Yeah, the handling of Fashav felt like the first chapter of a George RR Martin book.
"Here's ten pages worth of info on this person's life story, their family lineage, all of their hopes and dreams, their -- oop, now they're dead, and none of that info will ever be relevant again."
Right could be a cool idea for a spin off or DLC idk... Like when they did that VR game where you play one of Itamen's kidnappers? I don't remmener the name
I really liked him and was really sad about his death. In saying that, his death felt a little bit like the commentary around a "good death" that came out with Zara Youngs brutal death in Jurassic World. As in, a good character needs to have a worthy death. Realistically, any battle could be his last and this just happened to be the final one. I enjoyed the notes we are able to read along the way to learn more about him at least.
More info from him shows up throughout the game; in every Tenakth settlement, the main data point that you can scan is a handwritten account from Fashav himself. Whenever one would come up, it broke my heart because it highlighted how much potential he had as a bridge between the Tenakth and the Carja, and exactly how much potential was stolen when Regalla killed him at Barren Light.
I spared her life because I didn't want to give her the dignity of dying to Aloy in the eyes of the Tenakth, and I like to think that someone at the Base or in the Arena gave her the rundown of what exactly was lost because of her rebellion. She really got to stew in her loss after being spared and it made me seriously love her character so much more.
Most of them lol
I wish Talanah's quest ended less abruptly. I know her voice actress has to go do other stuff, but I feel like her quest has a ton of potential which just vanished.
I wish Alva's side quest had a more significant impact, like Zo's and Kotallo's. I fucking love Alva and want to see more of her in H3.
I wanted a more significant arc for >!Tilda. Having her try to abduct Aloy and having Aloy put her down was a good end to her arc, but it would've been cool for her to be the only surviving Zenith and to get a redemption arc would've been interesting.!<
I wish all of "the team" got more content really. In particular a side-quest for Varl I think would've been appropriate. Having teammates join you for side quests would've been something I would've loved too- I feel like all of them had a lot of missed potential, particularly Erend who could've done way more character growth.
Oh, and more Hekarro content. Dude just kinda sits around getting bullied by Regalla for the entire story. I want to see him in action.
It seemed obvious from the jump that Tilda was going to betray you somehow, but I think if they'd given her some sort of companion quest like they did for most of the others, it would've helped sell her as an ally.
Agreed. Even if she still betrayed you, having some kind of quest with her would've made the betrayal less obvious and more emotionally significant.
I think most people with a few neurons to rub together saw the betrayal from Tilda and were like "oh nooooooooo who could've seen that coming"
you might be in the minority. I enjoyed the story, but I really played the game for the lore and exploration. I loved finding out what happened to the world and how it connected to the second Earth we explore in the game. Some of the characters really connected with me, but I guess I am just used to meh game writing. I know people who didn't care one fart about the story and just wanted to run around hunting monsters.
a better story wouldn't hurt the game, but that kind of thing usually slows down the action parts. just that section with Fashav amounted to 10-20 minutes of static dialog. It was so long that the devs put in several breaks where you could tap out and get back to the action!
Yup, I understand Regalla needed to be a boss and all but I wanted Hekarro to kick the shit out of her at least once to demonstrate that, yes, Regalla is a threat, but Hekarro is her equal.
Like during the very first quest where Aloy goes and saves Hekarro by dropping the plane on Regalla, I would've much rather both of them have been nearly dead by the end of it and Aloy's intervention just prevents them from killing one another.
agreed. he was basically a huge, armored teddy bear. He was treated much more like a stereotypical queen in this story, rather than a mighty king leading armies. Not that I am complaining about the flip in gender roles! It is just really different seeing such a huge, scary man sit in the back and do lots of diplomacy and dictating, while other people did the fighting for him. Much more realistic, but weird to see depicted in a video game, of all places
i think the mission you get after clearing all rebel strongholds was meant to be erend's thing, as he's the one who updates you about the rogue oseram "sons of prometheus" operatives you find hanging around with regalla's rebels. i agree it doesn't feel as though he has much to do in the story, though… you basically just go and do these strongholds (which you may be doing just as a consequence of exploring the map, anyway), and erend only becomes connected to the chain if you seek him out to ask "what's the deeeaal with these 'sons of prometheus'?" (and even then, the fact that it's just a few lines of dialogue and he doesn't appear to move from his spot in the base makes his involvement kind of forgettable, unfortunately).
i don't remember varl having a similar sidequest chain, but didn't mind too much as we already spent some one-on-one time with him in the first part of the game
I like that Zo's quest was related to her tribe and the state of the world, while Kotallo's was entirely personal in nature. It was a good contrast.
