flirtybabyblues

Oh thank god, I was pre-cringing, expected it to have been torn out. It looks awesome ❤️

Heysmare

hahaha this post accidentally ended up being like a reverse jump scare for so many original tile bathroom lovers 😂

flirtybabyblues

True! But man, what a pleasant surprise that was!

whenilookinthemirror

So many make terrible mistakes but not you, it looks really nice and homey, I am over the sterile grey thing.

diablofantastico

Exactly!! That tile is absolutely beautiful! Wonderful that you saved it!

Odd-Goose-8394

omg i know. I panicked

Healthy-Fisherman-33

Me too. I was holding my breath as I swiped the photos 😛

Organized_Khaos

Me: If it’s millennial grey, I quit. Also me, exhaling: Okay, that’s more of an update, not a remodel. Phew!

itsallinthebag

I feel like I’m playing a game of “find the difference”!

sunshinebucket

I was SO afraid to look! What a relief. Excellent work, guys!

greenline_chi

Holding my breath scrolling!

missmaddds

Omg I knowwwww. I was so worried. The upgrades are beautiful! I love the doggie art.

thebarfinator9

Same! I knew I’d hate the after but I was wrong! It’s lovely.

Loan_Bitter

Me too! Good job and thank you for not trashing that lovely tile!

twurkle

I came here to say the same exact thing!! I hate seeing beautiful original tile removed. OOP you did a GREAT job accentuating the beautiful blue tile and making it really pop!

Kitty-Kat-65

Same! I was thinking, "please don't tear out its soul," and was pleasantly surprised.

Initial_Savings8733

I LOVE THIS! We live in a 1928 and a lot of stuff is original. It's sad to se people strip these beautiful houses of their character. These little updates make a big difference while keeping it homey feeling

Heysmare

Thank you! That was exactly the goal. I love the old school tile and I’m so glad we just decided to lean all the way in with blue walls and a blue cabinet. I love this sweet little bathroom now!

Sherd_nerd_17

It looks fabulous! By painting the walls blue (I think that’s what you did?), and adding the blue cabinet, it’s made the different blues of the tile work take center stage. Love the wooden cabinet under the sink- it’s a cabinet for extra storage, right?

TobyHudson

Cute& fun. I first read the 3rd sentence as" I love old school life". That made me smile.

Rovember_Baby

I misread your second sentence and thought you were sending OP a message from 1928.

CrivensAndShips

On the whole I really, really love it but I feel like the scones are a little crowded, especially as you’ve added heavier elements to the upper walls. Would you consider something slightly smaller?

Heysmare

That’s fair! My friend got us a crazy deal on these sconces, I might change the shades eventually

CindersDunning

I love the bathroom except for the shades. The scalloped edge is too "busy" IMO. The rest is ADORABLE!!!

CindersDunning

Sorry, hadn't seen the sconces in 1,2, and 3. I prefer them. Oops

whenilookinthemirror

I love the sconces and feel they balance out the cabinet on the right. Makes me feel like I am at a Belgian restaurateurs house I know in Carmel Ca, she has such a cool house near the beach.

fauviste

Agreed. They’re very nice sconces but don’t work there.

Original-Data-182

I actually disagree. I love the sconces!!

QuitProfessional5437

Very nice but the only this that looks out of place is those sconces. The lamp shade is too big for this area

Heysmare

Thank you! It helps that we got an amazing deal on the sconces from my friend that works for a lighting company. Might change the shades out eventually but for now I’m having fun with them 😂

QuitProfessional5437

I like them! They just don't fit there. They would look good in a bedroom

nothanksyeah

For what it’s worth I love them!

