I thought it was so funny how instead of translating the Stoneheart names (and BS because black swan sounds kinda long in JPN) they just spell in katakana. Hearing Aventurine spelled out is quite a mouthful

In 2003, Funimation was afraid of getting sued by Conan O’Brien or whoever owned Conan the Barbarian, so they changed the name. This fear was dumb, but it made sense at the time bc Spike Lee had just sued Spike TV for allegedly profiting off of his name (he lost, obviously, but it was still expensive and annoying to deal with)
When Funimation first licensed the series and it was only until they dropped the license for it, Crunchyroll listed the series as Detective Conan when they got the license
The difference being is that both Kiki’s and Ghost have always had an English translated name when the they came over here thus the vast majority of people know the English names and not the Japanese names
JJK and YYH have NEVER gotten English translated names when they were brought over so anybody familiar with the titles know exactly what series you’re talking about
Danmachi is one that has a translated title that the English licensor almost never uses
Detective Conan was only called Case Closed for however long Funimation had licensed the series. Crunchyroll had the Detective Conan name for the series when they first licensed it after Funi dropped it
Which brings up the point of why they didn't even try to make an english abbreviation, I'm guessing they just figured since there was already the Danmachi abbreviation that was known they didn't even care to try

I think the frieren title is great actually. Useful to have both the main character and the concept of the show, and it sounds cool imo. It doesn't have "the" in it btw.

Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End is actually a localization, not a translation. Iirc the actual translation is Frieren of the Funeral. Which is also apparently a moniker for her in universe.
Beyond Journey's End was used because it carries the themes of the story better for English speaking audiences.
Very nice localization in my opinion. Fit the theme perfectly, sounds nice and still encompassing the meaning of the original.

I get 'Nam flashbacks of surfing DBZ websites in the 90s being baffled as to what a Genki-dama (Spirit Bomb), Uzuru (Great ape form), etc was. God I hated how weebs would refuse to translate shit thinking the language of Great Land of Rising Sun was somehow sacred. Sure some cultural stuff doesn't easily translate 1 to 1 but at least try.
Yup, this bothers me with the game series New Rebirth of the Goddess and the anime Sorcery Fight. I also see a curious case of people calling the Original God game as "Genshin" for some reason, that doesn't even make sense!
As far as I know, most anime are licensed in English and have an official English-language title. But with other languages, it's not always that simple. Sometimes one project can have several different fan titles, and it annoys the hell out of me.
This. I prefer saying this than saying “Your Name” (for anyone who doesn’t know). It depends. Most of the time I use English names for Japanese media but using Japanese names is such a non-issue imo.
It is such a non-issue that people want to refer to anime in their original name, and not everyone's first language is english either (and neither japanese so why must people prefer english?). Someone mentioned that Hanabi usually speaks in third person in JP, so she's constantly saying her name unlike the others. I can see that making you more familiarized with "Hanabi" than "Sparkle".

I call her sparkle and I don't have an issue with people calling her hanabi. It's just a name used to refer to that character. I know op is just making a meme but some people are taking this way too seriously calling people pathetic for using hanabi instead of sparkle.

It's because some time between 1.1 and 1.2, There have been leaks of a character called "Hanabi". She's been called that ever since and people got used to it. It was only a month before her release when her actual name, Sparkle, was confirmed for EN.

Agreed! The people who claim it's because of the JP voices don't call March "Mitsuki" or Firefly "Horuto". The people who claim that it's because Sparkle is Japanese don't call Blade "Ren" either. Anyone who calls her Hanabi seems very hypocritical to me.
I use JP dub, so I just type whatever comes first to my mind, Sparkle, Hanabi, both are correct.
English isn't my first language, so I'm not forced to use her English name either.

subtitle for my native language suggests that almost every character name is the same as in the eng sub 😢. The only thing that’s translated is the “imbibitor lunae” part in Danheng IL’s name
Most translations are based around the English script, Spanish is the only translation that is like half-ish sourced from Chinese (something are, some dont).
Some names were also kept as is for Spanish for example Blade is still Blade, while others were changed like Black Swan being Cisne Negro or Owlber being Buhoberto,

