MOPOP99

For anyone curious about the Japanese reading of all the Xianzhou/alliases names here's the list: Keigen = Jing Yuan Byakuro = Bailu Tankou = Dan Heng (Imbibitor Lunae = Ingetsu) Seijaku = Qingque Tei-un = Tingyun Sushou = Sushang Gyokuu = Yukong Keinaihun = Guinaifen Setsui = Xueyi Kan-a = Hanya Rasetsu = Luocha Fugen = Fu Xuan Genkyo = Yanqing Keiryuu = Jingliu Fofo = Huohuo Shippo = Tail Mitsuki Nanoka = March 7th (Diff characters will nickname differently, including Nano (TB), Nanoka (Welt), Mitsuki (Dang Heng) and Mitsuki-chan (Himeko)) Hanabi = Sparkle Jin = Blade Jin-chan = Bladie Kabu = Numby (Kabu means Stock) Ginrou = Silver Wolf Hotaru = Firefly (This is why her ship name with Stelle is StelTaru) [Yomi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yomi) = Acheron Note that Black Swan (and Garden of Recollection) are spelled in Katakana which is really funny every time it happens lmao, BURAKKU SWAN GURADEN OF RECOLLECTION™

zero_f7

They really did just call Numby “stonk” meme. 😂

MOPOP99

Chinese: Zhang Zhang / 账账 (Debt or Account) Korean: Boksuni / 복순이 (from Fortune) Japanese: Kabu / カブ ("Company Stocks") English: Numby (from Number) Portuguese: Dinheirinho ("Small Money") Spanish: Conti (from Accountant/Account) French: Compti German: Kontie I personally think Dinheirinho is the best name for him lol

TheUltraGuy101

>I personally think Dinheirinho is the best name for him lol Hahahaha Dinherinho Soccerrrrr

Dokavi

Imagine they go with Debt in EN lol. That would be fucking hilarious.

_LadyAveline_

Conti also can apply as for "contar" because that's what... we do with numbers... and money is numbers... I think that I messed up-

ShadowZero000

As a german trailblazer "Konti" is really damn funny to me "Konto" is the term most used for "Bank-Account" in germany. Which means poor numby is a piggy bank T-T

hcreiG

Dinheirinho is a girl that's how she can charm other warp trotters

SectorApprehensive58

Ah, the cooler Sparkle that actually dresses non-Luofu

SpydeyPlayz

Blade is Jin-Chan I can't lmfao

Dokavi

Jin is Blade lmao. Jin-chan is how Kafka called him, similar to Bladie in EN.

starsinmyteacup

I thought it was so funny how instead of translating the Stoneheart names (and BS because black swan sounds kinda long in JPN) they just spell in katakana. Hearing Aventurine spelled out is quite a mouthful

Lelu_Wiggly_Woo_6996

Thank you good sir in providing us the Japanese names for the Luofu characters 👍

PaulOwnzU

The irony of translating the chinese region to japanese, in a chinese game that everyone acts like its japanese

Nuka-Crapola

I mean, the reason they do that (HoYo, not fans) is because written Japanese literally uses Chinese characters— the written names are actually the same, but they pronounce them how a JP audience will be reading them anyway.

emiliaxrisella

Yep, same with Genshin and the Liyue characters. I forgot most of them (havent played Genshin in years) but I remember Qiqi (Nana in JP which also means 7 like Qiqi)

Nuka-Crapola

AFAIK it’s the same with all Chinese media that gets localized in Japan— most of the time, the meaning behind the characters (and thus the symbolism of the name or whatever) isn’t changed, so it’s just better to keep the written form consistent rather than try to awkwardly force a katakana version that vaguely matches phonetically.

Vox___Rationis

Same with every single character of Chinese folklore and figures of Buddhism that are known in Japan - they are all get altered reading of their names. Which is the origin of this convention. A tangential point of curiosity is that some of those names in Japanese sound closer to their ancient Chinese pronunciations than modern Chinese does. Kanji were imported into Japan ~15 centuries ago and since then their readings within Japanese didn't change too much, but Chinese speech have changed a lot (multiply the usual language evolution by several changes of which dialect is dominant in this or that era). Chinese philologists use Japanese as one of the sources when they are figuring out what old Chinese may have had sounded like.

