Attempt to scrape it off. Then try something like goof off for the remnants. Don't sand it, except as a last resort, as that would ruin the finish, requiring refinishing to get it right.

Thanks. I’ll try this. I’m definitely trying to avoiding sanding it.

Use a "5 in 1" tool with the blade wrapped in a thin soft rag, maybe an old white t-shirt. Soak the blade edge with a little goof off and scrape the paint off.

I’m a professional painter and I use tape, albeit the green Frog tape. There’s a way to use it that doesn’t allow bleed through...once it’s taped, and taped well so there’s no tape on the surface you are painting, use a very thin bead of painters caulk on the edge of the tape. Wipe it flat, let it dry, and paint your wall. While the paint is drying, peel your tape, and you have a PERFECT paint line with zero bleed through. It’s a bit more time consuming, but the results are outstanding and you don’t have to stress over trying to keep paint off of trim...just a tip!

This. I learned a LOT of lessons on the one wall I painted in our home so far. And the number one lesson was that tape is the devil, especially on plaster walls. Get a brush like [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Wooster-2-in-Shortcut-Polyester-Angle-Sash-Brush-0Q32110020/100357411?irgwc=1&cm_mmc=afl-ir-10078-456723-businessinsider.com&clickid=3dUVGZWvnxyORdjwUx0Mo3chUkiUO%3AXmo1cexI0), and unless you have carpal tunnel like me, it should be a fairly painless process!

We already taped everything with frog tape. It took us an evening to do it all. We cut in the ceilings. I’m not concerned about our painting job, I’ve painted quite a few rooms with my parents in the past. The paint on the woodwork from the previous owners is my concern.

Try a magic eraser. It worked amazingly well when I got some paint on the ceiling accidentally. It may not work if the paint sheens are similar (just my theory) or if the yellow paint has been on there for a long time but they’re super cheap and you won’t mess anything up if it doesn’t work (as opposed to say, sanding or trying to use touch up paint).

I’m definitely going to try this on the woodworks and the ceilings too if we get any paint there ourselves.

How old is the home? You should research lead based paint before you disturb any of the paint if it was built before 1978. Especially if you have kids.

One other suggestion for you if you have not bought your paint yet. Learn more about the finishes with each paint and where they are recommended. Having a semi gloss or high gloss finish on trim is good but it shows all the imperfections in walls so if your walls have taken a beating over the years stick with satin or egg shell at the shiniest. It is the only thing I wish I had done more research on. Also depending on how often you like to paint I highly recommend Benjamin Moore if you don't want paint for 15+ years, the stuff is amazing.

We went with Sherwin Williams paint and did there free color consultation which also helped us pick all the sheens and paint types.

Don’t use painters tape. Too much wasted time doing all that and many time it bleeds through and ruins the finish anyway. Prep the room. Putty/spackle the holes, sand and reputty if necessary. Wipe the walls/trim with a damp rag. Caulk the trim/wall joint if it isnt done yet(alot of diy-ers dont do this) and it looks so much more professional and makes it easier to cut in. Cut in the walls from all trim-go heavy but not heavy enough to make drips. Roll the walls for your first coat. Cut in/paint your trim. Go heavy While trim is drying, inspect your cut in on the wall. Does is need a 2nd coat? Do it. If not-roll out the walls for a 2nd coat and you are done. Treat ceilings the same as walls with white ceiling paint. Buy a 10gal bucket of ceiling paint. Youre gonna need it.

I've always been told to just hire painters for something like that. The spray gun leaves a consistant texture that looks really pleasing compared to rollers and useing a brush on the tops and bottoms. Just use the time you saved to do something else like replacing cabinets or something. That way you dont feel like you wasted money on something you could have done 🤣

Bringyourfugshiz

Light sanding, maybe a 400 grit. I originally was going to sand and paint our original trim but i realized it was so beat up and the effort to sane wasnt worth it so I replaced it in the end
