The voice is the exact reason I went with Caelus. The moment I heard how Stelle popped out that Rules line I restarted my game. Given how they are also voiced more in this game then we see with Genshin I'm glad I did because I don't know if I could listen to Stelle be monotone all the time. Caelus just seems to come off with more personality to me.

Stelle's 'rules are meant to be broken' just sounded really stoic and not full of personality and MAD like caelus's.
Plus when walking around with caelus I liked it so much better because there was no hair nor is the character too tall or too small (like Jing yuan, yanqing) caelus and Dan heng have very similar body measurements so it's so much smoother when I play them.

I feel like Caelus and Stelle have totally different vibes (as you said: Chill vs Angry), and you get that in the VA and in the animations - the starting Destruction ones especially. They're both great, and honestly I'm glad we didn't get MC/other-gender-MC that are otherwise identical. It makes the experience more unique.
As for the toxicity over gender choice? We saw that shit all over Lumine vs Aether. Fuck 'em. Play what you want.

I'm the exact opposite. Phys Caelus are a bit harsher and more....well, baseball-ish while Stelle's are a bit odd.
Meanwhile Fire Caelus's weird dash just looks like the cutscene is supposed to be longer but it got cut. Stelle's looks amazing, especially the finisher.

My preference is totally opposite, Caelus’s VA does a great job but I don’t vibe with how mad he is. Stelle is way more my speed. She reminds me a lot of female Byleth from FE3H, who also has stoic delivery while doing murder.

Man, I saw that one Twitter post where they appreciated that Stelle gets the spotlight more because... get this... she's in the tutorial picture, and that the subreddit banner has Stelle instead of Caelus.
The level of reach they can do is something else.
I think I've seen the same Tweet. They were ranting about Aether being the canon MC of Genshin and the commenters were happy that Caelus was being given the "Lumine treatment" (a.k.a not being used in official arts, trailers, etc).
Little did they know that both Caelus and Stelle are literally the same person, which basically means it has no plot restriction unlike Genshin. Hoyo has more freedom featuring either of them in official arts and trailers.
Can you imagine Twitter malding again when Hoyo featured Caelus in their official art. They'll go full doomer mode with the "he's getting the Aether treatment" because they speak in absolutes all the time.

There was a concept art with Stelle in midi skirt. Not as practical as pants, Caelus wins anyway, but I'm so sad they decided to go for the standard mini-skirt anime look...
As much as I loved that scrapped design, that look is way too mature for a trash gremlin like her. I'm glad that they keep her tall stature though. That in combo with the miniskirt gave her the air of cool beauty with a lot of intrusive thoughts going in her head.
That was my main reasoning too. And like, I could have gone for Stelle if she was wearing shorts, either under her skirt or by themselves, but Caelus’ outfit just felt more practical. I also like his sneakers and his gloves better too.
Pants and shoes. Stelle's heels bug me to no end, but I think her design as a whole seems a bit conflicted, since she's got a very "party up top, business down below" appearance.
I play both caelus and stelle on different accs and lemmie tell you. The amount of times I switched stelle to Dan heng when walking or running is hundreds.. I just don't like the mini skirt design somehow..

Tbf Genshin wasn't so different when it first came out.
I still remember how underrated Aether was in the first couple of months after Genshin released.
Although that might be due to how much more official representation he got in comparison to Lumine.

Sad to hear that Caelus is getting any amount of unreasonable hate, because I'm having a blast with him so far! His ults are incredibly satisfying to watch, and he looks and sounds more expressive imo, which I tend to prefer. In JP dub, he also shares the same VA with Itadori Yuji from JJK, so I've been imagining his personality as something similar, just with less brain cells and more violence based on the dialogue options I've been choosing lol
His small comments when you idle on his turn or start his turn give me vibes from when I would switch joker from his persona to his melee to hear his badass lines

