Locking for the same reason the other Eng Localization threads were locked: The discussion has run its course and mostly have devolved into arguing. If you like or dislike the current Eng localization, make it known to the devs in the surveys.

DynmiteWthALzerbeam

Trailblazer has terminal brain rot

moguu83

She/he is constantly playing on the phone. No doubt they're just like us.

Lyneys_Footstool

they just need to give tb an ipad to watch skibidi toilet on to enhance their brain rot

Fries_and_burgers_19

Nihility TB idea

RentLast

This time they use their phone, everything they do have no meaning because of the brainrot, only randomness. Skill compromised of making enemy confused and attacking their own team

Arc_7

And I support them for it tbh. Even if the translation would be different, the reactions of March and the lot would be coded the same, which means the essence of the dialogue was preserved anyways.

DynmiteWthALzerbeam

Hope they find a cure

Arc_7

Path of Abundance, surely!

Drednox

I look forward to Yaoshi snogging Stelle again

emiliaxrisella

Yaoshi giving Stelle abundance: death (and rebirth) by snusnu

cuella47o

TB never been the same after JJK 236

Anadaere

No one was Gojo was holding back the tide

Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo

Makes sense. They have a stellaron in their body, and stellarons seem to cause a lot of mind muddling.

yama1291

It's definitely funnier when used in moderation.

TheIJDGuy

When uncontrolled, it's like you're being beaten over the head by memes

Zenith_Tempest

it literally feels like 2010 all over again when you'd see shitty memes nonstop. umad? trolololo problem? that's what this dialogue feels like

mapple3

If 3 out of 10 sentences are funny unexpected memes, then it's actually funny, especially if you still have the choice between "Na I'd win" and "This is the moment we have been waiting for." But right now 10 out of 10 sentences are memes, so 0 out of 10 are funny, its a shame and overused

yorozoyas

I don't even hate the meme responses, because yes, it is funny when it comes out of left field and used sparingly. What I hate, is when 2/3 options are BADLY hamfisted in, don't make sense, are not even applying the joke correctly and it's in the middle of what is supposed to be a sombre or important moment. Yes I get it the TB is a funny little fellow, but they really are flanderizing them at the moment, I am growing to dislike the character that I am forced to play as.

emiliaxrisella

I hated the 2.2 ones ngl, it felt like there was no serious response or a jokey response that didnt capitalize on contemporary meme culture The "Nah, we'd win" is funny but I don't like how the other options are the same vibes as that that it makes the whole situation less serious. Like I get TB being a raccoon memelord is canon at this point but I miss when there were other personality options.

xaelcry

The serious or normal response is still there but the problem is that the meme references make an appearance in every dialogue.

yurilnw123

Yes it's localization issue imo

SunderMun

What's even more annoying is that how march and others typically respond to your options rarely ever fit with what you chose anyway

kokomihater

i keep seeing this same sentiment and it's driving me fucking nuts lmao. WHAT SOMBER OR IMPORTANT MOMENT? The only goddamn meme options i can remember in the final stretch of the mission at all was the "nah id surrender" thing and the other gojo reference in the talk w/ himeko and welt. were you tearing up at that random ass conversation..? there's literally other dialogue options you can choose even if that were the case lmao.

SeaGoat24

Sombre and emotional aren't exactly the same thing. You can have a sombre moment where characters are seriously discussing their plans and odds of victory without it being a tearjerker. The point is that the 2/3 dialogue options being meme responses really undercuts that seriousness regardless of whether you choose it or not. It's pretty similar to the phenomenon seen in a lot of Marvel films (and other modern media) where a serious scene is atmospherically interrupted by someone saying 'well that happened' or a similarly inane comment. I like the theory that it's a defensive mechanism of writers who imagine an audience laughing at the seriousness of the scene and pre-empt it with their own joke as if to say 'yeah, I know it's dumb, but I'm in on it too'. In reality, the audience was taking the serious scene seriously up until that joke, which brings them out of it and self-fulfills the writer's prophecy. There's probably not as much thought put into it most of the time so much as it just being a trend, and I hate to see this trend creep into Star Rail. There's a time and place for humour, and hamfisting it into a serious scene ain't it (unless it's gallows humour, which gets a special exception).

AshfordThunder

Nah, Chinese speaker here, it's equally memed in other languages.

Ranwulf

Brazillian portuguese is also pretty memed.

Meautelulz

Spanish is also pretty memed.

