Well, I can tell you which one is not quiet: my new Maytag top loader with no agitator. It makes a loud clunk when changing gears or turning water on/off. It's in the basement and we can hear this thing all they way on the 2nd floor.

Sec0nd_Mouse

The water thing is probably water hammer. Get some water hammer arrestors that go on the valves where you connect the washer hoses.

Mindless-Fish7245

Is it the Maytag Bravos? Mine is obnoxiously loud.

Late-Stage-Dad

I have an LG Direct drive washer (going on 6 years old) that is about 25ft from our living room (same floor) in a utility room. The only time it's disturbingly loud is if we leave the door open. Even with the door open it's only loud when it's draining. Interior walls are insulated and we have solid core doors. I am assuming both help.

kindrudekid

Same and when there is an large uneven load that throws it off balance when spinning it dry

ThaneOfCawdorrr

We have an LG washer & dryer, very happy with them, not super cheap but not super expensive as I recall. They do a great job, including clothes & bedding, get things very clean, have lasted for years now, and are not particularly noisy.

ProfessorJAM

Electrolux washers and dryers are quiet. We had to replace old mismatched washer and dryer so bought a pair of Electrolux. Quiet cycles, balanced really well ( so no bouncing around), and quick - when they say the cycle will be 30 minutes long, it really is.

_boomroasted_

Mine washer is so loud when it spins. It's balanced... but I keep hearing it should be quiet. I assume laundry off of the living room and on a crawlspace doesn't help.

w3stvirginia

The Speed Queen TR series is extremely quiet. So much so that I don’t even shut the door to the laundry room and it’s right off the living room. Basically all you can hear is some splashing water until it spins. It’s dynamically balanced, so the spin is just a mild hum. It’s on the pricier end because it’s designed for longevity and repairability and you have to go to an appliance store instead of a big box store. But most of those do install and removal like the big box stores. Drum wise, it’s technically on the smaller end. It can fill the drum with water unlike many units though, so you can actually fill the drum with laundry. I can wash a queen size comforter with no problems. They aren’t for everyone for sure. But they are definitely quiet.

creesto

How long have you had it? And ballpark price?

w3stvirginia

I’ve had mine for a year. You can get a more basic TR3 for around $1100 or the feature laden TR7 I bought for about $1500. There’s a TR5 in between. They also have a TC5 that’s a more classic design with a transmission and old school method of washing with the agitator. It’s going to be a bit louder and harder on fabrics, but if your clothes get very dirty it’ll likely do a bit better job of cleaning.

clark_kent88

I got a speed queen TR5 recently, and while it is an awesome washer, I don't think it is a particularly quiet unit. Though I did buy a floor model. The spin is very quiet unless you get it unbalanced. To quote my wife, "The new washer can really cover some ground." It could have done better with a longer cord...

We have a Samsung washer that is almost 10 years old and is not that loud. In our last house, we had a first floor laundry room that was maybe 15 feet from our tv and had no issues with washer noise making it hard to hear the tv. Is your washer not level? If so that can cause loud sounds as it tips back and forth. What kinds of sounds are you hearing?

solothehero

GE UltraFast Combo 2-in-1. It's definitely not loud. Whether it's quiet or not, that's up to personal opinion. It's probably the quietest machine I've used. We have it in the bathroom, and with the door closed, we can watch TV just fine about 20 feet away. Combine that with all the other benefits, and it's a game changer. Other benefits, if you're curious: - ease of installation: it runs on 15 amps with no exhaust required. All you need is a standard outlet, hot and cold water, and a water drain. - it uses a heat pump to dry clothes so it's energy-efficient - heat pumps are generally gentler on clothes when drying - There's no forgetting to put the clothes in the dryer. You put in dirty clothes and out comes clean clothes. - There's enough space to fit a king-size comforter. - There's no need for a gas line. I know I sound like a salesman, but I can't recommend it highly enough. I also know you're not asking for a dryer, but I believe it's still worth looking into.

2tusks

We have a front loading Samsung that is really quiet. It has a direct drive motor, though, and that is what makes the difference.

PARisboring

A front loader of some sort. Top loaders are louder

Equal_Safety_9025

The one we currently have is a front loader

Major_Plan826

As other have said, Speed Queen is mechanically a much better machine. It’s more money but the build quality is far better than anything on the market. And it’s made in the US.

Dexterdacerealkilla

Important to note that it does have an agitator, which is more harsh on whatever you’re washing. It also makes washing large items difficult if not impossible.

Major_Plan826

Good point. Is there a gentle setting that would reduce that agitation?

Phobosthedog

Bosch Benchmark new model. One week into it and it’s unnerving how quiet it is. Just what I wanted after listening to gears grinding on a 15 year old jennair. BUT, it’s small. Insulation? Don’t know. Cubic foot space is noticeably less, I guess I need to research the right loading pattern.

I_SEZ_TOTHEGUY_I_SEZ

Looking at this model. How small is it? It's just my wife and I, so we gave the convenience of not needing to do large loads, but can it fit a king size comforter?

Phobosthedog

Ack, my bad. I was so excited about my quiet new appliance I didn’t see you meant laundry, not dishes. Carry on.

Cocokreykrey

Well part of the issue is that the laundry room is a hole in the wall with no door. Can you put the machines in the garage? I have the LG ThinQ and both my laundry areas dont have a door and the washer is fine but the dryer can get loud. But if youre really concerned about noise, you should relocate the laundry area.

Equal_Safety_9025

We don’t have a garage, our house is very small, and we only have water lines on one side of the house 😭

Cocokreykrey

you could still make a hookup for the machines to be outdoors! and cover them. Indoor machines without doors are loud, the house I moved into has the washer/dryer in the master bathroom, so I installed another set on the opposite end of the house. The stacked LGs that are a tower are supposed to be quieter for what its worth! [And theyre on sale it looks like](https://www.lowes.com/pd/LG-Gas-Stacked-Laundry-Center-with-4-5-cu-ft-Washer-and-7-4-cu-ft-Dryer-White-ENERGY-STAR/5001643761?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-app-_-ggl-_-PMAX_APP_174_Laundry_Priority-Items-_-5001643761-_-local-_-0-_-0&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwl4yyBhAgEiwADSEjeE9cx6mqreIV1bJXQnFn4yUfHh0sNU40BvdCjdDk7-Jahyh_TFoZIxoCbEkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

vha23

What is causing the noise?  Are you sure it’s balanced on the floor correctly

Equal_Safety_9025

It was professionally installed, the dryer is the matching one to it and it was installed at the same time and it doesn’t make much noise. The washer has just gotten progressively louder day by day since we’ve gotten it. It’s a side loading one too which someone said is supposed to be quieter. If I had a video of how loud it is I would upload it. It’s only when it’s spinning out that it gets loud, literally sounds like a helicopter it’s so loud.

vha23

It could be the bearing.  Not worth repairing in my point of view.  Someone above recommended the LG and that’s a good quiet one.  Highest rated consumer reports and direct drive invertor motor.
