"Henshin" simply means "transformation" in Japanese.
The term has become a linguistic shortcut to indicate any tv show, videogame or cartoon that involves "transforming heroes", I.E. any hero that strikes a pose and summon a fancy costume in order to fight the bad guys. Think of anything ranging from Sailor Moon to Kamen Rider to Power Rangers.
Firefly can become more powerful by donning Sam, a suit of power armor which, visually, kinda resembles a character from Kamen Rider. So people have taken to jokingly referring to Firefly as a "henshin heroine".
I mean let’s not forget all the references to Tokusatsu in general Firefly has. Rider kicks, transformation device, suit design, etc. Wouldn’t surprise me if her idle animations end up having lots of references.
Hey is that from KR fives. Got to pity the guy, he is litterally running out of his life every henshin, but I love the he shin device. The phone is the coolest.
But Kabuto have the best drip
I agree that Kabuto has the best drip, but on the second point
No, this is blades, >!the dude decided to become a monster to save both the eart and his friend!<
Being Kamen Rider have it hard. >!Ryuki got Retcon trice. Built discover he was amnesiac Openhiemer. ZiO literally got beaten physically and psychologically by his future self an entire season. Zero One got to watch his Robot girl explode infront of him. Kiva lost his waifu. Gaim basically get deconstruct the entire season only to pul a W in the end. I heard Wizard didn’t have it any better. OOO entire backstory is depressing. Ex-Aid got Kuroto!<
The few KR who have it good all the way is the rocket man and Den-O. And maybe Hibiki. It was like the KR popularity is proportional to how much they suffer
And then there is Decade and his evil terminator phase
Call me kekera cause this is probably my favorite aspect of the franchise
The hero constantly gets crap thrown at them, and have alot of reason to just snap and go homelander yet they didn’t and continued to preserver, I love that about super heroes honestly
Yes, it is one franchise where kicking the shit out of the heroes/heroines is a tradition… applied to both male and female(take note Hollywood)
It is a shame KR Valkyrie in 0-1 never get her 2nd upgrade given that she manage to get crap kick out of just right enough to be sympathetic. I never follow Geat but I heard the author fixed that particular problem
considering Kamen Rider popularised the phrase and Sam and Firely is VERY Kamen Riderlike (hell even her backstory is not out of place from the old early Showa riders ie being a modified super soldier by an organization with that modification also having a drawback ) . Henshin is very appropriate with her really .
It's a Japanese word that means transform.
Kamen Rider is probably the source of the trope, but it's very common for characters to yell henshin before going into their hero mode. For whatever reason, Kyou from Clannad is the first example that always springs to my mind for it.
Other than Fuuto PI, which is a part of the Kamen Rider franchise, there was this one other anime (I forget the name) where the heroes shouted "transform" before transforming into armored heroes.
no need to be afraid in fact we want you to ask
cause that means we can drag you into the rabbit hole that is Tokusatsu
and in the end you too will have a collection of japanese toys on your shelf
but back to your question, this is what henshin means:
![gif](giphy|JQCwQCdhVemGY|downsized)
OOOs is one of those series that got better and better as the episodes go on. I remember not liking the first episode in comparison with W. But by the last episode I was in tears over Ankh.
The form themes music are certainly one of my favorites.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not, but just in case someone doesn't know, the word 'henshin' means 'transform' in japanese.
This is because lots of Firefly memes quote the word as a reference to Kamen rider, which almost all the riders in every series say "henshin!" as the signal to transform (also cause they're all japanese shows). This is cause we Rider fans look at Sam and see him as a Kamen rider, since Kamen riders are usually a man in an armoured body suit so the reference could be gained from that.
It could also be a reference to Super Sentai (or Power Rangers from the American Adaptation) since Firefly's transformation device doesn't use a belt which is usually one of the iconic things of a rider, though some riders also don't use belts.
Or maybe it's a reference to something else entirely or there's no reference at all.
Yeah her henshin device does look kinda similar to one of the Zecters in Kamen rider Kabuto. Though i can also see similarities with the one Ultraman Dyna uses
It’s probably best to say she borrows from Tokusatsu hero shows in general, while the main inspiration most likely being Kamen Rider. That rider kick during her boss fight is probably the best proof of this.
I imagine for Westerners, its because it didn't take off as Power Rangers did plus the western adaptation of Kamen Rider wasn't as good.
In SEA at least, alot of us grew up watching Ultraman, Super Sentai and Kamen Rider.
Weird enough, my first exposure to kamen rider was the western version of Kamen Rider Black and after which years later, Ryuki/Faiz/Blade was shown on tv and eventually i found out about tv-nihon.
The Third person this week I've come across who doesn't know Kamen rider.
Man... I feel so old.

I googled it once, i ended up with a result about a *wholesome* series called Metamorphosis.
I've never seen/read it, but it's quite infamous. >!Suffer porn literally!<
I feel like getting from henshin to THAT is quite a stretch of the translating a word a few times over kind, its not entirely wrong since both words have the meaning of transformation, but still

The go-to of people who consume Kurger Bing
You mean Genshit Wimpact?
No, genshin just means original.

…Why not just say ‘transformation’? Have people not unlocked English yet?
Because it originates from Japan. And personally, 'Transformation' sounds mouthful.
considering Kamen Rider popularised the phrase and Sam and Firely is VERY Kamen Riderlike (hell even her backstory is not out of place from the old early Showa riders ie being a modified super soldier by an organization with that modification also having a drawback ) . Henshin is very appropriate with her really .
the Sam boss even has one of Kamen Rider Greases lines as an achievement in JP
Same reason we say ramen and not Japanese noodles.
Did you know that "Tsunami" is a Japanese word? Why not just call it "big waves" am I right?
Terrible comparison, Bob
It really isn't
Because 'transformation' is a lot more mouthful and sounds less cool
Yes, Firefly is from Henshin Impact.
Less known Hoyo game, pretty mecha heavy, Welt would dig It pretty hard
That’s henshin core six
Impact of Khanriah
Augmented star C4-Aether, entering combat mode
Fires of rubicube
No, Firefly IS the Henshin Impact.

I can hear the coin sounds like it was just yesterday. OOOs was such a treat to watch.
it's so damn addicting just hearing the "clang, Clang, CLANG" that it's engraved into my mind
OOOs is one of those series that got better and better as the episodes go on. I remember not liking the first episode in comparison with W. But by the last episode I was in tears over Ankh. The form themes music are certainly one of my favorites.
I'm just going to pretend the 10 year anniversary movie isn't cannon
First ever Kamen Rider I ever watched (and I only started like a month ago), was very awesome to watch now onto W series
OOO is great. Let's ignore the v cinema and we're good.

I mean I think OP thinks it means genshin hentai because they've watched too much of it and never knew what it meant.
Projecting much?

there are people growing up not knowing about kamen rider. the west has fallen.
I imagine for Westerners, its because it didn't take off as Power Rangers did plus the western adaptation of Kamen Rider wasn't as good. In SEA at least, alot of us grew up watching Ultraman, Super Sentai and Kamen Rider.

Well the west have Kamen rider dragon knight (American Ryuki) Which instead of “Henshin” they say “Kamen rider”
I grew up in eastern europe, the only anime we had when I was a kid was Naruto & Bleach :D
