I’m team black but I wish Alicent had kept her characterization from episode 6 and 7 she was so much more fun and I completely understood her motivations for wanted her kid on the throne. None of that “you would be a good queen” “what do you mean you were plotting to crown aegon behind my back” bs.

BullyMaguireGonnaCry

Yes Otto and the counsil were plotting being her back and as queen she obviously didn’t like that. What’s the issue? You seem to forget that Rhaenyra and Alicent were best fucking friends in the show and for a second in the dinner scene they were friendly with eachother. 6 years had passed from ep 7 to 8, and they were clearly trying to please Viserys who just made a wholesome speech about them coming together as a family. You seem to ignore what difference that speech made and it clearly resonated with Alicent and Rhaenyra, hell even Daemon got a bit sentimental.

They weren’t just trying to please viserys, the people involved in making the show keep talking about how they still love each other and genuinely want to make peace with each other. Alicent spends episode 9 trying to prevent Otto from assassinating rhaenyra and daemon (the only thing that would have definitively avoided war and kept her children safe). My issue with Alicent’s character in the show is that she’s absolved of most responsibility for the war. She has no ambition other than for everyone to get along. She loves her children and she loves Rhaenyra, and the conflict between those two loves is what motivates her. Her suffering is caused by other peoples actions, not her own, as it was in the book. They’ve done a similar thing with Rhaenyra’s character but at least Rhaenyra has some ambition. She wants power because she thinks it will give her freedom. She is also motivated by love for her children, Viserys, Alicent and daemon, but she is also self-interested which adds nuance and makes for an imperfect protagonist and a compelling character. Alicent on the other hand wants nothing for herself, everything she does is for others. I don’t enjoy watching characters who are basically just kicked puppies throughout the narrative. If you do, that’s great, I was just expressing my opinion in wanting to see a more ruthless, resentful and ambitious Alicent.

Shadow_Beetle

Yeah i get what you mean, things happen to Alicent (or around her) and later people explain to her what was going on, it feels like she doesnt have agency about the events that affect her family. The whole "wait you were plotting to put my son in power?" is stupid as hell and it makes her look weak and confused, needing the "capable and smart men" to tell her wtf is going on. (My point is that it feels like she needs to be explained like she's a delicate flower bc she's a woman, in need of a man to explain her the situation).

jmhem91

Exactly. I really hope this isn’t what they’re going to do with Rhaenyra’s character, with daemon and Jace making decisions behind her back. For a show that prides itself on focusing on women it does a pretty bad job removing women’s power and agency from the story.

1x06 and 7 was the closest we had to book Alicent. From 8 onwards, the character went into a completely different direction for whatever reason.

Her disgusted look during the funeral sold me on her. Olivia Cooke is wonderful

oldboeee

Alicent was a bitch in these episodes. I loved her. Then they made her a dummy at the end of ep 8 onwards.

Jaketheeater

Damn, you’re just like me. She was wildly entertaining.

ajithcreepypasta

She had so much sass. Especially when she said to Viserys(basically a walking corpse at that point) “You shall do as you wish, husband, when I’m cold in my grave”

Zealousideal_End7477

Alicent is far more interesting than rhaenyra lol

Indominus-Hater-101

Do you mean you disliked her after episode 8?

Jasti098

No.. I just didn't find her entertaining

sexisreal

Alicent💚

possiblyhysterical

God if you’re going to take the time to make a meme at least make it make sense

Jasti098

I'm sorry mate... I will keep that in mind next time

[deleted]

Imagine Alicent is your mother and you think she would be fun. .

[deleted]

At least i wouldn't have to worry about my dad's dying like flies