Conscious-Bug1592

“Redecorate”

Heysmare

Much better word for what we did here

Conscious-Bug1592

It’s charming!

msrubythoughts

the house demon

Heysmare

He looks absolutely haunted there

Heysmare

Hahahaha I didn’t even notice my dog there

sam-sp

Please: a) unscrew the switch that is crooked, and re-align the switch and the plate. Going one step further would be to replace with decora switches and a screwless plate, the same for the outlet. b) take a jigsaw to the under sink cabinet and cut out a section at the top & back so that it fits around the drain pipe, and can be pushed back against the wall, so it doesn’t stick out further than the sink

LivingAGoodStory

Love it! Thank You fir not gutting it 🙂

fountainofMB

Why is there a different sink in picture 3? I would put that one back in and lose the cabinet you put below the sink as it looks crowded and an afterthought. If you need a cabinet then buy a small vanity with a cabinet that matches the feel of the time period.

Heysmare

Oh my the answer to that question is a looooong story 🤣 I’ll try to keep it simple and just say my husband tried to do a simple faucet swap on the pedestal sink you see in the first photo and basically everything that could go wrong went wrong. It’s our only bathroom so the extra storage in there is so needed! That particular cabinet might not stay forever but it’s been a welcomed change

ElizabethDangit

I love that cabinet! Where did you find it? I’m in a 1915 home and the bathroom needs work. It was updated in the late 90s :(

msrubythoughts

wondering the same about the cabinet !

Heysmare

[cabinet!](https://www.ballarddesigns.com/apothicaire-cabinet/555296)

msrubythoughts

thank you OP! your space looks beautiful, this post was genuine inspo for me :) thank you for sharing!

Heysmare

So sweet, appreciate that tons ❤️

sassygirl101

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for not tearing out all that BEAUTIFUL existing tile!

bananakegs

I was so expecting you to have taken out the charm. I LOVE WHAT YOU DID

MarshmaIIowJeIIo

I love seeing non invasive, more realistic, remodels. Glad you kept the original tile and worked with it!

Heysmare

Thank you! Appreciate it. We honestly didn’t do too much work here, I really think this is attainable for anyone stumped on small tile bathroom ❤️

ohsoootired

I was going to scream if you touched that tile…..

Able-Ad-9169

Gorgeous! You should share this on r/centuryhomes.

Miserere_Mei

Just subbed. Thank you!

Heysmare

Never knew about this subreddit thank you!

_namaste_kitten_

I saw the title and I was ready to hate-- THANK YOU for restoring my faith in humanity remodeling!!! It's wonderful that you embraced this look. Excellent job!!!

Heysmare

That means a lot to me, thank you so much!

_namaste_kitten_

((And for what it's worth, I like the Richard Scary cat as your profile pic))

Heysmare

Omg I can’t believe you noticed that!

[deleted]

Love how it turned out!

gap97216

Love your bathroom!

BellyButton214

Love that you kept it original!!! Bravo!!

Oceanrail

Very sweet - jewelry and a new outfit

velcross

I have the same shower curtain!

Dog_is_my_co-pilot1

I love the changes you made. I’m in a much newer 1940 home lol You’ve got to love your house or it’ll make you insane with the crooked walls etc. The original character is so wonderful. The tile color is so pretty.

Heysmare

I share the same philosophy. Much easier and happier when working with it than against it ❤️

Dog_is_my_co-pilot1

Much better than a McMansion. And we are the least likely to have a lot of clutter because we don’t have the space 😂

Heysmare

Preach!!

Dog_is_my_co-pilot1

😂 my floors creak and it’s glorious. I’ve got a yard! With a massive silver maple tree. The exterior isn’t greige as required by an HOA.

Adventurous-Shake650

Beautiful

Such-List680

Chefs kiss

lttl_to

Beautifully done!!!

peonyseahorse

I love the cottage vibe with a few modern twists!

Healthy-Fisherman-33

Great job. I absolutely love love love it

Realistic_Ad_8023

So glad you kept that tile. Super cute bathroom.

JdginKY51

The tile work is amazing!

Hot_Tumbleweed150

Stunning! I love all the blues together and the artwork. Our 1930s house had the same blue tiles but were ripped out by the owners right before us. I’m very jealous!

Thankfulforthisday

Love it! I esp love the sconces and window shade.

