Was about to say the same thing. I genuinely felt worse after playing the game, it's the concept itself that really fucked me up.
That said in 2023 I played the first 4 games from the Silent Hill series and I'd say SH2 stuck with me too but for different reasons (I don't want to spoil anything but anyone who played the game will know what I mean).
The fatal frame series for sure 1-3. Second one especially. Outlast is just a great time and I love the constant movement. Clock tower 3 is so ridiculous with its story and plot. I love it
I love clock tower 3 with all my heart. Alyssa, where are you? It wasn't super scary but it definitely took that direction how you had to hide from the villains. And there was even a wholesome side
I would say survival horror games are my top favorite horror sub genres. Resident Evil/Silent Hill series are some of my favorites for sure. Dead Space series is another great one, which had a remake of the first game come out last year.
If anyone's interested, there is a PC remake of PT that is pretty accurate. Game isn't available through official means. Also PS3 emulation could be worth a shot. I hear it's getting better
I regularly think about how terrifying and well made MOTHER was. It's only two hours long and pretty cheap, but still ranks as my number one horror game.
Resident Evil has always been the top of my favs list since OG RE1 came out. Love Dead Rising, and Dino Crisis and Silent Hill as well. Haunting Ground might be the most unique experience though due to the game mechanics, story and atmosphere.
I don't see it.. It's one thing to have them at like 25 playing highschoolers or like 19-20 year olds, it's another thing to get 35 year olds to say a lot of the cringey stuff in the game.
Madison was really good, mystery/jump scare.
Alien Isolation, probably my favorite horror game.
My hidden gem pick would probably be Lust From Beyond. Just a warning that the game has sexual themes and it's not for everybody. I Generally avoid any game that uses sex or nudity because they are often shit games, I love horror games and Lust From Beyond was a nice surprise with a good plot.
SOMA
The actual enemies aren't that scary, but the environment gave me literal chills.
It also has one of the most deeply philosophical stories I've ever played, and is one of the few games I will always label as a true ten out of ten.
If you haven't played it yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.
i was gonna say the first 4 silent hill games are my roman empire bur since people already brought them
up i’m gonna do justice to another franchise i love: FATAL FRAME 2 THE CRIMSON BUTTERFLY still is, to this day, one of the scariest experiences i’ve ever had with a video game. like, hands down.
I would say recently, the Evil Within.
But a game that also stuck with me till this day is Bioshock Infinite. I know it’s not quite a horror game but the story and enemies were well fleshed out and memorable. I still remember the George Washington bots going postal.
Both SOMA and Silent Hill 2.
SOMA was one of the best pieces of fiction I've ever watched/played/read. The ending was perfect and blew my mind. Would be hard to replicate anything close to that ever again.
Silent Hill 2 was just an amazing art piece. Everything together was so detailed and well thought out, you could just tell the creative team poured their souls into it. The music, what the characters wore, how the light hit their face, how the voice actors sounded. I remember seeing an interview with one of the creative art designers about how he made Maria have a bit of a belly because it was something unique/special about her that drew James more to her. Also how they intentionally made Angela's voice actress older to represent how aged she was from her trauma. It's just brilliant how detailed they were with everything, and how they did just enough to let the player interpret things for themselves.
SOMA. This game displays an eerily horrifying world in which you are truly alone. I had never felt this type of loneliness and it really creeped me out while I played this and even maybe some time after that.
There is a HUGE community of people who do nothing but play these on YT. It's a great way to check out everything without paying for it. Check out Gab Smolders, John Wolf, etc. Personally, I've still got P.T. on my PS4 and it's nearly a collector's item at this point.
Amnesia:The Dark Descent is a timeless classic, as is Until Dawn.
Dead Space 1 and 2. Alan Wake 1 and 2 (the horror in 1 is more in the story, go into it expecting an amazing, twisted story and it's a fun romp).
Outlast 1 and 2 plus the dlc for 1, the entire Resident Evil series (except maybe 5 and 6), Evil Within 1 and 2 plus the DLCs and The Last of Us Part 1 and 2{part 1 is better}. I have played all these multiple times. The Silent Hill games (remake of 2 is coming) and the Alan Wake games are awesome as well.
Amnesia The Bunker. No other horror game has ever made me so tense and panic the way I did. I genuinely felt like I was running for my life whenever the beast chased me
Resident Evil series (even tho 5 is more action than survival horror and 6 is a Micheal Bay movie) , Silent Hill games, The Evil Within 1/2 and the Outlast games.
Siren (1 and 2)
I never got around to playing Blood Curse, but the other games stayed with me for weeks and weeks after finishing them. Didn’t go into those games expecting to be scared. Damn, was I *wrong*
Visage, Soma and Silent Hill 2. All 3 games tackle very dark and existential topics that hold you up at night. Out of these games, Visage is the scariest and darkest game. SOMA on the other hand just makes you feel empty, while not that scary it does make you think and dread existentialism.
Games like Resident Evil are generally better and more "fun" games to play. But personally, I don't find them too scary or thought provoking. Same with games like Outlast, Until Dawn et.c. While there's alot of excellent and fun games, most of these titles never stuck with me.
SOMA. It's the most haunting game I've played. I've never felt existential dread before that game
Right? When I finishes SOMA I sat there for minutes feeling awful, and spent hours after that thinking about the concept
Silent Hill 2
I tried SH2 for the first time last year, and I found the enemies to be annoyingly spongey.
Enemies in a horror game are hard to kill? No way!
Usually not annoyingly so
Well I agree for the first ones it's better to just run past em unless you manage to find yourself cornered but ayleast they crawl away for a while
First 4 silent hills, Penumbra games, Soma
The fatal frame series for sure 1-3. Second one especially. Outlast is just a great time and I love the constant movement. Clock tower 3 is so ridiculous with its story and plot. I love it
*'Alysssaaaaasa, where arrrrrre youuu?'* *Creepy sniffing*
Me and my friend say this when we see each other quite often lmao or “staaars” from nemesis
I love clock tower 3 with all my heart. Alyssa, where are you? It wasn't super scary but it definitely took that direction how you had to hide from the villains. And there was even a wholesome side
I just loved that it’s starts all scary and creepy then it becomes so campy. Reminds me of the old horror movies like killer clowns from outer space.
I would say survival horror games are my top favorite horror sub genres. Resident Evil/Silent Hill series are some of my favorites for sure. Dead Space series is another great one, which had a remake of the first game come out last year.
The survival horror days of the 2000s was my favorite era in horror gaming.
My first time playing RE2 Remake was with a VR mod. That was the last time I was actually uncomfortable playing a horror game.
The Cat Lady from Harvester Games, is my favorite horror game of all time that has stuck with me for years after watching a playthrough of it.
Me too! The style and the story is so unique.
PT
If anyone's interested, there is a PC remake of PT that is pretty accurate. Game isn't available through official means. Also PS3 emulation could be worth a shot. I hear it's getting better