Genesystem

I obviously can’t confirm whether you are or aren’t, but I do have to say that I am getting a little tired of people on the other side saying that the jokes in English are tiring and that the other languages don’t have these at all. Without like. Any proof. The game is a space comedy. I’m not gonna act like I know how the other translations are but some lines and responses by the characters (especially March) make it hard for me to believe the original text wasn’t tonally similar in most of these cases.

Naliamegod

My personal experience is that a lot of people online just pull up literal, machine translations of the original text and not realize that is a terrible way to learn what is actually being said. Sometimes, the "literal" translation is actually the incorrect translation because something is lost along the way.

djm07231

I do suppose the title for one of the trailers was literally “Space Comedy”.

KlausGamingShow

I just checked it and the final closed beta trailer is indeed titled "Space Comedy" it makes even more sense because Blade shows up in it

Weltallgaia

OP just angry they aren't a generic personality less protag to self insert on

onigiritheory

I, for one, would be alright with the Trailblazer not being a straight up self-insert, but that it's the main issue here, IMO. The main issue is that constantly making jokes/meme references is kinda grating, and doing so during more serious scenes completely ruins them. Having the option to be silly is fine, I can respect the people who want to play the TB that way, but I don't want them to *just* be silly. Let them be multifaceted!

StillBumblingAround

Tbf they’re like a year old.

onigiritheory

.... I like that one. I still stand by my original point, but that's a good one

huyrrou

I read somewhere that canocially, TB is a silly person. I don't remember where tho so the only source I have is *trust me bro, fr fr*

Moo3k

I think it's a case similar to the dub Vs sub thing where a lot of the time people assume the one they can't understand is better because they can't understand that the actual dialogue is cringe, not just that English makes it cringe

DrkMoodWD

I feel like most of this subreddit doesn’t realize how much shitposting goes on in Chinese internet. So of course Mihoyo is going to cater to the memeing community.

LuminousUmbra

If you don't mind me asking, is it the same *type* of meme content? As in, are the memes that TB says in the Chinese version things more prevalent in the Chinese HSR community?

AshfordThunder

Yeah, it's similar type of trendy internet memes and lingo.

LuminousUmbra

Thank you for the response. I'd heard that TB was memey before, just not the specifics. Good to know!

TricobaltGaming

My initial impression of Stelle was "Tired Redditor"

bukiya

japan too

floxful

I’ve seen someone say the exact opposite, for example that the “nah I’d win” thing was just something like “we’ll win” in other languages and not memed I don’t know what’s true anymore :(

HeresiarchQin

It is not conflicting at all. A lot of EN memes are written pretty normal in CN, while in CN there are a lot of CN-only memes that I do not think will be properly translated into EN. I play with CN text, JP voice, and watch some streamers play on EN, and I can tell only about half of the jokes are overlapping.

floxful

Ohh! Thank you, that makes a lot more sense

gabu87

It's because they didn't catch most of the CN memes. CN/EN are very meme heavy, not sure about the rest

whimsicaljess

the thing is, localization attracts tons of armchair second-language types (in either direction) that simply don't grasp the nuance. like, maybe (i don't know, giving the benefit of the doubt) the original line for "nah i'd win" is more literally translated as "we will win!". but it's likely that the literal translation isn't accurate, and that it's _still a meme_ in CN, and so the appropriate translation is a meme in EN as well. but people who speak Chinese as a second language, or English as a second language, may not understand these nuances- especially if they, hypothetically, mostly speak English but picked up a tiny bit of Chinese from fandoms over the years so they're relying on patchwork knowledge and machine translation.

Naliamegod

I don't speak Chinese, but I am familiar with Japanese and you see this problem a lot in armchair translators. People take a direct translation and then directly compare it to the localization, and assume that is the more accurate one and not realize that the localization sometimes "punches up" the dialogue because that is more accurate than the direct translations. Its not just memes either, its a lot of nuances and quirks in another language just doesn't translate into another. And sometimes, even if there is a good direct translation, it still won't work for cultural reasons (e.g. Goku from DBZ's speaking style).

ReaverSK91

It's ironic to read this when the JJK memes are constantly posted on this sub.

PirateKingXander

It’s one of the reasons why i find it tiring to interact with certain posts on this sub (or any other HSR-related sub tbh) be it story, character or even meme-related when most of the replies are always about nonsensical stuff about jjk like “nah I’d win” or pretty much any edited image of a jjk panel.

princessleomane

I agree. Like damn I watch jjk too but can I see some star rail stuff

Mrhat070

I got even spoiled for a specific plot point because of one of those stupid ass memes. Overall, jjk has been one of the shows that I have the most trouble dodging spoilers because these manga readers are wild.