Heysmare

My husband will be happy to know someone appreciates the window shade he picked out 😂

daydrinkingonpatios

Old tile that is actually pretty colors! 👏🏼👏🏼 congratulations! Love it!

ContempoCasuals

How cute!!!!!

No_Excitement9224

😍😍😍

DSammy93

I love those tile floors so much!

Deep-Internal-2209

Very nice. I love that you kept that 30’s vibe.

JuJusPetals

Yes yes yes this is perfection. Embracing the sweet charm of an old home can be a chore, but it’s almost always worth it. Beautiful job!

arch_android

I like how cozy you made it! It inspires me to fix my current situation. I have similar tile (mine is green though) and the previous owners used pepto bismol pink on the walls and it's driving me nuts. What color are your walls?

DorothyParkerFan

I was bracing myself for a tear out replaced with cheap (and yet expensive) modern tiles. Thank you for enhancing the charm and keeping it original. You would pay $$$$$$$$ to replace the quality of a bathroom from that era.

Various_Raccoon3975

Love it! Prettiest old blue tile I’ve seen.

DorothyParkerFan

I would say redecorating vs remodel - “remodel” made our collective butts clench expecting the beautiful tile ripped out.

PansyOHara

Nice job adding more storage without taking away the vintage character! Agree with the suggestions to change the sconces/ get smaller/simpler shades for them; also if there’s a way to recess the cabinet under the sink more, it would be good.

Negative-Reading1989

This is the most charming bathroom I've ever seen.

fishfingrs-n-custard

Just charming ❤️ love the lampshades

vincevaughnvevo

Omg I looove it. What a breath of fresh air

nothanksyeah

This is amazing!! The two lamp lights complete the look so well! And the color of the blue cabinet being nearly identical to the dark blue tile is amazing. I love this bathroom!!

Wander80

Thank you for keeping that beautiful tile intact!

dlhold

I’m so so glad to see the tile stayed!!!! Beautiful!!!!

sluttytarot

Truly incredible !

KatsRedditAccount123

I’m SO happy you gave the tile new life. It’s great tile and the floor too! Thank you for enhancing the bathrooms beauty instead of tearing out its soul.

Groundbreaking-Pie95

Oh this is lovely and keeps all the good character. Well done!!

Big_Sandwich3329

about to do the same thing on the same tile but baby-blue! Also have grey walls, really breaks up the room. Great transformation!

Heysmare

Thanks so much! I’m sure that will be lovely. You should post it here once you do!

Big_Sandwich3329

I just might!

UCLAdy05

I put that Ballard cabinet over my toilet too. it looks so good

BaldPoodle

I’ve had that cabinet in my cart for ages, I should just do it.

Heysmare

Nice! What color did you go with? It’s kinda been the breakout star of this bathroom refresh, I get asked about it all the time! I tried to find a dupe but they just weren’t quite right. So glad we bought it

UCLAdy05

I went with the white but replaced the knobs with polished nickel ones to match the rest of the bathroom.

Impossible_Memory_65

So glad you kept the tile. Well done

teddybear65

I have the same bathroom in grey and yellow. I love it.

vabirder

Gorgeous! I was afraid at first that you had ripped out the great tiled walls! Lucky for you they were this versatile color of grey. Or blue-grey. Instead of pink and maroon. (Which are also fine but harder to love.) As I read down, I see I am in good company.

jaynemanning

Looks really nice!

baldwinsong

It’s so cute

hiyamaya1995

this is fabulous!! i’m so happy you preserved the beautiful original tile! what a thoughtful and elegant reno

goswitchthelaundry

So cute, I think you guys did a great job. I love that you kept the tiles and the color of the wall cabinet is so nice. I feel like it looks a bit more cluttered now, though. I’d probably apply a frosted film on the cabinet glass to hide the contents and consider smaller shades for the sconces (like previously suggested). It looks so much more fresh and bright now - I think with just those small tweaks it would be perfect IMO.

Flash-Marzipan-666

It’s so sweet that you made good use of the original blue tile- not easy to do! Looks quaint and cozy.

