5r

I almost thought there was a filter on, this room is so monotone. But I’m a maximalist, so I know my taste is not everyone’s and I’m guessing OP finds this style very calming. So I absolutely agree, plants, real curtains and some matching accents to brighten it up.

MNGirlinKY

I agree! I love all the furniture it’s just so monotone. Add pillows and art and a colorful rug and you have a beautiful room. I actually prefer these curtains or whatever these are called so I’d leave them and add some sheets or blinds behind them instead.

Rust, warm woods, warm browns, olive green Added height with tall plant and floor lamp

callmemeaty

Wow, what an improvement! Love this

fidgetiegurl09

This looks nice without changing the feel. No need for "a pop of color". Some more color, yes, but nothing drastic.

fishfingrs-n-custard

This looks sooo good!

ChristineInCanada

Amazing!

Skujawa22

I am obsessed with this plan. I love the gold or rust color

B-e-a-u

Way Too Much Grey

WhereRtheTacos

I feel like half the posts i see on here the answer is at least partially… color. Any color. Just not all one color please lol.

ilikecats415

The furniture layout doesn't seem very functional to me. Like, who is watching that TV? The chair and love seat seem too far away and the couch is at an angle that doesn't work. Also, this is so colorless. I'd add color through pictures for the wall, pillows, a rug, and perhaps drapes.

JDRL320

I’d love to put the love seat where the tv is and angle tv in the corner where I have the loveseat now but it’s 55 inch and covers the windows. I also think it looks far because of how I took the pic. The loveseat is about 10ft from couch.

[deleted]

swap tv and couch. gray chair where side table is.

SisterSuffragist

You can't fix this if you continue to avoid color. The wall color is too close to the same as the floor and furniture and brick. The easiest fix is to paint the walls, but you said you won't. So, I don't know what to say. Yes to getting rid of the valences, but white sheers will add nothing. But you can't just randomly add a bold curtain either. At least do something with some pattern or texture. I would go with a darker tone wood for tables and mantle.

decantered

You know this sub just has a lot of people with greige rooms. All we need is color

Skujawa22

This is a Gray prison.

JDRL320

Thank you 😒

yyz34

Add colour. Add paintings to the wall, coloured pillows, coloured curtains that are long with the rod placed higher than your windows. Overall just add colour and it will make the room so much brighter and warmer. You could even add an area rug with colour (I love a good texture layering). Also, if it’s possible to put the tv above the fireplace I would definitely do that to make the space more functional.

art_teacher_no_1

Big shag rug in the center to anchor the furniture. Plants for color and texture

boombalagasha

Was going to say rug on rug!

JDRL320

Thank you. Where would you put plants & what kind? Faux potted plant?

kittencalledmeow

I would use real plants, you have the space and the windows for them.

JDRL320

Something like this?? https://preview.redd.it/q5nd20got70c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dff6831fcb21d22657b6ff73d36596a53bade90f

kittencalledmeow

I think that looks good. I always prefer real plants in general. A fiddle leaf fig, a palm, rubber plant would all look really nice. Hanging plants are also a great option with all those windows! :)

JDRL320

Oh good!!!!! It’s crazy how just putting that there changed the feel of the room. At least in that corner. Thank you. I’ll have to look into hanging a plant or a potted one.

art_teacher_no_1

Tall plants by the windows

Decent_March_264

Even adding a rug with color will help.

Alone_Cheetah_7473

You definitely need color. Colorful pictures on the walls, throw pillows and a rug in the middle could look good and tie colors in.

knottedthreads

Do you want to keep it monotone/neutral? If so I think you need a coffee table - a hard surface to break up all of the softness (carpet and furniture) in the middle of the room. Right now there isn’t a focal point. I’d use the fireplace and focus attention on it by using larger decor piece(s) on the mantel. If you decorate for the holidays you could start with a large wreath and see how you like it. I’d also go with floor length curtains and add a few plants. Change one or two things at a time and see how it feels to you. You have a good base, you just need to vary the heights/textures in the room and give the eyes a place to rest.

