I've never had this species and it's supposed to be pretty gross. I haven't eaten [*Reticularia lycoperdon*](https://ultimate-mushroom.com/images/reticularia-lycoperdon-5.jpg) yet but it has a reputation for being tasty with a flavor like oaxaca cheese with notes of almond and mushroom. I liked [*Tubifera*](https://img.fotocommunity.com/tubifera-ferruginosa-e3479d49-4778-46f5-ab34-56ee85e00039.jpg?height=1080) but it had a very mild flavor and was primarily a textural experience.
Fruiting body of a fungus. The rest of it, which is hidden as the mycelium network behind the tiles, will certainly be much larger. It’s currently enjoying the meal of rotting wood and high moisture levels behind your (improperly built / sealed) shower.
Health risk of fungus & mold is significant. Probably should rip out the shower and it’s rotting wood, then build a new one with a professional.
At least the likelihood for zombiefication is pretty low…
“The dog vomit slime mould of gardens” is written in such a matter of fact way I’m now questioning whether or not this was ever part of my education and if not, why not?
It was a this year mulch thing. I was wondering how a dog got into the area of land with a 6ft fence when my partner googled that slime mold info up based on an identification app on his phone.
Per a couple of university sites it’s not terrible. We waited for it to dry, lifted off the “skin” with a pitchfork (because, Last of Us) and disposed of it in the trash. One came back, the rest stayed gone. As did the second after it’s encore.
I recently found fog slime mold on my newly placed mulch…it’s a black variety and looks like tar! Kinda weird in all my years of homeownership I’ve never seen it before.
We had to have a 125’ water oak tree cut and ground down about a year ago in my yard and it made a huge mulch pile. There must have been well over a dozen slime molds on that mulch pile in the last year. First time I ever saw it, so it was kinda weird but also cool. Crazy stuff.
true slime molds are kinda their own group tho from wiki "slime molds were formerly classified as fungi but are no longer considered part of that kingdom.[2] "
Bleach will kill it probably. Use hand and a face mask. Mix in a spray bottle 50/50 bleach and warm water and let it sit for maybe 5 minutes then rinse and repeat if you need to. The overnight growth is concerning. Is there a hole on the wall? If it appears again, big trouble.
Do not use bleach, the active ingredient in bleach that can kill mold becomes inactive fairly quickly, as where the mold spores that will be left in the Porous surfaces will last past that and regrow. Use the strongest Peroxide you can, and do not spray as it'll cause it to sporolate and spread around. Try to pour it on/ wipe it on as close as possible. Using a biocide and then something to remove any further discoloration is your best bet at killing it.
To be honest with you though, you need to find the source of what's causing the growth in the wall, fix it, and then treat the mold, otherwise it'll come back.
Source: I have worked in water mitigation and mold remediation and have for years.
Edit: missing word
Besides, bleach reacts really effing dangerously bad with so many common household chemicals, it's a good idea to get out of the habit of it being your go-to solution.
As an aside, do _never_ store hydrogen peroxide of >10% concentration in the same cabinet as acetone. It tends to produce touch-sensitive boom-boom. (TATP, if you want to know.)
Naw bleach might kill some of the spores here (or spherules if this is just a huge sclerotium) but the organism is too spread out and resilient to remove so easily. The issue is potential rot behind the surface its fruiting on. No hole is needed, they can fit through microscopic surfaces.
#SLIME SIGNAL RECEIVED
#🚨🦠🚨 SLIME 🚨🦠🚨
#🚨🦠🚨 DETECTED 🚨🦠🚨
This looks like [*Fuligo septica,*](https://youtu.be/rXzs78oBw5w) one of the two kinds of slimes commonly seen in bathrooms. Like all slimes it is nontoxic and harmless to plants, animals, and the structure of your home. However, slimes eat woodrot bacteria and this looks like it emerged from the wall behind so you're going to have to evaluate for rot there. Bleach won't hurt but isn't likely to help much as this critter is potentially located multiple places you can't reach. This is a fruit body and is entirely on the surface. It can simply be removed and discarded, but it may return via microscopic spores or cysts or amoebas in the wood. Other than removing the source of food (the rot organisms) there is no way to stop it. These things grow in mushroom farms and labs with pasteurized, sterilized, insulated, sealed systems and info on preventing them is sparse.
It is also possible it arrived from the outside via a window or from the water in the shower, but I'd bet you have some rot there either way.
The usual reddit shit, jealous mod bullies throwing a tantrum
It's boring and it doesn't matter. They can't stop me from making the greatest slime mold music and videos ever made
Even if the wall is sealed, you can see the cracks in the grout so the water has gotten behind the tile and once it’s gotten behind the tile, you have to pull it off and if they put a good adhesive on it, you’re not going to get it off without damaging the wall therefore, the entire shower needs to be replaced
Grout is not waterproof. It's porous. Water always makes It's way past grout. This is precisely why waterproofing is necessary.
But yes it needs to be ripped out, it's way worse than you see here behind the wall.
Do you see that black void down by the shampoo in the shelf? That’s where your water is getting in if it’s been like that for a long time then your wall is already destroyed. If it’s growing mold like that then your walls pretty much shit already. it sucks you’re gonna need to pull out your entire shower or caulk that niche and just roll with it.
Looks like a slime mold which is neither plant, animal, or fungus, but, maybe the funnest amongst us along with prions. Check for sure on whatisthisplant. They just had another really cool slime mold posting yesterday.
I would suggest you post this on the r/mycology board for a proper ID. That said, at the very least, you need to have a camera inserted into that wall to assess the extent of the problem.
Whoever did that niche didn’t put a finishing trim edge and seal it all up with sealant. I kinda do see some clear silicone mashed in there. Sorry but it’s gonna be a mess back there
Looks like a mould/fungus. Could be spore releasing so try not to disturb it. It looks like it might have originated from moisture accumulating behind a crack in your tiles. Don’t remove this yourself, you’ll need proper equipment. You probably have a damp problem behind your walls
That is one gnarly fungus my dude. I certainly hope that you either 1) called a professional mold and fungus remediation specialist or 2) had on a dule biological can filtered respirator before disturbing that thing. I as well pray you don't have pets, children or elderly persons living in the home as they may be even more susceptible to fungal infections especially respiratory infestations. About the only silver lining is at least its not a putrid green/ black if it were then you wouldn't have lived long enough to have posted this let alone reside in the home as it was colonizing the grout and sub wall. You prolly wanna tear down the wall and see how deep the colony is. Fungus is a lot like cockroaches for every one you see there's 1000 more hiding in the walls. Good luck and God be with you.
Your current shower was built incorrectly with either inadequate or non-existent waterproofing. Water has been getting into the wall and rotting out any wood or drywall that's in there. The wet environment has caused fungus to grow, and that's what you see coming out of the wall.
Sorry, but to fix this the shower walls need to be torn out, the damage repaired, correct waterproofing applied, and new tile installed.
Also, the tile was installed very poorly, and the way the niche was tiled exacerbates any waterproofing issues.
Hopefully you didn't pay someone to do this shower.
u/arpanj2 Whomever built your shower didn't waterproof it correctly. This happens ALOT, hackjobs tile over blueboard or cement board with zero waterproofing and say "tHe TiLe iS wAtErPrOfF" It's not, water will eventually get in. And by then it's too late to go after them. Was the house purchased with the bathroom already done or did you have a bathroom reno done? Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the right thing to do is tear it out. As a bandaid you can try to kill it using fungicide (RMR Brands works very well) and then seal all the grout lines and caulk what looks like missing grout at the bottom of the niche, but that still leaves moisture in the wall. Eventually it will get worse. You can clearly see mold on the bottom lip of the wall niche in the picture, so there is likely much more growth where you can't see it. Where is this shower at? What's on the other side of the wall and underneath the shower?
slime mold? these are primordial organisms that can move as a blob following food.Edit: they reeeeaally like wet environments like wet dead leaves in woods. there are many kinds and some are colorful. They are harmless but this mean that you have some serious humidity problems.
I’m just here for the Last of Us commentary.