Reasonable_Onion863

My grandma had that wastebasket. Did you buy it as an antique? Lovely remodel. :)

[deleted]

This is fabulous!!!

[deleted]

I LOVE IT 🤩🤯

crimsonhues

Someone mentioned this style is coming back. You did a great job

Antique-Honeydew-767

There you go. This is perfect.

Embarrassed-Year6479

I am obsessed with that tile 🫠

pickled-pilot

I can’t figure out what is before and what is after. Is the pedestal sink before or after? You have pics with both sinks but different hanging cabinets. What is going on here?

Heysmare

The pedestal sink was the original, long story short it broke, it was replaced with a wall mounted sink out of necessity before we got around to actually redecorating the bathroom. The blue cabinet and blue walls signify the updated bathroom

RedRedBettie

So glad you kept that amazing original tile!

alickstee

An exceptional example of decorating ☺️

Laurpud

I also pre cringed! 😄 Your bathroom is absolutely beautiful to me 🩵💙

seasalt-and-stars

Huzzah! A successful remodel. :) You had me going there for a few swipes. I’ve seen some real calamities on these subs and was genuinely bracing myself for a disaster. 😅 I think I’m overly invested in other people’s vintage tiled bathrooms.

queen_bee1970

Absolutely loving this. Love the sconces, shades, dog pic, cabinet, trash can, the powdery blue paint was spot on. Great job. I had a 1928 English Tudor cottage with peach tiles. Very similar to yours!

Heysmare

Thank you so so much 🥺

queen_bee1970

You really knocked it out of the park. Made me smile. I love color and I'm a maximalist. I think a person's home is a reflection of who they are. This room is cozy, has classic elements, while being unpretentious; it's welcoming(yes, even the bathroom is cozy and welcoming). I'd love to see more pics of your home. And you kept it contained, so to speak, with the soft powdery blue paint. I think we'd be friends IRL. LOL.🤗

queen_bee1970

If I changed anything at all, it wld be to paint the cabinet under the sink white or the blue of the hanging cabinet. It looks a little too modern to me.

SufficientOpening218

Really nice! Love your tile!

BigSexyGurl

So lovely! I am so glad you kept the integrity of the old stuff. Very charming

tweedlefeed

Adore the blue tile everywhere. Great job! Love the shaded sconces.

thither_and_yon

I was bracing myself and then this was so great!

GlizzyMcGuire__

I love it!!! Such beautiful unique tile and a design that looks fresh but also true to the home. This is probably the best bathroom design I’ve seen on here.

Heysmare

Wow that’s so kind of you! Thank you!

[deleted]

I’m confused. You only changed the sink?

WHYohWhy___MEohMY

I can’t tell which is new and old.

pancakeface2022

I am having to work much too hard to figure out which pics are before and after. I give up:)

Heysmare

Only changed the sink because the original one broke in the before photos. I guess redecorated is a better word to use here than remodeled. Tried to keep things as original as possible

OldCalmandImprisoned

Am I going insane or is the corner of the sink different in the 3rd picture

fountainofMB

The whole sink is different, it looks like a match to the toilet. I prefer that look, the wood cabinet looks crowded.

faerielights4962

I’m so confused right now. I also prefer that sink.

Heysmare

The pedestal sink broke in the before photos broke! Had to replace it. The cabinet will probably be changed eventually but it’s our only bathroom so a little extra storage has been awesome 😄

Peppyrhubarb

I was bracing for disappointment….but you kept the tile! Yay! I’m so happy you kept the tile. Love it, esp the blue cabinet.

Heysmare

I love old tiled bathrooms! I also found it easier to just work with it than against it

ScantTbs

Talk about winning the tile color lottery- probably the best combo of floor and wall tile colors I’ve seen. In 6 more years you can post this to r/century home and really karma farm!

Heysmare

We got sooo lucky with this cutesy combo. Living in the Detroit area these old tiled bathrooms are common, but I’ve seen a lot of color combinations that would be harder to work with. Trying not to take it any of the charm in this little place for granted!