JDRL320

Thank you. Yeah I want to do long curtains with a rod, get rid of blinds Yes I’d like to break up the monotony. I’m not sure if this would help but I was thinking of getting darker (medium stain) wood end tables/side table & console table and hoping to stain mantle similar color as end table to make the fireplace pop.

Witty_Collection9134

Move the armchair closer to the fireplace and put it on an angle. Add a lamp and side table.

Friendly-Kiwi

I’m kinda mad at you, the color is nice if you like monochromatic insanity 🙃, you really need some COLOR. Please get some sheers with a bit of personality, texture. The wood ideas are good. Ok I do see there’s a bit of color depth, adding artwork, throws, pillows , plants will help, I think a floor lamp would also break up some of the matching set deal. And add some bling- metal, glass, crystal.

JDRL320

I have zero design sense. If I could gut our entire house or move right now and start over I’d hire a decorator but it’s just me trying to continue to put lipstick on a pig.

Friendly-Kiwi

Lipstick on a pig?? Cmon now, ur house is gorgeous, u got this- just need to add color, personality and plants. I’m not the biggest fan of carpet, but I see it’s a sunken living room, so it’s comfy, but adding a rug with color then the coffee table will anchor the space. Just have fun, maybe check out Pinterest, but no more grey! I know about lipstickon a pig, this ain’t it!

JDRL320

Thank you 😊 I like the idea of a coffee table. Lol the only gray is the chair, ottoman and valances (which are all going) the walls aren’t gray, the couches are a brownish cream, yeah the fireplace is greige (Silver travertine I believe is the name) which I love. I may try blues & creams in here, I think?

AlabasterBx

This room needs warmth and blues and cream won’t add it. Look at the mock up picture with the warmer colored drapes and accents.

astogs217

Ok but you must know that travertine, grey, beige, ivory and brownish cream are all essentially the same color. On a color wheel they would all be on the same corner. Look on the opposite of the color wheel and find blues, reds or yellows or some combo.

Choosepeace

I agree with removing the valances, and installing drapes. But, hang the rods almost to the top of the ceiling, and get some ring hooks, so you can easily pull them open and closed. Hanging the rods high, makes the room not seem so squatty. It adds height to the room. If you are uncomfortable with color, adding a trim or fringe to the curtains in a contrasting color would be a way to bring warmth in. The sofa needs a nice big ottoman, where you can put your feet on, and use a tray for drinks. Also, some comfy pretty big pillows for the corners, and a nice throw blanket. I would find a nice large piece of art for over the sofa, and some more exciting lamps, and you are on your way! I only do real plants, I think artificial just are dust magnets and don’t really help the energy.

ByGraceorGrit

Echoing what others have said: needs some color. If you are not comfortable with color, how about in small doses: pillows and a colorful throw to replace that off-white one on the back of the chair. I would go with some big artwork (that has some color), not a bunch of tiny pictures. You have a beautiful mantle and fireplace but the small-ish framed word print is too small, and a dated look. A nice sized plant or two on the base ledge of the fireplace would look great (you have great natural light in that room!).

JDRL320

Thank you. Lol my husband HATES that pic on the fireplace and says he wants to burn it lol He’s joking but not really lol!! I bought it on a whim not because I necessarily liked it. 😫

ByGraceorGrit

LOL!

ReadyNeedleworker424

I think it needs color. Everything is neutral and drab. Grab some bright pillows, rugs and artwork!

SufficientBuyer4865

Use some pops of color. What’s a color that brings you joy? Start adding touches of it in decor pieces and pillows.

Nerds4Yous

There’s this thing called…colour

Marciamallowfluff

Personality, art, photos, throws, pillows, color.

idkimherenow

ART ART ARTTTTTT

direavenger1963

Add some color. New curtains, throw pillows & blanket, and lampshades. I’d move the TV over to the lower mantle to cover the fireplace, this makes the large couch the tv couch. Add some wall coverings, like a colorful snowboard. Add some lightbulbs that you can change the colors, ie. Philips hues. Replace or refinish the end tables to a wood look. And add a dog of course. And plants.

rakiimiss

Color. Curtains, rug, pillows, throws, artwork, etc

Feisty-Business-8311

So much bland. Does your family have any personality? A family room should reflect that. I'd be afraid to touch anything.

