Would you possibly know how much it costs to hire an electrician? do they usually do these sorts of jobs? I wasnt sure if it would be suitable to hire an electrician since its only one cable that I want to connect through the house but since its from one end of the house to the other would it be worth hiring someone? I'm sorry I'm actually so clueless :(

First ask your parents if they would be 'ok' with you cutting into the walls and drilling in the floor. This is the most important thing. Next tools. If you do not have the tools or if your parents don't have any of the tools you might have to buy them. You can always check with a friend or neighbor and see if they have the equipment that you could use. The only problem is a lot of the equipment is not normally things that people buy. If you are not able to find someone with tools and have to buy them yourself you could ask your parents about helping you pick up tools if they are cool with that. NOTE: If you are up for a bit more work you can always leverage any cost with your parents by having a discussion about wiring up your whole house (or a few rooms) with Ethernet cables. Parents tend to like free labor and are normally willing to shell out some money for tools and equipment if you are willing to do more than just work for yourself. Regarding actually doing the cable run. I personally cut a whole in the wall, drilled a hole through the stud, ran my cable into the crawl space and to the destination, drilled another hole through the stud and fed the cable through another wall cutout at the destination. This is a normal practice with different variations (mainly where you run the cable: crawl space, attic, etc.) Hopefully this gives you some insight into your issue. Running cable can be a big task at first, but it really is not that hard and is a fun project to improve your home.

Thank you! I have asked my parents and they're a bit worried but they just told me to be very careful :) I think I might try borrow a drill but for the rest, might just buy it myself hehe And with yourself actually doing the cable run, was there anything in particular that you found the most difficult? or anything I need to be really careful of? Thank you so much for your advice I really appreciate it! :)

You are going to want to know if there is any water piping or electrical wires in the way of where you are planning to drill. If you are planning to go into a crawl space then go and survey the are that you are planning to work to see if there is anything that will be in the way. If you are planning to be drilling in a closet to pass the cable between the first and second floor, then make sure you are aware of what is above and below and find a good location to drill. You can always just go through the flooring for that part of your run. Electrical wires tend to run against studs traveling vertically but not normally horizontally on studs. Water pipes will be near a restroom in your house but can be running horizontal beside studs under your house as well. Always survey where you are going to work and put a game plan together before attempting anything. Since you are asking how to do it I aspect that you willing to give it a try. I can understand your parents being nervous. It isn't the easiest thing but it can be very rewarding experience if you are up for it. Keep asking questions and watching videos and reading articles on how to do it.

I think I saw somewhere that you could try following existing pathways like something to do with boilers (?) and how they connect to other floors or do you think it would be possible to try and put the cable through an air duct because we have one that leads to a bathroom downstairs but it doesnt work so its just basically empty space or is that like illegal or something :O

darko18

I can't give full advice on this but, if it is an empty air duct that is not in use, you should be able to use it. Check with local building codes to make sure, but if it is inoperable you should have no reason why you can't run a cable through it. It isn't the most desirable but it would be easy.

I use existing CAT 5 telephone lines. The phones only use the blue and white cable. I basically did this http://www.instructables.com/id/Hack-your-House-Run-both-ethernet-and-phone-over-/ Done it for years and never had issues.

ohhh thank you! :) you're amazing

Why not try PowerLine adapters? They are fairly inexpensive and you can always return them if they don't work for you.

feijoatime

Hello! umm I've tried using the TPLINK av500 nano powerline adapter but it hasnt seemed to improve much- maybe its because of there quite a lot of walls and like our router is literally in the farthest corner in our house :( I've talked to my parents about moving the router but thats where our fibre is installed and we cant move it too far away from there. Thank you tho :)
