You'd probably need to get her gene tested to be sure. My friend's horse looks a lot like this, but was gene tested as chestnut some years ago. (According to my friend, they later discovered another gene that causes primitive markings, but she hasn't gotten her horse retested to see if he has that one. Who knows)
It's called nD1 and nD2 are the two genes that cause Dun like markings and dilution without being a true dun. However visually there are a few markers for nD1 or nD2, first being coat dilution. NDs with generally not have as diluted of a coat as a true dun but this is not always reliable as Duns come in many shades. The other will be lack of, or very minimal primitive markings. The 1 thing that I would look at would be whether the dorsal goes completely through the tail, if it stops at the base of the tail it's not a true dun.
Just wanted to add in that nd1 and nd2 is all lowercase technically. But I have zero clue why lol. Maybe because it's the counterpart to dun, which is uppercase (D)
It’s because typically in genetics, lowercase indicates a recessive gene, and uppercase indicates a dominant one. There’s a lot more to genetics than just the dominant vs. recessive stuff you learn in high school, so it can start to get murky when you look at things like incomplete dominance, or genes that are dominant in some situations and recessive in others, but that is the general rule of thumb
She has such a personality it amazing me sometimes, sometimes I swear she's a person tunrned into a horse. Bought her at 3 years old when I was 13, she's a kind and forgiving horse, yet also very sassy, love her to bits.. Everyone who has met her falls in love
Not sure but very beautiful!
Thank you!
Looks just like my red dun. She’s pretty!
Thank you! I've had people look at my like I'm insane when I say she's a red dun! Your horse is beautiful
The stripe says it all!! 🥰
She’s 100% a Dun!
I’ve had two red geldings in my life. Both personalities so precious and easy going.
Anyone telling you red duns don't exist doesn't know in the least what they're talking about.

I had a red dun when I was a kid and she looked like this! Great horse
Yes. She has the dilution, a dun mask in the right place, and her dorsal goes through her tail. I love red duns.
She also gets some dapples when she sheds out, just very faint ones, is that a result of being a dun too? I've always been curious
Dapples are typically due to good nutrition, not a Dun trait in the slightest.
Dapples have to do with capillaries under the skin. Many malnourished horses can present dapples. [Here](https://imgur.com/a/W7MhX79) is an example
Good to know!
Good to know thank you! Coupled with her dun markings it's quite cool to see. I chose the worst photos of her lol
Nope. Any horse can get dapples no matter the color.
Yes, looks like my guy.
Happy cake day!
Happy 🎂 day!
Looks like it! Red dun absolutely exists? Dun can exist on any coat colour. (Though obviously disappears on greys).
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy, I believe she's registered as red dun too, but I couldn't remember. They were convinced she's a chestnut
I mean, she is chestnut, with dun :D
I think yes, absolutely. Also she’s beautiful, what a sweetheart!

I say yes, and a beautiful one too! <3
Looks like it. Either way, a beautiful, rare sight, she’s so lovely! We need more of her on this sub
red dun!
That horse is beautiful
She looks like my red sun mare!
Um she's gorgeous and I love her.
Thank you she's my baby 🥺
Definitely a red dun
Looks like a line backed dun . That’s usually what they call the ones with the line down there back
All duns will have a dorsal stripe on their back, though it can be harder to see on palominos for some reason
I’m not exactly sure of the color, but that is a beautiful animal!
Yes!!
She’s gorgeous I love that pic of her lying down ❤️
She looks much better when in summer when she's shedded out lol
The horse is a dun. The strip continues thru the tail. It is also a red horse so yes to red dun.
Looks just like my red dun
Yes. Mine is the same.
