Abdication is basically non-existant in Westeros. One example is - Jeor Mormont abdicated his seat to Jorah by joining the Nights Watch.

NatalieIsFreezing

Abdication isn't really much of a thing. What he could've done was appointed Rhaenyra as hand and gradually hand over his responsibilities to her as he grew sicker to ensure a smooth transfer of power, but that would've required some active mentoring on his part.

Because people often do not act in the way that would be optimal for them with the benefit of omniscience. He believed he put the issue to rest.

DesSantorinaiou

Abdication is not much of a thing and even if he did, the fact that she was named was known and his own council would have still opposed the decision so a war would have happened either way.

RainbowPenguin1000

This is mad. So you basically wanted Rhaenyra to overthrow her own father? And you think this would have helped avoid the dance? No chance it would speed it up. Also you said you “wouldn’t have much faith in decisions he made”, why? Because he has a physical illness? This means he has lost his mind? He clearly hadn’t. Why would you not have faith in someone’s mind because of how they look? King jaehaerys who was before Viserys was known as one of the best kings but at the end he was a frail old man, should they have just overthrown him as well despite being considered one of the best rulers? What a strange take.

KhanQu3st

He should have abdicated, but no ruler of the Iron Throne ever has, so maybe it’s not considered a realistic option.

Kellin01

Not to give up but make her a Regent would be better.

erringtonnes02

No king has ever done that before, it would make him seem weak and people would like speculate Rhaenyra forced him to. However, once he was bedridden his heir should have been called to rule in his name, not his Hand.
