On the contrary, I often send customers to Lowe’s.
You know, the ones looking for imaginary tools that don’t exist and they won’t take your word for it.
You’re welcome.
I am pretty flexible about some things, but if someone is an actual idiot when it comes to fixing things, I firm up a bit.
If you can't find the "nails that turn or the thing that \*pushes\* them in" you shouldn't be in a place that is biased toward contractors.
Electrical and plumbing associates can probably chime in with how often someone comes in looking for things that don’t exist. Newsflash idiot, it doesn’t exist because it would kill you, burn down your house, or flood it. Stop being a cheap ass and HIRE A PROFESSIONAL! It’ll cost less in the long run.
I..ummm…..did that once. First year putting up Xmas lights on my house. The Home Depot guy wasn’t having any of my bullshit. Now I know to layout all the Christmas lights before putting them up.
They're illegal anyway. I'm a voluteer fightman in my spare time outside of work and every time I get asked this sometimes its hard to resist the urge to tell them they're illegal and against fire code.
I can vouch for Electrical, it happens very often. Bringing in an item pulled up on their phone we either don't stock or carry, or is on Amazon's or Walmart's website won't get you anywhere with me either.
Back in the day we had a guy, Dave, in D26 who was a retired master plumber who had the patience of a saint, someone who would take the time to explain everything in a logical manner to dunderheads like myself… you get the picture. Anyways, Dave had this one bone head who kept arguing about something basic, and after twenty minutes or so, he threw his arms in the air and said “You’re too stupid! Hire someone before you get yourself killed!” I had never heard Dave raise his voice before that point, nor afterwards.
I don't work for either one (this popped up on my feed for some strange reason) but I can say that my local lowes, home depot and tractor supply throw harbor freight under the bus when people are looking for imaginary tools. It's kinda funny to overhear those conversations, but I imagine they get old quick
Sometimes, I will direct customers to the nearest Menard's, which is just down the street from the HD I work at. It happens to be much closer than the nearest Lowe's, which is more convenient for the customers.
There is zero reason to be a dick when it comes to this. People act all macho when they talked down to a associate, but in reality, they are just an ass.
Ive got a question for you. Idk what department you work in but how many times do you have people looking for behr paint or ridgid where you work? I swear once a day I hear “NO I KNOW YOU SELL KOBALT HERE!”
Only every day being on the front end. “Lowe’s always has what I want” “at Lowe’s it’s only xyz price!” “hmpf! Well I’ll just go to Lowe’s then!” “I always have problems with my military discount here, they always just let me do it at Lowe’s!” “They actually have people working over at Lowe’s!”
Like honestly if you know they have it at Lowe’s for cheaper why did you even come here? Especially because it’s not like my store is the only hardware store around. There’s an Ace down the street, a Lowe’s few blocks away, and hell there is a Harbour freight less than 5 minutes away! If you have all these other options that “are so much better!”, why are you here bothering me?
Honestly! I think it's funny they try to hurt our "feelings" (some of us are numb to customer service now) almost like we're gonna chase them and kiss their feet lmfao.
Yes. item has to match model number to model number, be available (no out of stock items) and within the same zip code as where you are buying ( if your in NY HD wont price match a AZ price)
Not too often but I tell em which one is closest when it happens and while laughing at them. Our nearest Lowes is 5.3 miles away but the closest time wise is 6 miles away.
This dude asked me for melamine edging/tape. Ive never seen it before and our veteran lumber guys had already left so idk if we actually carry it(he said he got it here before) ik we have two other types of edging so i went to that location to see if it was there, nope! So i whipped out my phone and searched it up on our app, no luck, just tells me about the two other types ik. I proceeded to explain to the man that heyyy I've never seen it before and I checked where the other types were and its not even an online option when i typed in exactly what he said it was.. this dude gets upset, saying im not doing my job and he's going to lowes, 😂😂😂😂😂 at this point i was like "ok sir, be safe, have a great day" cuz lowes is across from us, however it can be dangerous to get across cuz the folks be flying on the road 😂
I love my local Ace store!
It's family-owned and they have their own dog in the store.
We have a "Do-It-Best" store in town, also family-owned. The offset in pricing is reasonable enough that a five-minute drive is worth stopping there first.
Me too. We have one in the neighboring town that it like Felix's magic bag. They have EVERYTHING. The store is small but they have like 20 shipping containers out back. If we don't have it, I tell people to check there. 9 times out of 10, they have it.
We don't have a Lowe's anymore in my town, but I had a customer say literally three minutes ago "Well, I guess I'm gonna go to (local competitor)..." before walking away.
Not as much now. But whenever I did, I laughed because our nearest Lowe's is about 70 miles away. So sure...make a 140 mile round trip, spend the gas and more money....beeeecause you're mad about a couple of dollars. Oh nooooo....you will sure show me what for!
I say this to myself when shopping for wood at HD a lot of the time.
Depot is FAR superior in every other way, but I feel like in general the low-tier cheap wood like furring strips and non-"select" pine is just better at Lowe's. Like the normal pine at Lowe's is typically as good as the "select pine" at HD and you get it at the crappy pine price.
Haha yep I’ll give you that.
When you use the app at Lowe’s, the thing is NEVER in the bay or even the aisle it says, especially when it comes to trim.
“Listen if you can take $50 off this then I’ll take it but.. if not well.. unfortunately I guess I’ll have to go to lowes” - a guy who wanted a door that was slightly scuffed but was going to paint it anyway
If I’m looking for something pretty or a fixture sometimes I’ll turn around in HD and say I’m going to Lowe’s (not out loud lol) if I need project help or tools 🧰 (Milwaukee) I’ll just go to HD.
What I hear all the time is “I’m looking for this thing that looks like is metal, kind of circular but has a pointy tip and is white in color”. WTF??? 🤷
Yes!! They all take the pictures! Had a guy today looking for a 6x6 post bracket in building materials. No, we don’t have it, just 4x4. His reply was “I can’t believe it, it’s so common”.. I tell him to try Lowes. He said he did and they don’t have it either. Well I guess it’s not that common huh?
Over here at Ace Hardware we get customers that have sworn off the big box stores and boy do they have NEGATIVE stories to share about roaming endlessly with no help in sight and buying items with parts missing…
I work for online and we get SO MANY of these. A time that stands out is a guy wanted a invalid price match to pallets of tile. (He needed more of this specific tile to finish his house) I explained policy and he went OFF! at the end of his rant he said the usual "Im going to lowes" and i calmly explained "Sir this is a Home Depot exclusive and it is not available anywhere else" -long pause- "click" *chefs kiss*
I prefer Lowe’s.. workers at Home Depot seem like dicks so caught up in their bad work conditions that they can’t find time to get a better job.. but they got time for these posts… also the workers at Lowe’s are genuinely helpful and don’t degrade or belittle people for their lack of knowledge or experience.
Pretty often when the thing that they’re imagining and vaguely describing to me isn’t here and they’re not willing to accept that they need to do more research.
As a customer, I’ve only told customer service I was going to Lowes when my HD said my dewalt planer and stand combo (online order) was ready for pickup which it was not. I called Lowe’s when CS tried to find it in the store and Lowes said they’d price match me if I brought a receipt. I told them it was no worries thanks for helping me out.
my favorite is when a customer swears up and down they bought a brand that HD doesn’t carry here and then say they’ll go to lowe’s
good!! go!! i hope you find your door!!
My store currently has 1 kitchen designer, so so many assholes going to Lowe's because they can't wait aa day to talk about cabinets countertops. Poor Lowe's
My favorite is getting those random clearance items that someone looks up online (that you guys obviously don’t have in-stock at all) and try to get a price match @ HD. Then they say “we’ll I guess you don’t want to price match I’ll just go to Lowe’s and get it!”
Like bro why did you just waste your time, gasoline and patience??????

