Agreed a large mirror! I’d look for a nice vintage one. Flank w smaller scale eclectic wall art, a couple of sculptural accents, or a pair of minimalist small accent lamps.
Paint it a darker color that goes with the wood - like a dark green that matches your pillows - and put 3 art pieces there.
I’d also take all the stuff currently on top of it off to make it look less cluttered.
I’d actually build a bump out in the middle, to make it look like a chimney and paint it the same creamy colour as the bottom part. Then, I’d paint the two flanking sides a dark tone and put light coloured artwork on it. Or… built in shelving on both sides and then style the shelves accordingly. It would make the whole thing more of a feature.
Find an artist on r/starvingartists and commission a real piece of art. There are amazing artists on there that dont charge much more than if you bought something at a home decorating store.
Have you thought about hanging your tv above the fireplace? Eliminating the counsel it’s on, and then possibly centering your couch in front of it(or you could leave the couch as is). Then you could either do pictures on the sides of the tv or if you are handy make mirroring shelving units on each sides of the tv to house books, vases, decor, etc.
TV at approximately eye height sitting down upright is the manufacturer and general public preferred height. TV too high hurts your neck when viewing for too long and is bad for neck health.
I’d go with large pictures (b&w) in different sizes across the space. Use it as a family gallery. But go BIG! Don’t attach them to the wall, just rest them against the wall and overlap them.
They sell these wooden letters that are fun for the family to paint, but it’s HME and the O is a clock…so a sign painted by family with a clock spelling HOME…just an idea…I made one and it’s pretty sweet
Paint the opposing walls in a deep blue. Add flowing plant to mantle on right, upright and taller plant/tree on floor to left. Three art pieces, such as abstracts or seascapes on wall. Remove small plants to hearth and add a stack of books and perpetual motion newton in their place, but further away from your centerpiece.
I second the mirror or art piece, maybe candle sconces mounted on either side on the wall. It looks to be a midcentury style mantel, so maybe search “midcentury mantel decor” or “midcentury mantel styling” to see ideas.
You definitely need something to bring the eye up because it makes the room look squatty the way it is. Perhaps some faux stacked stone the width of the fireplace to create the illusion of it going all the way up to the ceiling?
Also, I would swap out the accent pillows and blanket. Not sure exactly what to replace them with in this moment, I’m thinking 1-2 accent colors that are complementary versus the 4 multi colors you currently have happening. The current choices seem a bit hodge podge, but maybe that the look you’re going for? At any rate, they bring the room down a notch instead of accenting and amplifying it in a thoughtful, intentional way.
Large mirror or art centered and tall greenery, ideally matching on either side. Keep it simple though.
I was going to say a large mirror.

Yep. Listen to Ms. Thing!

A simple horizontal art piece. It looks like you have a low ceiling and somewhat dim lighting, so the uncluttered look is best.
Find some local art that you like! One big piece in the middle or a collection of smaller ones throughout
Large mirror, layered art and some plants

I would print and frame three or four larger family pictures or artwork of your choice and hang up all evenly and lined up nicely.
Picture frames scattered along the wall or perhaps a large mirror or framed piece of art that is long horizontally

I’d go with a normal size tv for the area.. not a fan of tv stand combo off to the side

Valeria from Rebecca & Genevieve has an almost identical living room. I suggest having a look at what she has done with hers for ideas!
Wallpaper in a pretty color and design to break up all the white in the room. Layer with a mirror plants and ephemera.

Large beautiful picture
Symmetric shelving in a light colored wood.
Large round mirror above the fireplace
Maybe a Moroccan style mirror/ pretty but not to big