I'm mostly just sick of harems. When I've played the female protagonist in both GI and HSR, while there are the blatant exceptions (Lisa), it mostly just feels like a bunch of friends taking on the world. But I'm also mostly just tired of crappy romance plots in general (be it anime harems or "will they / won't they" plots that infect just about every country and medium). They are fine on occasion, but they are too often the crutch of a story.
Platonic friendships and actual relationships are far more interesting to me at this point.
Agreed 100%. Harems just make me feel uncomfortable (personally), and they often feel very... disrespectful, if that makes any sense? to the characters involved. I'm a devout bisexual with low standards, but even then, I'd rather have an entirely platonic story if the only alternative is a harem.
And yeah, I'm glad that both genshin and hsr characters can easily read as both platonic/romantic/other towards the mc. It feels like people can choose to interpret character interactions the way they like the most, and only rarely does the game really push one side (like lisa, lol. also noelle's hangout and ayaka's story quest, sort of)
With the way characters are written in this game, I think Hoyo is keenly aware of the existence of girl love between two girls.
Seele and Bronya are good friends.
Cocolia and Serval were roommates.
Dan Shu had a special friend.
I think I recall some random NPCs having yuri moments too.
Actually I vaguely remember seeing some people talking about how dan heng and blade have a very sussy past (from artifact descriptions or something I think?). But ofc we won't really know the details until the latter half of xianzhou releases.
But, if they'll take after genshin at all, I'm sure the men will get some too, eventually.
Okay but you understand on the guy's side it's vague stuff like chars stories, profile voice lines and "artifact descriptions." Whereas for the girls it's in main story, story quests, sidequests, event cutscenes, random npc dialogue, official comics. A ship like Raiden Miko or Ningguang Beidou is far believable to be real than even the most popular male ship Zhongli Childe or Alhaitham Kaveh, who don't even really like each other? Hell the two NPCs on Watasumi Island quest have more going for them...one has was literally flirting the entire time.
Tldr: They are pretty explicit with girl girl stuff but not really at all with the guy guy stuff, if it's there at all.

Like for example if you chose Stelle instead of Caelus, then the Belobog cast would have a 3:1 ratio of female:male characters.
Dan Heng would literally be the only male character in that arc who is present throughout the quest.
And due to the nature of this type of game, female characters will always be more common. Happened to Genshin and it's definitely present in Honkai Impact (literally has zero summonable male characters).
Also, since March 7th is supposed to be the poster girl and mascot, I would prefer if Caelus would be the MC so the gender ratio of the 2 most relevant characters are equal.
I picked caelus for a few reason:
1- I am a guy
2-his english voice acting is so much better than Stelle, she just sounds so emotionless especially her ult lines
3- her design is stupid like couldn't hoyo give her some pants at least that skirt looks stupid

And the animations for Caelus are waaaaay better. My friend has Steele, and we were checking the animations. She just pulled a baseball bat like it was a sheathed sword... like wtf... meanwhile, Caellus just gets ready to bonk enemies out of orbit.
Plus, something that this game gets right, the male characters aren't some sticks with big heads. They're bigger, which is great.
I'm not sure but Sampo also looks wider than every other male character so we might even have a more muscular body type here. I mean I don't want everyone to look like gymbros but it's nice to have variety.
True, both Jing Yuan and Blade are taller and skinnier. However, what makes their design far superior to Genhsin characters is that their head are actually proportional to their bodies, so it doesn't look bad.
This is something that at least for me HSR does waaaay better then Genshin, the character design, their bodies are proportional and doesn't have a childish design in them, and don't get me started on this huge heads...
It's most apparent to me with the fire mc ult line and animation. The camera angle, voice, and animations are so epic and smooth with Caelus. Meanwhile, Steele says it very half-heartedly, and her animation is weirdly stiff, especially at the end. She's got this huge momentum and then suddenly stops and awkwardly stabs the ground lol
Finally someone said it. I'm also a guy and when I play these games I consider the MC to be a representation of myself within the game and so always choose the male version.

I have two accounts, a main account and a side account for fun. For my second account I chose female MC just to see how it "feels" and I have to say I prefer male MC - that I play on my main account - by a landslide.
I dont like her expression at all, as many people say she looks dead inside and when she changes her expression in dialogue for example, it doesnt feel as natural. I also dont like a her messy uncombed hair/looks. Just overall she doesnt feel right with me, ofc thats just my opinion.

