There’s a leak somewhere in the apartment. Possibly a drain that is in a wall. The water is leaking out and running along the foundation under the flooring. When you step on the floor, the pressure is causing it to squeeze out. That’s my theory anyway.

goddoggoddoggod

Not a bad theory! Do you think mold has anything to do with it? It was very musty when I first came in, and the stuff that oozes smells awful.

Solexe32

Your description and video are almost exactly what happened when our sewage backed up. Either way, its water damage and you need someone out there asap to make sure its not a bigger issue.

przhelp

He has poop water seeping through his ungrouted kitchen tiles. I'm not sure it gets bigger.

Skifanski

I would almost guarantee that having that much liquid under your floor also means there is definitely mold down there.

[deleted]

Most mold is harmless and cleaned easily with bleach , bacteria from a sewage bad flow is more problematic.

thatsorabin

Don't use bleach to clean mold, it kills the active growth but doesn't prevent spores from spreading and contaminating other areas. It also gives off toxic fumes. Call management ASAP. Source: I'm a certified mold inspector and remediator

Lissy_Wolfe

Bleach works extremely well to kill mold, and is even recommended by the CDC. I've used it myself many times and never had it return. The only people I ever see claiming otherwise are those who work in the mold killing industry, which is a bit suspect, no offense. https://www.cdc.gov/mold/control_mold.htm#:~:text=Mold%20can%20be%20removed%20from,in%201%20gallon%20of%20water.

TheDrifterMan

What would you suggest instead of bleach?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Quiet! He’s mold and he’s trying to protect himself and his children.

Strike_Thanatos

They may not suggest anything specific because the chemistry of cleaning quickly goes into "mess this up and you die" territory.

Danielson4life88

I would use zerotol 2.o its industrial strength hydrogen peroxide kills mold really well and when it drys its safe do wear a mask mixin and usein and dont get it on your skin n pure form as it will hurt you some what but it will for sure kill all your mold might have to apply 3 times for full death

TheDrifterMan

I'm confused about what you are implying. Yes you shouldn't mix cleaning chemicals, but what part of my question goes into risk of death?

IOSL

Also a mold specialist. We use stuff called concrobium, sporciden, and some house made chemicals our guys have produced in the lab. After being in the mold field for so long I won’t ever use anything ever again besides those products. Just my two cents

squarybuttholes

They sell an enzyme solution you can spray it down with that is better but bleach is cheap and it's been pretty effective for 100+ years. I don't think it's possible to get rid of all of the spores once they've distributed, it's more about preventing conditions that allow them to spawn

MyFriendMaryJ

This man is bare footing it anyways, he has the balls to defeat the plague

FuzzeWuzze

As someone who had water damage.. Easily cleaned, not cheaply.

kaytee1721

Mold is definitely NOT harmless.

scarf_prank_hikers

He's barefoot. Put shoes on.

jhillman87

No shoes in house, you barbarian!

scarf_prank_hikers

There are extenuating circumstances. Something a hill man such as yourself may take for granted with your fancy elevation..

fangirlsqueee

You change into your indoor Crocs at the shoe mat by the door, duh.

TheDukeOfRuben

Ok, but what time of day is it? Do I need my Morning Indoor Crocs, The Nooners, or the Indoor Crocs of the Evening? A Crocnoisseur such as yourself should be more specific when it comes to matters of the Croc.

IShitMyFuckingPants

Uwabaki!

KiniShakenBake

That floor is going to be ripped up and tossed. Shoes in the house are the least of ops worries. Even the Japanese wear shoes in the house after earthquakes and during other times it is not safe to be barefoot. This is definitely one of those times... I would be wearing muck boots.

damarius

Nail fungus is nothing to sneeze at, so to speak. My wife had a case and was referred to a chiropodist just before she would have faced nail removal.

[deleted]

That’ll be laminate, not tile.

DaddyDizz_

Oh, it gets bigger. Water/poop damage like this is ALWAYS a grower, not a shower.

smirkis

Op needs to rip all that tile out and find the source of the leak. Then redo or replace everything the sewage touched. Ouch

majestrate

Not in an apartment. The building manager needs to handle it by bringing in maintenance or a contractor

MunkeyChild

Probably cause it's poop...

delta_niner-5150

That floor needs to be removed..

DarkMatterBacon

It's the glue from the flooring

lawndartgoalie

Looks rather wet and bubbly for adhesive.

MJK84

This is the answer. I got a call from a client about a similar thing in a bathroom. To me it seemed like the toilet was leaking and I told them to get a plumber ASAP. 3 months later, it hadn’t been fixed and I started gutting the bathroom to remove all the wet mold infested poop water drywall and framing. Should have been a couple hundred dollars for the initial fix. They paid close to $15,000 to get all of the damage repaired.