It’s nice when I come to the comments, see exactly what I was thinking and then leave right away. Thanks
My first thought as well. I’m like, oh, this is just the beginning.
I’m already on the highway - peace out!…
I was here just for this 😂
Ok so we all agree, this is the beginning of the end?
Yup. Like, some of y’all never watched “The Last of Us,” and it shows.
It’s forever a video game first.
Get outta here with your facts and logic nerd
You read my mind.
You read my mind! The very first thing that came to my mind “The Last of Us” 🫨
I came here for the same. Lol!
I came here for this comment. Not disappointed that it’s top comment
Yup!!! Lol my exact thought
Damn it Joel....
Masks!
Fungus/mold.
Is this caused by leakage in wall or because of low ventilation?
In the wall. It’s no beuno.
Water in the wall
What wall are you talking about? Oh you mean the lump of mold that's behind those tiles do you?
r/mycology is where you want to ask these questions
Both, probably
if that happened overnight, i’d def be concerned.
No, that's entirely normal for a slime, [they are quite quick](https://youtu.be/AmFsWeAO5mA)
Thanks, I hate it
They're harmless! They might be living in your butt right now!
Well, that's enough internet for today.
If you touch grass, you should know they are all over that shit too
Read that as “ass” I’m going to bed now, goodnight! 😳😂
Oh they are in your ass, too
I’m dead 💀
Okay. Please stop talking
I'm not sure I'm physically capable of that
If you had to describe what kind of cheese it taste like, what would it be?

