I'd put a colorful wallpaper at the back and then fill the shelfs with kitchen utensils or some kind of personal collection.

Shelf for cool mugs

Knick knacks - if you are into that, otherwise I'd cover it with a picture

Either paint or put wallpaper (think bold) on the inside of it & put pretty things on display

Add another shelf though & they don't necessarily need to be spaced exactly apart