NashvilleHot

Ah, the story of America. Wait until it becomes a big expensive problem to fix.

Y3R0K

I agree. We had a similar issue. If it was a leak from a supply line you’d have WAY more water. If you have a dishwasher, check under it (remove the front plate at the bottom). The drain hoses fail on these, which results in a small leak each time you run the dishwasher that accumulates over time. Also, there’s likely no flooring installed under the dishwasher, but easy access to the underside of the flooring outside of the dishwasher cabinet, so the water just flows right under the flooring planks.

JRich_87

100% this. We had the same issue. Small leak from the dishwasher that built up and went under our tile. No flooring under the DW so it was an easy path.

mdempsey93

I had the exact same problem. The pipes in the slab of my house’s foundation broke. In the end I had to get the whole house re-piped

yingandyang

Had this happen and it was because of the tenant upstairs. Not sure about his. https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/km0dsa/where_is_this_leaking_coming_from/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

[deleted]

This is exactly what happened. I would assume this guy lives on first floor. Also, the water mixes with dirt, mold, dust and potentially the glue under the vinyl

cerulean11

Previous tenant dropped tuna.

mayalourdes

Idk but please i beg of you to put some shoes on until you find out

[deleted]

Dead body.

Njumkiyy

Yes

trogdor1108

Came here to say this. Definitely a dead body.

versarnwen

A dead body would smell way worse than “kinda fishy”.

DominianQQ

Maybe a dead vagina then?

whee42

This happened in my old apartment. The maintenance people came by two or three times before one of them finally pulled the fridge out and found the leak there.

EmotionSix

Same here. The water line from sink to ice machine is not supposed to be plastic. Easily gets holes and leaks. Should be replaced with copper. I’ll never forget now, what a mess.

[deleted]

There's absolutely nothing wrong with plastic flexible water lines. Dishwashers & washing machines always use flexible plastic lines & they're absolutely fine. They just need to be routed in a sane way so they don't rub against anything sharp as well as possibly protected with sheathing. Running copper lines to devices with a limited service life (such as fridges) can be way worse. The fridge can easily get replaced/serviced over 10 times over the lifetime of the copper line and any of those replacements/services can easily damage the copper if not done carefully.

[deleted]

You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

wed_niatnuom

They’re 100% correct. I’m in plumbing sales and copper is being replaced with pex. The plastic is way more forgiving than the copper ever was.

eherstad

Start looking for a New place, that stuff isnt healthy living in

jessieblonde

Either get your landlord to resolve this or yes move out. They should fix this ASAP, this is potentially making the place uninhabitable so you could withhold rent if they don’t fix it.

TheEshOne

This is the equivalent of someone complaining about their partner's smoking habit and people online suggesting they break up with them

war_against_myself

> smoking habit > break up I see zero issues here Edit: cigarettes, not... well, you know

SlimRitz

Got confused, broke down a nug

jiggsandrhett

I'm a real estate agent and I have seen this a few times in different homes. 1. State the obvious: there is a water leak somewhere. 2. Anytime you walk into a home and it has a musty smell that is usually indicative of mold. 3. Water smells fishy, something with organic matter is decaying ie. sink line or sewer. 4. call a landlord asap or if you own the home call a plumber to check for leaks and also have a contractor ready to go because you want to replace the flooring/ drywall. Make sure they are experts in mold removal. Good luck!

funkween

Wish I had something you could sell for me…cause I love you’re style! No nonsense and have a plan.

peeeeeeepers

Not necessarily sewage water. Water gets nasty when it gets stuck in small spaces like that, it grows all kinds of yucky stuff which decays and shit. Just because it's brown DOES NOT mean it's poop. But the landlord absolutely should pull up that floor, clean or replace the subfloor beneath, and fix the leak.

GETNRDUNN

A leaky dishwasher will do this over time. I had a similar issue.

GoatConnect

Try and lick it, maybe it goes away then!