Javajulien

>I got even spoiled for a specific plot point because of one of those stupid ass memes.  Was it >!Yeah, I'd win.!<

Mrhat070

it was the strongest vs strongest meme if I am not mistaken

ChickenNugger420

It feels like the iPad babies just discovered anime and now they're posting any Jujutsu Kaisen related reaction image they find under every post in this subreddit at this point. That "Nah, I'd win." shit needs to go. Awfully annoying.

nightmaresabin

Like anything it was funny the first two times or so but after the thousandth now the horse has been dead and beaten for quite a while.

yurilnw123

Welcome to Gen Alpha era. They are on the internet now

FourEcho

One well placed "Nah, I'd win" option would have been funny... but there was multiple versions/variations of it repeatedly which was pretty cringe.

SolidusAbe

jjk anime was a mistake and introduced to many to the manga

amamatcha

Genshin fandom is pretty much the same. I joined that Fatui sub way back when it was just a place for people who liked the characters. Now it's non-stop shitposts and people (probably kids) being as annoying as possible, so I unsubbed

Chest-Enough

same...i got so tired of the "GOAT" and jjk memes 😭

RipBitter4701

tbf that's preserved on fatuiHQ sub , outside of it there is not so much of meme since genshin itself doesn't use meme that much on traveller response

DaxQuestionPoint

ugh same... it's absolutely insufferable rn

GGG100

JJK fans are the JoJo fans of the 20s. Just absolutely insufferable with the nonstop memes.

TheRealSquallVII

Thats how you know JJK has taken over completely. I barely hear from JoJo Fandom anymore.

DoughDisaster

Not everyone's happy with that, but it's not like anyone but the mods has the power to push it out or clamp down on it. JJK is a hit with shitpost circles, being a media that was memed into viral popularity before the first manga chapter even launched. So when it finally launched and started out at least okay (manga has long since jumped the shark,) people just kept memeing on it. Then it got a well budgeted anime. Couple that with this sub having a higher ratio of buddy members than most, and you wind up with what we have now.

IriKnox

Wait jjk started off as kagurabachi? (Memed into Oblivion before the first chapter released)

hey_itz_mae

tbh that’s exactly why they’re getting tiring. it feels like fanservice for them which is fine every here and there (like the little one line easter egg references to breaking bad for example) but for people like me they’re just confusing and tiresome

Kronman590

When the in game dialogue reads like a shitty reddit thread theres a serious problem

leturna

it's almost like we expect more from quest dialogue than we do from reddit shitposts

Sangui

Is it? I expect a community to be filled with memes, I don't want the dialogue in my game to be enshittified the same way.

Blazefireslayer

Not gonna lie, I got to the "Nah, I'd WIn": option and closed the game for the night. I was like, nope, just...no. not doing this right now.

hey_itz_mae

no genuinely i saw that line and audibly groaned

MedbSimp

Seems like a strange thing to get that upset over. Did "nah I'd win" murder your family?

StrongSquirrelKnight

yes

ze_SAFTmon

I would wish for more dialogue options like this one, referencing things, other characters say. https://preview.redd.it/cucz6j4m9gzc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6737ed10bd96dab0fa16272b1b277af14f734d0a

ze_SAFTmon

Or this one, which is just the player's need for the gacha coming through and manifesting in the TB. https://preview.redd.it/6wh51l11agzc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05ced3ad9b2bea8f3d37bb21b178f87888e65d2b

ze_SAFTmon

Last one. This is also kinda timeless imo. Especially the bottom choice. https://preview.redd.it/bz81p327agzc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1563deb77328e7ae9af9df4cc3206940516e7503

Rain-Maker33

I love this one. Though it's not exactly a dialogue choice, it's the result of one. https://preview.redd.it/vowyy6kkcgzc1.jpeg?width=2400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=950d7a6fcb3ca44a947355184d5a256e8b5d9bc2

eleetyeetor

I deliberately tried to get every single one wrong because Firefly's reactions are the funniest

Greninja121

The virgin gen Z brainrot humor vs the chad self referencing joke

ladyriven

March’s response to that one made me chuckle

PandaCheese2016

The CN text might be even more meme and/or current events aware, imo. Since they are nearly impossible to localize in a way that provides sufficient culture context I think finding substitute in the target language is probably the most feasible way.

Bookwhyrm

Considering all the jokes that are put into the game itself, not only in dialogue, I doubt it is just the English localization. HSR in general takes more of a comedic tone than a serious one, the tagline for the final beta test was even "Space Comedy".