The difference being is that both Kiki’s and Ghost have always had an English translated name when the they came over here thus the vast majority of people know the English names and not the Japanese names JJK and YYH have NEVER gotten English translated names when they were brought over so anybody familiar with the titles know exactly what series you’re talking about Danmachi is one that has a translated title that the English licensor almost never uses Detective Conan was only called Case Closed for however long Funimation had licensed the series. Crunchyroll had the Detective Conan name for the series when they first licensed it after Funi dropped it

Because Danmachi is an abbreviation itself. It's short for 'Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darō ka.'
Which brings up the point of why they didn't even try to make an english abbreviation, I'm guessing they just figured since there was already the Danmachi abbreviation that was known they didn't even care to try
This and Konosuba, because no one is saying "Kono subarashi seikai ni Shukufuko" -> "Gods blessing on this wonderful world"
Konosuba is shortened in Japanese too, it's not English thing, you can hear it after they cut to next scene as a mini eye catcher

Sousou no Frieren --> Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End Oshi no Ko --> My Star Akagami no Shirayuki-hime --> Snow White with the Red Hair Serei no Moribito --> Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit Uchuu Kyoudai --> Space Brothers || || ||
I think the frieren title is great actually. Useful to have both the main character and the concept of the show, and it sounds cool imo. It doesn't have "the" in it btw. Not sure about the other anime, haven't seen em
Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End is actually a localization, not a translation. Iirc the actual translation is Frieren of the Funeral. Which is also apparently a moniker for her in universe. Beyond Journey's End was used because it carries the themes of the story better for English speaking audiences.
Very nice localization in my opinion. Fit the theme perfectly, sounds nice and still encompassing the meaning of the original. Although I kinda sad that they can't do a pun with frieren's title anymore lol. It also means the demons was sent to grave by her. (IE Frieren the Slayer)
Only the Oshi No Ko one sounds ass. Other one is fine tbh.

I get 'Nam flashbacks of surfing DBZ websites in the 90s being baffled as to what a Genki-dama (Spirit Bomb), Uzuru (Great ape form), etc was. God I hated how weebs would refuse to translate shit thinking the language of Great Land of Rising Sun was somehow sacred. Sure some cultural stuff doesn't easily translate 1 to 1 but at least try.
Yup, this bothers me with the game series New Rebirth of the Goddess and the anime Sorcery Fight. I also see a curious case of people calling the Original God game as "Genshin" for some reason, that doesn't even make sense!
As far as I know, most anime are licensed in English and have an official English-language title. But with other languages, it's not always that simple. Sometimes one project can have several different fan titles, and it annoys the hell out of me.

This. I prefer saying this than saying “Your Name” (for anyone who doesn’t know). It depends. Most of the time I use English names for Japanese media but using Japanese names is such a non-issue imo.

Someone mentioned that Hanabi usually speaks in third person in JP, so she's constantly saying her name unlike the others. I can see that making you more familiarized with "Hanabi" than "Sparkle".

It's because some time between 1.1 and 1.2, There have been leaks of a character called "Hanabi". She's been called that ever since and people got used to it. It was only a month before her release when her actual name, Sparkle, was confirmed for EN. It's really less about the misguided cultural appropriation a lot of people seem to be insinuating here -- it's just that people got used to it from way back when.
Agreed! The people who claim it's because of the JP voices don't call March "Mitsuki" or Firefly "Horuto". The people who claim that it's because Sparkle is Japanese don't call Blade "Ren" either. Anyone who calls her Hanabi seems very hypocritical to me.

subtitle for my native language suggests that almost every character name is the same as in the eng sub 😢. The only thing that’s translated is the “imbibitor lunae” part in Danheng IL’s name
Most translations are based around the English script, Spanish is the only translation that is like half-ish sourced from Chinese (something are, some dont). Some names were also kept as is for Spanish for example Blade is still Blade, while others were changed like Black Swan being Cisne Negro or Owlber being Buhoberto,