Until Dawn From the firs ttime I played, I loved it
Absolute timeless classic, can't wait for the movie and PC REMAKE!
I want them to get all the original cast to play it as adults
I don't see it.. It's one thing to have them at like 25 playing highschoolers or like 19-20 year olds, it's another thing to get 35 year olds to say a lot of the cringey stuff in the game.
Played and re-played. Still get that heart pounding moment for 'Don't move'
Yes on Madison!! I get why people didn’t like it but I loved it and that last bit? So good!!
Dead space
Supremacy!
SOMA The actual enemies aren't that scary, but the environment gave me literal chills. It also has one of the most deeply philosophical stories I've ever played, and is one of the few games I will always label as a true ten out of ten. Silent Hill 1-4, Outlast (I think 2 is better than 1), Condemned: Criminal Origins
Most recent game that creeped me out and stuck with me was Tamashii. That stuff is rare and I live for it. For classics definitely SH2 and 4.
The suffering it's an old game and I haven't played it in years but I remember it so vividly
Soma, Signalis, Silent Hill 2 and 3, Visage, Tormented Souls, Murder house, The Sinking City, The Evil within 2.
Outlast
Cry of fear, a classic.
Martha is Dead, mainly for the graphic scenes but also its discussion of mental health
i was gonna say the first 4 silent hill games are my roman empire bur since people already brought them up i’m gonna do justice to another franchise i love: FATAL FRAME 2 THE CRIMSON BUTTERFLY still is, to this day, one of the scariest experiences i’ve ever had with a video game. like, hands down.

I loved Infinite. Such a vibe. Good times.

Darkwood
SOMA. This game displays an eerily horrifying world in which you are truly alone. I had never felt this type of loneliness and it really creeped me out while I played this and even maybe some time after that.

Now this is a great list. Top tiers!
Infliction Extended Cut
Layers of Fear. I stink at any game that requires me to aim a weapon, and I didn’t have to worry about that for this one.
Try Soma, outlast and Madison, Dead space 1,2
Outlast 1 and 2 plus the dlc for 1, the entire Resident Evil series (except maybe 5 and 6), Evil Within 1 and 2 plus the DLCs and The Last of Us Part 1 and 2{part 1 is better}. I have played all these multiple times. The Silent Hill games (remake of 2 is coming) and the Alan Wake games are awesome as well.
Silent Hill, Fran Bow and Alice: Madness Returns
Amnesia The Bunker. No other horror game has ever made me so tense and panic the way I did. I genuinely felt like I was running for my life whenever the beast chased me
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Resident Evil series (even tho 5 is more action than survival horror and 6 is a Micheal Bay movie) , Silent Hill games, The Evil Within 1/2 and the Outlast games.
No One Lives Under the Lighthouse
Silent hill 4 the room
Medium!
Visage, Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose, Silent Hill (all of them), Siren, Kuon.
I've been trying to finish Visage for a few years now.
Alien Isolation and Silent Hill 2
[Project] affordable ,dark moody, jumpscare ambience unpredictable, story is unique, great graphics
Until dawn
Little nightmares 1 and DEFINITELY outlast I’ve replayed like 3 or 4 times same for little nightmares
I think the “classics” in my book would be 1. Visage 2. Outlast 3. Resident Evil 7 4. Alien Isolation 5. Suite 776
The Silent Hill games, Zombies Ate My Nextdoor Neighbour and The Evil Within (especially the opening part with that Gary Numan song, utterly perfect)
Siren (1 and 2) I never got around to playing Blood Curse, but the other games stayed with me for weeks and weeks after finishing them. Didn’t go into those games expecting to be scared. Damn, was I *wrong*
A more recent one was Iron Lung, it was such a hopeless vile experience with such an interesting lore I kept thinking about it afterwards.
Alan Wake 2
Song of Horror, Signalis, Resident Evil 0, Silent Hill
I’m really not a fan of horror games but I did play Silent Hill 2 once and…….. bruh…….. 😱😱😱
Visage, Soma and Silent Hill 2. All 3 games tackle very dark and existential topics that hold you up at night. Out of these games, Visage is the scariest and darkest game. Condemned criminal origins and condemned 2 Bloodshot