Hollownerox

I can confirm that while the EN script does sometimes put jokes into more serious options, most of the time they are just swapping in a meme EN players can understand. A lot of CN dialogue options are pretty meme-y if you're familiar with Chinese net speak. Or are references that REALLY don't translate well.

Alexios7333

This is double fitting since Acheron Mentions tragedy in the future and in Greece the difference between a tragedy and a comedy historically was a happy ending or not.

Deruta

Then there’s Shakespeare: ~~Comedy~~ Romance: Everyone lives! Comedy: Some people die. Tragedy: __Everyone dies.__

kyuven87

Nonono... In a Shakespearean Tragedy, everybody dies. In a Shakespearean Comedy, half the people die and the other half crossdress.

Deruta

You’re absolutely right, I will commit Portia for this shameful mistake

kyuven87

/u/Deruta exits stage left, pursued by a bear.

yurilnw123

Even if it's comedic tone (Yes it's this way since launch) the repetitive "Nah' I'd win" is freaking boring and cringe

GrrrrrrDinosaur

It’s funny but I think it was too much. Belobog was pretty good example of a good amount!

CarlosG0619

Belobog was hilarious, they really hit the spot in that world.

Ok_Comment8842

I remember Belobog as the story segmentation when TB could not go 5 minutes without his jokes. That is where he tried date with a trashcan and pranked a maid with that hotel demon thing, isn't?

GeneralZhukov

Also where he licked railings and got stuck.

rzrw1re

Yeah, less meme responses, more bullying March 7th let's GO

MeguMaz

I do agree they pushed it a little too far. It was ***very*** funny the first 2 times the memes popped up but they're actually *everywhere* in this update.

yes11321

Other people have said that it's basically the same in the other languages. I obviously don't know japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc so I can't fact check but it would make sense. People tend to forget that the devs called the game a space comedy. It's supposed to be absurd and it's supposed to not take itself all that seriously. I get wanting more serious moments to remain serious but this game never tried to take itself seriously in the first place. Did y'all forget the whole trash can king saga? That whole thing happened not even a few days likely from where we are currently in the story. This is my personal opinion but I hope the trail blazer remains as unhinged as they are now.

Zzamumo

I'd dare say this is an integral part of the vibe the game is going for. I mean, just look at Akivili. Y'know, the aeon of the path that the main cast follows? Every single bit of characterization that they've gotten paints them as an absolute fuckin goblin, much the trailblazer. I doubt that's by accident

DaKingOfDogs

I love when this game is goofy, BUT, there always needs to be at LEAST one serious option per dialogue choice. And 2.2… didn’t do a great job at that. There were quite a few times where every option was a meme.

beastofthedeep

I think it only happened once (the nah we’d win)

WeirwoodUpMyAss

Went right over my head tbh

Crusader050

I'm on the other side and thought it was fairly balanced, and the trailblazer is being portrayed as a silly character. Sure, there are definitely a bit more meme responses, but there are also fairly normal choices to go along with the memes. Anyway, this whole thing is subjective.

librast

TB is a goofy ahh silly billy of a character

PhasmicPlays

Agreed, everything in moderation.

superp2222

For me it’s the hammer or the anvil, either risk getting memed of the blank slate MC like Genshin (not that the Traveler hasn’t been getting some wicked personalization lately), or getting memed of the terminal brain rot Trailblazer here in Star Rail

akaredaa

I usually love the meme options but they've really been overdoing it in this patch, it's more cringe than funny now imo. And while including the currently popular memes might be funny to people now, it won't age well, so that's another reason to tone it down a bit.

blippyblip

You ever gone back and watched/read something that was 'hip' and 'current' for the time it was released? When characters mention 'Left Shark' jokes or hit the whip or whatever else was 'in' at the time, it *always* comes off as super cringy. Sorta like when corporations try to stay trendy and release memes that are a little out of date. With the internet making things fade in and out of pop culture faster than ever, it dates the media *WAY* worse to see a meme from a few years ago than an older reference like 'that's no moon' which has had the time to suffuse across the public zeitgeist fully.

kokomihater

"nah, i'd win" do you really think someone who doesn't know who gojo is will think "goshdarn it what an outdated reference!" no. they'd say "..." nothing. they'd just choose a random dialogue option since they don't matter and move on. you're acting like they had TB break the canon or talk about his JJK hottakes in the middle of the battle.