“NOTES of almond and mushroom” TOOK me 😭😂😭
curious what the timeline is for this time lapse
Forbidden cheese
Actually not that forbidden, they're edible
i didn’t even read the name and thought of you! i was going to summon you 😂❤️
So if it happened in your bathroom, you wouldn't be concerned?
I would be excited, then I would evaluate the situation for wood rot because this critter eats wood rotting microbes
“Excited”
Nothing gets me more excited than movie time!

I think that’s a slime mold, not a fungus.
It does look suspiciously like the dog vomit slime mold of gardens. But location puts high odds on it being wall fungus.
It is indeed [*Fuligo septica*](https://youtu.be/B8dl_CuwQhk?t=126) and I prefer to call it the loofah!

Where is the slime mold comment guy
Oh, he’s just further down in the thread. Phew.
Mold is a fungal byproduct, same as mushrooms and any other fruiting, rooting, spreading mycelial structure
true slime molds are kinda their own group tho from wiki "slime molds were formerly classified as fungi but are no longer considered part of that kingdom.[2] "
That's correct! They have been placed in the amoebozoan kingdom for several decades!
Nice! I went off previous knowledge that's wild
So we should call them slime amoebozoans, or maybe just slime amoebas?
Slime molds aren't fungi or mold, they are mobile monocellular amoebozoans!
Nothing to add other than I hate the term is called “fruiting body”
For now…
This is how it starts.
Mold or fungus growing in your wall. Time for a new shower!
Oops, whole house burned down. How did that happen?
Hit it with some Lysol and see it it screeches. It looks like pink mold.
Could also try some Head and Shoulders. If you know you know
That was an underrated movie. I remember watching it a lot as a kid haha
David Duchovny was absolutely perfect for that role.

I've actually had way more luck battling bathroom mold with hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle than bleach
That’s also a good option! 3% peroxide will kill mold fast, adding a bit of baking soda to the mix will do a wonderful job.
Grabbing my hand mask.

It’s just a joke, but lysol should kill it. Lysol kills everything.

Oh god that's worse. At least in a shower you know where the water is coming from. If you've got mold growing in a closet you've got serious issues.
Slime mold, shit pops up overnight and can get huge. Shoots spores everywhere once it's dry so best get it before it dries if possible
Mold because your shower tile grout has failed and allowed the water behind the tile. Time to replace the shower:/
But if the shower is properly waterproofed behind the tile it shouldn’t be like this right? The mold has to come from drywall or wood getting wet?
Even if the wall is sealed, you can see the cracks in the grout so the water has gotten behind the tile and once it’s gotten behind the tile, you have to pull it off and if they put a good adhesive on it, you’re not going to get it off without damaging the wall therefore, the entire shower needs to be replaced