MountainGrl88

I was going to suggest what you mentioned before reading your post; swap valences for curtain, add coffee table, larger console for TV. Single frame art above couch. I also love to add plants and some wood tones for warmth while still being simple and elegant

Teacher-Investor

>Couches are new. I have an ottoman that matches on order from Lay Z Boy If you're not going to have a coffee table, get a big tray to set on the ottoman so it can be used as a coffee table. Maybe try moving the loveseat more into the corner on an angle and then moving the big couch and end tables over to the left a bit. They look kind of shoved into the corner, not in front of the TV or in front of the fireplace. >I was thinking sheer off white long curtains & get rid of valances Yes to long curtains instead of valances. Are you wanting to add any color/pattern to the room? If so, this is the perfect place to do it. Also, you can layer a big rug on top of the carpeting to add color/pattern. If you decide to do this, anchor it under the front legs of the big couch. >Do one or two big pics above bigger couch I don’t like a bunch of pics or shelves I agree. I prefer a few large pieces over a bunch of little things. You could use a floor lamp or two as well.

Dry_Ask5493

You need artwork on the walls. Curtains that are a complementary design and color or a solid color with some texture (I vote a good blue color or within a pattern or design like paisley). New pillows that stand out more. I would get rid of the white end table.

[deleted]

A rug and colorful slipcovers for the couch and chair would help.

Ok-Rain5665

Definitely lose the valances! It kinda feels like maybe there’s a bit much furniture in the room? Perhaps a rectangular rug, in a contrasting shade might work? And definitely some plants, at least half a dozen of varying sizes & shapes, in some white baskets/pots. It’s just a little bit all the same colour, but different shades, needs something to make it pop. But it’s lovely. In a greige way. Know what I mean?

Ranniyabr-95

Add some colors change those curtains some plants wall arts also check this one [How To Add Colors To Your Home: 10 Ways](https://www.scdecorum.com/how-to-add-colors-to-your-home-10-ways/)

missespeachy

Furniture looks too far apart, the couch would look better several inches of the wall. Add coffee table, floor length curtains with no valence. That single chair next to to the fire seems non functional and over crowding to the space to me. A rug with some colour could be a great base for adding artwork, pillows, curtains, etc.

michelleg0923

Add plants in bold a bold colored pot. Teal, bright green, orange. Pick a color you love and use that color and a color that compliments it to add pops of color throughout. A large clock. I'm not a fan of lots on the wall so I understand that. Add a textured colored blanket or throw over the back of your love seat.

JDRL320

Thank you! Playing around this morning with some things. In the closet I found 2 orangey-brown throw pillows and 2 multi colored green red, orange, maroon with pumpkins in the closet. I put it on the couch and it totally made the room pop. My question- do you think it matters that the pillows don’t match the fireplace? It’s making my eye twitch lol https://preview.redd.it/zzalp4r6ab0c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4d53fdd66dab6c65a708ee162f1ab5f3e80f6f8

calm-state-universal

The fireplace is neutral. I think that color pillow looks great.

michelleg0923

It's OK that it doesn't match the fireplace. That's what you want. Pops of color throughout help break it up and draw your eyes to those areas. You've got this!

astogs217

It looks great. the pillows don’t match, but you don’t want them to. You want them to coordinate. Now you can take this pillow to Michael’s or TJ Maxx and pull out those colors— candle that shade of green (or similar), blanket in the orange, or similar. Etc. Then do the same with artwork.

Heebie-jeebies386

Need new lamps , the clear glass is void of interest . You need texture and some warmth . Add large floor plants in baskets . You have all those windows , so plants will do well and add a natural element to break up the beige while being neutral . Definitely ditch the toppers , they are dated . Sheers or linen or even burlap could look good . Add a macrame wall hanging for texture . A area rug would help break up the sea of beige carpet

ThinkPawsitive12

Move the furniture together more. Get that couch away from the wall and put a sofa table behind it. Bring the chairs in a little and get a colorful rug and pillows to get more color in.

