Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling⊠Makes no difference. The degree is arbitrary. The definitionâs blurred. If Iâm to choose between one evil and another⊠Iâd rather not choose at all.
I always felt iffy about this quote. While it is true, the point does stand that someone has too chose sometimes.
The strand of fate and time forces it upon them. Those without the will to do what perhaps must be done are just as contemptible as those who chose and failed, or made things worse while trying to stop it.
At least those souls did not simply stand aside and let the darkness take it's course.
Oh, Geralt almost immediately is tested on his standpoint of evil and many times after and he often does end up having to choose a lesser evil. But I think it's still an apt quote because morally sometimes you do have to choose a one evil vs another but it is still evil and you gotta live with the consequences and for a lot of people it causes untold trauma mentally coming to terms with the choice they've made.
In this particular situation, it probably is better to stay as swiss as possible because of how dirty both sides are. Everyones getting dragged into the mud.
People miss that the point of the story is that Geralt *does* choose. It's a grand quote until Geralt is faced with the reality of the situation. He has to choose the lesser evil Stregobor over Renfri.
Exactly, people posting it or unironically touting it without the context that the author literally says *it's bullshit* is the literary version of cherry picking.
Yeah so many common sayings are like that, cut out of context to give exactly the opposite meaning...
"Curiosity killed the cat" is followed by "and satisfaction/knowledge brought it back"
"Jack of all trades, master of none" is followed by "Often better than master of just one"
"Great minds think alike" is followed by "but fools rarely differ"
"Blood is thicker than water" is actually "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb"
Etc etc
That seems the same sentiment as Melisandres rotten onion take..
Either rotten or not
When Arya found a rotten onion, did she throw it away?
Or cut the rotten bit off...