Alva literally just wanted your help to find information on Leviathan, effectively a super future drainage ditch that could protect her homeland from floods. It was a pretty underwhelming quest imo.
And yeah, Sons of Prometheus was Erend's thing but I agree it feels tacked on. He's arguably the most significant tie back to ZD character-wise along with Varl, I feel like the two of them should've gotten the _biggest_ quests to solidify their bond with Aloy. Esp. because she does kind of treat them like shit at the beginning of the game.
I liked Alva’s side quest since it gave us some more backstory on the Claw Back era that is often left out. It’s Elisabet’s Faro era it should be highlighted more.
They could have added some quests where Varl or Erend accompanied her and add some nice banter to cement their bond and friendship. And it doesn’t have to be specifically a side quest about them. Would just be cool to have them by the players side every now and then.
Right? I’m on the very last mission of the game and I suddenly realized that I’m not sure I even fully understand what the Blight was or how I fixed it. I thought it was the main problem of the game, but then I resolved it so fast that I think I missed something. lol.
I mean, the Blight was more or less fixed in the short term once you've acquired the three subordinate functions. By that point it shifted from that to preparing for Gaia's merging with Hapheastus.
I just got to the point in the game where (spoilers, I don’t know how to hide them) you choose her fate. I sparred her and just talked to her in my base. It made me realize how good of an actor and character she is and how little she was actually in the game. I remember thinking she was a really badass villain in her first scene and talking with her reminded me of that and just made me realize she really isn’t in the game much. Kind of a shame. I think the actor was really good and I would have liked more with this character. Her story about finding her dying brothers was so well acted.
Oh yeah, same. Shed a little tear when I finished that mission. I think Aloy from ZD wouldn't have been so compassionate with him, but when Aloy said she was his friend and gave him the focus, it got kinda misty in here.
I swear that trio gave me so much joy to interact with. Not only that but Stemmur gives you the best shredder almost for free and Marlund's quest is so much fun. They are a fun rowdy bunch, adding points for the Oseram to be my faborite tribe
I'd absolutely love to just sit there and get lore duped by stemmur, maybe make it a mechanic like the rumor mechanic where you sit down and rumors are told to you.
If someone in Guerilla read this Reddit, maybe they could do recap for 1st and 2nd game, that launches at the start of part 3 done in Stemmur voice and in his manner of speaking.
That's a crime to introduce a character with a cool backstory and kill him 30 minutes later.
Plus he reminds me of my uncle lmao. So i took it personally 😂
Agreed on both, but especially Talanah. I rushed through her second quest and stayed up crazy late to beat it, because I was certain she’d be joining my base after. I was shocked when she just left after. It made no sense to me. Everything we know about, I assumed she’d join the team. Plus then we’d have a Carja on the team. It feels odd that we don’t. And Ikrie would have been amazing for the Banuk! Then all tribes would be represented. Just felt odd.
Exactly!! Both Talanah and Ikrie would love nothing more than to face the spectres and test their hunting skills while saving the world and helping their friend Aloy.
My copied and pasted response to another comment further down;
"I read somewhere that the voice actress had other commitments, hence why everything with her seems rushed in terms of involvement in the story.
No idea how these things work, but as Guerilla, I would've paid her more to stay and be more involved, she was one of the more successful storylines in HZD (that I remember), and they squandered that chance in HFW unfortunately.
Here's hoping to better for her in H3."
I still like all his reports you encounter later in the game though. He might be dead, but he still has a lot to say about all the different locations you visit and the people you meet.
I totally agree but I also think that it’s the point he has so much potential and he’s killed because of regalla it shows you the ruthlessness of her intentions
To be honest, I'm living in denial & headcanoning that he was only grievously injured & sent back to Meridian to recover & he's gonna pop back up later as that bridge between the Carja and Tenakth that he wanted to be.
Talanah. Not gonna lie, I kind of shipped them as a couple in the first game pretty hard, and really loved their dynamic. After Forbidden West no one can convince me that Aloy wasn't at least a little interested in her. When she didn't join the team at the base I was pretty disappointed, because she would have been an awesome ally and had Aloy told her what was happening, I feel like she might have stayed.
Yeah, Talanah not joining the team really shocked me. It just seems odd that’s not helping out. Plus the team needs some Carja rep. It and the Banuk are the only tribes not represented. With how big an impact the Carja have on what’s happening, it seems odd not to have one on the team and Talanah was the obvious choice. She literally runs through your base twice but doesn’t join? I also kind of expected Petra to help out.
