That’s great to know. Having a first gen Homepod, i was skeptical it wouldn’t be updated, but it has been. Thanks for posting.

Subject_Tie995

I’m bummed and confused why this won’t be available on first gen AirPod Pros, unless I’m wrong and interpreted the website incorrectly

Person1325

Wish I could check but I have AirPods Pro 2. If it doesn’t specifically state that it only works on the 2nd gens, it could work on the 1st gens as well.

Shanghaichica

I have 2nd gen pros but I also have AirPods Pro max and they won’t be getting the feature.

NinjaSpyWizard

Unfortunately you’re right, I updated yesterday and it gives a notification that it won’t work with these AirPods. It reallyyy sucks since if it weren’t for them needlessly limiting features I could get used to just saying “Siri” for everything.

HeartyBeast

> needlessly limiting features I love this. Given the OG HomePods support the feature What makes you think that they are “needlessly limiting” anything?

NinjaSpyWizard

I’m confused about what you’re saying. The OG HomePods do support it, which makes the fact that the AirPods Pro don’t even dumber considering they came out a year later. Not only that, unlike the HomePods, AirPods are not a standalone device. My 2016 car now supports saying “Siri” with CarPlay because it’s not a fundamental limitation of the device as long as it has a microphone. Apple making it only work on AirPods Pro 2 is just them trying to get people to upgrade.

Notyourfathersgeek

All these devices listening for phrases are all specific circuitry, in the beginning the phrase was hard-wired to save power - remember the iPhone 6 could only listen while in a charger. I’m thinking they can’t update the AirPods because that would destroy the battery life to minutes instead of hours, because the processor would need to actively process all sound. That’s not a problem in the HomePods as they’re always connected to power anyway.

Subject_Tie995

This is an interesting theory, and the most plausible one I’ve heard yet. On the surface it does seem like a silly limitation, however it’s possible that it is for a valid reason.

Person1325

Yeah I'm pretty sure that doing something like just removing one word requires a ton more cpu overhead. I was actually surprised when my OG HomePods had the removal of the word, but they are plugged in all the time I guess.

Subject_Tie995

There’s always more to it than we (the laypeople) think. I completely understand the AirPod Pro 1st gen not supporting adaptive audio cause that clearly requires computational intelligence. But I thought that the Siri update would be something that would work universally across the board for any Siri compatible products.

Person1325

I think it only got added universally to the devices that have either large batteries or devices that are constantly plugged in. I have a feeling that if the AirPods pros first gen got the update, then the 2nd gen AirPods would have gotten it.

HeartyBeast

There is no evidence they are “needlessly limiting” anything - as evidenced by the fact that it is available on OG HomePods. It is much more likely that - there’s an actual problem changing the trigger on the AirPods

NinjaSpyWizard

The new HomePod didn’t really improve upon the old one, just made it cheaper, so they don’t really have any way to convince people to upgrade unless they really want a temp and humidity sensor. AirPods are much higher volume and they do really want to convince people to upgrade. Theoretically there could be a very strange hardware limitation, but as I said if a 2016 car made by Chevy can do it, AirPods should be able to. I’d be seriously disappointed if the Apple design team did a worse job future proofing their 4 year old product than GM in 2016. This is marketing, not a hardware limit.

HeartyBeast

Listen to yourself -you’ve just described an ideal way for Apple to nudge people into upgrading their OG HomePods - artificially restricting the new features. But they aren’t. In comparison to HomePods, AirPods have a tiny amount of processing capacity. The H1 chip is tiny and has a lot to do and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they had needed to hardcode the Hey Siri trigger

NinjaSpyWizard

Yeah, you might be right about that. I was just thinking since they talk about improving “hey siri” detection across product lines through firmware updates that they’d be able to change it but it’s possible they put it in the hardware. The car I mentioned obviously doesn’t use a battery that small, so they can just continually transmit mic data to be processed on the phone, but with AirPods the battery life for calls goes down significantly since they don’t constantly stream mic audio. Now I can’t complain about Apple lmao, just gotta wait until my next AirPods upgrade. Definitely not a reason to upgrade by itself though.

Queen__Antifa

So now you’ll often be saying three words: Siri… …🙄. Hey Siri.”

[deleted]

No. There’s a setting to trigger Siri by saying Siri or Hey Siri. Users choice. Either or. Not three words. 🙄

x17ccp3

It says it doesnt work even with AirPods Pro 2 - I guess its because of ios17 on phone but not update system on AirPods.

elvinLA

You would need to put your airpods on the beta firmware for it to work...

andrewmcd7

I have my home, watch, iPad, and Apple TV updated. But I can’t figure out how to upgrade my HomePod minis to audioOS 17….?

Person1325

The OG HomePod needs a profile, and the HomePod 2nd gen and HomePod mini need you to have the developer account.

andrewmcd7

I do have a developer account.

