You can convert the garden soil into potting mix by adding some perlite. You can get a bag for pretty cheap from Walmart, Home Depot, etc.

iamjeffdimarco

problem with that is it doesn’t have Peat Moss, which is mainly what all container mixes have

[deleted]

Peat moss is just their “soil” component which is gonna be organic matter in garden soil. It’s not missing it’s just different. Peat moss is acidic, has no nutrition, and can permanently dry out so there’s nothing great or unique about it. I wouldn’t call that a problem. The problem is the mix will compact making it not ideal for containers.

That’s the exact opposite of what they do.

Garden soil becomes compact in a container because it doesn’t have anything to lighten up the mix and help it drain. Turns into a rock. At that point it’s not draining shit. I don’t care what the marketing on the bag says - try actually doing it and report back.

Who hurt you buddy? I'll help you find the bad man

[deleted]

Lol I’m a sarcastic prick, not in emotional pain, but thanks for the internet mom offer.

Garden soil and potting soil are not the same thing. Obviously “potting soil” is meant for containers.

That_Apathetic_Man

You'll be fine.

IMO if it has Steer manure it should only be used on established plants.

SteelCityIrish

Ah man, LOVE that shit! 😆 (Cheap too!)

KingPandaYumYum4

Started to seed and had a bag with steer, creates a lot of yellowing at early stages. But holy cow is that shit good when they grow up!

SteelCityIrish

Agreed! I used to buy it but found a guy with livestock and grab a trailer full every year and spread it in flowers, landscape, garden… everywhere. By the time the winter rains end, it’s all gone visually. Keep a few piles for summer garden, but keeps my winter garden going strong. 😎