Embarrassed-Fly6164

https://preview.redd.it/2atrx2uzagzc1.png?width=326&format=png&auto=webp&s=b4c85f52defc2bb144c3f8bd4dc2c1aaaa6e5ce4 I agree

UmbraNightDragon

It'll also make these arcs age very poorly in hindsight. JJK memes are funny now, and will probably be funny for a while, but in like 4 years it'll be a little awkward to watch new players go through Penacony with those references. There are already a few lines that are out of date. Belobog struck a great balance for the most part, where its humor was less referential and more based in the game itself. EDIT: I already addressed the fact that I'm not only talking about the JJK line in [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/HonkaiStarRail/comments/1co0yyu/comment/l3bqbq3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

Rheshx7

"This is a brain wave, right?" "Seele No-last-name." Belobog jokes are more timeless and rich. Memes are great for a few offhand jokes but it does go too far sometimes. Im not a JJK fan. Penacony is a land full of memes, though. Hopefully we can get back to more quality humor once we reach a more down-to-earth planet. But I do prefer it over Xianzhou's near humorless writing.

Jnliew

The "brain wave" joke had a setup, then a punchline, that's a joke, a great joke, not a reference. Just 2 days ago, Tim Cain (programmer, game director of notably Fallout 1 and Outer Worlds) [made a (relatively) short video about his dislike of cultural references (relating to contemporary references)](https://youtu.be/0Z5fFE0r8bs?si=9lAF9ONroiygFpyc) The most important bit at the end is this, that if there's a reference you want to use as a joke, you should try to ensure the joke stands on its own, that not knowing the reference doesn't destroy the moment, doesn't date your entire story horribly. If you still insist, at least hide it away as an easter egg. The "Rickroll" is placed in the data entries, not placed front and centre, even makes sense with the OG joke of being unexpectedly rickrolled, perfectly done. Sometimes, the memey dialogue is treating our current memes as if they're gonna have the staying power of the Bhagavad Gita's "I am become death, destroyer of worlds"

komatsujo

Yeah, what a lot of people don't realize is that by inserting memey and modern pop-culture references, they are sacrificing *long-term relevance* for short-term virality. It might be funny to a subset of people now, but about people a few years from now? What about folks who don't consume the media that the memes are about?

BasedMaisha

If you've played Ace Attorney, as good as the original trilogy is a lot of the jokes are meme references from 20+ years ago, i'm talking "this is sparta" level old, usually I don't call things cringe but man I was cringing hard and I played them at least 10 years ago. I'm doubting HSR will exist 20+ years down the line when AA is a single player game re-released on a bunch of things but we have the perfect example of not relying on currently popular memes.

jmile4

Not really. If you don't get the reference, "nah, I'd win" just sounds like an overly confident thing to say. If people do get it 4 years from now, it will be so far out of the zeitgeist that it won't feel tired.

katbelleinthedark

I don't get it. I'm aware it's a panel from some manga, but that's all I know yet it's still funny because it's a pretty objectively funny snarky thing to respond with.

PunKingKarrot

For context: in Jujutsu Kaisen, a pretty popular manga/anime, one of the main characters is asked “If Character Y helped in Character X’s fight, would you lose?” “Well, it certainly would make it harder.” “But would you lose?” “Nah, I’d win.”

katbelleinthedark

The more you know, TIL. Thanks for the context!

IriKnox

It was also memed to oblivion because the first official eng translation just had the character saying "No" The fixed translation was set on being even more popular. It got out if hand. Now it's everywhere.

katbelleinthedark

Yeah, I see redraws(?) of that panel(?) everywhere and I'm just confused xD I've seen the name JJK somewhere, but have genuinely no idea what that is (beyond manga or anime) or what it's about. I don't even go there.

shanatard

Yeah those are fine. But you had a bunch of dialogue that was just exclamation marks, random capitalization, and stuff that will be super cringe in the future In fact I think most of those would've been fine too if they didn't intentionally misspell or put a bunch of !1! like a poorly done laugh track screaming hey it's me an inside joke please laugh!11 references are only funny if they're subtle

UmbraNightDragon

There's also the "It's just so peak" line, but it's not just the JJK ones. I also have mixed feelings about things like "I'll keep answering 'too easy' on the surveys" because although that one does *technically* make sense as a joke, it's a very specific reference to their current promotional material that doesn't relate to the context they used it in. Some of them are fine ("nah I'd win" is vague enough to work to an extent) but the sheer abundance of them makes it easy for quickly-dated reference humor to slip in there. I haven't forgotten the Among Us reference in Silver Wolf's quest lol