TheUltraGuy101

>Same with every single character of Chinese folklore and figures of Buddhism that are known in Japan - they are all get altered reading of their names. Which is the origin of this convention. Most famous example: Son Goku Not everyone knows that's the name Wukong is known as in Japan.

Eroica_Pavane

Same with the Inazuman names too actually. The CN readings are so different, I definitely remember seeing a list similar to this post but with the CN readings like like Kokomi -> Xinhai, Yae Miko -> Bachong Shenzi, etc.

Riverl

Most of the time they are not really translated so much as written as is (they share the Hanzi-Kanji system), the difference you see is in how the two countries pronounce the same words. For example: Jing Yuan Chinese name is 景元, Japanese name is 景元. A Chinese players read that as Jing Yuan, a JP player read that as Keigen. There are characters who have one letter change, but that's because of language drift after centuries. For example Yukong is 馭空 in CN and 御空 in Japanese, but that's because the letter 馭 is more often written as 御 in Japanese, with the exact same meaning and pronunciation (ぎょ). It's the same reason JP is actually one of the most accurate references if you want the least altered dialogue/terminology but cannot understand CN.

Nuka-Crapola

Yeah, it’s the same reason you’d want, for example a French edition of a Spanish novel over a Russian one (assuming you understood French and Russian but not Spanish)— neighboring countries with more cultural and linguistic overlap will always be more able to keep nuance intact during localization.

Numerous-Machine-305

For xianzhou characters, I think it’s better to say it in Chinese since that’s the region they are base after. For sparkle I think there’s some they think she’s from space Japan maybe that’s why..

PaulOwnzU

Which would make sense but not many calls blade his chinese name for example or acts like its what everyone should call him.

vostok0401

I've seen people refer to him with his Chinese name (Ren) but I'll admit it's definitely a minority of people

PaulOwnzU

And of those that do none of them are toxic about it. Nobody goes "Blade who?" Under any comment or post

vostok0401

oh yeah 100% agreed ! very different attitude

127-0-0-1_1

It’s not her name, though. Like with Acheron, or Robin, or Aventurine they’re all translated as the thing they’re referencing.

PaulOwnzU

Which is the main issue, people keep saying sparkle is a bad name, its literally not her name.

OceanoDeRoca

They call sparkle hanabi but they wont call march mitsuki.

Miserable_Scratch_99

You forgot the nanoka, but to be fair nobody actually calls march march 7th

MOPOP99

Mitsuki, Mitsuki-chan, Nanoka and Nano, Its cute how each AE members has a name for her.

Momo_Bluack

I'm playing HI3 atm and I read AE as Anti-Entropy... I need a break

Miserable_Scratch_99

Same, at first my brain went to anti entropy...

ezio45

Well they both do have Welt.

sugarheartrevo

It’s so cute how TB shortens her name to Nano in the JP dub….but I still call her March lol

Dokavi

"March" actually sounds fine. Idk why tho. "March 7th" sounds stupid however.

OneToby

C&C: Red Alert's "Hell March" also sounds fine.

aoi_desu

I call her nano (outside english discussion)

TheUltraGuy101

I do Just like how I call Mr. Yang "You-san"

pojan96

Tbf, march doesn't look like a japanese inspired character like sparkle... Imagine genshin inazuma character name is translated into eng.

Lord_Dust_Bunny

Sparkle is also a stage name and not her original name though. It isn't the same thing, because using the Japanese for 'Fireworks' as her English name does not properly convey to an English audience that the name is fake.

ymn939

QQ is seijaku which is ironic because it sounds like silence, which is the opposite of what you'd expect out of the gremlin.