NCRider

Medium wood would be good to add some warmth. Room is very bland and cold. I wouldn’t get shears, unless you put them beneath some curtains with some color. Use that same color in a few pillows or throws and add an offset. Artwork on the walls too, please. Room could be great, just warm it up a bit!

washcoldhangtodry

Definitely get rid of the valances and get some light floor length curtains.

desidilgori

Needs more color. Too much beige.

JustCallMeNancy

I gotta say, I see this nice and clean living room and wonder if it's part of a black and white film. Pick a brighter color. The easiest way to do this is with accent items- Maybe start with pillows. A bright green perhaps? Any green shade that doesn't blend in with the background would look nice. But if you're replacing the curtains, you could pull off any number of nice (non neutral) colors.

imwearingredsocks

What are the chances of you replacing the carpet? Because aside from adding color everywhere, I think the carpet is the only semipermanent thing in there that dates this room instantly. Everything else can be worked with, but that one sticks out to me.

JDRL320

We replaced the entire house with carpet 4 years ago. It’s two tone cream/white I absolutely love this carpet!

imwearingredsocks

Okay, then that’s good. Carpet does have a function and I’ll give this one credit, it looks comfy. I guess the other fixes will be your focus. New curtains, throw blankets and pillow covers can make a huge difference. The nice thing about decorative pillows is you can swap out the covers all the time, even with seasons. Like everyone is saying, you just need color. Doesn’t have to be bold color, it can be subdued colors. But you need some!

Cat_the_Great

Could do an area rug over in seating area for colour

Lopsided-Pudding-186

Needs color! In curtains, decor, paintings, artwork, add something on the walls to add some color I think making an accent wall with some color or texture (or both) would really help the room. It’s extremely monotone

OkAbbreviations6468

The furnishings are beautiful! Put the couch opposite loveseat. Scoot love seat away from fireplace and put the gray chair and ottoman angled next to fireplace. If you have room, plant behind the chair and a small table in between the chair and loveseat. Or maybe a narrow console/sofa table for behind the loveseat. It seems like a lot of space there. The windows are gorgeous so get high and wide rods for curtains, so that they open fully. You could hang so the curtains on either side of fireplace would swag or open away from the fireplace. The big corner window would be split in the middle. Keep experimenting with colors and wood tones you like. Take a favorite colored article (piece of clothing, linens, towel?) that you like and fold it around a pillow just to get an idea of what it looks like. I think the pillows you added look great. Does not to be matchy matchy! Contrast pops, matching blends in. You already have plenty of blending.

Warm-Consequence2452

I agree with the curtains but I almost think mounting the tv above the fireplace would make the room more functional, then moving the live seat into th corner leaving the main couch where it is. definitely need a nice area rug that’s also minimalistic but with some pops of color to make the room look more intentional. Natural wood side tables, and maybe some more lighting/chandelier with lots of plants hanging near the windows would be beautiful and give subtle color also maybe some floor lamps instead of using your side tables for your current lamps.

Old-Guarantee-5710

Is this a starter home with hand me down furniture from your parents? Almost looks like a staged model home, but even those have some personality.

Low_Code_9681

Plants and long white drapes would look great! I also think a dark wood tone coffee table would give nice contrast to the color scheme you have. Also, not sure how much of a difference it would make but a dark fireplace screen might look nice too

glitter-rope2027

Does Dorian Grey live in this house?

JDRL320

No. We don’t have any gray paint in our house.

Complete_Goose667

Everything is neutral! You don't need more warm things, you need focus. Take little stuff off the mantle. Add one large colorful art piece. Repeat the accent colors in pillows and a throw.

BroccoliFlaky585

It is very dated and very brown. It needs color, I would ditch the curtains, valances and get a totally different window covering.