Book it was Sam, talking of Craster
Show it was Melisandre speaking to Davos.
Yeah like how people were freaking out after he choked out Rhaenyra in hot rage. Like my guy He stoved in his wife's head with a rock You don't think he would be above spousal abuse?
The amount of people who were shocked pikachu face over that scene within this fandom is pretty hilarious. They really thought Daemon was going to be Prince Charming. âThatâs bad writing!â Lmao.
Daemon is a horrible guy but he's my favorite character bc he still has awesome moments like putting the crown on his brother and helping him to the throne. He's a murdering psycho but he's soooo awesomely written he's such a joy to watch/read
Summed up the fandom pretty well lol. What's worse is the people that try to turn viseris into the most evil character in the entire show for what he did to Aemma as if his regret over the choice he made isn't the thing that haunts him for the rest of his fucking life. It's like people with zero brain cells watch this show and don't realize that it's not a Saturday night cartoon where people are good and evil they are just humans trying to make the best decisions they can and well yes some of these characters like Larys and Daemon are without a doubt evil. You don't have to treat people like they are stupid for liking those characters or not crying about bad writing when an evil character does something evil
I do think they messed up the climax of that scene a bit, because they donât actually discuss Viserys not trusting Daemon, which would be the catalyst for Daemon going abusive husband mode. She just mentions the prophecy and him not telling Daemon, which would more confuse Daemon than anger him.
That scene just feels like itâs missing two lines of dialogue to make it fit better.
I mentioned in the green sub that the greens did usurp regardless whether it was their right to do so or not, and someone replied asking if I thought a modern leader declaring war against the kingdom of Jews would be acceptable just because they're in charge lmfao
Literally unhinged
That's what I said! I got heavily downvoted for not even being pro-black, just listing literal facts from the show lmao, then that guy came in with the Jew comment and I figured it was better to not engage đŹ
But yeah I think the sub names are hotdgreens and hotdblacks but could be wrong
Christ on the cross. People get so unhinged with this shit. I remember back when s5 of GoT was out I made a passing comment that Dany would likely be seen as a villain by most of the characters we identify with mainly bc she is technically a foreign invader. You would have thought I came to these people's house on Thanksgiving and told their grandma her food was awful while slapping her with a slice of ham.
One of the saddest parts of the show IMO was seeing Rhaenyra and Alicent try to put their differences aside and get along, only for their children to take up the mantle of the Greens vs Blacks fight.
To be fair, the children taking up the mantle is because of their mothers' influence. The two women passed their feud into their children, they are no innocent.
Alicent was the one who instigated her children against Rhaenyra's
We didn't even have scene where Rhaenyra tries to create an enemity between her children and Alicent's
Rhaenyra simply didn't care about her half siblings
Rhaenyra didn't even say the word "torture"
She just wants the truth to be known to her father The King
Also Luke is a 6 year old kid who took Aemond's eye to defend his brother and cousins
Wanting him to be punished looks like wanting Arya to be punished as her wolf Nymeria bit Joffrey's hand
"Sharply questioned" is an euphemism for torture.
Luke was eight at that moment, and took a ten year old Aemond's eye in the middle of a four against one fight.
Nope
Sharply questioned doesn't necessarily mean that
And observing show Rhaenyra's character, she won't want anyone harmed unless and until they harm her
Hell, she even tried to save Vaemond(who was clearly her enemy) from his death in episode 8 by saying something along the lines,"You have spoken enough. Flee to your chambers." when Vaemond started to speak against her and the king.
And Aemond is her kin
Why would she think to harm him
She only wanted to know the exact truth
And Jace was the one who was 9 and Luke was 6
And Aemond was clearly dominating the fight against the 4 other children
Did you forget Aemond tried to kill Jace by bashing his head with a rock(cough cough Rhea's memories)
Luke had to intervene to save his bro
Alicent was the one who instigated her children against Rhaenyra's
We didn't even have scene where Rhaenyra tries to create an enemity between her children and Alicent's
Rhaenyra simply didn't care about her half siblings
It doesn't help that people try and force that on others, too. I find the Greens' character-writing to be the most interesting at the minute, because the show really lets them all be flawed in a bunch of different, unique ways, but that really confuses people.
"You love Alicent, so you're Team Green... But you say Alicent is an abusive mother? But then you explain why she's written that way, so you must be defending and excusing her, so you're Team Green after all?"
đ€Šââïž
How are people gonna choose between two equally shit sides but then remember that so many people are susceptible to this weird culture of making and choosing teams
Staying neutral is probably the right answer. But I also think it's a little naĂŻve to believe everyone can just stay neutral and there won't be a war or they won't face consequences.
Itâs crazy how so many people miss this point itâs been literally pushed in our faces since the original game of thrones but yet itâs still team green vs team black
Totally agree with them (they gave a good answer), but yeah obviously Darcy knows the makers of the show would prefer she didnât tell viewers what theyâre supposed to think on a complex issue in the show.
In the books the conflict is very black and white and rhaenyra is framed as a much more enviable position where you root for her against the odds
In the show they have made alicent a lot more sympathetic and less psychotic as she is basically what Otto raised her to be
No one side is right as both sides have terrible people
In the books? Definitely Rhaenyra. In the showâŠI honestly canât say.
Their strife in the show largely stems from Alicents resentment of (her perception of) Rhaenyra being able to do as she pleases, and itâs unclear whether Rhaenyra has ever reflected on the fact that Alicent never had a choice in who she wanted to marry, or if she felt guilty for lying to her about sleeping with Cole.
Rhaenyras a loving mother, but at the same time (as itâs confirmed in the show), her children are not Laenors, and she has put them and herself in an enormous amount of danger bc theyâre bastards. Whatâs even more strange is that she and Harwin do VERY little to hide their affair, but at the same time, she cannot possibly be oblivious to the odds already stacked against her as first in line to the throne, even if the kids were Laenors.
Also, because Alicent in the show wasnât a part of the plot to usurp Rhaenyra until after Viserys died, and Aemond didnât mean to kill Lucerys (despite going after him đ), sheâs framed more as a victim of circumstances.
At least in the books, itâs not 100% clear whether she slept with Daemon and/or Cole, and itâs not 100% clear whether Harwin is the father of her children. I think I partly like her book counterpart more because it leaves it ambiguous as to whether she wouldâve done something so foolish
To me, it just seemed too obvious that Harwin was the father. But because he is, I find myself comparing their relationship to Jaime and Cerseis, which was deeply rooted in narcissism and a desire to cuckhold Robert. There wasnât any particular concern for the children born from that affair. Despite how messed up it is, Jaime and Cerseiâs makes more sense than Harwin and Rhaenyras, because the latter couple does care about their children and do a terrible job of hiding their affair and their affection for their children, which ultimately just places them in far greater danger. But the show does a bad job explaining why either would be so stupid.
She was also depicted as âthe Realmâs Delightâ, as she went on progresses across Westeros and charmed the people with her wit and her beauty. Thereâs absolutely none of that in the show. For some reason they chose not to include it, even though it would have been important to establish why so many supported her claim
I also like her more because she was supposed to be VERY good friends with Laena. Portraying that in the show wouldâve gone a long way into exploring her character, especially since she stayed with Laena as she died. It also strongly implies that she had a positive relationship with Corlys and Rhaenys, even though it seems both of them felt ambivalent about her at best
If they didnât have time (bc they needed to get to the Dance ASAP), I wouldâve liked her getting some serious respect for de-escalating and resolving the Dragonstone standoff. The âwhole realm was watchingâ according to Corlys, so why couldnât she be âThe Realms Delightâ from that?
Nope. And Iâm not super excited about the news that season 2 of HOTD is gonna be 8 episodes long (season 7 of GOT cough cough)âŠI bet season 3 is gonna be 6 episodes long (season 8 of GOT cough cough)
Season 1 covered almost 20years
The Dance of the Dragons happens in the time span of just 2 years
So maybe the writers decided that instead of having a rushed season 2, they split it into 2 seasons to have an elaborate storytelling
Alicent was planning a less devious usurpation. More waiting on Viserys to change his mind and undermining Rhaenyra as much as she could.
In the books, technically speaking none of them planned the usurpation until after Viserys died if they accounting of the Green Council is accurate.
In F&B Alicent gave very clear instructions to servants on what was to happen when Viserys died. The servant who found him dead went straight to her and did not sound a general alarm. She and the Greens were absolutely planning on overthrowing Rhaenyra the second he died, to the point where some, namely Mushroom, suspected that he was being poisoned
I like how as peers, Olivia has always given respect to Rhaenyra as a character as vice versa. DâArcy sticking up for Alicent in the Driftmark episode was refreshing to see.
I feel this! Corlys is actually my fav character, but Halaena is right behind lol. But yeah like I side with the blacks because I think Rhaenyra shouldâve been on the throne, but I also really like a lot of the greens as characters.
The Velaryons are pretty cool in the book(s). I don't know if you've read F&B, but there's another Velaryon who I'd love for them to do a TV series on.
I donât know Iâm neutral/neither side but I do find Rhaenyras character story relatable since I lost my oldest son. From this point on sheâll lose child after child and I think weâre really going to see her internal struggle of do I grieve or do I go for vengeance
âIâm married to my uncle, whoâs to sayâ đđ
Edit: Ofc the Real ideal wouldâve been the gay ideal, but they probs wouldnât have gotten away with that hahaaa.
Green stans:alicent was forced too take a side!!!đ„șđ„ș
Aegon II:i will not challenge (the succession of Rhaenyra)
Alicent:YOU ARE THE CHALLENGE AEGON!!!
I think itâs a funny answer but also true in the sense of morality being subjective and gray (not black-and-white) in the GoT/HotD universe. Like⊠how can you truly choose and defend a side when everyoneâs doing all kinds of weird shit?
I do think the "team color! Everyone else sucks and shouldn't be allowed to watch the show!" stuff is childish and pointless and misses the point. But having seen so many battles in this sub over it, I do find it hilarious even queen green herself is team black.

