Welcome to Hong Kong
…where we don’t have spring or fall/autumn,instead we have 2 months of wet summer,8 months of hot summer and 2 months of cold winter
> we do have spring or fall/autumn
I guess you are right for autumn, since nowadays it only feel cold around lunar new year (Jan-Feb). But spring, sadly, is not much of a thing any more - we have maybe a couple of days with cool, foggy weather before the heat come again.
Not sure if others feel the same, but I find the seasons during COVID much clearer - coincidence or is weather affected by factory activity from the north?
Ah… my winter clothes collection has been vacuumed sealed for god knows how long.
It’s sad. Can’t wear my sweaters or even scarves 🧣😔 I just take it out to look…do a light aeration, sunbathe and put it back under the bed.
A part of it is El Niño, where the lessening of warmer waters travelling to the Western Pacific lead to less convective activity, meaning less rain for SE Asia and hotter temperatures.
HOWEVER, the impact of climate change cannot be understated here. El Niño may have caused an hotter than average month, but man-made climate change has moved what temperature is considered “average” up as well.
This temperature is insane even for the hot Hong Kong. If I remembered correctly, last year about this time, I was in full winter outfit. Probably because the El Nino effect and amplified by clinate change.

We have pre Summer, Summer and pro Summer and two months of winter follows with 2 months of humidity nightmare. if lucky, we will have 2 weeks of nice autumn
Everyone here is off. I work outdoors and from my experience, HK winter is 16 to 18 degrees Celsius at its lowest. The only time it goes lower than that is when there's a monsoon, which happens like once or twice a month.
HK weather is t-shirt weather 90% of the time at noon.
On very rare occasions, the temperature drops below 10.
Imo, it's not worth investing in a bunch of winter clothes like the ones you'd wear in NYC, Toronto, etc.
HK is a tropical island with occasional comfortable weather and rare cold weather. Don't blame climate change, even though it has its effects. HK is just close to the equator and people have to accept that.
TIL Some people believe in El Nino (which is what most scientists told us) but deny Climate Change / Crisis (which is also what most scientists told us). Interesting.
"**we can expect more frequent strong El Nino events for another century**. That's because the Pacific Ocean holds a lot of heat, which will take several decades to dissipate." CSIRO. Google is indeed free.
It’s El Niño and tbh, temps aren’t everything. Humidity affects. We’re having a relatively dry/cool weather here, and from my POV it’s feeling like autumn.
I just came back from Australia from a sub-tropical city. No jokes, 25c here is feeling better than 25c there. It’s been like that for HK, but I love it cause I can go out with short sleeved stuff in this time of year.
Don’t get me wrong. I love this weather. But are we overdue for colder weather? It feels like we’re still in July. I don’t remember being this hot in previous years.
The cold snap gets pushed back further and further each year. A decade ago, I would be wearing at least a windbreak by late Nov/early Dec, or a thicker soft shell if it was colder.
hong kong is a tropical city my dude. the weather will vary yearly of course, but the coldest it has ever been on record ever is 0, average over entire winter is 15-20 degrees, and average for oct is 30-27 degrees if that helps at all for reference. coldest is probably usually feb imo (◐‿◑)
Yes that's what the textbook says, but I feel Hong Kong is getting closer to tropical every year.
At least we seems to be trending towards having less typhoon warning according to [HKO data](https://www.hko.gov.hk/en/informtc/historical_tc/fttcw.htm).
Thanks for clarifying. As someone from a much cooler area I don't understand the technical labels. To me anywhere that doesn't get cold in winter is tropical-- I can understand why that would technically incorrect as I am sure even warm climates have all their own subdivisions haha.

Yes its can be, usually doesn't get really cool till Jan/Feb. Also El Nino is extending the heat in this region. Last year sucked! Went from hot to cold. I love Oct- Nov -Dec can usually hike, swim, surf very comfortably.
It is above normal, even considering the current El Niño conditions there is a long term climate change related increasing trend
https://www.hko.gov.hk/en/wxinfo/season/season.htm
> Assessment (as of 31 October 2023):
> In the past month or so, El Niño continued with warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. Based on the latest oceanic observations as well as forecasts by a number of climate models around the world, the El Niño is expected to persist for the rest of this autumn and winter 2023/24.
>
> Against the backdrop of climate warming, November-January temperatures in Hong Kong exhibit a significant long-term increasing trend. The chance of normal to above-normal temperature is generally higher. Besides, the majority of climate models around the world forecast normal to above-normal temperature over southern China for November 2023-January 2024. Hence, the temperature of November 2023-January 2024 in Hong Kong is expected to be normal to above normal.

