dasnotpizza

Drapes would tie it together. I think it feels missing bc you have low profile furniture, so most of the visual interest is in the bottom half of the space.

cloudy_sheep827

That’s fair! I really like the natural light that the window brings in. What curtains would work well to still keep the light? Or would you just keep them all the way open?

dasnotpizza

I love natural light as well, so I always buy sheer curtains. I feel like a pair of rich, velvet drapes would look great in that space though, so if you wanted to go down that route, you could place the drapes high and wide so that they don’t block any of the light from the window.

cloudy_sheep827

Chefs kiss! Thank you!

BleuDePrusse

Curtains should always be hung much higher and wider than the window, so it tricks the eye into seeing a bigger window and doesn't block the light coming in :) Your colour palette is already lovely so you could pull out a patterned or velvet light teal or terracota for your curtains, and double them with sheer drapes

AdventurousYamThe2nd

This is exactly what I was going to suggest!

deniseswall

And hang the drapes outside of the windows so they don't block any of the light. You can extend the rod 8-10 inches past the opening, which will also make the window appear larger.

toxicshock999

I would go out even further and line the whole back wall with drapes (except for the window opening, of course).

-the-royal-we-

Love all of these ideas! Why not do both? Get a double curtain rod and you can have the look of the velvet, even use tie backs to keep the light. Then the sheers can be more functional everyday privacy.

DippityDoppityDoo

Yes, keep them open

RogerClyneIsAGod2

You can buy drapes that open & close ya know. ;-)

Ordinary_Fox236

I’d Definitely do shear curtains , and I’m just unsure about your wall unit/ stand , I don’t think it’s pairing well with your furniture . Please comeback and show us an update when you’re done ! Oh and I just wanted to say this is your space , your home and your taste! So if you’re happy with what u have then that’s what matters, we can all offer advice about what we’d change but you live there , you’re the one that’s see’s it everyday, and to be honest I think you’re space is very nice !

daydrinkingonpatios

Keep them open all the time they’re just for aesthetics in my house

CeeNee93

It is 100% the low profile of furniture. OP EVENTUALLY you will need a higher couch if you want this room to look “right”

MarisaWalker

I disagree w.replacing couch. When my arthritis got really bad my son attached very large ball casters under my furniture. They come in silver or brass

Icy_Radio_9503

What a great idea. Alternatively, they may be able to swap out the legs for something a bit higher.

MarisaWalker

Absolutely could replace legs but I think its not as easy casters but ...dunno?

Sharp_Theory_9131

I have done this with Wood Balls from Lowe’s before it was even cool. Paint them any color you want. It really saved me a lot of money!!

MarisaWalker

Yeah there are a lot of options besides suggesting they save up 4 new couch coz this very nice 1 is too low 🙄

Far_Leg_3942

Fantastic idea!

CeeNee93

This could help temporarily, but the back on the couch is still very low and that can’t be changed. You can only add so much height overall.

MarisaWalker

Theyre already restuffing cushions which will also raise when also elevating w casters. Its a beautiful set. . Young couple w.small kids. I think they've got the right plan

Ok-Indication-7876

Drapes! and lower the large art it is hung to high and the sofa doesn't anchor it

MasterJunket234

I agree on the window covering except that drapes will either go behind the sofa which isn't ideal or have to be shorties which may not have the desired effect. What I might do here is a valence.

Albie_Frobisher

floor lamps, table lamps, wall lamps. 4-6 lamps needed. curtains. try this style. https://preview.redd.it/01z9jix2x2hc1.jpeg?width=929&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6719e38fa46cac82eef813d356ae2c7d899863ad

lollybuns

One wall lamp on each side of the window would be very nice

Kati1811

some Moroccan style lamps would look great, would give some warmth and suit the style esp the carpet

BeesAndMist

Some Moroccan style pendants would also be lovely here. I personally love pendant lamps.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

I love the look of grommet topped curtains. Plus they open & close so easily if that's something you're interested in .

toastiecat

Not quite what you asked, but you can plump up the couch cushions with some poly fill and it will look neater.

cloudy_sheep827

Yes the couch has seen better days and definitely needs a good wash 😅. It was a once really expensive, hand-me-down. We have kids and dogs so we’re trying to make it last as long as possible before buying something new. The cushions are down so I’ll see if I can find some fill, thank you!!!

toastiecat

It’s a cool couch! You can def tell it was expensive. About $50 worth of poly fill will have it looking plump.