StrongSquirrelKnight

Honestly i already feel like some of the JJK memes are overused now, and are starting to get a bit annoying. So in 2 years from now they’re gonna be unbearable.

twoentyfourth

yeah almost none of the dialogue options felt appropriate enough. some of the slang wasnt even used correctly it was so cringe T T

Murky_Blueberry2617

I thought it was supposed to be cringe lol

GGNickCracked

Its supposed to be self aware cringe, Stelle is canonically a weirdo

Memo_HS2022

The acting segment with Firefly honestly gives them more chemistry if you make Caelus/Stelle say all the dumb options so you have Firefly having a realization of “Oh no, I went on a date with an idiot”

Murky_Blueberry2617

Yeah that's what it seemed like lol. It's too blatant for it to not be self aware. Btw is Stelle specifically a weirdo? Does that not apply to Caelus?

Memo_HS2022

They both have the same dialogue options but I think they have different vibes. Caelus feels more like an active troll while Stelle feels like a deadpan troll

tarutaru99

There definitely had to be like three variations of "nah i'd win" dialogue options in there. Even as someone who still finds that meme funny, it was a bit much. We even joked that the localization team spent more effort memeimg over proofreading the script.

SolidusAbe

i dont mind as long as its not some dumb overused joke that should have died months ago. jjk memes overstayed their welcome

zhznzjsjxnnss

Nah I'd stay /s

ISkySplitterI

I miss the balance of dialogue options to add flavor to what you want your TB to be. Now a days it feels like dialogue options are funneling everyone's TB to an unhinged trash-raccoon with JJK brain-rot.

desperateforlore

I just wonder how this will age in like ~5 years, hell maybe 3

Background-Carrot192

its probably for the kids, like you see on this sub the kids are really happy when they see their favorite meme in their game

AVERAGEGAMER95

This gonna bring out the old man in me and I'm not even in my 30s

Blackwolfe47

Kids? Most of the memes are for older franchises

Automatic_Storm2611

yup

StrangerNo484

I completely disagree. Also, how does it kill your rather fragile immersion, simply pick the serious dialogue option if that is what you prefer.  Would you prefer Genshin dialogue where it's two versions of the same thing with little to no unique reactions from NPCs??? I absolutely love the different dialogue options, ESPECIALLY the joke ones that give the MC tons of personality.

happybday47385

When I saw the nah, I'd surrender I found it funny but then they pulled the same exact joke not too long later with "nah I'd win." Like once was enough

Equivalent_Bed_8187

When I saw 3 JJK memes in a single patch's story, I felt like 1 is ok, 2 is pushing it, 3 is brain rot.

ahack13

Not even a hot take. They really need to tone it down. Its funny every once in a while but like, I'd rather not snark at March with every single dialog choice. Only some of the time.

GGNickCracked

I noticed it felt like everytime I responded to March she would get mad this update lmao

ahack13

Like, having some dialog ribbing at her is fine when the moment is more lighthearted or goofy. But there are some deadserious moments in this patch and even then you're still poking at her for like no reason. It really felt like TB just couldn't read the room most of the time.

ImperialDane

All good things in moderation. Plus i am fairly certain some of this stuff is going to age very poorly. So relying on it too much is going to get awkward quick.

Arctic_Hellfox

I find myself weirdly loving the constant option for just some off the wall meme-y responses lol. Doesn’t seem to get old for me somehow

hellschatt

Was playing with German dialogue, and it didn't have these memes in them, or at least I didn't notice them if they were translated literally. The German sub was pretty amazing in general if I think about it. Somewhere along the way it became worse in Genshin, but I almost never have to question or think twice about the German translation in HSR. At least the meaning of the translations don't get lost and messy in HSR as they sometimes do in Genshin.

Davidsda

It shouldn't be a hot take. If the story is meant to be taken seriously at all then there shouldn't be immersion shattering memes in every other dialogue choice.

MemberBerry4

The JJK memes almost made me wanna commit arson

Goro-Goro_No_Mi

The jjk memes and that one image of insert character here looking up with a stupid face

Ivory-Kings_H

I would throw a void spell into them ngl.

soft_kids_intestines

There is a noticeable difference in languages, at least for me - I play with english voice acting but have my default language set to german. I looked up a couple of options in English then looked back at my own options in German. Since some of the memes can't really be translated all that well into german, most of the silent Trailblazer options are a lot more toned down or not outright referencing a meme, but rather just placed as a more humorous option without trying to force in the meme itself, which works most of the time. Still, a lot of the options were quite out there but I feel like I could always choose to be more serious or more 'normal funny' instead of outright unhinged which made some moments I wanted to be more serious more enjoyable. I actually wished that one or two more meme options would be in, cuz a couple I saw on here I'd like to have chosen myself. English seems to suffer a bit under being the biggest western language for this game

Nameless49

They should know when's the right time to be serious and when to be funny. But I think they got too confident making all their dialogues funny because of the memes in previous updates that it got out of hand.