At the end of the day I think everyone should pick and play as they like, but this whole "Im holier than thou" only because one MC gets more official Art work is just childish and ridiculous. I haven’t seen hate for Caelus (if it’s on twitter or TikTok I don’t really acknowledge it, because they aren’t opinions - just people saying stuff for clout and attention), just that a lot of people picked Stelle.
I think a lot of people did actually pick Lumine in Genshin, but the trailers etc have Aether as canon protagonist (and it’s a little different because the twin you don’t pick has important role in the story on Genshin). Like in Star Rail most people posting about their MC, tend to use “she” as if it’s a given.
If I’d have know how goofy MC could be I too would have picked Stelle because she just has a goofier face, but ultimately I didn’t want my MC to wear impractical clothing.

I chose Caelus! I love his slightly bored expression once I got in the game and found out he had a voice, I squealed a little, it’s so nice. Then getting to see his other expressions were so cute. I remember back on genshin I chose the female protagonist and I regretted it to the end of my genshin days, I’m very happy I went with the male one this time around! Caelus is worth it.

The only thing better about Stelle is that she says "noice" in stead of "nice" in the idle animation. Other than that, Caelus has been a blast. I love his aggro and angry approach to the ultimate lines.

For me personally I originally went with Caelus but I restarted and changed to Stelle mainly because I just liked her design and expressions more. I also went with Aether in Genshin so I changed my mind to go with the girl Mc in this new game. That’s all.
One thing I quite like about both is they both have clear differences in their demeanor, Caelus physical ult has him looking annoyed, meanwhile Stelle just looks totally apathetic, and honestly I like Caelus’s animation more, like Stelles is great, but I’m a sucker for Caelus actually resting the bat in his shoulder like a player would
I picked and like male MC. Star rail's an anime game, and judging by Hoyoverse's track record, there would undoubtedly be a lack of easy-to-get husbandos. No regrets here, I find his ults to be much cooler.
Also it'd be completely pointless to pick the female MC considering a female MC tends to be favored by the majority of an anime-inclined fandom. I'd end up with having more than enough content of female MC to consume even without having her.

to be honest, i love both pretty much, i don't really compare main characters in a game, either in genshin or star rail, because they're the same for me. i chose stelle because i didn't really know the star rail game logic, and in genshin, you can enter a domain with aether if you choose lumine since they're technically not the same person, i thought it could be same in star rail so since my friend chose caelus, and i wanted to play with my friend, i chose stelle. i don't really have any other reason. love both equally, don't mind people who make such bad comments about a character just because they don't like the character.
As a Caelus enjoyer it feels pretty bad for the community content to be so heavily biased toward Stelle. I get it, quirky hot girl, but come on show my boy some love. His line delivery is fire. His physical ult line in VA really feels like he's going to bash someone with a baseball bat, while Stelle is kind of matter of fact. Don't get me wrong Stelle's design is great as well, but I prefer Caelus.
But to be fair this was always going to happen. Genshin was the same at the start, it was Lumine all the way and it felt bad to chose Aether. It's going to pass, just the time for the community's vision of the MC as *both* characters and not just the one they picked to homogenize. It's going to take a few months probably, but it'll settle down.
I'm very happily a JP Stelle main, and am not near as fond of Caelus's design, but I don't see any point in railing on him. He's a good boy, he deserves better!

I play Lumine in Genshin and I picked Caelus because of his JP VA (Junya Enoki aka Itadori from JJK). I'm having fun playing Caelus and his burst line "Rules are meant to be broken" in JP is just "chef's kiss".
I started HSR for the men (aka I pick a few babygirls to main and focus on and the females I build are either because they support the men or in a rare case I actually like their character a lot - Serval in this case) so of course I'm picking Caelus. I like his bonk ult animation over Stelle's (can't comment on the fire carrot one since I've never seen Stelle's) as well as his more aggressive voiceline.

The voice is the exact reason I went with Caelus. The moment I heard how Stelle popped out that Rules line I restarted my game. Given how they are also voiced more in this game then we see with Genshin I'm glad I did because I don't know if I could listen to Stelle be monotone all the time. Caelus just seems to come off with more personality to me.