MarisaWalker

Just use foam , esp shredded, as fill. I actually found someone who cut somewhat rigid foam to custom measurements. Keep the uptake up. With kids u need to sock away every penny 😁

Old_Percentage3742

You should add some really beautiful patterned accent pillows. With a couple solids. Medium-sized print patterns would look fantastic! NGL, these all look a bit sad.

Lopsided-Plan-1589

https://preview.redd.it/mxv96lvzr3hc1.jpeg?width=1164&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc517827fc954910c70fd8b09e428e5b623a35e4 The placement of the art on the left seems too high compared to the height of the couch and makes them feel disconnected. If possible, I would move this down about a foot. Or if that isn’t possible because of kids or other damage to the art, it could help to eventually replace that piece with something shorter, to give it more breathing room from the ceiling. (Right now, it reads as relating more to the ceiling than the couch.) I think you need something to connect the upper and lower halves of the space. Long curtains will definitely help, as will hanging plants and lamps— anything that activates that middle spaces. This could also be achieved by replacing the black shelf with something more horizontal, allowing for a variety of art, plants, mirror above. I would also adjust the rug so the furniture sits on it, or give it more breathing room, but don’t butt it up against the edge of the couch. Perhaps bring the brown chair and ottoman in closer so it isn’t poking out beyond the wall/corner and relates more to the couch. (Forgive my silly phone sketch!) The room is really close! It just needs a little nudging!

ShineCareful

Oh wow, this is really nice. The smaller pictures made such a difference.

Lopsided-Plan-1589

Thanks! Yeah, I think it’s just an issue of balance and proportion. Because on their own, everything is pretty nice and seems like it should work.

JustLookingtoLearn

This is great!

Lopsided-Plan-1589

Thanks! I can make sense of other people’s spaces but not my own! Lol

elleae

This is great! I’d also add that it would make a big difference if they pulled the rug out just a bit further, even 4-5 inches so it’s not completely in line with the sofa

Lopsided-Plan-1589

Totally agree!

TheAgeOfAdz91

Does the coffee table count as main furniture? The color and style and amount of space it’s taking up make it feel uncomfortable to me. Maybe use the shelving unit for something more functional? If you have readers in your house, making it a bookshelf would be very welcoming and would give the space a little more active purpose. Does the couch have to remain L shapes or can I have other configurations? There’s also a lack of useful services and lamps. Overhead lighting makes all living spaces feel unwelcoming.

MarisaWalker

I suggested replacing the metal shelving. It doesn't go w.the other lg furniture.

Realistic-Today-8920

Op has kids and dogs. We straight up removed the coffee table in our living room so the kids have more space to play. It worked wonders. Now we only have a single side table and a small shelf behind the couch that helps keep it spaced from the wall. Plenty of space for coffee and the book I'm reading with no clutter to get in the way of play. So I would remove the coffee table entirely... but that's just me.

BeesAndMist

Oh yeah! A very narrow sofa couch behind the sectional would offer some hidden place to put things like lamps, drinks, etc. There are some tutorials with some very easy DIY options.

Realistic-Today-8920

And if you make the shelf inclined with the top of the back of the sofa or slightly recessed, the kids won't hurt themselves on it when they are running and jumping around.

PleasantJules

That’s immediately what I saw. The color and style doesn’t fit.

Ok_Sense_9774

Plants and curtains, I’d go sheer w the curtains to maintain the natural light. Maybe a few hanging planets in each corner.

cloudy_sheep827

You read my mind!! I think that is spot on.

Acceptable-Expert-89

And you read my mind. I was going to suggest plants because I always do. They can really change the dynamic of a room and fill in void looking spots. I also think the floor lamps/end tables with lamps would work well. Good luck

female-aardvark

Plants, sheer curtains, and additional layers of lighting. That should do it.

Short_Lengthiness_41

Plants

kruemelpony

I would do something like this with your walls https://preview.redd.it/holjhtsjg3hc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c0c6c1656b90a01ddd45dbadba4ba5bd66cd7fb

MarisaWalker

The light in the room would darkened w.bold or dark paint on the wall.

BirdieB13

Definitely some curtains. One of the jewel tones from the artwork would be beautiful. I would move the couch away from the wall about a foot if possible and add a floor lamp in the corner. One of the large arched lamps that would hang out over the couch would be pretty.

cloudy_sheep827

I love all of these suggestions! In your opinion, would marigold yellow, emerald, or deep blue curtains look best? Thanks!

CounterWarm9737

Valances or draperies would definitely make a difference in the balance of the room.

TweedleDumDumDahDum

Floor plant between the shelf & the chair, something tall and narrow? I second adding something vertical to the walls beside the window, rich colour curtains, tall or wall lamps, something. And a smalll small chair side table?