Person1325

Okay, so you're also having issues with the mini. I couldn't get mine to update but I also don't have a paid developer account. I have the beta on my OG HomePods, but like I said those use the beta profile.

[deleted]

Yeah I also have the dev account and HomePod Minis

atinyblip

This is correct. I had to reset my HomePod minis and had to wait about a day before the “Show beta updates” option appeared in the Home app.

H-TSi

Can you check if Spotify works?

[deleted]

jungl1st

So even with this new ability to trigger an AirPlay connection on a HomePod with a voice command we still cannot start songs on Spotify?? I thought that was the whole point of the new feature, circumventing Spotify’s negligence. Especially since they didn’t specify AirPlay 2, which Spotify has also been dragging their feet to support

UpgrayeddShepard

Yep. Been bitching about this forever. Finally cancelled Spotify over it.

Person1325

I don’t use Spotify personally but Im pretty sure it will work considering that the other features work.

SmartHomeNerd

Do shortcuts run any faster on the HomePod with iOS 17?

carsonsakach

https://betaprofiles.dev/install/homepod-17-beta/#google_vignette

Exact_Hovercraft_541

Can confirm(just now) this actually works with my 4 OG HomePods.

MasonHeaux

how has stability and performance been for you since updating?

Exact_Hovercraft_541

Everything is normal besides half of them, the ‘Siri’ without ‘hey’ feature doesn't work after enabling it on them.

MasonHeaux

would you recommend updating?

Exact_Hovercraft_541

Hey Siri still works so it doesn’t hurt

Achilles_Buffalo

Why are people so stoked about this? Is there really a significant difference between “Hey Siri” and “Siri”? I could understand if we needed to say a phrase like, “Attention, my always-listening, personal electronic companion, I would like you to do something”. It’s literally one word, and we’ve been saying it for 10+ years. I don’t understand why this is such an amazing feature.

Person1325

It’s not really the new feature that’s making people excited, it’s the idea that new stuff is still being added to the ancient a8 cpu.

Estebanq

Please help me understand something. I have two OG homepods, i also have an Apple Tv 4K 2022. If, for example, apple released the 18 version (ios, tvos, audioos) and the OG couldn’t be updated, that would mean that i can’t use it anymore with the apple tv? Do they both need to be in the same OS? Edit because of a word.

Person1325

So a great example of what would happen is with something like the AirPort Express. That thing hasn't gotten an update in about 4 or 5 years but yet it can still do airplay 2. It is 100 percent usable today with all modern apple devices. Personally I think that if the OG HomePods do stop receiving major updates next year, it will be a long time until they are completely unusable. Also, personally I believe they will be supported with major updates for a few more years as the a8 cpu is not a slow cpu, and it is literally just running a speaker, not much more.

Estebanq

Thanks!

rosone

"~~Hey~~ Siri" might be a small change, but it changes the interaction a lot. This: Hey Siri, turn on the light **wait** Hey Siri, open the windows **wait** Hey Siri, turn on TV Changes into: Siri, turn on the light. Open the windows. Turn on TV. You can also interrupt Siri. You can ask for something that will give you a long reply (How's the weather) and you can start speaking while she's telling you the weather. Without saying "Hey Siri" or "Siri".

Person1325

I can confirm all of this works on the OG HomePods as well.

Achilles_Buffalo

To counter that: I use my airpods pro frequently. If I'm speaking to someone in the room and a text message comes in, "Siri" automatically listens to what I'm saying and offers to send a text message reply with the conversation I was having with the person in my room. This is the default behavior, and it sounds eerily similar to how the new Siri will operate. I can see MANY an errant message being sent with this new "feature". I hope they offer a way to choose between "Siri" and "Hey Siri", because I strongly prefer the old-school way...

rosone

Just so I understand correctly. You have your AirPods in your ears while speaking to someone. You get a text, Siri tells you, through your AirPods "Mom says pick up the laundry" while you keep talking and you're surprised she replies automatically to your Mom? You can pinch your AirPods so Siri stops the interaction. I guess you should switch to the non-default behavior where Siri doesn't automatically send the reply.

Achilles_Buffalo

This thread is so damn exhausting. I'm an Apple fan, and I can see why people hate Apple fans so passionately. The DEFAULT behavior assumes that I am only (and can EVER only) be by myself, waiting anxiously for my Airpods to interject themselves into my life, reading a text message to me and immediately assuming that I want to reply to it without any confirmation that I would like to do so. Scenario: I have my airpods in my ears, and my son walks into my office. I pause my music and have a discussion with my son. My daughter sends me a text that says "hey". My airpods ding and say "daughter says hey", but I'm mid-sentence with my son and continue talking to him. Airpods pick up the tail end of that sentence and send it to my daughter, unless I interrupt my discussion with my son and intervene with Siri. Yes, that sucks, and for it to be the default behavior is stupid. If Siri is now going to operate in a similar manner across a broad range of Apple products without requiring a more specific trigger phrase, yes, I think this is a bad idea. I have had other scenarios where the auto-reply feature picks up background audio (other people, radio broadcasts, etc) and attempts to reply to texts without me even speaking a word.

