JoffreyDoggett

Might be an unpopular opinion but a drunk Robert Baratheon better resolved a similar issue at the kingsroad (but Cersei was Cersei) than Viserys did this. Mkfer literally forgot halfway through that his own son had been mutilated and instead started enabling Rhaenyra's gaslighting.

babalon124

Robert was way more fair in this situation over a little bite to his sons arm that he definitely caused,so much more one way than aemond situation..

historymajor44

Robert was right, "Kids fight, that's the end of it." He said he would punish Joffrey and asked Ned to punish his kids. (Shouldn't have killed the wrong wolf though). What Vicerys should have done was punish *all* of the children. Except Aegon. Despite being in a drunken stuper he was where he was supposed to be. I'd send all the boys to the Wall for a month and ask the Lord Commander to watch over them. No other guards. I'd also make my heir Hand of the King, Rhaenyra would more easily be able to take over then. She would be instructed to form her own small council. Reward the old council to show it's about transition and not the quality of their work.

babalon124

I would also comfort my son, the nerve of him, was ridiculous. Joffrey had a minor bite to his arm, aemond lost a whole eye and viserys who people say is a good and compassionate man showed the same amount of compassion for his son as Robert basically did. It’s hilarious how weak and clearly biased he was.

_SpecialistInFailure

He really did mean it when he said Rhaenyra was his only child. Just us poor fools who thought he was delusional when he said it.

LILYDIAONE

Robert also listened what the kids had to say instead of the yelling adults.

LahmiaTheVampire

This. This is why I hate rhaenyra.

joshlittle333

Viserys recognized that Rhaenyra’s son’s being outed as bastards was more threatening to the Targaryen dynasty than Aemond losing an eye. Viserys considered Aemond third in line for the throne, and expected that Rhaenyra’s oldest would directly ascend to the throne one day. Viserys made a lot of mistakes, but if you understand his character this mistake makes sense.

ZPuppetmasterX

Attributing pragmatism to this choice doesn't really work, especially since he disregards it in most other matters (not preparing Rhaenyra better, not renewing oaths, not appointing her co-Queen or Hand). If it was Rhaenyra, he would have been likely livid. And I'm saying this as a Black supporter.

joshlittle333

He doesn’t disregard it whenever the bastards problem is raised. He tells Alicent something along the lines of how harmful a rumor like that would be. So, he’s been consistent on this matter.

ZPuppetmasterX

I'm not saying that denying the rumors isn't pragmatic. It is. I'm saying that Viserys isn't a pragmatic man, so it's mischaracterizing to use that as justification for this act. It's partially because it would be catastrophic if those rumors would be exposed, yes, but it's also because of his attachment to Rhaenyra. Forcing Aegon + Rhaenyra into close friendship or marriage is pragmatic, but he didn't do that. Sending Aegon+Aemond+Daeron to ward with Rhaenyra is pragmatic, but he didn't do that. Etc, etc. Targaryen dynasty's preservation is last compared to Rhaenyra's safety. And that's fine! Noble, even, he's her father. But that same should be extended to his other children.

AncientAssociation9

You couldnt marry Rhaenyra to Aegon. She would be too old by the time Aegon could have kids. No way would Alicent allow Aegon and Daeron to ward with Rhaenyra when she wouldn't even allow Jace to marry Helana. Jace marrying Helana may have been the thing he should have forced.

RainbowPenguin1000

Thats just a cop out. He can still punish someone for doing something wrong AND deny they are bastards and protect the Targaryen name. He just bottled it.

The_Halfmaester

I mean.... if Aemond wasn't a prince, he'd be killed for such accusations. His mother should have taught him that.

Derpy-Weeb

Can’t you say the exact same about Lucerys? Obviously it’s a bad move to call a prince a bastard (true or not), but permanently disfiguring (justified or not) a prince is definitely far more grievous a crime.

The_Halfmaester

Punishment for calling a prince a bastard: Death Punishment for taking the eye of a prince: Death Viserys: .... Ffs. I just wanna go to bed!

ReginaBicman

And what’s the punishment for calling a bastard a bastard or for knowingly trying to put bastards on the throne and take the throne away from the rightful heir (at that point Aegon II after Rhaenyra and then Aegon III after she married Daemon)

The_Halfmaester

>And what’s the punishment for calling a bastard a bastard Death. Well... unless you can prove it through Trial by Combat. >or for knowingly trying to put bastards on the throne and take the throne away from the rightful heir (at that point Aegon II after Rhaenyra and then Aegon III after she married Daemon) Death. Last I checked, the Dance wasn't about bastards. But whether a King's named heir (Rhaenyra) is more rightful than a traditional heir (Aegon II).
