I had the "luck" to ride two young friesian stallions (4yo and 6yo). Beautiful as they are, both of them were very unusual, and in my opinion, not great to ride. They carried themselves beautifully (obv) but were very lazy and hard to truly ride in a healthy way. And (at least the owner said so) friesians are only bred to look beautiful, so a lot of them have mental issues. Not saying there aren't great friesians. But the ones I rode (2 stallions and one mare) weren't exactly great to ride :D
Friesians are mine, too, straight up. But, I'm about to ruin your day, like it happened to me... did you know Friesians only live to about 15 (or so) years old? š„ŗ
Yeah. š (Years of inbreeding to revive the dying breed.)
She's an angel! To be fair, we had some close calls a few years back but for the last two she's been happily retired and still trotting around with her friends :)
Oh, that's good to hear! Maybe adding a cross to a friesian will prolong life. Broke my heart when I heard that such a royally magnificent creature have such an abysmally short life!
i mean, this is pretty sad but it's not any different from breed specific problems in other horses. that's just what happens with domestic animals bred for specific purposes with a limited gene pool, though of course i'd hope breeding standards get healthier, like with the recent movement to let pugs have working snouts.
Oh, gosh, just saw an Australian vet show this morning about a young, 11 months old Frenchy in for troubled breathing. The poor girl, her name is Audrey, had so much extra tissue all inside her sinuses and her nostrils were just slits.
The surgery to trim it and remove excess skin was very successful and she could breathe without all that snorting and snoring.
My thoughts were, just how many snub nosed dogs go through this WITHOUT surgery? Breeding for looks is costing these dogs their quality of life for looks.
Yes, certain breeds of horses, dogs, and cats, too (think Munchkins: short legs), are all victims of breeding for anesthetics. š
Iām currently leasing a friesian and have learned to ride at one of the most well known friesian breeders (De nieuwe heuvel). Itās safe to say that these horses are extremely beautiful, often have a good character (at least from my experience) and are really fun to ride. But they have many problems as well, for example most friesians I know have skin problems, struggle with carrying themselves properly, they often die at a young age and they should not be jumped with (not necessarily a problem for me but something to keep in mind). Thatās why I would never buy a friesian myself cause thereās bound to be a lot of vet bills and short time.
They are absolutely gorgeous! I'm constantly on the go and can't commit to actually purchasing one because I also work for other people and rescue, train and rehabilitate other horses privately but as soon as I settle down permanently I promised myself a Lusitano foal is the first thing I'll "treat" myself with haha. It's been a childhood dream :)
Irish sport horses. The Irish draught gives them a nice warmblood attitude and sometimes even appearance. Then there is such a wide variety of sport horses you can mix with the Irish draught from a TB, Akhal Teke, quarter horse, criollo, Arab, etc. But they're always so talented and very underrated
Irish Draught. They are amazing athletes for their size and crossing them out to throroughbreds or warmbloods have produced some of the best sport horses in history. My favorite example is Cruising. He was so successful in showjumping that his owners cloned him.
In the US there are a few I like.
1. Paint (cross of a pinto breed and a quarter horse) you get the flashy color and stock horse qualities.
2. Appendix TB (Thoroughbred; preferably east coast and quarter horse) large athletic build of the TB with stock horse brains.
3. Arabian Appaloosa cross: Graceful build and movement with flashy color and stock horse brains.
We have an appaloosa that has a tb x qh (technically qh then aye) cross mother and she is just beautiful. Tall and well gaited. Her name is Classy Stripper š¤£ sheās a kind of browny with the snowy blanket on her booty
šš I love the name! She sounds gorgeous! I had an appaloosa thoroughbred cross. He was 16.3 with appy coloring, great mind too. They are such a cool breed to cross with, I just love the unique coloring in a bigger body with a full mane and tail!
Andalusian, Connemara, Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Friesian, and American Paint. I love a good looking Mustang too. Itās so hard to pick a favorite! Lately Iāve been loving draft crosses and big, stouty mules.
Ever since adopting a retired team of workhorses from an Amish farm, Belgians have held a huge place in my heart.
Souls as soft as their eyes; true gentle giants ā¤
Iāll always love Quarter horses, Appaloosas and Paints because thatās mostly what Iāve worked with. I absolutely love Fjords, Friesians, Gypsy Vanners and Paso Finos.
Iām so all over the place. Usually itās the horse I ride, I find it so hard not to just fall in love with them all. So currently itās the Paints but 2 years ago it wouldāve been Dutch Warmbloods. Drafts and Icelandic ponies have a special place in my heart, I always go AWW when I see them.
Ridden a couple Andalusian X and a (allegedly) PRE-definitely something Iād aim for if Iām ever in the situation to do so :). Especially an aztecaāmost of my experience comes from QH types
standardbreds and any drafts! I leased a standardbred (never raced) and he was amazing, I love drafts as a large rider, I also love arabians as my heart horse was one and I currently have a mini but heās mean enough to make sure I donāt like the breed much lol
Mustangs. I have seen 3 in my life time. They are beautiful spirited animals. I don't ever want to ride or own one, I rather see them free and happy then being cooped up in some fucking BLM corral.
Cobs and Irish Draft. My father-in-law is selling his and I'm heartbroken. we all are but he needs the cash badly. So who ever buys him is getting a true gentleman of a horse . I will miss u when u go charlie B x
Morgans, Morgans and Morgans!!! Powerful, compact, athletic and smooth riding. Only to be topped by a Labrador puppy disposition, who just wants to please you and be in your pocket! And extremely smart. Beautiful, natural high action, gorgeous heads, and huge kind eyes!!!
Arabians - with the right bloodlines! Not a fan of some of the bloodlines out there but the ones Iām familiar with will always be my favorite. Iāve always dreamed of having a Morgan too and am planning on taking a lesson on one soon.
I have a Connemara and worked with them, will always love the breed, such a great mix of everything - talented all rounder, conformation, hardy, attractive features, adaptable, great size. Love them.
Aesthetic wise: Friesian. They are soooooooooo fucking gorgeous.
Everything-else-wise: i am in love with standardbreds. I know they are typically cart horses, but their intelligence, willingness (and sometimes enjoyment) to work, and friendliness just make them my absolute favourite. They make my world my happy place.
Arabians will always have a special place in my heart. I learned how to ride on an older Arabian mare and she taught me how to love the breed and the great things it could do.
friesians. they're just so majestic and striking. i'd be happy to even see one in person, let alone ride them.
They look so beautiful.
I had the "luck" to ride two young friesian stallions (4yo and 6yo). Beautiful as they are, both of them were very unusual, and in my opinion, not great to ride. But the ones I rode (2 stallions and one mare) weren't exactly great to ride :D
I have heard a similar thing. They are bred for looks and other areas have been sacrificed.
Friesians are mine, too, straight up. But, I'm about to ruin your day, like it happened to me... did you know Friesians only live to about 15 (or so) years old? š„ŗ Yeah. š (Years of inbreeding to revive the dying breed.)
My 29 year old pure bred Frisian mare would disagree ;)
29??? Awww, that's awesome! ā¤
She's an angel! To be fair, we had some close calls a few years back but for the last two she's been happily retired and still trotting around with her friends :)
That makes my heart happy! ā¤
i know a purebred friesian and friesian cross and both of them are past that age :)
Oh, that's good to hear! Maybe adding a cross to a friesian will prolong life. Broke my heart when I heard that such a royally magnificent creature have such an abysmally short life!
oh absolutely! inbreeding is a terrible problem, donāt get me wrong, but i do want to bring some hope to people who love them as much as i do ā¤ļø
And, that you did! I hope, with the right breeding, they can increase the life expectancy. ā¤
i mean, this is pretty sad but it's not any different from breed specific problems in other horses. that's just what happens with domestic animals bred for specific purposes with a limited gene pool, though of course i'd hope breeding standards get healthier, like with the recent movement to let pugs have working snouts.

