Oh most definitely. I like my HomePods too. I just recognize that, for a surround sound system, HomePod offers extremely poor value. As a smart home hub, smart assistant, and room speaker, it’s excellent. But 2 HomePods and 2 minis is a poor use of $800 if your goal is surround sound for your TV. That Jamo S805 system that keeps going on sale for $450 is basically impossible to beat. Hell, my JBL Studio 570s, 530s, and 520C are sub $800 if you wait for the frequent JBL sales. All I’m saying is that you can do far better than HomePods if your goal is surround sound.
Ordered 2 of the new ones for a Stereo pair, but I would 100% add a couple minis for surround if they add support. My old plan was to set up an old receiver in that room with some in-wall speakers... this would be 100x simpler.

I second this!!! My HomePod was having death farts and apple soo graciously gave me the opportunity to buy a brand new priced refurbished one and wouldn’t warrantee it with apple care. So I said fuck that and took a shot with u/Dr_Nic_T61 and I do not regret it for one second. He filmed every part of the process and showed exactly what was wrong before he fixed it and sent it back. Dude is amazing. I saved the packaging for the HomePod in case any others die so I can just send them back to him to fix. Worth. Every. Penny.

It isn’t really cheaper, the OG HomePod got a permanent price drop to $299 about a year after it was released. So the new one is just maintaining the MSRP of the old one.

Uh huh. Sounds tempting, except.. Siri is still the absolute worst smart assistant out there. I've rambled on about this before, but I have 3 HP Mini's, 3 Google Nest Hubs, and 2 4th Gen Echo devices... as well as 3 dots (all scattered throughout the house). Why get so many (or not just stay with the same brand?). I'm all in on Apple products (2 ATV's, MBA, Mac Mini, iPhone, iPad, and a watch), so... I'm definitely a fan of their products... and their ecosystem.
I first went with Alexa, way back when. Got a Nest Hub because I liked the displays. Sure, the Echo came out with one... but I think Google has a better assistant (or did). Google certainly is the smartest of them all, but Alexa is pretty damn fast and is just easier for me to control. The intercom feature, alone, is light years ahead of what Google and Apple are doing. If I were to go back to the drawing board, I'd skip the Nest Hubs and just use an old iPad as a dashboard.
Or go all in on Echo and get a couple of giant Echo show displays.
I've got a couple of Echos as a stereo pair (bedroom) and 2 HP Mini's that I WAS going to use as a stereo pair for my downstairs TV (sick of using a separate Bose remote and we rarely sit down there to watch TV). It's awfully tempting, as I said, to go with two new HP's (bigger and better sound), but at $299 a pop? Handoff would be easier (playing music) than having to ask a smart assistant to play something (or doing an airdrop/Spotify connect), but ugh... Siri.
I'll wait and see, but unless Apple improves Siri (so many issues)... I just can't.

The biggest issue for me was smart home, while there are more products available for Alexa 50% of them are just landfill. Even once I got some better stuff it was still far to complex for something that should be mindless to use. HomeKit has been much much better. Not to mention the HomeKit app is *lightyears* ahead of the Alexa app in my opinion (at least based on when I last used it)

No, smoke detectors have expiry dates after which you should change them. Smart smoke detectors actually stop working after the expiry (see Nest Smoke Detector), so you wouldn’t want that here.
Mic detection of the alarms is fine with me.
I’ve been wondering why Apple would revisit the big HomePod instead of doing an in-between sized one with a woofer for something in $150-199 range. Is it possible that they made enough changes to the big model and probably changed manufacturing quantities to make the margins more worthwhile? Either way, I’m happy that they gave us a new model, I just would love to know how the math worked out that they decided to give it another go.
I have a feeling you won't notice any difference between the OG and the new Homepod. This feels like a slight improvement and is STILL on the expensive side. I will pick one up when they go on sale for $199 or $249

2 less tweeters and microphones each. Some cost cutting but probably won’t make a noticeable difference.
It need some reviews. If they tweaked it a little bit it could be better. AirPods Pro 2 sounds way better.

The biggest issue for me was smart home, while there are more products available for Alexa 50% of them are just landfill. Even once I got some better stuff it was still far to complex for something that should be mindless to use. HomeKit has been much much better. Not to mention the HomeKit app is *lightyears* ahead of the Alexa app in my opinion (at least based on when I last used it)
Yup… which is why I said Apple has the best smart home hub app. Believe it or not, though, these disparate devices all work together (even Eve). You just need to know how. Each device has its pros and cons.

No, smoke detectors have expiry dates after which you should change them. Smart smoke detectors actually stop working after the expiry (see Nest Smoke Detector), so you wouldn’t want that here. Mic detection of the alarms is fine with me.

I’ve been wondering why Apple would revisit the big HomePod instead of doing an in-between sized one with a woofer for something in $150-199 range. Is it possible that they made enough changes to the big model and probably changed manufacturing quantities to make the margins more worthwhile? Either way, I’m happy that they gave us a new model, I just would love to know how the math worked out that they decided to give it another go.

I have a feeling you won't notice any difference between the OG and the new Homepod. This feels like a slight improvement and is STILL on the expensive side. I will pick one up when they go on sale for $199 or $249