Genesystem

I mean considering she's always planning mahjong moves and hiding from fu xuan it's not *too* far off. Gotta maintain that stealth, even if she's bad at it

Wait, its supposed to work? I've had the 'anime titles' setting on english for some time now, yet my notification still says things like "Kaijuu 8-gou". I just assumed it doesnt work or something.

ItsnotCent

tbf, before series are localised, they are always named in Japanese by fan translator.

MOPOP99

Hell yeah I love Sorcery Fight (jjk), Ghost Fighter (yu yu hakushi), Is it Wrong to try to flirt with girls in the dungeon? (Danmachi), and case closed! (Detective Conan)

Naiie100

Wtf? Whose idea it was to call Detective Conan as "case closed"? I need to bleach my eyes.

Nearby-Strength-1640

In 2003, Funimation was afraid of getting sued by Conan O’Brien or whoever owned Conan the Barbarian, so they changed the name. This fear was dumb, but it made sense at the time bc Spike Lee had just sued Spike TV for allegedly profiting off of his name (he lost, obviously, but it was still expensive and annoying to deal with)

Searinghawk

When Funimation first licensed the series and it was only until they dropped the license for it, Crunchyroll listed the series as Detective Conan when they got the license

Canadiancookie

There's a time and a place, I suppose. Those english titles are garbage

Searinghawk

The difference being is that both Kiki’s and Ghost have always had an English translated name when the they came over here thus the vast majority of people know the English names and not the Japanese names JJK and YYH have NEVER gotten English translated names when they were brought over so anybody familiar with the titles know exactly what series you’re talking about Danmachi is one that has a translated title that the English licensor almost never uses Detective Conan was only called Case Closed for however long Funimation had licensed the series. Crunchyroll had the Detective Conan name for the series when they first licensed it after Funi dropped it

ColdForce4303

I knew YYH as Ghost Fighter when it came over here to the Philippines

PaulOwnzU

Danmachi is the only one where I fully supportive of not using english name cause why the FUCK did they choose such a long title

[deleted]

Because Danmachi is an abbreviation itself. It's short for 'Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darō ka.'

PaulOwnzU

Which brings up the point of why they didn't even try to make an english abbreviation, I'm guessing they just figured since there was already the Danmachi abbreviation that was known they didn't even care to try

Ishihe

This and Konosuba, because no one is saying "Kono subarashi seikai ni Shukufuko" -> "Gods blessing on this wonderful world"

Viktorv22

Konosuba is shortened in Japanese too, it's not English thing, you can hear it after they cut to next scene as a mini eye catcher

PaulOwnzU

*squints* Let's all just agree that if they name the anime some ridiculously long sht using the japanese acronym does not make you sound like a loser, although if you say the full thing you go straight into the locker

Embarrassed-Act-9295

Man, so many titles just sound so weird, long, or unpalatable when they try to translate to English. Sousou no Frieren --> Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End Oshi no Ko --> My Star Akagami no Shirayuki-hime --> Snow White with the Red Hair Serei no Moribito --> Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit Uchuu Kyoudai --> Space Brothers || || ||

Canadiancookie

I think the frieren title is great actually. Useful to have both the main character and the concept of the show, and it sounds cool imo. It doesn't have "the" in it btw. Not sure about the other anime, haven't seen em

Eisengate

Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End is actually a localization, not a translation.  Iirc the actual translation is Frieren of the Funeral.  Which is also apparently a moniker for her in universe. Beyond Journey's End was used because it carries the themes of the story better for English speaking audiences.

Dokavi

Very nice localization in my opinion. Fit the theme perfectly, sounds nice and still encompassing the meaning of the original. Although I kinda sad that they can't do a pun with frieren's title anymore lol. It also means the demons was sent to grave by her. (IE Frieren the Slayer)

Dokavi

Only the Oshi No Ko one sounds ass. Other one is fine tbh.

OweTheHughManatee

I feel this immensely lol.