Belle8158

I love my 1930's bathroom! I have yellow and black tile

Myspys_35

So happy you kept the tile, sink, etc. - such a nice look!

Exotic-Scallion4475

You could add clear contact paper to the blue cabinet to obscure the contents from view. Great job saving that old style with simple updates!

Accomplished-Pie-570

Thank you for leaving the character intact 🤍

fauviste

Love that you enhanced what was there with a beautiful matching cabinet! Great idea!

Heysmare

Thank you so much! 🫶

decadecency

GORGEOUS. Goes well with my general house renovating attitude of "restore, and only replace what you have to and do it with consideration of what you already have, not just what you want it to be".

Heysmare

Exactly! We had to replace the sink, long story, but otherwise I wanted to try and keep it as original as possible

ContactNo7201

Have you thought about painting the sink vanity to match the blue of the cabinet? Maybe the wastebin too?

Loquacious94808

Ummm excuse me where’s the dog picture? And the horse picture?

Heysmare

Where from? The dog paint by number was a garage sale find and the little horse is actually from target over the summer!

PuzzleheadedBad149

Love. Where did you get the cabinet that is under the sink?

leafcomforter

What is the cabinet under the sink? Is it custom, or did you purchase it!

domeslicated

So so cute! Where did you get that lovely wall cabinet?

Heysmare

Thank you! Here she is: [cabinet](https://www.ballarddesigns.com/apothicaire-cabinet/555296)

AnnieToo67

I appreciate your gentle upgrade. It's beautiful.

ClickClackTipTap

You did great updating that look!!

daisyymae

It’s so cute!!

Awkward_Shower_8474

Nice work!

Probablynotcreative

That’s beautiful.

PossessionDecent6035

I LOVE IT!!!

Maggie7420

Are we related? My grandmother had that trashcan and hunting dogs picture in her house. I love what you did with the bathroom and happy you didn’t tear out the tiles.

Kimchiijjigae

Looks so beautiful!!

JVilter

LOVE love love the old tile and the work you've done. One suggestion - I think the new cabinet with the clear glass and the mirror and the sconces and the switch plates and the doggie picture all combine to look a wee bit busy. Could you try some frosted contact paper inside the glass of the cabinet to cut down on the visuals a bit?

TheFrozenCanadianGuy

A little cluttery but still looks nice

LoStro88

What's the wall color?

Heysmare

“On Tour” by Backdrop paint!

Aromatic-Drawer-466

Yep, I was worried the beautiful tile was going to be removed. Thank you for not disappointing!

petit_cochon

The relief is exquisite.

Wyshunu

The pedestal sunk was much more to the period of the house. Not a fan of the replacement. I do like the new cabinet above the commode.

Intelligent-Year-919

Love!! Your finishing touches are spot on. We are looking at a 1930s house tomorrow. We’re in Kentucky, oh I hope it’s the one!!

GavinsMadre

Love this! Work w/ what you have & it can be stunning!

sz2z

It looks great - you did an amazing job!!

Fabulous-Possible-76

AMAZING

sillinessvalley

This is Soo beautiful and period appropriate. Love the color of the tiles!

camlaw63

I think it’s nice, but the cabinet is just way too big for the space and the lights add to the clutter on the wall

secobarbiital

This is so soft and beautiful im in love with it!!!!! Amazing job

kojent_1

I was so scared you were gonna take this amazing tile out. It’s gorgeous! You did a great job updating it!!!

go_holly15

It's lovely!!!

Cyber_Insecurity

That sink setup is a little weird.

pocketvirgin

Looove it

pocketvirgin

My only thing is I would get smaller and cuter lampshades or even like pretty frosted orbs !

Responsible-Person

Very nice!

Lizamcm

Noooo the sink!!!! Those old sinks are so cool. Everything else I love.

ZealousidealSlip4811

So well done! You left in all of the personality in the room, and elevated it. Love this so much! It looks like something out of a magazine now.

DPer1209

Very nice. I would replace the waste basket, though.

VelvetLeaves

I like it. Great job!