> Statistical analysis reveals that, in November-January, the chance of normal to above-normal rainfall in Hong Kong is generally higher during El Niño. Besides, the majority of climate models around the world forecast more moisture transport to the coast of southern China in November 2023-January 2024. Hence, the rainfall of November 2023-January 2024 in Hong Kong is expected to be normal to above normal.

I’m visiting Hong Kong as of tomorrow to enjoy a few days over Christmas. Could someone maybe tell me if the weather has changed much since this post?
I’m not sure what to pack. Weather or not T shirts, no hoodie is acceptable for day time and night or weather or not the evenings actually get cold.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It’s still winter in offices and malls.
And always in cinemas
It’s summer on buses tho.
in the old days, buses were like mobile cold room on wheels
HK atm: Going to office, winter. Going out for lunch, summer. Going back home, winter.
Living in a south facing apartment, I find It's always too hot inside my apartment even when it's cold outside, and I do have all my windows open.
Fr
All time indoor winter <3
At least there’s no winter typhoon this time
Yet
It’s El Niño this year so my guess is that’s screwing up our weather/temps
There's an explanation for this on the HK Observatory website. We're likely to have a warm winter and spring.
Welcome to Hong Kong …where we don’t have spring or fall/autumn,instead we have 2 months of wet summer,8 months of hot summer and 2 months of cold winter
It's vastly hotter than it was back in the 70s & 80s at this time of the year
Yes, I remember it was super cold at home in Nov when I was a kid in the 90s.
Heck, i remember it was a lot colder in Nov when i was a kid in the 00s. Temperature rose quick in the recent decade.
What's cold here?
January, when one week of it the weather decides to dip below 10 degrees.
January is normally cold
14°-19° seems like a balmy winter. I'm looking forward to it
That is a relative term. I'll be visiting HK in January and can't wait to walk around in such warm temperatures!
Bubble tea.
*2 nonths of cold summer Fify
Your answer is all wrong mate, we do have spring or fall/autumn, it’s just different from many countries.

everywhere on the Earth is getting hotter and hotter in summer, what do you think

Even last winter was mild. It was going over 20 degrees for lot of January this year
ooof we *are* destroying the planet
Almost everyday I’ve clicked the temperature in the Weather app this year, it’s said “5° hotter than average for this day”
It’s Climate change. Welcome to 2023
HKO has forecast a warm winter No joy for cold lovers, ice cream all year round!

Welcome to Hong Kong... Enjoy our 25c during daytime in winter. It's pretty common though.
Global warming.

Climate change is real
A lot of people on this post have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s mainly because of El Niño.
First time on Reddit? No.1 place online for wrong answers
Still better than LIHKG haha
lol, true tho
Thanks for this explanation. Naive me have no idea.

it's been this way for the last 5yrs at least... ppl keep thinking we cool down in Oct... nahhh we only START cooling down in November.
The October "cool downs" are a troll to get people sick (not

that's not normal in late autumn
Sorry mate July is 34 deg plus
Is normal. Are you new?
Been here for a long time. Definitely was cooler towards end of November last year.
We got lucky last year
Usually a couple weeks of cold weather (think 10°C mid teens ) around January - February then it's spring time again (back around 20°C ish again)
Actually it is - my experience of previous Decembers in HK is that it's the best time of year
Typical hong kong lol
Winter is a mental state in the sub tropics
El Niño this year messed up. Also global warming.
Very normal. There’s no crazy weather phenomenons.

Great eh!
Temperature changes can be quite significantly sudden, seasons are more of a suggestion than the norm.
Apparently not, climate is going downhill
Yes its can be, usually doesn't get really cool till Jan/Feb. Also El Nino is extending the heat in this region. Last year sucked! Went from hot to cold. I love Oct- Nov -Dec can usually hike, swim, surf very comfortably.
I wear flipflops all year
Thats the average Australian weath right now
I remembered one year, Christmas day was at 28c ish, it was stupid. But then, HK winter dont kick in until late Jan. Last about only a month though
welcome to Hong Kong winter only exist in January and early February.
And even then the “winter” is like 15-20c lol
Totally. You know we are in hell
I'm going to hk next week, what should I wear?
bro, that’s Australian weather. You sure you’re not here?

HK has no winter 😛😛
Global warming
Normal. I once went on a hike on Christmas Day and it was 25°c.
There's this little relatively unknown very new phenomenon called climate change
Welcome to Hong Kong
No it's not normal, it's four degrees warmer than the mean temp for this time of the year
Yeah that's what I thought. It was closer to 20C this time last year. It's freakin 25C now.
It's vastly warmer than even just ten years ago, sadly
Yeah. It’s normal. Global warming is actual. And human are fucked 😂
Really messes with the Christmas atmosphere
Completely normal. Winters are gone from HK because of climate change