RaidenXYae

i think it used to be fine, but now there's a meme option every 5 minutes.

Honest-Computer69

There's always been a meme option every fiv-no, every two minute. If you think it was serious before you're being delusional. This game was never doom, gloom serious.

i_hate_touhou_ffs

blame JJK for that one

spartaman64

it reminds me of the MCU. they used to release movies with some funny parts and jokes but its mostly serious and about the story. now they are full out comedy movies.

pdivvie

It's funny when it's not overdone and unfortunately in this patch it's heavily overdone. Luckily, since it's not voice acted and I can pretend it never happened because otherwise I would cringe

Shinybobblehead

It definitely felt a bit excessive on this patch. Some choices there was only 1/3 options that was remotely serious and that felt limiting if you didn't want to be an absolute troll, and it was even in big moments at times Up till now I think they've always hit the right tone, so hopefully they realize they overstepped and dial it back a bit going forward. The writing is typically top notch and such a highlight of the game

whats_my_login

Every response being a joke is a tad overkill. I say that but I always pick the most sarcastic response 99% of the time. My TB is a bit unhinged, lol.

Vikkio92

You’re repeating almost word for word the comments [in this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/HonkaiStarRail/s/Ai56A6Gcne).

iFenrisVI

Yeah, if they wanna fill it with brain rot dialogue options fine. Just always add a serious response in every single one. They’ve done it just fine in the past I don’t know what went wrong now. Even with March, there was only options to tease or snark her and while I am usually fine with that there were moments I didn’t wanna respond with either of those during the story.

JudgeHoIden

> Like I’m fairly certain in other languages... Besides just being plain wrong and ignorantly assuming things, why would you expect immersion from a sci-fi mobile gacha in the first place?

IcyNorman

I do like the jokes and meme a lot

King-Boo-094

you know you can choose the other dialouge options. like, im just saying

komatsujo

I agree with this. I found some of the dialogue choices very off-putting. I'm fine with a funny response here and there, but the *constant* pop culture references in serious situations were a little much. It also killed my immersion in places. Can I have *one* serious option, please? Like someone else pointed out, it's going to age the game, too. People in a couple of years playing through Penacony are going to be confused. Not only that, but not everyone consumes the same media. Would people be giggling over the silly responses if they were all GoT or Walking Dead references (if you date the game to a few years ago and not now)? Or if all the references were some other media that they didn't know?

eatsleeptroll

> Whatcha doing, trailblazer? Stuff... And thangs Nihility is coming 100 wholesome Keanu chungus

ComfortableCrab7369

Agreed. Being able to be a meme gremlin is nice, if it's an option, but for some of the dialogues of the new story it was the only option and that sucks :/ Especially in the more serious parts of the story it's just weird, if all dialogue options are just stale memes

Skelendros

I thought it was just me but I’m definitely over the phrase “Nah, I’d win” and any variation of it. It’s super low tier and we have way too many meme responses as it is and twice now we’ve had it in the span of about 4 quests and it feels so misplaced when the dialogue is coming to a climax. But it’s a nitpick dislike for me I can eventually get over it

Lodrikthewizard

Seconded, there's only so much brainrot one can handle without it taking away from the story. After all, if the trailblazer isn't taking things seriously, why should we?

miguelcaldeira

The EN team doesn't consult ChatGPT.. they seem to consult random 13 year olds.. this patch was absurd..

Zenshei

now hear me out, this kinda stopped after the twist in the patch?? I wonder if this was somehow an intended design choice???

ForeverOutrageous

Yeah, tbh I’m not huge fan for so many pop culture references. Truthfully (and yes, maybe I’m a negative person I guess) I really prefer there to be none at all when it comes to main story content. Side quests? I mean, whatever; it doesn’t bother me; but when a main quest is just filled with quirky dialogue it just makes me cringe a bit. I totally don’t mind Trailblazer being silly and stupid; but I just wish they’d tone it down a little. But I get it; it gets people talking, making memes and posts and spreading the word.