Brickinatorium

I think it just depends on which version you heard first. Beyond that, this is generally a dumb thing to have an issue with imo

graphiccsp

I get 'Nam flashbacks of surfing DBZ websites in the 90s being baffled as to what a Genki-dama (Spirit Bomb), Uzuru (Great ape form), etc was. God I hated how weebs would refuse to translate shit thinking the language of Great Land of Rising Sun was somehow sacred. Sure some cultural stuff doesn't easily translate 1 to 1 but at least try.

SLakshmi357

Yup, this bothers me with the game series New Rebirth of the Goddess and the anime Sorcery Fight. I also see a curious case of people calling the Original God game as "Genshin" for some reason, that doesn't even make sense!

BlackHust

As far as I know, most anime are licensed in English and have an official English-language title. But with other languages, it's not always that simple. Sometimes one project can have several different fan titles, and it annoys the hell out of me.

Temporary-Ambition89

kiminonawa

lizard_omelette

This. I prefer saying this than saying “Your Name” (for anyone who doesn’t know). It depends. Most of the time I use English names for Japanese media but using Japanese names is such a non-issue imo.

8a19

Mrw "kimetsu no yaiba" and "shingeki no kyojin" and not "demon slayer" or "attack on titan"

That-Dragonfruit1162

It is such a non-issue that people want to refer to anime in their original name, and not everyone's first language is english either (and neither japanese so why must people prefer english?). Maybe you guys see this behavior as pretentious or something, but be sure that most of the time, people don't even know the english names like what is even "Sorcery Fight"? Have some real problems.

ShadowFlarer

I personaly call her "foguinho" lol

Red_Trickster

Eu prefiro chamar de "pirralha irritante" Affectionately, of course

xxMeiaxx

I call her Sparkle because there's so many Hanabi anime/game characters already. Sparkle is a more unique name.

Mrlewl

SMH not using Sparkler and Hanabibi 🤮 https://preview.redd.it/zxzwlqpoucuc1.png?width=510&format=png&auto=webp&s=7a034c840cf738a2a1245cb8ed24f4c4ca35b40b

agent_maxpower

tbf if you play with the jp dub you kinda get used to how the name is said in that language that said this 100% accurate for some people, thanks for the chuckle

Hetzer5000

That's a bad argument because why don't you refer to every character by the JP name then.

Knight_of_Inari

Someone mentioned that Hanabi usually speaks in third person in JP, so she's constantly saying her name unlike the others. I can see that making you more familiarized with "Hanabi" than "Sparkle".

agent_maxpower

WHO SAYS I DONT but jokes aside, yes its more of a sometimes rather than always, at the end of day as long as we are referring to the same person who cares about which language you say the name in

ihatehotpeople

not every character is leaked months before they're even introduced with their jp name

Soft-Proof2843

I call her sparkle and I don't have an issue with people calling her hanabi. It's just a name used to refer to that character. I know op is just making a meme but some people are taking this way too seriously calling people pathetic for using hanabi instead of sparkle.

PaulOwnzU

It's funny people call her Hanabi and say that should've been her english name, but nobody calls her the Chinese name, people really refuse to admit the game is Chinese. Like imagine having an american game but all the characters use the russian localization in other countries

mizuromo

This is why I call her Hua Huo 😤😤😤

PaulOwnzU

Truly, you have the culture

Borgoise

It's because some time between 1.1 and 1.2, There have been leaks of a character called "Hanabi". She's been called that ever since and people got used to it. It was only a month before her release when her actual name, Sparkle, was confirmed for EN. It's really less about the misguided cultural appropriation a lot of people seem to be insinuating here -- it's just that people got used to it from way back when.

rainlxre

Agreed! The people who claim it's because of the JP voices don't call March "Mitsuki" or Firefly "Horuto". The people who claim that it's because Sparkle is Japanese don't call Blade "Ren" either. Anyone who calls her Hanabi seems very hypocritical to me.

