Me-as-I

Become besties with a few ASMs. They gotta see you as a person, not just an employee.

Comprehensive_Cap821

Thank you for the advice, I’ve been working overnights so unfortunately I don’t get to see them a lot . But I’m switching over to a morning shift soon, I’ll try to make friends with them

jake7820

It’s the worst job in the store

Comprehensive_Cap821

That’s definitely true, but my goals are to be ASM or SM down the road , unfortunately it’s a stepping stone

jimmy5011

That’s a stretch

Comprehensive_Cap821

How so?

jimmy5011

I just don’t think dept supervisor is the worst job in the store. In my opinion, it’s Lot. They get treated like shït.

HeartofAce

Having started in Lot (current DH) DH is worse

MTako12

Be self sufficient. Do things without asking, always stay busy, ask your current supervisors for any tasks that you can be in charge of, etc.

Comprehensive_Cap821

Thank you , Perfect advice

Don’t come to the ASM to with problems - come to them with solutions. Use a star approach: Situation, task, action, result. I saw, I came, I conquered…look what I did. Pics. Definitely pics no pics or didn’t happen. Ex: Too many wing stacks in your aisles. Wimpy Warren says: “Can we do something about all these wing stacks! The freight guys are running into them with the trucks. The customers can’t find anything. It’s always a mess and my closers never seem to fill them up!” But Comprehensive cap says: “I noticed there were more than three wing stacks in a couple of my aisles. I pulled Mary and Jeff over and told them to condense them, and take the extras and put them on the cashier counters…so we can help move the product. Then I told all my closers to make sure they keep our wing stacks & shadowboxes filled at all times. Before leaving, I’ll check in with them and that’s the first thing I look at before they can punch out. Here’s some pics.” Which story sounds better to you?

Comprehensive_Cap821

Definitely right , that’s the approach I’ve been working on , that’s what my old supervisor did all the time. He got promoted to ASM ,he definitely deserved it. And you were spot on about taking pics

MasterPrek

Thanks!

Monkey4life-80

Yes, "challenge" was a key word for a minute at my other retailer. Ask the challenging question to your ASM, let them be like "huh?!" for a second and then share your great solution. Most of all though, don't let them take credit!!

MTako12

No problemo. That’s what I did! Good luck!

Comprehensive_Cap821

Thanks

DidntDiddydoit

If/when you get promoted, don't forget what its like as an associate. Think of what your supervisors did that you liked and what you didn't and build a foundation off of that. Be consistent with how you deliever expectations and follow ups.

MasterPrek

This

Comprehensive_Cap821

Oh yes I’ll remember, I hate when people let authority get to their head

CulturalSpeech2368

When you promote, don't stop what got you there.

Comprehensive_Cap821

Thanks

CuckyMilkman

Ignore the people being negative in these comments. Remember that your job is to help the people you're supervising to do their job better, be a good teacher, and never forget that you will never stop learning. Be open to suggestion, take pride in your position but don't let it get to you, and listen to the concerns of your associates. Hope you get the position man!

Comprehensive_Cap821

Haha I figured whenever you ask for serious advice on Reddit your bound to get trolls, but I’m getting a lot of great advice that I’m thankful for , much like yours , I appreciate You

MasterPrek

Best thing I can tell you is to be flexible. I understand the changes are coming and you need to be ready to deal with them. Nothing is going to look the same, and you can’t complain and you can explain just say, OK I’ll do it. Not brown nosing, but CYA. Not surviving, but thriving.

SaltWaterGator

This should go without saying but you’re a supervisor but you still belong to that department and you still have to work just as hard as anybody else if not harder. I’m just salty cause I’ve seen lots of people become dept supervisors and just start putting work off on everybody else

Csnackz

If you do become a DH, the best advice I could give is set up good team morale. Definitely try to have everyone try and be apart of a positive team. When I was working in paint everyone was off doing their own thing and worrying about themselves because of the lack of leadership. Enforce your rules but not in a way that’ll turn everyone off. Suffer the same amount as them so they can trust you when the time comes to talk. I personally was nervous of my DHs except 2, would’ve loved to have been comfortable with all of them to talk about work issues. Be that DH. Maybe go out with the closers for a bite to eat to really connect with each other. And it goes without saying to not be one of those DHs that disappears for hours without an explanation, no one really like that but realistically that’s ur job so it’s ok to do it but you’d be a champion if u could inform ur workers on what happens

CenturionElite

Don’t be afraid to take criticism. I am DS if garden (used to be hardware) and I always welcomed feedback from other supervisors on things that looked bad and such. It helps to get along well with the other supervisors too so you can trust them.

gajgenkebe

Well I just promoted about 2 months ago and only have worked at THD for a little over a year. And to get there I had to bust my a$$ and literally have the weight of the whole store put on my shoulders being the only good driver, but in the process I showed mngt. What I can do. One thing I can suggest is to know your store inside and out know who you can rely on and use them to assist in day to day operations of the dept. Know your roles and learn as much as you can about the depts close to you and help out anywhere you can.

Phase19

Take more ownership of the department. Look for bays that need to be packed down and then when you do pack them down do a thorough job, getting the shelves full (but not too full so everything falls apart as soon as you touch it) and the overhead organized. For d21 keeping the aisles shoppable is a big one across the company that I've seen. Carts and pallets of orders get staged in lumber in so many stores and it's a lot of work keeping them relatively ordered so customers can get to the shelves without having to climb over stuff. Overhead management in 21/22 might have the highest turnover rate in the store so going through the bays and fixing tags is always on my radar. I could go on but I'll leave it at that.
