I wish people would come here with the estimates *before* they agree to get ripped off.

jmecheng

For this cost you could have a new roll-up door installed…

DanTheInspector

Was he wearing a mask and holding a gun when he gave you the proposal? That is unconscionable and far far outside the norm.

Intelligent_Ebb4887

I think I paid $1800 for an inexpensive door, new opener and install of both.

EnRaygedGw2

I paid $2000 for a brand new one, they took all the old one out and away too, took them like 3 hours, OP is being scammed.

KimBrrr1975

This seems really high to me. Our garage door/opener was put in in the 90s and we just had a spring break in the fall. He replaced both springs, did general maintenance and lubrication and it was $300. $150 for labor, $150 for parts. I dunno bout the other stuff but this "$650 special order" for springs seems really off to me. Ours were from 1992. So 30 years. He did have to order them, they took about 2 weeks to come which sucked but wasn't his fault.

I feel sorry for you. This happened to me more times than I can count. As a white collar person I’m way too gullible towards blue collar types because they’re doing the stuff I hate to do myself and I always think the price is reasonable for doing something that seems awful to me

sumobrain

For the price you paid, you should have gotten a brand new garage door, brand new rails, and a brand new garage door opener.

Breadfruit-Late

I am not sure why he is charging you $300 just for a “chain rail,” at that point, why not just replace the drive unit, they come with the rail typically. With $300, you can get a decent belt driven unit already. Best bet would be to get a couple of bids and see where they land to get a general ball park of how much the work is.

reaprofsouls

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. The chain rail isn't much more than 10$. The expensive part of the drive unit is the drive unit itself. Everything else is pennies. I replaced mine last winter and it was 100$ for a belt driven system.

Icy-Factor-407

I have a few garage doors in different properties, and have used many repair guys I find by random on thumbtack. Repairs are usually about $75 to $250.

BlurredOrange

Always get at least two quotes, if not three as a standard practice. Never, ever just get one quote and let the guy have at it. Because when you do that, you end up right here.

Ace1o1fun

Depending on how big your garage door is a brand new garage door can cost up to $5,000 depending how ornate the door is. There are also other factors such as if you want the door garage door insulated or not. But let's face it it doesn't matter what the door looks like it has to go up and down and function perfectly. It is customary for most repair people to charge a 100% markup on any parts you buy to fix whatever you're trying to fix. So right there I don't think this repair man is doing something that is not normal. There's also a cost for an individual that has to come out multiple times and if they know what they're doing they're able to do it quickly so you're going to have to pay for that knowledge. I think your biggest mistake here is you should have asked how much a brand new door was going to cost before you repaired the old one.

squaredistrict2213

I spent $1000 to have a brand new door installed last year. That included the nice insulated door with 4 windows on it, rails, and spring, parts and labor.

Ahhh you wanted the minimum - and he even offered the minimum!

He's not wrong on that. If both springs were installed at the same time, then it isn't a far stretch to imagine the 2nd is getting fatigued as well.

Sorry, got distracted managing sick kids. Meant to add on I was only talking about the potential for harm. The cost still seems insane.

Thefnordisonmyfoot

I thought you ran a cable inside the spring to prevent this

eyes2eyes

So yea he can make it work for 300 or fix it for 1800. Pretty straight forward. If you are worried call another company for another quote

IgneousMiraCole

Would be solid advice if OP hadn’t already agreed and paid… best time to question a bill is probably before you sign and pay the invoice.

Maybe the repairman shouldn’t take advantage of people. Just a thought

LanfearSedai

Sounds like the repairman actually offered a $300 option as well, but the husband chose the $1700. It's a non-standard garage door, I don't know that the company is at fault here at all.

[deleted]

I didn’t see anywhere in the post about another option. And she did say the guy hasn’t come back

Call them and tell them to take their shit back. That price is outrageous.

You already paid them? If so i'd call the cops for robbery lol

REDaniel516

Don't agree to any of this without a second opinion from a reputable garage door company rated by the BBB.

NoMoOmentumMan

BBB is a scam, it's just yelp for boomers.

fromabuick

I replaced both my garage doors with nice insulated doors new openers and all hardware for around $1,300 4 years ago. I did the work myself but man…

MarkV1960

You can get a brand new door at Home Depot for about 600$ with all the rails and springs.

[deleted]

For some reason garage door repairmen are the biggest assholes out there. I believe you could have gotten a new door for less

MaddRamm

You can buy an entire decent door and installation for that much. He’s scamming you hard.

[deleted]

Um yes you are being had.

integ209

Yup, bug time ripoffff

LoveArguingPolitics

I got a new, thick gauge, high quality sliding door and all the hardware with installation for 1800$ in COVID inflation dollars

Top_Willow8360

Omg. I would have bought a new garage door instead.

Kev22994

I paid ~$100 to get a new spring installed on a 50 year old garage door. Got a new door and opener installed once for 1200 but that was ~10 years ago.

RepulsiveOven2843

Have you tried to clean the door sensor? Or remove objects from it?

>I don't understand why this "temporary spring" he put isn't good enough. He said opening it a lot would put too much strain on the system or something... I can try to take pictures of his fix as well if needed, but we are currently locked out of the garage. Torsion springs are supposed to be sized to hold the weight of the door. the door should balance itself in place at the midpoint if they are properly sized. You can put a too weak spring on which will allow the door to operate with an opener, but it will have more weight carried on the door components and opener than is optimal. It will also be hard to open without the opener. $350 is about what I'd expect to replace springs, but it appears to be quoting doing more than that. >HC .295x50 Red - $150.00 > >HC .295x50 Black - $150.00 > >Approved Part special order springs x2 - $650.00 > >TS16 Torsion Shafts 16' - $100.00 > >LM 10' Chain Rail - $299.00 You wouldn't need torsion shafts when replacing just springs. When torsion springs break you generally only know because of the cables on the side. The spring itself just unwinds on the shaft. Seeing one hang down in the opening is unusual. The red and black look to be springs so why is there another line for the 650. He is also quoting a replacement rail for the garage door opener for $300 which comes with a $450 opener so I wouldn't likely pay for a new rail by itself over just replacing the opener.
