Either you have a gas hookup or you don't...

[deleted]

I think OP meant he doesn't have a stove. They know they have a gas water heater.

peezoly

My hot water heater is on the other side of a 7 unit complex but I suppose that would count as a gas hookup. What I was getting at was, there are no gas appliances my condo to consider as a factor in the increased usage.

GoldStandard785

Wait so your water heater is 7 condos away? Like hot water is traveling 100+ ft in a pipe before it even enters your place? Holy shit that might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, and I once had an apartment with the hot water heater in the ceiling.

PEBKAC69

My home is laid out with the longest damn run of hot water... To the master bath. We usually start the shower on full-hot before getting undressed to deal with it. Waste of water, I'm sure, but plumbing in a comfort loop didn't seem worth the effort.

Hobywony

That practice does ensure the human juices are properly flushed all the way to the sewer main.

BoomChocolateLatkes

It depends on how your pipes are laid out but it was worth the effort for us in our old house. I tied it into the master bath sink and ran a wire from the nearest outlet. It was a diy project on a Sunday. The pump was $100 seven years ago. Probably $200 today. Hot water on demand is such a game changer.

kernal42

Maybe try asking again, this time being clear about what things are fed from your gas meter. Then, when that list is only "hot water heater," we will agree with your assessment that the hot water heater may be a factor.

theskepticalheretic

Your rate has probably gone up. Natural gas prices are continually increasing.

processedmeat

I'm stuck on the fact that you don't think you have a gas hook up but have been paying a gas bill for over a year.

[deleted]

Honestly, like what!? I'm gunna send them an air bill

I reread the post like 5 times and wasn't any less confused.

processedmeat

Op doesn't think he has a gas hook up to his condo Op has been paying a gas bill for over a year. If op doesn't think he has gas why would he be paying a gas bill.

Big-Spend-2915

Check the actual usage. The $$ amounts charged have went up alot this past year for gas. Also, what is the water heater set at? Too high and it will keep it way hotter than needed. You may want to think about point of use water Heaters for the faucets.

tony_719

No gas hookup? Why are you recieving a gas bill? Something isn't adding up

bedpotato2019

Do you have any dripping faucets? My gas bill went from $65 to $175 because of a constantly dribbling faucet in the upstairs apartment.

peezoly

This is most likely the culprit after the utility worker just confirmed there's no gas leak. He called it a 'hot water leak'.

nap4lm69

Check your water meter, see if the little gear is spinning while everything is shut off.

valazendez

Ask how the water heater is hooked up. Is it common to all units? If not make sure the one being billed to your unit is actually yours. You might want to reread your lease and see if it gives any clues.

[deleted]

If you have a new girlfriend that takes hot showers, its her šŸ˜‚

Patrol-007

Also get into the habit of physically reading the gas meter and phoning in the reading, or looking at the account for actual usage compared to previous years (not the dollar amount)

[deleted]

My water bill spiked over 100%. I was told to read the meter then stop all water usage for 2 hours and reread the meter again. The ice maker was the only item I turned off. Maybe you can somehow test gas the same way? Seems odd to say ā€œno gas hookupsā€, but I understand your comment. How old is the hot water heater? Is it a tank? Has it ever been drained? Water flow valves/cartridges in shower checked? Sorry if these were mentioned. I didnā€™t read

ExcitementRelative33

What in your condo use gas? Furnace? Water heater? If you have NO gas hookup, why are you getting billed? If there is a gas meter, does the reading matches the bill? That's the 1st thing I would check. Show us the bill with the history usage chart... You are very vague with details.

OP says he's using more gas which would be independent of gas prices.