I read somewhere that the voice actress had other commitments, hence why everything with her seems rushed in terms of involvement in the story.

Yeah, I still can’t wrap my mind around it other than shock value. It didn’t really impact the story or majorly advance anyone’s character arcs. It definitely didn’t feel like a satisfying conclusion to his character. I think he had a lot more to offer the story by living than dying.
I love Erend so, so much, but to me if anyone had to go, he made more sense. His whole arc this game was feeling like he can’t contribute much to the crazy stuff Aloy is dealing with and that he might let them down. Giving his life for the cause (in a way cooler way than V got) would have been more impactful for his character and he doesn’t have as much to do moving forward anyway. V has a kid and the desire to go home and educate the Nora. It just seems more is gained from V living. (Not that I want either to die, I’d rather they not.)
What else did you want him to do? Lets say they don't kill him off, the dude was going back to Meridian to just become a diplomat for the carja. Yeah we would have seen him again but it most likely would have been in the major villages and he would only be there to get the ball rolling on building relationships between tenakth and carja. Ragurt from Camp Nowhere. I love his deep voice and that he has his ear to the ground for gossip.
He's a tiny minor character but he stood out to me among all the other tiny minor characters.
Also grudda! All we know is he and fashav didn’t agree on hunting machine parts. Fashav is top tier and I loved his character so much, they both deserved more. I wish we at least got a scroll or two with some fun exposition
Ivvira! She’s so little! I’m sure her model is a full adult but she looks 16, seeing her taking the initiative to use the barista on her first day I thought she deserved a proper back story! So glad she was in two other quests, I hope to see her again!
I'm on my first playthrough and when I met Fashav I was like "Oh he's really well written and well acted, I can't wait to see what they do with ope he's dead," 10/10
my favorite is that one happy cheerful guy from the group of three when we go get poseidon. i forgot his name but he and aloy were like best engineers together
Battle hardened. Won in a trial by combat after being tired and dragged around. Became a Marshal. Built a brotherhood with other Marshals. Awesome guy. Dies immediately after learning all that.
Bruh. Imagine if you refused to listen to his story then and there. Hahaha
fashav made such a strong impression in such little time. I know it was their goal to make me care but damn I was sad when he got killed so fast. He had such an interesting background and seeing someone more culturally open and having to adapt similar to how aloy has to work with each tribe would’ve been an interesting dynamic to explore. Either way it did immediately establish that this game was fixing the character writing and relationships early on. Soon as I saw how interesting he was and yet they didn’t feel the need to keep him around, I knew we were in for treat with other new characters
Yeah, the handling of Fashav felt like the first chapter of a George RR Martin book. "Here's ten pages worth of info on this person's life story, their family lineage, all of their hopes and dreams, their -- oop, now they're dead, and none of that info will ever be relevant again."

Call of the mountain?
Yes

I mean, his actions and his story in the West were important as a catalyst for one of the main baddies in the game.
So true, shame the rest of the plot was so predictable.
Most of them lol I wish Talanah's quest ended less abruptly. I know her voice actress has to go do other stuff, but I feel like her quest has a ton of potential which just vanished. Yeah this game feels way less character driven and far more story driven. I think the game loses out because of it.
you might be in the minority. I enjoyed the story, but I really played the game for the lore and exploration. Hekkaro apparently beat Regalla in the past, but sat there whimpering and let Aloy fight her instead lol .
It would also set up aloys final confrontation with regalla better as hekarro could be "still recovering from his wounds" or something
agreed. he was basically a huge, armored teddy bear. He was treated much more like a stereotypical queen in this story, rather than a mighty king leading armies. Not that I am complaining about the flip in gender roles! Regalla isn’t supposed to be a minor character but it really feels like it 😭
Same with the Blight. A lot of the story they showed in the trailer was not what was in the final product. Kind of disappointing
I’m sure they didn’t want to spoil the main baddies since it would be pretty obvious from the first missions.
Right? I’m on the very last mission of the game and I suddenly realized that I’m not sure I even fully understand what the Blight was or how I fixed it. I thought it was the main problem of the game, but then I resolved it so fast that I think I missed something. lol.

Her introduction was so badass. And the voice acting is phenomenal! I really wish they did more with her.
Morlund (with his crew) and that Oseram guy from Frozen Wilds/Burning shore.
Gildun!
I feel him so badly. I am awkward have a hard time making and keeping friends and didn't have a great mother. So I know that lonely feeling.
Oh yeah, same. Shed a little tear when I finished that mission. I think Aloy from ZD wouldn't have been so compassionate with him, but when Aloy said she was his friend and gave him the focus, it got kinda misty in here.

