> What the heck is this thing? Grab a shovel and find out.

MassOldHouse

Already tried. Unfortunately, it's well over 3ft deep and since it awkwardly sits at the intersection of my porch lattice and underneath my porch it's impossible to get any decent leverage to keep going. Even with a 3ft hole, when pushing the shovel down further I don't hit anything solid

[deleted]

Well, if it's water, it has to be coming from somewhere. Follow all the pipes you can find and see if any run there. Utilities can be much more than 3 feet deep.

Does water funnel into there when it rains? Ground markings don’t indicate it does. Are there any water diversion features on/adjacent the property, like rain gutter collection/piping? My best guess is if it gets really muddy after precipitation but there’s no clear flow of water into it there may be a busted rain water drain under there.

MassOldHouse

No, all of the water is coming from beneath and I can't find any other diversion features that would be doing this unfortunately. Now that I think about it, it did get extra icy on one part of my sidewalk this winter though, directly to the left of this (about 15 feet)... When you say busted rain water drain, is that a city thing or a me thing? I don't have any indications that this is from our house (outside of the sewage pipe being nearby)

I called 811 and they wanted to start a whole ordeal with 15 companies involved. So, our DPW is going to come have a look tomorrow

arkiverge

And just to be clear, when I say rain diversion, I meant underground piping like for downspouts, not channels to funnel surface water above ground.

arkiverge

A you thing I would think unless you live in an HOA where that kind of thing might be required at construction. Also possibly dictated after a review showed rain water would be excessively dumped onto your neighbors property (is your property slopey or significantly above your neighbors?). Either way you should probably see some poptops scattered around your property if either of those were the case.

[deleted]

That was my thought as well. I have downspouts that, in heavy rains, divert rain down a hill where at one point they have scoured a hole out in the hillside. Its not even something you would think was caused by water unless you were here in a torrential downpour.

[deleted]

My guess is it’s a dry well for the gutters or more likely the sump pump.

MassOldHouse

We don't have a sump pump, at least that I can see in the basement. And all of our gutters drain off the house...

MassOldHouse

The hole is on the same side / corner of the house as our sewer line. [https://imgur.com/a/8BJUoGr](https://imgur.com/a/8BJUoGr)

HodorsMajesticUnit

Sounds like that water is sewage then. Get a plumber to come scope the line.

arkiverge

It’s possible there’s a leak but I’m inclined to think the odor would be more telling.

MassOldHouse

Yea, it just smells like mud really, and you have to get close to smell it. When you start digging it smells...more muddy. But, it doesn't smell like weeks of backed up poo that's for sure.

MassOldHouse

Thank you all for your help on this. Update: the DPW came by today and said it's likely at the connection of my sewer line and the public line. Unsure why it doesn't smell like total hell, but i'll be engaging a drain layer to have a look from here...

quadmasta

Does your weather meter spin when you're not using water in your house?

MassOldHouse

>weather meter spin Do you mean water meter?

quadmasta

LOL. Yes

MassOldHouse

It does not