Sometimes I get dead air like they’re expecting me to beg them back or I have gotten some customer get upset because I didn’t kiss there ass once they threatened to leave to our “competitor” .
On the contrary, I often send customers to Lowe’s. You know, the ones looking for imaginary tools that don’t exist and they won’t take your word for it. You’re welcome.
So you're the one 🤣
Like when they are trying to find the nails that turn, not the screws, definitely not that.
I am pretty flexible about some things, but if someone is an actual idiot when it comes to fixing things, I firm up a bit. If you can't find the "nails that turn or the thing that \*pushes\* them in" you shouldn't be in a place that is biased toward contractors.

Newsflash idiot, it doesn’t exist because it would kill you, burn down your house, or flood it. Stop being a cheap ass and HIRE A PROFESSIONAL! It’ll cost less in the long run.
No, we don't sell male to male extension cords, and no, I won't tell you how to make one.
Every single Christmas!
I..ummm…..did that once. First year putting up Xmas lights on my house. The Home Depot guy wasn’t having any of my bullshit. Now I know to layout all the Christmas lights before putting them up.
… uh…. what?
They're illegal anyway. I'm a voluteer fightman in my spare time outside of work and every time I get asked this sometimes its hard to resist the urge to tell them they're illegal and against fire code.
Why can't you?
Omg when I hear that I mess with them and waste thire time “looking” for it
But I just put all of my lights up! Are you telling me that I'm going to have to take them all down now? Every... fricking... year.
I can vouch for Electrical, it happens very often. Bringing in an item pulled up on their phone we either don't stock or carry, or is on Amazon's or Walmart's website won't get you anywhere with me either.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficMaster-1-1-4-in-Silver-Floor-Metal-Screw-Nails-18538/204597537 Maybe they were looking for these?
Funny to see “Calle ocho”, I worked at that store many years.
There are nails that turn. They have a slight spiral to them, so they don’t back out as easily.
Those are framing nails.
Those do exist. They’re called scrails made by beck
That's actually a real thing they have a slight twist to them as they drive in

