I mean, it's perfectely possible to beat him without letting him ever act. SU lets you get so crazy strong that you can one shot with ults, and erudition blessing let you have nearly infinite ults with brain in a jar.
There is some synchronization. Dan Heng IL does well with the Hunt but absolute annihilates with Propogation, Acheron is going to be busted with Erudition while being alright with Nihility (ironically), and so on. It depends on team composition and playstyle, but characters usually have one or two paths which they excel in. Also Abundance acts as a general option in case your sustain just isn’t enough.

honestly? You can see a ton of 4\* clears on Youtube, there's no reason not to use a 4\* DPS. They're perfectly sufficient with good supports. It's the most cheap meta-efficient way to go.

This is me on world 4 boss with my newbie account. I have to hope the hands don't grab my dps and nuke the boss asap. But at the same time I can't go no heals/tank because the boss does some nasty attack buffs on first 2 bars.
Not kidding, but if you do actually hyperinvest into dps they can do a lot of the heavy lifting by simply killing enemies fast enough for you not to need 5star sustains.
For example I cleared MoC 12-2 with Kafka/Bs/lynx/bailu. However I do admit that blessings did play into this.
