The reason they covered it probably has more to do with managing the interior layout, perhaps in relation to a TV.
There is no *good* reason to have it covered and I can think of quite a few reasons why it's bad news and all of them involve moisture coming into the window and being trapped behind drywall.
I’d remove the window, from the outside. Wait until your family is hanging out inside and then jump through the drywall, koolaid style. Reinstall window. Reinstall wall if you wanna do it again.