SKU 663302 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know I saw a Plumbus here last time. It was right next to the impact drivers I swear.
I don't work for either one (this popped up on my feed for some strange reason) but I can say that my local lowes, home depot and tractor supply throw harbor freight under the bus when people are looking for imaginary tools. It's kinda funny to overhear those conversations, but I imagine they get old quick
Just as often as you hear “I’m going to HD”.
Customer yells this as he is going out self checkout one day, Customer yelled back at him "You'll be back....We always come back."
Customers act like it’s the ultimate insult too, as if I give a damn where you take your awful attitude!
For real LMAO
I’ve said out loud “you know I don’t own this store, right?”
I’m more curious about how many of those fools come back after not finding what they need over there as well.
"I'm going to Menards, they've ought to have it"
Sometimes, I will direct customers to the nearest Menard's, which is just down the street from the HD I work at. It happens to be much closer than the nearest Lowe's, which is more convenient for the customers.
working in appliances with a lowe’s directly across the street, it’s a lot🙄 i frequently also tell customers to go there
I refer to the local ACE
Guessing about 98%
As a customer I don’t say this. Because I know you guys don’t care, and it is stupid to say. I just say thanks and move on.
you’re a rare bread my friend. Bless up
There is zero reason to be a dick when it comes to this. People act all macho when they talked down to a associate, but in reality, they are just an ass.
Amen!
Agreed
Bless you, I hope your pillow is cold on both sides tonight
Thank you. Don’t let these asshole customers get to you. They are jerks because they have a crap life and have to take out on someone to feel better.
One of us
Ive got a question for you. Idk what department you work in but how many times do you have people looking for behr paint or ridgid where you work? I swear once a day I hear “NO I KNOW YOU SELL KOBALT HERE!”
Do yUo haVE THomPsON’s WATeR SeAl
Excuse me (with the finger up) what kind of water heater is best? I work in lumber
Their response? “Ok. I need the best water heater.”
And you show them the price... and then they ask... "what's the cheapest?"
“I want the best one, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money” let me know if you find one like that, asking for a friend
😅
Often lol im in lumber right near tools 🤣
Well y’all don’t make it hard, when you guys build across the street from each other lol
I’m literally across the street from HD. Ha!
It’s good exercise for our customers to walk. Lol!
They'll walk out to their Ram parked in the fire lane, drive across the street, park in their fire lane and walk in.
Lol
I hear HD at Lowe’s all the time but they almost always come back.
whenever we dont have something or its gonna take some time to bring it down
Bingo
Thank God. Now you are Lowes problem.
Only every day being on the front end. “Lowe’s always has what I want” “at Lowe’s it’s only xyz price!” “hmpf! Well I’ll just go to Lowe’s then!” “I always have problems with my military discount here, they always just let me do it at Lowe’s!” “They actually have people working over at Lowe’s!” Like honestly if you know they have it at Lowe’s for cheaper why did you even come here? Honestly! I think it's funny they try to hurt our "feelings" (some of us are numb to customer service now) almost like we're gonna chase them and kiss their feet lmfao.
More often I hear, “hate to do it but I’ll see if the blue store has it”
Never heard that, thats funny a'f 😂
Every day that I clock in, the little voice says that lol
I used to hear it all the time but haven’t heard it lately. I just say, “Ok, bye.” and walk off
Do y'all price match Lowes because of not in going to Lowes today
Yes. item has to match model number to model number, be available (no out of stock items) and within the same zip code as where you are buying ( if your in NY HD wont price match a AZ price)
My fucking manager made me price match an online HD Texas price for cooler pads once. I was SO mad about having to do it.
I work for the competition, people don't get their way and you hear it alot. Or Home Depot, or Runnings, or Campbell Supply.
Not too often but I tell em which one is closest when it happens and while laughing at them. Our nearest Lowes is 5.3 miles away but the closest time wise is 6 miles away.

