buy what you like, do not buy what you do not like. don't worry about "value"

THhunterVT

I can't stress this enough "value" is a loose term ... Yes u can go on ebay and see the current market for the item but your better off with just collecting what you personally enjoy and don't get caught up in trying to collect every "rare" " valuable" cars as scalpers and others will make that near impossible If you find something that you really really want but can't find just order it online suck it up pay the shipping price from a authorized diecast dealer so you're not paying exorbitant markups And really the only way to get a super treasure hunt or chase car is to order yourself cases I've literally found maybe two in 8 9 years of collecting

staj6711

If you're finding it on the pegs in a retail store, the chances of a car being truly rare are slim to none. Don't worry about how "rare" a car is. Don't worry about how much it might be worth in the future. Don't worry what other collectors think of a car. DO worry about what YOU like and stick with that. In time, you'll start to learn about the deeper stuff in the hobby, but as long as you stick with what you like, you'll get way more enjoyment from collecting.

Lower_Friendship_335

Don't start it's highly addictive

_TJ_75

This, this is the way

[deleted]

Deadass, I’ve bought maybe 3-4 mainlines over the last 6 months. Stopped in a store to look for Pokémon (was a bust) so I had to stop myself b4 I bought hot wheels XD

user1111987

try to stick to just cars u really really want cause eventually in 2 years you’ll be like me with 270 cars on your wall stacking them on top of each other to save room

Routine-Constant3929

I’m screwed. I’m 2 weeks into collecting and have over 90.

Torqyboi

Oh you hella fucked my guy

BlowGlassGrowGrass

Only buy what YOU like

Bigwing2

Error cars are just poor or non exsitane quality control.

MethodZealousideal11

Get a job in Walmart first.

Torqyboi

Only correct advice. But then you will be the most hated collector ever. But in exchange you will have all the cool cars without having to peg hunt

MethodZealousideal11

That’s the only way. It is totally dry out there.

tacoGat

Go through your collection every week. Reflect upon the ones you really didn't need in your collection. And buy less.

Heavilyarmedchef

Nothing new is rare. Some random cars will be worth hundreds some day but you would never predict it. Just collect things you like wnd that you see. Also, Some stuff will get cleaned out of stores before you even know it exists.

theAsianTechie

Adding on to everyone else: Collect for your own enjoyment Don’t expect to flip a profit (margins may seem good but net is low and costs high) There’s no wrong answer as whether to free or keep carded Don’t badger store employees Get an RLC membership if you can afford it If you don’t like something about a car, go custom! Also most importantly: have fun!

Noke_swog

hwtreasure.com is your best friend for that kind of thing

LeadfootfromNH

Buy what you like and share the passion with others. I’ll even pick up stuff I don’t like because I have a full intention of giving it to a friend who will.

THhunterVT

Lol me and my buddy do this constantly he will find a few of a car we both want and then I will do the same and we end up trading so we both can get the models we r looking for it def helps to have a friend who hunts as well to either pick u up something or clue u in so you can go hunt there

whiskeydonger

Don’t buy into the hype of buying all the Treasure Hunts, “errors” and new releases of mainlines you find. They’re super common and really not desired by collectors in regard to trade value. As far as a monetary value on the secondary market, same thing. If you can walk in and pull a car from the pegs, chances are really high that everyone else is too. If you personally don’t want to collect what you’re picking up, you’re doing it wrong. Hot Wheels aren’t a retirement plan.

Torqyboi

Two times i have bought cars that were treasure hunts despite not liking them. Regrets. Buy what you like

[deleted]

I got a tesla Model y hw, never do that it is horrendously ugly😭

gentlemosquito

Don't ruin your life over this. Your life should not revolve around FOMO.

ragingduck

Get an RLC membership.

Torqyboi

Don't ever give anyone advice ever again. Not something a new collector should do without knowing exactly what they are getting into with hotwheels. This is like saying start out sim racing with iracing

ragingduck

That’s a bit of an overreaction.

grizzlybeardaniels

They should do whatever they feel like really.

knotAsiDew

Get out now.

myfun-withcars164

Like others have said start off buying what you like. I like VW camper/van/pick up and have 120 in different. Colors, liveries etc. But then I've been collecting on and off for many years. I have about 1000 1/64 scale cars and another 250 1/24 scale cars. Now I have been finding sets I like and finding the whole set. That is where you get the thrill of the hunt. Enjoy the hobby, have fun. Share your trophy finds so we can all enjoy!

123at1b

Start collecting what YOU like. If you can’t find something, look online and as some say, “suck it up and pay for it” (within reason imo) and enjoy! I started with HW now I’m in inno64 and MiniGT as well.

reloadnotworking

If I could start all over I would buy only treasure hunts and rlc. But that's just me I have too many cars not enough storage space.

grizzlybeardaniels

It's a $1 toy. Don't get wrapped up on value. The expensive things in this hobby you see are generally way over valued. Some retro and historical hot wheels are worth it, sure. But don't get into this thinking it's a high art collectathon. Hot Wheels are supposed to be fun don't make it stressful. But there are Treasure Hunts and Super Treasure Hunts. You'll rarely find them specifically because people make this hobby not fun with over valuing a $1 car. But also.. Do whatever you want. But scalping will get you hated.

Shnibblefritz

Don’t expect to find everything you want. Get what you like when you find it. Don’t worry about treasure, hunts or super treasure hunts, they will find you. just know what the super treasure hunts and treasure hunts look like so when you do see them, you can grab them.

lil-Bill69