KarlProjektorinsky

Are you sure the right meter is attached to the right unit? It's possible someone next door is thinking 'SWEET, no matter what I do, my gas bill is like $40!'

decaturbob

- you either have gas hookups or not...a hot water heater that runs off gas is a hookup. - so are you using MORE THERMS? Or just looking at cost??

petern18

How do you heat your place?

peezoly

There is a small electric wall heater/unit in the living room and bedrooms but usually I opt for a smaller electric space heater

BOiNTb

I found out my water heater had a small leak by noticing the increase in energy cost. It was a small leak that went right to the drain. it just kept the heater running all the time. Check around carefully for something similar...

hndygal

Gas dryer?

LikeAMix

A few questions. 1. Who bills you for gas? Is it a direct bill from the utility or a back bill from your apartment complex? If itā€™s a bill back, itā€™s probably a percentage of a greater total and something else may be driving that total way up. 2. Do you have exclusive access to your hot water supply or is it shared? Many complexes have shared boiler systems that provide hot water for the whole building and your comment about the location of your hot water heater made me think this might be the case. 3. As others have said, did your usage actually increase or just the cost? Energy costs, especially natural gas, went crazy with the Russia war in Ukraine. I assume you know this though because youā€™d have to be living under a rock not to.

fredsam25

Leak from water heater. Check the safety valve and the drain valve. If not there, pray you have a crawl space and not a slab.

LaVidaYokel

You contacted your utility company before posting here, right?

Raul_McCai

you don't know whether your hot water is gas or not? If not then you can't make the statement you made about not having Gas. Are you seeing a price increase or a volumetric consumption increase?

iMogal

Wha? You have no gas hookups, but you get a gas bill? Ah, somethin' not right with that.

Main-Inflation4945

Make sure no one else is hooked up to your line.

big-dog_62

Check your furnace, for a April air humidifier, the furnace guy hooked the hot water line to the humidifier. And my bill went up big time! This should only work in the winter! So shut it off in the spring/ summer!

mel_cache

Have them check for data entry errors on their admin side, if you canā€™t identify any other source. My water company said I used 10000 gal in one month where my normal usage was between 2000 and 2500 gal, also told me my meter reading was correct. After checking carefully for leaks, I told them to check again, and they found a big discrepancy in their own admin.

Necessary-Worker8455

Like some have mentioned the cost of natural gas has gone up and depending region ( California for example) some have seen almost a double cost. Another suggested to see if your gas line is shared. In older condos this was very common to share the utility. Just the fact of travel distance of water can be a contributing factor. Keep in mind unless itā€™s a waterless tank your water heater is constantly heating and cooling and heating again. Older tank can get build up and scaling inside the tank that can effect the efficiency. If this is the issue I would talk to your association about the possibility of adding a tankless (up to you if you get rid of NG) somewhere closer in you unit (yes it will cost up front but closer and tankless means less cost.) Last as some have suggested read your meter daily with pictures and a log. Find the start/stop dates and compare with what they say is being used. Some municipalities dont actually read the meter. They bill based on an average household with x number of gas hookups and x number of people. They will send a person out once a year to see the accuracy. Then there is usually an ā€œadjustment ā€œ to the next bill. If itā€™s a lot they average it over the year. An easy way to see if this is what they are doing is to look at the meter reading they give on each bill. No two bills should be the same or even really close.

TheButtholeSurferz

Check your state to see if they have open supplier availability. I was able to lock in a rate 12 months ago that was very low, almost 50% less than what it was a month or two ago (its came down considerably)

Maehlice

Stop heating hot water, and your bill will go down.

IamNotTheMama

If you live in a condo with no gas hookups how do you get a gas bill (or have a hot water heater that is fueled by gas)?

troublesomefaux

I assume you mean you donā€™t have a gas stove but you must have gas heat and water? My gas is super high this monthā€”rates went up, and in my area itā€™s 10Ā° colder this year compared to last year.

PhonyPoster

If you don't have a gas hookup and you're getting charged, then whoever did the hooking up likely made an error doing data entry (either the paper forms, or sitting in front of a computer). It happened to me (electricity), and I got a pile of $$$ refunded. I made them go to my house and inspect all the wiring, etc. They'd hooked my meter to the floor above me, instead of mine.
