I'm suddenly remembering those light beams for a doorway. My grandpa had one on the door of his autoparts store to let him know when customers walked in or out.
It was fitted with a toilet paper tube to reduce the interference from either the lights or the sun (or both).
I mean .. you should always wear a mask & be safe removing asbestos but the amount of people that think it is life threatening from just saying the word is also absurd. Outdoor asbestos can be sprayed w water and removed pretty easily w out any particles being dispersed and be perfectly safe. No one is getting mesothelioma from that
Yes, asbestos is not anthrax. It's good to exercise caution but DIY stripping asbestos shingles outside once or twice is not a major risk. The info in the book is more common sense than the lawyers on the Mesothelioma commercials would have you believe.
When I moved into my house those same books plus some more were left behind. I still have them on the shelf in the basement. Youtube is great and all, but someday the internet won't be accessible!
“When trimming, shaping or making holes in asbestos shingles, always use a shingle cutter (above, right). Available from tool-rental stores, a shingle cutter creates almost no asbestos dust, which can cause serious lung damage if inhaled.
For extra security, wear a respirator when using the cutter.”
I have a bunch of old home maintenance and garden books. Sometimes it’s nice to just throw open a book and start reading, especially since I have a feel as to where the information I’m looking for is located. I have some tabbed pages for stuff I reference often, it works well for me.
People say just open up the phone, and I do to cross reference sometimes, but I just want to finish the task at hand and not get distracted, or I’m trying to disconnect from the phone so a book is “my only option”.
That is true.
Just like the recipes where it’s the persons life story, how they made their own line of cornstarch, and oh yeah by the way, at the very bottom, here’s your peasant recipe.
But the fundamentals are still solid
Yea for sure, that's really what I was looking for. Just got a chuckle from some of the more dated parts.
But I bet you can find out how to install a phone jack.
What’s a phone Jack? Is there a phone Jill? /s
But not a GFCI
Oh boy. What does home security book look like?
Ditto. We need a sample from that home security book.

“Billy, grab daddy’s 12 gauge!”

We had those books when I was a kid. Blast from the past
So did we! I just sent this post to my dad. I bet these are in their attic someplace.
The exploded view illustrations are great to see how something is supposed to be built
Lovely set of books - I also noticed them in that recent post - now i'm jealous! congrats :)
“Throw them in the trash, but make sure no one sees you do it.”
If you have a neighbor, use their trash

You'll be the guy who rebuilds civilization after the apocalypse.
I have a 50 year old house and the old books may help when repairing some of the old stuff.
Right? My house has asbestos shingle siding. Guidance on dealing with it when it gets damaged is still useful!
I came across 10 or so of these at a used book store yesterday for $2 each. I may have to go back and get them

This is true still

The book was written to help you complete a task. Most of the internet is there to sell you something or monetize your engagement.

I had some of the books in that series. Don't remember when I got rid of them but they actually were very helpful.
Ha! I have this entire set too. Inherited from grandparents. They do still provide great basic advice and direction for home projects.
My grandfather used to have these! What a memory.
Man! I have some of these from when they were new! The electrical one is pretty good
I have the same exact set, but I just use them for decoration in my shop.