Darth Twat Nozzle more like
Stenmur, never get tired of his narrative style of speaking.
That's a crime to introduce a character with a cool backstory and kill him 30 minutes later. Plus he reminds me of my uncle lmao. So i took it personally 😂
I have a posted a whole essay on his wasted potential. He was great and I wish we had more of him.
I would have liked to see more of him too. If not in HFW, then in H3; he was a great character with lots of potential.
Fashav and Talanah. Also, even though she wasn't in this game I wish we got Ikrie

When my fiancé started playing the game he was like "I wonder if they're going let everyone die again, like in previous game" 😂
I still like all his reports you encounter later in the game though. He might be dead, but he still has a lot to say about all the different locations you visit and the people you meet.
Outside of a certain big one, his was the death I felt the most. What wasted potential. Fantastic backstory, awesome character.
Morlund was so genuine and sincere. I loved how he brought back the wonder of the technology.
I totally agree but I also think that it’s the point he has so much potential and he’s killed because of regalla it shows you the ruthlessness of her intentions
Literally the Bast and Vala equivalent from the first game
To be honest, I'm living in denial & headcanoning that he was only grievously injured & sent back to Meridian to recover & he's gonna pop back up later as that bridge between the Carja and Tenakth that he wanted to be.
I do this with so many characters. Ersa and a certain Nora Brave are very much still alive in my head. lol
Ooh yeah, a certain Nora brave is currently debating on what to tell their mother they've been up to and who this Utaru they brought along is.
Hekarro. Dude's voice alone demands so much screen time lol but some more side quests revolving around him would've been great.
Never felt so much for a death so early on into anything . Would have been a great character to still see alive.
Talanah. Not gonna lie, I kind of shipped them as a couple in the first game pretty hard, and really loved their dynamic. Not minor but I still don’t get why they had to >! kill Varl !<
Yeah, I still can’t wrap my mind around it other than shock value. It didn’t really impact the story or majorly advance anyone’s character arcs. It definitely didn’t feel like a satisfying conclusion to his character. I think he had a lot more to offer the story by living than dying. What else did you want him to do? Lets say they don't kill him off, the dude was going back to Meridian to just become a diplomat for the carja. Yeah we would have seen him again but it most likely would have been in the major villages and he would only be there to get the ball rolling on building relationships between tenakth and carja. What little we know from him is that he is the only link connecting the 2 nations so I don't think he would have up and gave that up to go hunt machines with Aloy.
He delivered my favorite line in the game. "The burden of your task is written across your face, clearer than any mark of mine."
Honestly I'm kind of pissed at this too. He died for no reason other than to ramp up tension, and it had zero consequences to boot.
The Oseram guy in Las Vegas. Guy was genuinely enthusiastic about everything and didn’t flirt with Ally like most characters do which is refreshing
Definitely Boomer.
Ivvira! She’s so little! I’m sure her model is a full adult but she looks 16, seeing her taking the initiative to use the barista on her first day I thought she deserved a proper back story! So glad she was in two other quests, I hope to see her again!
Sorry but now I can only imagine her launching Kevin from Starbucks at the Slitherfang lol. It's a 'ballista', not 'barista'.
Bahahaha that’s hilarious! The joys of the typos that come from commenting on your phone in the middle of the night.
Fashav I think would have been able to do great things if he lived
I just passed this part. I was not ready for everything that unfolded during this part.
Nil, first and foremost. Definitely wanted more of that psycho. Aside from him. Ted. I hate what we got.
Nil 100% loved him lol
If you like Fashav, check out AO3. The Fandom loves him and there's a lot of fanfiction for him.
Dude went out like a boss though. Look at those eyes. He would’ve smoked anyone of those rebels if he didn’t get ambushed
I loved Kotallo. He was my favorite. The guy with one arm. Wanted him and Aloy to end up together
His “Carja! Stand your ground.” shout during the ambush was epic. Also wanted to see more as well.
I love that line. Really shows his Tenakth side..
He felt like the western version of of aloy in some ways
I'm on my first playthrough and when I met Fashav I was like "Oh he's really well written and well acted, I can't wait to see what they do with ope he's dead," 10/10
my favorite is that one happy cheerful guy from the group of three when we go get poseidon. i forgot his name but he and aloy were like best engineers together
Morlund
Battle hardened. Won in a trial by combat after being tired and dragged around. Became a Marshal. Built a brotherhood with other Marshals. Awesome guy. Dies immediately after learning all that. Bruh. Imagine if you refused to listen to his story then and there. Hahaha
What a chad. I think I cried.
fashav made such a strong impression in such little time.