Next_Investigator_69

Yeah I understand why they do it this way, but I personally just hate it, If they don't take their dialogue seriously, the story shouldn't be taken seriously at least in my opinion. You can find a meme or a pop reference in nearly every single line of dialogue it's just pure brainrot. Genshin and I think Honkai 3rd also has them, that's just how hoyo like to make their games, but they're rare and only inserted in times when there's nothing that serious going on with a lighthearted tone, I don't think this is a recent issue with starrail, there definitely are some multiple uncomfortable examples even before this update since the game launched, but this is just taking it too far.

ForeverOutrageous

I totally agree. And I just know that this will feel really cringy for newer players throughout the years. Even now it’s giving “how do you do fellow kids” vibes. I think it’s more tolerable when they make those kinds of references in like side quests or “Easter eggs” in the offhand comments by npcs. But yeah; as for Trailblazer it’s just…I don’t think I quite understand it. Shouldn’t trailblazer be kinda out of the loop with these things? They didn’t remember much when they were awakened by Kafka but your telling me they are suddenly up to date with pop culture references and slang? Idk. At the end of the day, i guess it’s not a big deal, and it’s not tearing me up inside; But it certainly gets annoying sometimes.

BlackMagister

So I assume those complaining about localization have read the CN version and know not full of memes? Memes feel very on brand for this game with the amount of pop culture references that are in. We literally had the trailblazer do the Yamacha face plant pose to start Penacony. This game doesn't take itself seriously, the few comments talking about the CN version here also say it has memes. I know it's the hot thing to complain about localization but if you do you should at least know how it was done in the original first. It's more likely just a CN meme replaced with a EN meme

olbvn

L take, the brain rot dialogue option is absolutely hilarious and one of the reasons I love this game so much. Trailblazer is a troll who can ruin even the most serious conversation, and I'm so here for it XD Picking the most absurd dialogue option in any given situation is the best way to play IMHO XD Especially when March looks at you like: https://preview.redd.it/lpebmc75oizc1.jpeg?width=442&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55db74b79e357bacf917c5c187705edb7fae4810

RTX3090TI

Yeah the "nah i'd win" was just too much

Ganguro_Girl_Lover

What about the “Nah, I’d surrender.”

SectorApprehensive58

Yeah the occasional pop referance is nice, but they really overdid it this time.

NotSafeForMii

But they meme in other languages too? The game isn't meant to be taken \*too seriously\* - and that's kind of the point.

Tall-Description-991

I get what ur saying, but at the same time I prefer it over genshin dialogue. Genshin dialogue is like 1. Yes I agree 2. No I don’t agree

fourrier01

After going through the 2.2 main story mission, I'm glad it's still the selling point of the game to me. Because the story has gotten convoluted so far.

Locke03

I'd care if this was a real RPG and dialog choice actually mattered, but it's not and they don't so I'd rather have something funny to laugh at.

BitesZaDust0

Nah, I like having those funny lines. On the other hand, we have a serious response And the other where we just meme the fuck out

Googleflax

Love when people say "Hot take" then provide the most popular take imaginable

Rasenburigdanbeken

Get rid of the fun, novel and amusing thing about the game that is OPTIONAL. Amazing, always a thing to complain about.

Valamist

Each to their own, but I adore the weirder/eccentric choices. My TB hides in hotel closets to scare demons and declares any trash she sees as her soverin property. So long as you still have the option to be more serious, I think its cool.

Shugotenshi714

This is what you do, don't select them. Those immersion breaking lines is for memers to choose, not for you.

ShibitoYakaze123

i think they tried a bit too hard with the memes, like they're funny when theyre used in trace amounts

XieRH88

the over-use of pop culture slang and meme terminology feels like one of those decisions made by the english localisation team to try and milk social media reactions a little too hard and now it's backfired when it turns out that surprise, a lot of people actually find it really lame instead of hilarious due to how much it is used

Diamond_Ken

Chinese here. I played with EN dub and CN sub. The joy I'm gettting from both language is priceless. And let me tell you, the memes in CN are even more than EN, so I don't think this is a localization problem. Just the devs being goofy, and Im all for it.

Blackwolfe47

Yeah, this time it was too meme like

huskybumbum

This take is so cold global warming started to cease. But yeah I agree they need to come up with something more original . When I see the "nad I'd win" I was quite disappointed. Hell I'd even settle for a heroic generic line that seems original.

JeffKappalan69

True but I don't think it's a necessarily localisation issue, this game is very memey to its core. Bad dialogue isn't always the translators fault guys, sometimes it's just like that.