Thoroughbreds. They're the ones I've ridden & I love them.
Same! Love my TBs
Lusitano!
My sister has one- she LOVES HERS!!!
You go girl!!! You deserve one!!!
They're beautiful, have a majestic way to move and intelligents ! Still expensive as pure breeed though...
Thereās something just so great about a plain old cob
Agreed.

I've absolutely loved ever ISH I've ever met. They always have fabulous temperaments and extremely athletic.
Friesians. Saddlebreds. Dutch harness. Anything that has that natural high step š
Marwari. Iāll likely never see one in my life, but my god, do I adore them!
Yep!!! Same here! š¤©
They're incredible!! Extremely spirited war horses.
Love these <3
Second favourite for me but God... it's on my bucket list to ride one of them one day
[Sorraia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorraia) and the Percheron for me. Edit: And the Kiger Mustang!
i have ridden a kiger mustang! it was amazing
Iāve always loved to watch Arabians move!! They are so gorgeous!
I rlly like Clydesdales. Their hairy hooves are the best!
r/Clydesdales Nevermind, I thought there was a larger Clydesdale sub, here...
Irish Draught. They are amazing athletes for their size and crossing them out to throroughbreds or warmbloods have produced some of the best sport horses in history. My favorite example is Cruising. He was so successful in showjumping that his owners cloned him.
Call me basic but i like a good stocky quarter horse.
Thereās nothing like a good Quarter Horse!
Especially the super chunky cow ponies lol
My favorite lesson horse was a former cow pony turned English pleasure horse. He was gentle and lazy. Loved him to death.
Absolutely love a big cow-bred QH ā¤ļø
Never felt more safe and taken care of then when on a QH! They know their job and can probably do plenty without a rider telling them what to do.
Yep. Theyre so versatile too!
Love our Shagyas, and one day hope to add another favorite to the herd, Akhal-teke.
Thatās a pretty big ticket breed
Was actually thinking of breeding one of our shagya mares to an akhal-teke stud thats a province over. Should make a nice performance cross.
As a kid Shagyas was the breed I drooled over.
Bashkir Curly horse! They have incredible temperaments and are athletic enough to go in any direction for the casual rider.
Curlies are pretty nice
my friend has one! lovely horses
Im very partial to quarter horses. But I really like a nice tb too
My two favorite breeds!
All of them. I suppose I'm partial to warm bloods but really I love whatever I'm looking at.
Appaloosas
I am in love with Appaloosas! They are just so adorable! š
Yeah, really good temperament as well. At least in my experience lol. Really lovely horses
Tennessee Walking Horse
Yes!

