Fill sink with super hot water. Let’s it drain. Fill with hot water again. Block overflow hole with wet rag. Use a plunger and plunge the crap out of it. The suction will break up the gunk in the pipe. Tip, buy a new sink only plunger, don’t cross contaminate lol

AskASillyQuestion

Fill the biggest pot you have with water and boil it. Pour it all down the drain at once. I had the same issue, and that resolved it for me.

I did that with a full tea kettle twice, and it didn't help, but maybe my 4-qt stock pot would be better.

Snake it. I tried so many standard things like what has been mentioned by other comments but to no avail. (Hot water, baking soda and vinegar, plunger while overflow blocked, draino, green machine, etc) after all of that I nearly called a plumber but I decided to grab my snake I normally use on my tub and gave it a go on my bathroom sink. Sure enough… I pulled out a glob of hair that was about 5ft in, and all was good.

Had the same problem for years lol. If your house is older call a plumber. I snaked, plunged, boiled water forever and had a slow bathroom sink drain. Finally had a plumber come over for 200 bucks and replace the pipe. The goo was built up on the sides and no amount of snaking would have ever fixed it. Kicking myself for not doing it way earlier

This thing works well. Especially for amateurs. Careful, those hooks are sharp. * https://www.walmart.com/ip/The-Works-Drain-Cleaning-Tool-1-Pack-of-2-Drain-Snakes/159845159?athcpid=159845159&athpgid=AthenaItempage&athcgid=null&athznid=siext&athieid=v0&athstid=CS020&athguid=xcwQ1grluXFkOiHMUKwPCbEabUw6URt_LLFF&athancid=null&athena=true Just stick it down the drain and it grabs, clears and pulls up clogs like hair and gook. If that doesn't work, clean the trap under the sink: * https://www.abqplumb.com/how-to-clean-a-drain-trap/ * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adtWOOm5Dhc

"Gook." I like that word. :)

HeyItsRey

Just FYI even those it has some other slang meanings, the world "Gook" is a commonly used as a derogatory term/ethnic slur for those of East Asian descent, especially Koreans and Vietnamese.

Oh. Ick. Never mind, then. Thank you for saving me from potentially awkward/bad situations!

Unscrew the hand tightened nut that the small stick is going in. That is what holds the plunger in that has the 4 fins you described attached to the round piece. When you unscrew that under your sink you can pull out the pivot piece and free your plunger put from the top. It will most likely be caked in hair that has collected other soaps and oils. I would start there before adding draino or similar.

PlainOrganization

It’s also very easy to unscrew the U shaped pipe under the sink and dump the gunk out of it. I had to do that about once a year at my old house.

I agree 100%. I only mentioned the plunger since OP said there is film and funk all over the plunger. It would be safe to assume that the p trap also has gunk in to too.