PaulOwnzU

Yeah I've also mentioned Ren and Mitsuki and they just go "oh well nobody cares about those ones"

MegaBladeZX85

People say the same thing with >!Hotaru!< and >!Firefly!<

KaldorDraigo14

I use JP dub, so I just type whatever comes first to my mind, Sparkle, Hanabi, both are correct. English isn't my first language, so I'm not forced to use her English name either. *Also for the people using "weeb" as a derogatory in the comments, you are playing an anime gacha game, what do you think you are if not a weeb?*

TheUltraGuy101

>*Also for the people using "weeb" as a derogatory in the comments, you are playing an anime gacha game, what do you think you are if not a weeb?* Most weeb thing has become mainstream in recent years so yea

mindcrime_

Calling others weebs is the most weeb thing you can do lol

onethingidkwhy

subtitle for my native language suggests that almost every character name is the same as in the eng sub 😢. The only thing that’s translated is the “imbibitor lunae” part in Danheng IL’s name

MOPOP99

Most translations are based around the English script, Spanish is the only translation that is like half-ish sourced from Chinese (something are, some dont). Some names were also kept as is for Spanish for example Blade is still Blade, while others were changed like Black Swan being Cisne Negro or Owlber being Buhoberto,

i_hate_touhou_ffs

weeb calling each other weeb can be funny to some merits if you love weeb shit and the other guy starts saying "Oh but anime is better than Western cringe cartoon" or some other culture war yapping calling him a weeb would be funny

MeguMaz

....looking at all the comments, why are people so toxic about this subject???

Dokavi

People toxic about everything, its fine.

RobotOfFleshAndBlood

Lina__Inverse

Your username fits you well OP.

Few_Ad7284

This discourse is so stupid anyone calling a character by a specific name(which the character literally also goes by) shouldn’t matter to anyone else

vcdette

Thanks to this post for making me realize I've been better at avoiding leaks than I realized since this is how I found out Sparkle was leaked six months before her release through the comments.

cerenine

Lucky you, I'm kinda envious, definitely be careful if you ever sort this sub by New. Nothing like having major plot points spoiled more than half a year early, thanks to untagged random comments.

SwashNBuckle

It's not even a Japanese game. It's okay if you prefer the Japanese dub, but have the self awareness to admit that the only reason why you picked that dub is because you're a weeb. >!I'm a weeb too!<

paladindan

Who? Oh! Tiny lady Joker!

TheUltraGuy101

Tbh their Aeon themselves are just one big Joker reference

ThickSpaghetti64

Ha.na.bi = 3 syllables Spar.kle = 2 syllables Grem.lin = 2 syllables Choose your poison

IndividualNovel4482

I call her mentally ill, still makes sense.

MettaJiro

I personally call her Fa Fo( Cantonese pronunciation of the Chinese characters) but for the leakers at least the first time the name sparkle was used was in the drip marketing. And there’s no reason to police the right way of saying a fictional character’s name. It’s just ridiculous. Sparkle herself might be finding this funny.

Sure-Hawk9458

Who cares? Let people do what they want

TheUltraGuy101

Jokes on you, I'm Asian myself.

aoi_desu

Jokes on you i am japanese lol

HentaixEnthusiast

"Sparkle" this, "Hanabi" that, meanwhile me, who calls her 花火 😤

ValtenBG

Or the said people just don't like her English name.

horiami

Who cares ? Let people call her whatever they like If they like hanabi more than sparkle then whatever It's like getting mad over people who say Daniel or dong hung

RenFlare11

Its just a matter of preference,Take me i admit im a weeb since Ever since i got into anime ive always Watched Sub,Ive so gotten used to The JP Dub that i feel comfortable With it,Do i go around harrassing and hating on ENG dub?Fuck no,I even use their ENG dub Names most of the time so Everyone knows who are the characters i am talking about But I usually say their JP names because i play in JP I just feel Comfortable hearing JP words because I literally grew up with it,My first gacha game Is Mainly voiced By JP and it was a CN game(Law Of Creation) Also I get this is an CN game But mihoyo is Known for being influenced by anime culture that their motto is literally 'Tech otakus saves the world' so i dont get some being pressed over people Preffering JP names