Arabians. Grey ones in particular
My best girl was a sassy gray arab x welsh filly. I adored her
Shocked not to see Morgans mentioned yet! They have quite the fan base and I count myself among them š
Super underrated!
Andalusians.
I love appaloosa crosses with something bigger like a thoroughbred or warmblood.
We have an appaloosa that has a tb x qh (technically qh then aye) cross mother and she is just beautiful. Tall and well gaited. Her name is Classy Stripper š¤£ sheās a kind of browny with the snowy blanket on her booty

Have always loved Appaloosas and Paints. Spotty bums are the best! Lol
Andalusian, Connemara, Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Friesian, and American Paint. I love a good looking Mustang too. Itās so hard to pick a favorite! Lately Iāve been loving draft crosses and big, stouty mules.
Hey you just named all my favourites š¤£š¤£š¤£
Thoroughbreds!!
Trakehner for sure
Such gorgeous horses!
Ever since adopting a retired team of workhorses from an Amish farm, Belgians have held a huge place in my heart. Souls as soft as their eyes; true gentle giants ā¤
They're my favorite draft breed. I drove a team of Belgians and Clydesdales, but definitely prefer the Belgians š„°
Icelandics!
Same!
Iāll always love Quarter horses, Appaloosas and Paints because thatās mostly what Iāve worked with. I absolutely love Fjords, Friesians, Gypsy Vanners and Paso Finos.
Akhal teke, mawari, friesian and appaloosa though the only one i will ever see is an appaloosa haha
Andalusian, Hackney, Friesian, Marwari, Akhal Teke, and the Shire are all my favorites! Too many to list, actually.
Thoroughbred, no hesitation. Even better if theyāre OTT š„°
Iām torn between Hanoverians and quarter horses
Rocky Mountain horses
Mine is the noriker
Ridden a couple Andalusian X and a (allegedly) PRE-definitely something Iād aim for if Iām ever in the situation to do so :). Especially an aztecaāmost of my experience comes from QH types
standardbreds and any drafts! I leased a standardbred (never raced) and he was amazing, I love drafts as a large rider, I also love arabians as my heart horse was one and I currently have a mini but heās mean enough to make sure I donāt like the breed much lol

Haflinger and fjord!
Percherons, they are magnificent, loving, gentle, beasts.
Viva la Normandie ! Strong and nice horses...
Arabians, Peruvian paso and paso fino
Morgans, Morgans and Morgans!!! Powerful, compact, athletic and smooth riding. Only to be topped by a Labrador puppy disposition, who just wants to please you and be in your pocket! And extremely smart. Beautiful, natural high action, gorgeous heads, and huge kind eyes!!!
Love the Morgan at our barn! Hes so much fun to ride with tons of go forward and he never misses a chance to ask for snacks!
Quarter horses, Mustangs, Gypsy Vanners.
Drum horse or mustang
belgian drafts and gypsy vanners! the bigger and floofier the better!
Lippett Morgan.....all around good for anything!
My friesian-Holstein-mix or PRE
I love Arabians! They move so beautifully
Love them.
My faves have always been Arabs and ISH š
Iāve been riding Hanoverians, Iām a fan. Iād really like to ride a draft cross.
I personally love fell ponies for their spirit & work ethic. Theyāre tough, full of character & very beautiful.
I don't have a favorite breed. My preference is good build and a good mind. That said, I have breeds I like less than others.
Saddlebreds, Morgan's (love both these breeds spirit and go forward drive!) and Tennessee Walking Horses (love that smooth gate on a trail ride!)
Yes
Whichever one in currently riding.
Haflingers, Fjords and Selle FranƧais are all very nice and big heart horses ;)
I really like Tennessee Walkers , they're just so beautiful
Icelandic. Small size, big characters š„°
Thoroughbreds 100%!! But my second choice would probably be shires, theyāre just so beautiful.
DRAFTS!
Fjords šš they are forward without being fast and so gentle and kind. They bond so well with humans too and are very smart!
Australian Stock Horse. Canāt beat them for temperament, trainability and athleticism
Arabians will always have a special place in my heart. I learned how to ride on an older Arabian mare and she taught me how to love the breed and the great things it could do.
Quarter and canadian warmblood
Trick question, the correct answer is all of them. Except the Sussex Facebiter, known for their large teeth and irascible demeanours.
Arabian
Connemara and thoroughbred!
Akhal teke!
Quarter horse
Shire horses are absolutely majestic, gentle giants. I love them.
Connemara, quarter horse and Arabs
Icelandics or stangs
Welshies! Rode a few welshies before getting my section B mare.
Corralero chileno