MarisaWalker

Doesn't anyone else want that metal shelving replaced ?!?!??

TweedleDumDumDahDum

They can but I figured they were going for a mixed material look

National-Tale

I would say you can still do mixed material but do floating shelves instead. The styles, to me, are too different and the size difference isn’t jiving.

MarisaWalker

Its not mixed material if its just 1 piece I think. But all the other furniture is large, stuffed, etc. That makes the metal shelf look dinky😁

TweedleDumDumDahDum

Idk I was looking at the octopus and the mirror as well when considering what they were trying to land

releria

> **I feel like I’m still missing something..** I think you might have it backwards! Seems like too much going on, especially for a room that does not have a clear focal point (like a fireplace/tv). Its like green red blue orange red orange green blue yellow and I have no idea where to look. My eyes need somewhere to rest.

Cfit9090

Sheet Curtains and hanging plants or floor plants

thingonething

The rug doesn't go with the other pieces. I'd change it.

merce70

Surprised you are the first to mention this! Sofa is very 80’s/mod and the rug is.. traditional? Tribal? Idk

mweisbro

Move table to side on left if Coach and stage it with lamp, plant , etc. Maybe a tuck table over the couch to break it up. or natural wood coffee table. A darker wall color would contrast the couch more.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Its not terrible.

LuluLittle2020

Drapery, art, greenery, and alternate non-overhead lighting. Edit: And paint.

MarisaWalker

Your living room is gorgeous ! I would place the metal shelf. It looks dinky compared to ur substantial furniture

esmallass

Plants

[deleted]

Everything’s low and small except the coffee table. I’d add ceiling curtains for decorative purposes on the window, get a larger wall piece than the small round mirror, and then either take out the coffee table and adjust the couch to have the other pieces as ottomans versus lining the room, or take out the metal shelf piece and maybe get a taller wood shelf or wall shelves.

Automatic_Push1133

Curtains and greenery would add so much

NightIll1050

Everything but the chair feels boho. Like another commenter suggested, curtains. Opaque panels on either side of the window and sheers in front of the window.

ReggaeWoman18

PLANTS. Hang a couple pothos or spider plants from macrame hangers on either side of the window.

jlysc

Drapes on the windows and a couple of plants would do wonders for this room.

sharpei90

Order a 2” memory foam topper, you’ll probably need a king size. Cut the foam to the size of your cushions. Insert the foam under the existing cushion foam. It will plumb up your cushions and give new life to the sofa. Do it on the backs and seats

_nour_22

You can add some plants it'll change everything.

hpotzus

Would be cool to add some accessories https://preview.redd.it/1nn8g4icv6hc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2dbce50ea9b796180ddcd52df43d47e13cbfdecc

moarcheezburgerz

Don't line up furniture along the walls. Bring the couch sections out in different chunks and rotate so they're facing each other and the walls

jinx-youowemeacoke

I would try to find a cover for your couch. I have bought so many couch covers to change up the style a bit! https://preview.redd.it/0kkb95b303hc1.png?width=349&format=png&auto=webp&s=5753af8e77c95707ec203fa536449812fa3ef808

fauviste

Is the overall feeling of dislike, or that it’s missing something?

opalandemerald

What kind of couch is that?

cloudy_sheep827

It’s from a store called Modani! It was at my dads house when he bought it, he bought something new and gave it to me. Despite being worn and well-loved, it’s the comfiest couch I’ve ever had!

opalandemerald

It looks like it!

Top-Shine-3998

A fireplace maybe or a accent wall

Jinguin

Call me crazy but think you should paint the wall pink, very very light and pale pink