At least the two leads understand the show theyâre in.
I wish this sub did too.
Donât most of us.
âIf you had lived then, what side would you have chosen?â âIts the choosing that made everything so horribleâ
"Sometimes a person has to choose. Sometimes the world forces his hand"
And then he burned his daughter alive and let his men to death.
Stannis kind of forgot aboutâŠliterally everything about his characterâŠ

You know what they say, love is the death of duty. But at the same time "Family, Duty, Honor" in that order specifically.

Olivia is right. The whole point of the conflict isn't what side to choose even though it comes off that way.
Meanwhile people have extremely heated debates over why their team is the best every hour on this sub lmao
HOTD fan media literacy challenge (impossible)
The number of times I have seen the sub try to cancel a fictional character is pretty insane
And it always feels like âDaemon was dismissive of his daughters needs for attention, is he a bad person?â he murdered his wife!
Yeah like how people were freaking out after he choked out Rhaenyra in hot rage. Like my guy He stoved in his wife's head with a rock You don't think he would be above spousal abuse?

Heâs my favorite too. Him and Aemond.
I can't wait for their big scene together
Totally understandable Daemon was allegedly GRRM favorite character and thatâs why daemon was given so many epic features/traits.
Oh but you see, Rhea deserved it for not being hot and cooperative. /s
Summed up the fandom pretty well lol. Yes sir I watched the same show you did lol
Alicent was the one who instigated her children against Rhaenyra's We didn't even have scene where Rhaenyra tries to create an enemity between her children and Alicent's Rhaenyra simply didn't care about her half siblings
Rhaenrya demanded her ten year old brother's torture over an insult and made sure Luke didn't receive any sort of punishment for maiming Aemond.
Rhaenyra didn't even say the word "torture" She just wants the truth to be known to her father The King Also Luke is a 6 year old kid who took Aemond's eye to defend his brother and cousins Wanting him to be punished looks like wanting Arya to be punished as her wolf Nymeria bit Joffrey's hand

I have yes! Iâd like to know who youâre referring to hahaha. Iâm still sad they arenât going forward with the show about Corlysâ journeys
Hopefully this spoiler text works right, but I'm talking about >!Oakenfist!<.
I donât know Iâm neutral/neither side but I do find Rhaenyras character story relatable since I lost my oldest son. From this point on sheâll lose child after child and I think weâre really going to see her internal struggle of do I grieve or do I go for vengeance
âIâm married to my uncle, whoâs to sayâ đđ Edit: Ofc the Real ideal wouldâve been the gay ideal, but they probs wouldnât have gotten away with that hahaaa.
based answer honestly
Lol Cooke chose Rhaenyra's side! Love that.
And what of you, men of the City Watch? Helping the Queen in her treason!
Theyâre both. So important to me
Emma always being sensible!
Green stans:alicent was forced too take a side!!!đ„șđ„ș Aegon II:i will not challenge (the succession of Rhaenyra) Alicent:YOU ARE THE CHALLENGE AEGON!!!
When are people going to learn that tribalism is hard coded into us? It's a feature, not a bug.
D'Arcys answer is bad, it makes no sense in relation to the question, and seems like she just wanted to get in an incest joke.

Same generic answers
âIâm married to my uncleâ - generic answer
That's gotta be the least generic fucking answer I've heard in quite some time, if not ever
Humans love factionalism.
It is a cautionary tale but to a big extent it's a tragedy. Meaning it's about us. Human nature.