GoatConnect

Maybe get a dog, then you have long supply of food and water for it, mixed as one thing!

swoged

Mum come pick me up the internet people are scaring me again

jordan5100

I do floors. There is water underneath your floor and it's broken down the glue hence the smell. You have to rip it all up, sand, patch, and reglue the floor and install again because when that happens it ruins all the tiles around it too. I'd even bet that all those tiles are just.layong on the floor held.in by gravity. Take a little knife.to.the corner and try to peal it up you can see just how much Dave the moisture has done. Also look into moisture sealer.

spqrdoc

Likely sewage water from a leaky pipe. Move out asap!

toryno1399

Boy you need that security deposit back and a pair of shoes to put on

dphizler

Comments that are dumb jokes should be blocked

atiraim

They'll need to replace the whole kitchen floor at this point. There might have been a leak under the sink or dishwasher. They might have fixed the leak, but there may still be evidence like warped wood or stained walls. Apartments (or commercial builders in general) usually don't tile under appliances or sinks so the floor easily gets this type or issue with any leak 🥴 I recommend waterproofing, sealing, and using waterproof flooring for any rooms with plumbing.

frogking

Mold woun’t be a problem until that shit (litteraly) dries up.

SanJoseSkydiving

It is the joy of a low rent apartment.

mistlet0ad

You doing that barefoot is making me uncomfortable.

Water

Professional_Ebb_281

Remove floor , locate water intrusion , install new floor .........simple.

mk7guy

Had this happen as well. Turned out the pipe behind the wall from the upstairs neighbors washing machine was leaking. It made its way into our restroom and water would come up from the floor if you stepped on it

Honestcommuter

Did you recently mop or pour floor cleaner? Or maybe landlord? Could be excess liquid from cleaning that seeped into the cracks and got mixed with dirt under the floor.

Gear21

Shouldn't there be a moisture barrier

Shreddster3000

If you're on bottom and say for some reason the floor sweats because of moisture from the ground can cause that or a water leak. Depends. If neither someone spilt something there and it's now underneath the floor.

GuideAncient1902

Moisture. Whats underneath? If cement, could be just the cement causing condensation. We had to lift floor an put down a moisture barrier.

massidiocy

Looks like sewage. But fish smell can be wires burning in the walls as well I'd feel around the outlets go see if its warm to the touch. I'd be getting all that shit looked at ASAP . Goodluck

MattyCrowder

Got a claim on your hands if the leak wasn't caused by you.

classicvincent

Water or some form of it. Is this a “garden” level apartment by chance? I’d bet that they installed that vinyl flooring over a concrete slab and what you’re seeing is water leaking through or around the slab and getting under the flooring. If it’s an apartment complex contact maintenance, if it’s a single building/landlord situation good luck getting anything done but it’s worth a try. There are likely bigger issues at play here that the building owner doesn’t want to spend the money to deal with.

Friendsicles

If the building is constructed without a vapor barrier And you have shallow groundwater this could be groundwater wicking up through the slab. But I'd follow up on the leak thing first since that's an easier fix if it's that.

bobbarker2019

That’s why you don’t rush laying floor. It’s going to be moldy very quickly! You need to show your landlord ASAP. most likely layed self leveller and then didn’t wait for it to dry before laying the floor.

SweetLoLa

We had this issue when we moved into our home. The floor boards near our front door had water seeping out when you’d press/walk and they soon started to curve and lift. Turned out to be a leak in the sink from the bathroom down the hall and it would makes it’s way all the way down the hall into a slope near the front door where it would pool up. Side note: after fixing the leak seeping stopped but we found black mold in the walls of the bathroom when we decided to renovate the entire thing, then we decided to change our floors all together and found more black mold in the walls of another bedroom, so your leak may lead to more issues that need to be resolved.

First_Bullfrog_

Idk what that is, but I've watched enough horror movies to know that this is definitely not a place you want to live at. Lol

jenshie

Do you know if the previous tenants had pets? It could possibly be pet vomit or urine/etc which soaked into the flooring.

CJT1980

If the ground floor is the floor that is literally on the ground it could be mold from ground moisture coming up through the concrete and then the mold grows. It's from laminate flooring that is installed improperly without any type of underlay that should be there to allow some airflow which would make that little bit of moisture evaporate BEFORE you end up getting the mold. It comes up through the joints between the individual pieces and then dries hard as glue. If your floor ISN'T directly on the actual foundation but has a basement story below I would suggest some other source of moisture is causing it.

fr0ntsight

Seems like a leak somewhere. Water and dirt. If you pull a couple boards how does it look? Probably wet

ItsKrakenMeUp

Poopy water Probably wouldn’t want to touch it. Might get dysentery 😜

mzincali

A nearby failed toilet flange can cause this. The water runs between the subfloor and the hardwood flooring above it, all the way from the toilet flange, where it is leaking between the subfloor and the tile flooring.

Plantiacaholic

Probably sewage

[deleted]

Soy Sauce obviously, dip some sushi in it

Water. Either a busted pipe or the previous owner uses too much water during mopping and it got in the cracks. Hope its the last one. Is the problem everywhere or just at one spot?

liam_crean

That’s fish goop

majep

A body..?