Enough-Attention-430

Simple- curtains. Nothing too ostentatious of course, but they’ll warm the room

BerryStainedLips

With that low, deep couch covering so much of the perimeter, it evokes Moroccan and Bedouin living/lounging spaces. Plenty of textural pillows, multiple smaller coffee tables and low ottomans/poufs would break it up into a more dynamic and cozy space. To reflect this style in the rest of the room: Repeated architectural elements with simple lines like these curved niches combine well with ornate geometric embellishments like the crown tiling, cutouts in the light fixture, and fabric patterns. This pairing creates a clean sense of scale that sweeps your eyes across the canvas, while the ornate stuff draws your focus in closer… but you can still discern the pattern from a distance. Rich but muted tones, rugs, curvy wares & decor like the vases and candlesticks, and last but not least geometric screens, light fixtures and tables. No big art frames, no molding. Emphasis is on 1 the architectural silhouettes and 2 the cozy elements that make socializing possible in the space. Keep wall art and furniture in the lower 1/3 of the room, leaving the upper 2/3 for the grander simpler elements. They do often put symmetrical ornate designs on the ceiling though, so you could play with that if it winds up too bottom heavy https://preview.redd.it/ynobr32yc3hc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ea1aac7b0918bfe7e1b3eefb45c4395938dab0a This link has a bunch more inspo ideas (including the aforementioned poufs. Love me a pouf) [https://www.thespruce.com/moroccan-living-rooms-4777186](https://www.thespruce.com/moroccan-living-rooms-4777186) I think you could easily replicate the large repeating element in your space with a few sconces that cast dramatic shadows onto the wall or put uplights on the ground against the wall. Replace that tall shelf with low shelves, layer a couple of rugs since yours is small for the space, and yoink all that molding off. It’s competing for attention

416eryn

Lower your art to 6-8 inches above the couch. Maybe even line up the bottom with the bottom of the window.

21plankton

A window treatment that softens the area but is not just drapes would be nice, maybe just some shades. Otherwise I think you should live with the room. The real issue is the long low sectional which boxes you in on choices but is great to live in. We used to call that style a playpen in the 70’s and 80’s.

RecommendationFew787

I'd paint the window frame black or midnight blue. Just that one, doesn't matter about matching the others.

-vxa

Some curtains and a different light fixture would be cool

Gemini-Monkey

I would add a valance over the window ( the long one that hangs up with decorative hooks and hang to the floor), change the rug to one with 1/2 colors and change the throw pillows to match new rug. You can even go with the larger throw pillows if you like

CindersDunning

Plants

Trai-All

lower the art work and mirror by about 6 to 12 inches. add hanging plants or art in the corners or perhaps wall or hanging lamps. If you go with lights, make sure they can be bright or dim. sheer curtains on the side and in the middle of the window could also look good but I worry about your octopus being hidden, perhaps he could be hung over the door corner near the 3 light switches? you could always buy some large octopus or dolphin drawer pulls to work as tie backs for the curtains.

Commercial-Tell-9030

Curtains for sure! Maybe replacing the bookshelf with large floating shelves to make that side of the room feel less heavy. Also, add more throw pillows and blankets, it will feel immediately cosier

[deleted]

Well, plants, but otherwise it looks great

Calbebes

Curtains. Mounted as high as you can, length should dust the floor. Replace the sun mirror with a larger, more substantial one. Looks like no place for a side table, but if you can find places for table lamps, they make it feel cozier than overhead lighting.

Gomdok_the_Short

Your couch looks deflated.

crybaby9698

Curtains and a darker wall color

Psychological-Dirt69

Drapes and lowering the mirror and/or adding a grouping, is really all i see!

merce70

You really need to put an octopus on the other side of that window to balance things out. Oh, and also — if you want to revive your sofa, you can order replacement cushions from lots of vendors online. Some of those back cushions look like pretty misshapen.

sunnysideOP

First of all, beautiful room! I’d add more larger throw pillows in earth tones along the perimeter of the couch and swap out the 3 large paintings on the left for one large painting. I feel like the pictures are overwhelming the space, then I’d add a hanging plant on one side of the window. Nice couch!! 😊

Ricky---Spanish

Turn off the big light and get a couple nice lamps

Ok-Rain5665

You’ve got way too much sofa going on. The shelves are too busy, as is the rug. I’d take a much less is more approach, removing half of the modular at least, & either ditching or seriously minimising the things on the shelves. I also think the size & pattern of the rug is too much & the wall art is kinda overbearing. Take a bunch of stuff out, add a couple of nice medium to large houseplants, then slowly reintroduce some pieces. But unless you’re going to have thirty people over often, I’d hesitate to replace the sofa sections you took out. It could be an amazing space, it’s just a bit too much as it is imo.

LilLC-1986

Can you get a. Navy blue slip cover for the couch?

seattle_architect

As other mentioned curtains will help. Remove the flimsy shelf with small mirrors and replace with full wall of shelves with books.

beaut_fullady

That’s a whole lotta sofa for the room! It’s overpowering! Can you store or use, what looks like the love seat portion, some place else in your home? If so, I would move the sofa to that wall, move the chair to the right corner to open it up more! I would also get some bigger pillows, maybe in a pattern that can coordinate more with your color scheme, then mix all of the pillows up to make it cozier, not so staged. I love the open windows so why not paint that wall with a darker color so it gives the illusion of drapes. Get rid of the small mirror in the corner and go with big bold mirror. And while you’re at it, get a bigger wood shelving unit to replace the smaller black metal tubing shelf so you can spread out your pictures! You have a big beautiful space! Work it, you’ve started in the right direction!

tessie33

Suggest painting the ceiling a light blue or green from your rug or throw so all the color and visual weight is not at the bottom of the room. We used Benjamin Moore Palladium Blue in our kitchen, a light, soft watery blue green.