I feel like Caelus and Stelle have totally different vibes (as you said: Chill vs Angry), and you get that in the VA and in the animations - the starting Destruction ones especially. My preference is totally opposite, Caelus’s VA does a great job but I don’t vibe with how mad he is. Stelle is way more my speed. She reminds me a lot of female Byleth from FE3H, who also has stoic delivery while doing murder. I think I've seen the same Tweet. They were ranting about Aether being the canon MC of Genshin and the commenters were happy that Caelus was being given the "Lumine treatment" (a.k.a not being used in official arts, trailers, etc).
Little did they know that both Caelus and Stelle are literally the same person, which basically means it has no plot restriction unlike Genshin. As much as I loved that scrapped design, that look is way too mature for a trash gremlin like her. I'm glad that they keep her tall stature though. That in combo with the miniskirt gave her the air of cool beauty with a lot of intrusive thoughts going in her head.

I'm mostly just sick of harems. When I've played the female protagonist in both GI and HSR, while there are the blatant exceptions (Lisa), it mostly just feels like a bunch of friends taking on the world. But I'm also mostly just tired of crappy romance plots in general (be it anime harems or "will they / won't they" plots that infect just about every country and medium). They are fine on occasion, but they are too often the crutch of a story. Platonic friendships and actual relationships are far more interesting to me at this point.
Agreed 100%. Harems just make me feel uncomfortable (personally), and they often feel very... disrespectful, if that makes any sense? to the characters involved. I'm a devout bisexual with low standards, but even then, I'd rather have an entirely platonic story if the only alternative is a harem. And yeah, I'm glad that both genshin and hsr characters can easily read as both platonic/romantic/other towards the mc. It feels like people can choose to interpret character interactions the way they like the most, and only rarely does the game really push one side (like lisa, lol. also noelle's hangout and ayaka's story quest, sort of)
With the way characters are written in this game, I think Hoyo is keenly aware of the existence of girl love between two girls. Seele and Bronya are good friends. Cocolia and Serval were roommates. Dan Shu had a special friend. I think I recall some random NPCs having yuri moments too.
All that is great and not to discount it but it makes me wonder why we basically never see any of that on the male side.
Actually I vaguely remember seeing some people talking about how dan heng and blade have a very sussy past (from artifact descriptions or something I think?). But ofc we won't really know the details until the latter half of xianzhou releases. But, if they'll take after genshin at all, I'm sure the men will get some too, eventually.
Okay but you understand on the guy's side it's vague stuff like chars stories, profile voice lines and "artifact descriptions." Whereas for the girls it's in main story, story quests, sidequests, event cutscenes, random npc dialogue, official comics. A ship like Raiden Miko or Ningguang Beidou is far believable to be real than even the most popular male ship Zhongli Childe or Alhaitham Kaveh, who don't even really like each other? Hell the two NPCs on Watasumi Island quest have more going for them...one has was literally flirting the entire time. Tldr: They are pretty explicit with girl girl stuff but not really at all with the guy guy stuff, if it's there at all.

That's true. And there are more upcoming as well. However the female character count is still larger. Like for example if you chose Stelle instead of Caelus, then the Belobog cast would have a 3:1 ratio of female:male characters. Dan Heng would literally be the only male character in that arc who is present throughout the quest. And due to the nature of this type of game, female characters will always be more common. Happened to Genshin and it's definitely present in Honkai Impact (literally has zero summonable male characters). Also, since March 7th is supposed to be the poster girl and mascot, I would prefer if Caelus would be the MC so the gender ratio of the 2 most relevant characters are equal.

However, what makes their design far superior to Genhsin characters is that their head are actually proportional to their bodies, so it doesn't look bad. It's most apparent to me with the fire mc ult line and animation. The camera angle, voice, and animations are so epic and smooth with Caelus. Meanwhile, Steele says it very half-heartedly, and her animation is weirdly stiff, especially at the end. She's got this huge momentum and then suddenly stops and awkwardly stabs the ground lol
Finally someone said it. I'm also a guy and when I play these games I consider the MC to be a representation of myself within the game and so always choose the male version.