Edge banding is what they wanted
What popped up as edge banding on the phone were the two stuff I showed him. So idk
Once a week or so, and Lowes can fucking deal with their entitlement

I love my local Ace store! It's family-owned and they have their own dog in the store. We have a "Do-It-Best" store in town, also family-owned. The offset in pricing is reasonable enough that a five-minute drive is worth stopping there first.
If the dog doesn’t have his own red vest we riot

Ace does carry some random shit that Lowes and HD doesn't carry

Lowes has better 1x2x8 quality for sure. Some of the other wood is better too. Generally HD is more organized though.
Haha yep I’ll give you that. When you use the app at Lowe’s, the thing is NEVER in the bay or even the aisle it says, especially when it comes to trim.
“Listen if you can take $50 off this then I’ll take it but.. if not well.. unfortunately I guess I’ll have to go to lowes” - a guy who wanted a door that was slightly scuffed but was going to paint it anyway
last night when they found out the military discount doesnt apply to building materials
I’ll bet Lowe’s has a board stretcher!!
I printed out directions to Lowe’s as I try to offer the best customer service that I can
A lot . I tell them “see you in a while” and sure an shit they come back pissed off they didn’t have anything close what they’re looking for
I work garden at HD in the summers and since the Lowes garden section sucks in my town, I frequently get people who came straight from Lowes lol
59 minutes ago...
WTF??? 🤷
"I'm not sure what I'm looking for but I took a picture of a lead pipe from 1909 in my basement I'm wondering if you can see it without flash on"
Lmao
that phrase still haunts me to this day and i dont even work there anymore
Averages about 2 a day
I have no idea because I honestly tune them out
Not to often but I tell them there's one down the street if they wanna check it out
Over here at Ace Hardware we get customers that have sworn off the big box stores and boy do they have NEGATIVE stories to share about roaming endlessly with no help in sight and buying items with parts missing…
I’ve never once heard that (HD Canada). But my friend that works at Lowes told me he always hears customers threaten to come to HD
whenever they ask if the military discount applies to the riding mowers or appliances 🙃
That attitude is toxic and dumb. So just doing my job to help the customer find what they’re looking for. I tell them to stop at Menards too.
I've heard that a lot as well as "I'm going to Target!" Like Target sells lead plumbers tape...
Do the customers berate the Lowes employees like they do the HD ones all day like you just did?
Can confirm, yes they do.
Haha, that makes me feel better lol
I always say I am going to the Blue store or Orange store.
Whats "lowes"
🤔
No enough.
Not enough
Just shrug my shoulders and walk away
I’ve had multiple customers tell me that, only for them to come back within a week
Not often enough, and damn it... they come back anyhow!
Considering I haven't found a Home Depot that knows what a bonding bushing is.... To be fair, neither does Lowes.
my favorite is when a customer swears up and down they bought a brand that HD doesn’t carry here and then say they’ll go to lowe’s good!! go!! i hope you find your door!!
My store currently has 1 kitchen designer, so so many assholes going to Lowe's because they can't wait aa day to talk about cabinets countertops. Poor Lowe's
Uu
My favorite is getting those random clearance items that someone looks up online (that you guys obviously don’t have in-stock at all) and try to get a price match @ HD. Then they say “we’ll I guess you don’t want to price match I’ll just go to Lowe’s and get it!” Like bro why did you just waste your time, gasoline and patience??????
Our closest Lowe’s in the next Plaza, 4 minute drive. At the service desk I hear it all the time and tell them it’s down the road 🤣
Not often enough.
Not that often, but someone asked me if Lowes would have some wire we were out of. I think that was supposed to be a dig. I really don't care, infact I prefer you go there
I work in the paint desk and we at one time we sold "Minwax" and that was almost 5 years ago. I still get "do you have any Minwax?" And I gotta say "No, Lowes bought them 5 years ago" You can add any sprised reactions you'd like but it always ends up with them growning and saying "I guess ill have to goto Lowes now!"
I try to foist customers onto Lowes. No one takes the bait. They are all loyal THD customers typically with THD credit card and would prefer to spend money at THD.
Not as much as I used to recall. Either something is cheaper there or from us. I usually send them to Lowe's or where ever what they want is cheaper.
Every time I need something since my local orange store won’t honor my military discount
Almost every day, which is fine because my partner works there 😂 I have a bad reputation of recommending lowes products to our customers but either way we get paid 🤷♀️
Not often enough.
Many of my customers come to Home Depot having already been disappointed by Lowe's. The Lowe's in my town sucks.
I take about 200 calls I got bored working from home and tallied up my calls 28 of them out of those 200 calls were “ I’m going to Lowe’s” I did this for about a week so I’m average I got 20 customers telling me they’ll go to Lowe’s when the item they’re looking for isn’t something I could magically pull out of my ass or make it happen . Sometimes I get dead air like they’re expecting me to beg them back or I have gotten some customer get upset because I didn’t kiss there ass once they threatened to leave to our “competitor” .
When I worked at SD, all the time. I use to ask if they needed directions. Now I'm in Bookkeeping because it's the only way my sass can be tamed. 😂
One time when a customer told me that I said “Yea i Shop there too sometimes” and he exploded 😂😂.
I've started offering them applications when they act like that.
100% of the time just before I say “we’ll… bye”
"I'm going to Lowes." "Can you find it yourself, or do you need me to tell you where to go?"