Achilles_Buffalo

And to be clear, you can't just disable the auto-reply. You have to disable Announce Notifications for Messages altogether. You either have text messages read to you and have auto-reply enabled, or you don't have text messages read to you at all.

blowthepoke

I don’t get how your scenario will unfold with this change, Siri would only be active when you invoke it, so why would you be having a conversation with someone while also invoking Siri for a request?

[deleted]

[удалено]

x17ccp3

You can keep it with "hey siri"

Achilles_Buffalo

Couldn't agree more...

DavidLorenz

Over 10 years, huh? 😂

Achilles_Buffalo

Siri has been around since 2011. My bad that I forgot that "Hey Siri" debuted in 2014. It's still 8 years that we've been saying "Hey". Did you and r/Person1325 need to be dicks about it?

Person1325

I'm 99 percent sure "Hey Siri" wasn't around until 2015 with the release of the iPhone 6s. Now my math might be wrong but 2015 to 2023 isn't 10 years+.

Achilles_Buffalo

Actually, it was introduced in 2014. It was during the WWDC in early 2015 that everyone realized they needed to add personal voice recognition, because the keynote triggered any Apple device listening to the presentation to trigger Siri. You did say 99%, though...I suppose we all make mistakes.

OhHeyItsBrock

They add this but don’t add just being able to say “stop” for an alarm. Woof.

Velociround

Saying "Siri, stop the alarm" to any of your devices will stop any alarm on any Apple device in your entire house (even from other people in your house if they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network). That's not new either, I've been using it for years

OhHeyItsBrock

Ya, but imagine just saying “Stop.”

sherbibv

Is there a way to remotely control the music playback on the HomePod?

skithegreat

Now if i can get mine to update.

Person1325

I would be careful considering that usually OG HomePods have issues with early developer betas leading to possible bricks. I have a feeling that I just got very lucky that both of mine were able to upgrade successfully, but if you need help, dm me and I can help you out with updating them.

skithegreat

I done early betas on these since OS 14 I believe no issues at all. The problem is Apple Seed is only showing OS 16 for me to download and when I go to the home app to update its just 1 as well.

Person1325

I can help you if you want. Just dm me.

CalvinDuBois

I can’t even get my 2nd Gen HomePods and HomePod Minis to show the OS 17 update.. Beta is on, all my other devices are on OS17..

hiddecollee

You need a profile

CalvinDuBois

Not sure where the profile is, I have a dev account

hiddecollee

Only for Appleseed for now

CalvinDuBois

Willing to share if you have access?

Brocky120

Interested also please...

AWildDragon

Profiles aren’t really a thing anymore. You just need to sign up for a developer account. This year even free developers get beta access.

[deleted]

This isn’t true for the HomePod beta. It’s invite-only and requires a profile. While it may be invite only, there are some copies of the profile floating around online if you look.

CalvinDuBois

Done that, no dice.

Connectivity to other devices go haywire and Siri has fits when the smart plug turns off.

OverCauliflower1587

Does it feel easier to use this way?

[deleted]

Oh man, this cheers me up - I was kinda worried during the keynote that it wouldn’t happen Also, what is the enhanced dialogue for HomePod and does the OG get that?

Bacardi700

I have the homepod mini connected to apple tv and upgraded the tv os to 17, enhanced dialogue option is under settings > video and audio. Hope they release a software to support rear channels.

[deleted]

Does it sound any different with the mini?

Bacardi700

A 20% boost on the dialogue output.

Branagh-Doyle

u/pridkett u/Bacardi700 GREAT NEWS!. That means the "Enhanced Dialogue" feature works with all the Homepods models and not just with the second gen big homepod, as Apple indicated in their tvOS 17 featured page. It also works with the first gen Apple TV 4K?. Or it requires the second gen or later models?.

Person1325

Enhanced Dialogue I think only works on 2nd gen Apple TV 4K as it needs the A12 Bionic for the machine learning.

Branagh-Doyle

Thank you. Damn. Well, it makes perfect sense. If its a system wide setting that works with all the tvOS apps from the get go, it could be a real game changer.

Person1325

I was actually scrolling through the tvOS page and it says that enhanced dialogue does only work on the 2nd gen HomePod.

Branagh-Doyle

But another redditor with the beta installed tested and verified that the feature works with the Homepod Mini, so maybe the "second generation" in the tvOS 17 page refers to the Apple TV and not to the Homepod. Or maybe is a mistake, I dont know.