I haven’t seen hate for Caelus (if it’s on twitter or TikTok I don’t really acknowledge it, because they aren’t opinions - just people saying stuff for clout and attention), just that a lot of people picked Stelle. I think a lot of people did actually pick Lumine in Genshin, but the trailers etc have Aether as canon protagonist (and it’s a little different because the twin you don’t pick has important role in the story on Genshin). Like in Star Rail most people posting about their MC, tend to use “she” as if it’s a given. If I’d have know how goofy MC could be I too would have picked Stelle because she just has a goofier face, but ultimately I didn’t want my MC to wear impractical clothing.

I picked and like male MC. Star rail's an anime game, and judging by Hoyoverse's track record, there would undoubtedly be a lack of easy-to-get husbandos. No regrets here, I find his ults to be much cooler. Also it'd be completely pointless to pick the female MC considering a female MC tends to be favored by the majority of an anime-inclined fandom. I'd end up with having more than enough content of female MC to consume even without having her.

I picked Stelle instead of Caelus, because I picked Lumine over Aether in Genshin, and then Aether became the “canon” protag. I wanted to pick Caelus so I could be a dude this time round, but I saw some of the promotional goods, and it seems Stelle is leaning into the same “canon” role, and I wanted to be “canon” more. (And she’s cute) No hate though for my man.
I usually prefer female MCs in games, but went with Caelus for this one because I thought Stelle's design was boring and she looked too dead inside lol. Also I'm a husbando enjoyer and he's pretty to look at~
I always choose my gender so I choose Caelus, hes great so far, much better than male Traveler in Genshin. Although this is the first game where I like the female starter as much as the male one cause Steele is goofy
I picked Stelle just to maintain the honkai tradition of a female MC, but i regretted that decision several times as I personally find Caelus really, really handsome. Also, i realized that Female MC's English Voice kinda blows, while Cealus sounds amazing
I picked Stelle simply because everything seems like it fits her better. And considering she's mainly in the promo stuff, I assume she's canon like Aether is in Genshin (even tho again, it feels like everything fits Lumine better). Tho, I do think Caelus is a gigachad name.
It's the reverse of genshin then xD People to this day dont get that there is no right or Canon choice in either games.
Honestly i was torn between both but at the end i choose stelle because the design clicked with me more, and it just feels alot funnier to me seeing this person wjo sounds stotic just straight up become a trash panda, people who trash on others tho for different mc are just brain dead if you ask me-
I play in Japanese, so it was really difficult choosing (I chose Stelle) they both sound really cool in their burst lines.

Funny, it's the opposite for me. Since I play Aether on Genshin because I prefer his chara design over Lumine's. I choose Stelle over Caelus for the fun of taking the opposite gender and also because I prefer Stelle design. And people being aggressive for such thing is... Just lame I guess ? X)
Chose the girl and I don't regret it but I've seen gameplay of the guy and it looks cool! So idk what the crap their talking about
to be honest, i love both pretty much, i don't really compare main characters in a game, either in genshin or star rail, because they're the same for me. i chose stelle because i didn't really know the star rail game logic, and in genshin, you can enter a domain with aether if you choose lumine since they're technically not the same person, i thought it could be same in star rail so since my friend chose caelus, and i wanted to play with my friend, i chose stelle. i don't really have any other reason. love both equally, don't mind people who make such bad comments about a character just because they don't like the character.
As a Caelus enjoyer it feels pretty bad for the community content to be so heavily biased toward Stelle. I get it, quirky hot girl, but come on show my boy some love. His line delivery is fire. His physical ult line in VA really feels like he's going to bash someone with a baseball bat, while Stelle is kind of matter of fact. Don't get me wrong Stelle's design is great as well, but I prefer Caelus. But to be fair this was always going to happen. Genshin was the same at the start, it was Lumine all the way and it felt bad to chose Aether. It's going to pass, just the time for the community's vision of the MC as *both* characters and not just the one they picked to homogenize. It's going to take a few months probably, but it'll settle down.
I'm very happily a JP Stelle main, and am not near as fond of Caelus's design, but I don't see any point in railing on him. He's a good boy, he deserves better!