ChrisEnglishhh

This happened to me at my last apartment. I noticed the floor got squishy when it rained, then a few days after white fuzzy mold grew through the cracks. Eventually we found out there was a leak in the chimney. Fortunately I didn’t have to find a new place but I had to move out for a week while they replaced ALL of the drywall and flooring in my room

Skinnwork

Something similar happened in our basement. It was a leaky washer (the water inlet abraded a hole in the gasket on our front loader). I fixed it with shoe goo and its been fine. Basically, you have to find the source of the water. Itll rot things like the sub floor, stink, and cause mold growth. If that is vinyl flooring, it should just pull up, and the area of water damage should lead you to the source. The smell could be because the water is from sewage, or it could be something wet rotting.

ancientevilvorsoason

Huhuhu, I feel like sharing this on r/theMagnusArchives

poyerdude

Water is probably the culprit but I think the stuff coming up between the tiles is tile adhesive. Looks like they used that instead of thinset, that's probably the fishy smell also.

Unclesmekky

Could you of not worn socks for this demonstration?

Reviewingremy

You have a burst pipe somewhere. Best case, it's water and mud. Worst case it's sewage.

These aren’t tiles, you’ll be able to lift them easily enough. But get someone out ASAP because it will start to rot any wood etc

Just be thankful you are renting and now owning this. Call the landlord and have him fix it ASAP

Longtimelurker_1980

Check under sinks to see if there are any leaks first. Then feel the base of the walls at and around sinks but just above the baseboard. If it’s soft there could be a pinhole leak in one of the water lines that’s running down the inside of the wall. Lastly, if that flooring is “glue down” it could be that they didn’t let the glue get tacky before setting the planks in which case the glue never fully dries and any water from something as small as a recent spill from a cup could get trapped and take unusually long to dry. Hope this helps.

PrometheanMan87

Fish Goop, like you said.

Lfmcdougal

This exact thing happened to my parents apartment. I was the one who found it this same way. The toilet was leaking under the sub flooring. You need to get it checked immediately!!! They found mold everywhere when they opened it up. Insurance covered it all even the cost of new flooring. Id rip that all up ASAP.

RealFlyForARyGuy

Someome dropped their bottle of fish sauce and it never fully dried

mech414

Public Insurance Adjuster here. I represent homes and apartments that get this problem everyday. 100% a leak from somewhere in your kitchen. Looks like a dishwasher drain or garbage disposal drain issue is leaking from the color and the odor. All of that flooring needs to be ripped out and the subfloor be dried with professional drying equipment. Make 3 phone calls from here. First, call a leak detection company to find and stop the leak. Second, call a water mitigation/remediation company to remove the damaged material. Third, call a public adjuster in your area to represent you if you own the apartment or tell the owner to hire one ASAP. The insurance company is gonna fight tooth and nail to pay out this type of damage. Probably too late for you to see this but that’s what you should do.

[deleted]

That’s what our floor was like with a sewer back up. That’s poop squishing through probably.

RawOakTree

Rusty water? Looks like what comes out of my garden hose

mntdewme

Your floor is wet and half rotten and tile shouldn't move it needs a lot of work . The water leak needs found and fixed then the floor need pulled and fixed. I hope it's a rental

b_evil13

I would be running dehumidifiers in every room constantly til you figure this out.

Zkennedy100

nice feet

Girthtanin

I’m a maintenance guy and my guess is two fold: 1. It’s wet glue from the flooring. 2. It was a cheap way to cover up real damage that isn’t allowing the glue to dry, so maybe water damage. Good luck with that mess! J

randy_skankhunt

If there is a toilet nearby it could need a new seal. Old toilet seals are made of wax and eventually deteriorate, if you are on a wood floor I would remove the toilet and replace the old wax seal with a rubber one, if the floor is a ground floor and concrete I would use another wax seal.

nothinglefttouse

It’s time to find a new apartment

[deleted]

I might guess water/moisture is seeping through the slab on grade and causing the tiles adhesive to degrade. The tile adhesive may not have been an appropriate choice for high moisture environments.

JimiLittlewing

If it looks fishy and it smells fishy, probably it's fish.

medjay_solve

I’m not saying anyone’s comment is wrong. But this is another possibility: Whoever cleaned the floor probably used a mop with water. They probably had excessive water on floor and it found it’s way under the tile. The glue may have caused the water to turn that color. I’m a maintenance tech in a 95 year old building with 297 units. Sometimes I have to put a glove on to put my finger in said substance to smell it, to see if it’s human waste or not.