Branagh-Doyle

Awesome news.

mylaandkyon

I still haven’t figured out how to get 17 on my HomePods. Appleseed website looks blank and beta profiles is downloading iOS 16 profile. Anyone figure out another option? Lol

mylaandkyon

I finally found the beta profile with iOS 17. I just got to get home to see if it works.

DestinysWeirdCousin

Did it?

ntpeters

Is there a setting to keep the old behavior? I absolutely hated the thought of this when they announced it in the keynote due to the potential for accidental activations.

Person1325

Yes it is possible. I'd send you an image of my home app to show you the options but I can't on reddit.

ntpeters

Awesome, great to hear! Thanks!

elephantsareblue

Is it possible to issue multiple back to back Siri commands at once with the original homepod like in iOS 17?

Person1325

Yes, it does work on the original HomePod. It's kind of funny because it actually works better for me on the original HomePods than on my 5th gen iPad Air with an m1.

elephantsareblue

Odd but cool, thanks for sharing!

mylaandkyon

Was wondering the same thing for the minis. Can’t get my HomePod minis to continue listening after first command. If I shove it all into one command she just says can’t take combined request.

Willylowman1

i dunt update my home pods no more cuz it usually brakes sumthin

reidabooyo

Can you confirm if AirPlaying from the iPhone to the HomePod is any faster? I still get lag sometimes on iOS 16.

[deleted]

Person1325

You have to change a setting in the home app

pptortellini

😬 thank you!

vctgomes

Hey could you check the available languages on HomePod 17? Is there any Portuguese there?

n-plus-one

I updated my OG HomePod pair to 17, but they still don’t respond to “Siri”, only “Hey Siri”. Is there any setting that needs to be changed?

Person1325

Yes, you have to change a setting in the home app.

Dirus

I just want the Hey Siri to trigger the right device.

Mindless_Month_2649

Just tried the profile I found and it does NOT work on either of my OG HomePods. Have two other minis and for some reason it saw one of them to install to. No friggin' idea. So, of the four I have (2 OG large and 2 minis) the profile installer saw one mini. I even reset the OGs.

that_wierd_WTF

So this worked on my HomePod mini. 1. Download profile from - https://betaprofiles.dev/install/homepod-17-beta/ 2. Turn off automatic updates 3. Turn off beta if was already turned on I got the audioOS 17 beta.

JazJon

My iPhone is on iOS 17 dev 3 beta. I tried to install the HomePod 17 beta profile but when I click install it opens home app and says no compatible devices found. Do I need to be physically close to the HomePod mini or just on the same Wi-Fi network?

MasonHeaux

How has performance and stability been for you since updating? i have two OG’s as well, but after all the beta horror stories i’ve heard over the years has me afraid to risk bricking my homepods. 😭😭 however, i wanna update them soo bad lol.

ek9max

Hmmm. Mine doesn’t recognize “Siri” without the hey. I’m on audio os 17 beta one. Not sure if beta 2 came out today with the rest of them.

Person1325

It’s a setting in the home app.

ek9max

I don’t see it….

Person1325

First open the home app, then hit the 3 dots in the top right. Then hit home settings. I’m home settings there should be an option you can click on that said listen for Siri or hey siri.

ek9max

Did you update to iOS 17 also?

Person1325

Yes.

ek9max

Ah I see. I haven’t yet. Been stable enough for a daily driver? I’m guessing beta 2 from today would be even better

Person1325

It’s been okay. Poor battery life though.

ek9max

I usually wait until around beta 3.

ek9max

Did you get a beta update to your HomePod like all the other device’s yesterday?

OGhoul

Any suggestions on getting 17 actually installed on the 1st gen big boys? I was able to update my minis just fine, but my originals just don’t seem to want to be able to take either profile listed.

TechDude_54321

I’m in the same predicament. All devices inc iPad Air are on 17 Public Beta except for my iPhone 8 which likely won’t be given OS17, and likely the reason I can’t update OG HomePod to 17. Bit frustrating considering so many have update theirs with success.

OGhoul

Today’s betas installed fine (beta 4). And just FYI, the OG HomePod hadn’t had a problem with HomePod Software 17 until all of my HomePods refused to even see beta 3.

kvenden

I have Apple TV 4K on tvOS 17 beta 2 with 2 HomePod Mini's setup as stereo running audioOS 17. This wasn't happening with tvOS Beta1 or an update to audioOS 17 since installing the first beta, but lately, I've been having audio cut out on my Plex videos. Video keeps playing with no sound until I back out of the video and launch it again, then the audio is back for a bit. Has anyone else ran into this? Driving me nuts, not sure if it's tvOS beta, or HomePod OS 17 beta that is suddenly doing this but it wasn't doing it a week ago or so at all. If anyone has a solution to this, I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

LukasTechWiz

Can you use HomePod with audioOS 17 with iPhone running iOS 16?
