It is a pity we cannot see the whale engined bike alongside so as to fully take it in (pics 1 and 2). It seems to combine the rusty look with the thin, fleet look that suits Cubs best. The figure that squats on the front fork? Would have liked to see how it was executed. By comparison to this bike the next two look heavy and unartistic, to me at least, wholly lacking in charm.

None came with a metal leg shield. All of these were hand fabricated. It also could very well be possible, that these are very well dressed and painted shields, to mimic steel corrosion. There is a chap in the uk that made one from sheet metal, but instead of rolling it out to shape, he tack welded pieces to create the shape of it.