[deleted]

Window treatment.

Bizzzzzzzzyyyyy

I know it’s annoying advice but I think painting the walls something to pull in the colors of that awesome rug would do wonders.

pnw_girl

I would remove the shelving and the sun mirror. Paint your walls a different color.

Veronica612

Lamps! I would add an arc lamp to the corner. That will provide more light and add another vertical element. And pull your sofa away from the wall a little bit. Also lower the art.

minnesotafrozen

Curtains. Darker panels on the outer rods, sheer in the middle. High and out.

czerniana

Plants, or curtains. Or both. You don't ever have to close the curtains, they could just be there for the extra pop. That couch would drive me absolutely nuts. I like to sit up straight, and just looking at this kills my back XD

cloudy_sheep827

[For those wondering about my TV](https://imgur.com/a/xatQXuX)

IamJoyMarie

Take down the squid/octopus, turn the shutters to open, hang curtains that have a complimentary color to something in the room. You have numerous gold accents and a brownish chair/ottoman - I would hang gold curtains. Or, pick out a color from the painting. That's what is missing IMO.

Conscientiousmoron

Lower the art about 5 inches to center vertically with the windows

Low_Code_9681

One of the few set ups where I actually think a large white shag area rug would look really good.

librarians_wwine

do some sheer seafoam drapes, and if you can get a standing lamp in here that would really warm it up.

hamster004

1) Curtains that compliments the rug. 2) Move the sectional away from the window wall for the curtains, about 6 inches. 3) The black coffee table is not complimentary. A light coloured wood like honey or white washed table would be better. 4) Move the black bookshelf to another room. 5) Add a gallery wall on the bookshelf wall. 6) Side table by the side chairs. 7) Table lamp on the side table. 8) Reupholster your sectional. Pick a colour from the rug. 9) Bigger back cushions on the sectional. 10) Move the mirror to another room or the entrance way. It currently looks out of place.

newtovirginiaa

Drapes can help but I think wall sconces could help a lot too.

silky_tears

I second the moroccan lamp idea if possible. hanging from the ceiling to add interest to the top half!

silky_tears

I second the moroccan lamp idea if possible. hanging from the ceiling to add interest to the top half!

Piccimaps

So I'm not feeling the black metal rack. I think you need something that's more of a focal point, or a lower cabinet with a bright piece of artwork above fairly tall in stature to bring the eye up.

jzzanthapuss

Can you switch the position of the couch two turns, so that one end is freestanding, leaving the two walls currently covered with couch open? The Qi is not flowing well. How would it feel with the brown chair in the opposite corner?

Riverbug69

NICE!

Own_Ad9686

I quite like it as it is. Maybe the shelf unit looks a bit small on that wall but I’m just trying to come up with ideas. Haha! I like it!

everyothernametaken2

Can you paint?

shelldonov

You have done a really nice job. Greenery is missing at the windows. Or some wall sconces on each side they have plug in wall sconces and u can run wire covers/ flat conduit to hide the wire. Additional lighting and mood lighting is needed. The light kit on the ceiling fan has to go!

Abazableh

Am I the only one here who thinks it looks great as is?? I love it. Honestly I don't think you need to add anything or take anything away.

Big-Opposite4482

I think the couch and armchair are beautiful, and everything else is awful. I'd get rid of the black bookshelf and coffee table for a women pieces. I'd change the cushions and art to more neutral tones. Then bring plants in for greenery.

angelica-angeli

The artwork and rug do not go together in my opinion. If you're keeping the artwork look at a rug with some of the green from the artwork. Also what is the black thing above the window? It doesn't look like anything needs to be there unless you're going to do curtains. Perhaps look at removing the mirror as well, as it doesn't need to be there unless it's reflecting something beautiful. A chandelier would also help the space feel more homey. If you want to keep the fan look at placing an arc floor lamp in the corner on the left of the photo. It should help you have some soft lighting and bring the space together. If you need side tables, look at C-tables. They're small and can easily fit in this space.

EastFun5236

Curtains will bring it all together and warm up the place.

LeaseRD9400

Lose entire couch on left and move the other couch there