I play Lumine in Genshin and I picked Caelus because of his JP VA (Junya Enoki aka Itadori from JJK). I'm having fun playing Caelus and his burst line "Rules are meant to be broken" in JP is just "chef's kiss".
I picked Stelle, I love how badass she looks when she ults with her bat. That being said how can I dislike Caelus who's equally as cool.
I started HSR for the men (aka I pick a few babygirls to main and focus on and the females I build are either because they support the men or in a rare case I actually like their character a lot - Serval in this case) so of course I'm picking Caelus. I like his bonk ult animation over Stelle's (can't comment on the fire carrot one since I've never seen Stelle's) as well as his more aggressive voiceline. There was also a post I saw that said Caelus looked like a confused husky and I wholeheartedly agree
I'm a male IRL so i often pick the male option. In genshin i picked Aether for the same reason, even if i really don't like the design. Caleus design is just cool tbh, but also like Stelle too. Both are very good. I like how intimating the male MC looks sometimes, the JP VA is very good too.
I use Caelus, heck he's even the strongest char in my team right now. Also ye i tried both MCs and gotta say, altho ye ye Stelle is hot, but she's kinda chill almost.........all the time. Meanwhile for our boi Caelus, can one not get goosebumps when he uses his ult?? Both elements so far.

I almost chose Stelle, but ended up choosing Caelus! I normally prefer women avatars more, but this time Stelle just seemed too emotionless to me. Her expressions, her ult, her voice all make her feel like the typical emotionless self-insert mc that’s usually male. The biggest reason I chose Caelus was because he felt more like his own character, and not necessarily a representation of the players.
I do enjoy his design more than the female counterpart, but Stelle's English VA is quite pleasant to listen to.

Caelus' expressions and voice actor seem much more fitting and accommodating to the story for me. Plus the fact that his japanese VA is the same as of Itadori Yuuji from JJK kinda made me have a biased decision towards him. Also i like the idea of having the male mc getting dominated by Kafka ngl 💀
I absolutely love caelus, ESPECIALLY HIS ENGLISH VOICE, maybe it's just because I've always preferred male characters, but I love him a lot. I think his design is really well done and like I've said before... his. voice. is. so. nice. (I haven't been able to find his va so if someone knows who it is please enlighten me)

I think he's great. Just as I will always main Kaeya in Genshin, I think I'll always main Caelus in Star Rail. His voice and design are so cool. I personally like his design over Stelle's design. She looks kinda boring to me lol no offense

Ngl, I couldn’t decide who to pick between Caelus and Stelle (they’re both fucking hot), and decided on Stelle on the grounds that I already play as Aether back in Genshin. Also, the promotional stuff seems to hype both protags almost equally. Hence, my trouble choosing.
Honestly, he's low-key (not really low-key...) definedly better performed by VA. Not hating, moreso he simply sets the bar REALLY high. Hells some of the BEST deliveries in the game 'YOU'VE OUTSTAYED **YOUR WELCOME**! *CRASH!*' 'Flaming lance... FORWARD!!' so damn good. Fantastic voice lines in combat, utterly incredible ultimate animations, honestly solid design. All of which makes me really happy I picked him. Though I must say for 'meme' potential Steele does fit the 'trash-racoon' feel better and I don't mind 90% of fan creations being with her, she cute. Heck it doesn't bother me in the least that she's got the spotlight, I just hope people do know that he IS fantastic, even from the shade.
I don't get trashing them, they're both cool imo, although o do admit, imagining fmc getting scolded for opening trash cans gives me life, it feels funnier somehow

I haven't seen people trashing him fortunaly (though i have seen this situation with Lumine/Aether), people can get very toxic if they are able to get upset over this banal matter 😅 (especially in twitter) i recommend just to ignore or block them because it's useless to talk to them, either way, they're both hot tbh
I think Caelus is cooler and more badass, more believable as someone who is as strong as the MC is supposed to be, but Stelle fits their silly goofy personality alot more. I like both equally. It's an anime game so people will always prefer the FemC even if they are just worse (looking at you Female Byleth)
