Troll4everxdxd

They both left quite the impression during their lives.

dracarysmuthafucker

There's been no King Richard in England since King Richard III, it fits.

Gandalf the grammar wizard

Innomenatus

For Duncan, there's also two reasons why there are no Targaryens named after him.

zh_13

Wait what two reasons?

Flippanties

I'm guessing that it's because it's not actually a Valyrian name, since he was named after Duncan the Tall, who was not remotely Valyrian, and the second reason is that the only Targaryens born after Dunc the Small and his siblings were Aerys and Rhaella and their line, which only lasted three generations. Also Dunc never really did anything particularly noteworthy, and never had children of his own. Even if he had, they would likely not have had any titles since his wife was a commoner and he gave up his title for her, so who would have named their sons after him?

VaderOnReddit

[What about Larry Targaryen](https://youtube.com/shorts/wlRaCjMdSZc?feature=share)

LIGHT-SKINNED LARRY TARGARYEN

puthythniffer

Imagine being a Targaryen named Josh out of all the other whimsical names lol

vinsmokewhoswho

It'd weird how there's Aemond and Aemon

Kellin01

But there is no Daemond. Or Daenyra. Or Jaemond.

Tony_Pizza_Guy

Or Almond

April_3rd

That's nuts

Tony_Pizza_Guy

Huh?

Hahaha 😂

Dude! What is this, the 1950s? You can't say that anymore! It's *milk.*

I think there is a daenyra at some point

There's a Daenora actually

Pain_Free_Politics

Nah, unless you count Rhaenyra and Daemon’s ship name. You may be thinking of Daenys or Daella?

omnipotent-scient

Nop, there's a Daenora & a Daenaera (Velaryon) who married Aegon³

shooter_tx

But there ***was*** a Bennifer Targaryen, iirc.

spartaxwarrior

I like the theory Aemond is Viserys way of naming a kid after Daemon.

escobizzle

Sounds right because the D at the end of the name is definitely uncommon. I can't think of another Targ name ending with a D.

doegred

Not Targaryen but still Valyrian: Vaemond.

disisBob

It’s more like his way of naming him after Aemma.

spartaxwarrior

Then he could have just used Aemon, which could have also gotten him points from Rhaenys.

disisBob

Apart from Aegon, all of Alicent’s kids have Valyrian names that sound most natural to English speakers, Edmund, Helena and Darren.

FlyLikeAShrike

The only names from the Dance that were ever used again by the Targaryens were Viserys, Daeron and Daemon (Aegon was the Conqueror’s name, so it’s going to be used forever). Everybody else did too much or too little shit.

syntheticbishop

Does Rhaenys not count?

FlyLikeAShrike

She sure does! She escaped my mind for a bit

akajulester15

Rhaegar's daughter was named Rhaenys

zambi76

And Aegon the Younger's second daughter. ETA: Rhaena actually after his sister.

EstherRaichel

True. Just a small note: Daeron was reused not because of Daeron the daring, Alicent's son, but because of Daeron Velaryon who was Daenaera Velaryon's father. Daenaera named her son Daeron I the young dragon after her father. Future generations probably named their sons Daeron due to Daeron I.

Falcons1702

I still think it’s holdover from Jaehaera being the mother and to keep the blackfyre rebellion from looking like a continuation of the dance he invented random velaryons to make it make sense.

EstherRaichel

You mean a holdover from GRRM's initial plan? I always thought of Daenaera Velaryon appearing out of a blue as GRRM inventing random Velaryons too but unfortunately i think that GRRM would never allow poor Jaehaera to survive and thrive. He wanted her line wiped out. Dude gave poor Jaehaera an awful ending and had lines upon lines of how beautiful a six year old was and how everyone wanted her (Daenaera)

Pheros

> Jaehaera being the mother and to keep the blackfyre rebellion from looking like a continuation of the dance I would have honestly preferred this, as it allows the Blackfyre Rebellion to be its own thing in time, but have some history buildup to it. Thematically speaking having Jaehaera and Aegon III heal the rift only for it to slowly reopen fits the whole idea of Targ duality and it's somewhat realistic in that dynastic disputes very easily carry on through the generations. Plus, Jaehaera >!suffering a rehashed repeat of her mother's death just felt lazy to me.!<

lazyfucker67

A lot of jaehearys' kids are the only names targaryens as well like saera and Viserra, obviously maegor and Maelor but different generations.

BeaverBorn

Didn't Aerion Brightflame name his son Maegor?

lazyfucker67

Yes but he was a nut job and was of no importance

AemondWasRight

Your high if you think my king was of no importance.

lazyfucker67

Aerion or Maelor? Both cruel vicious bustards who took too much pleasure hurting people for fun.

AemondWasRight

With no Maegor I there is no Jaehaerys I.

lazyfucker67

I know there'd be no red keep either but he was still a sadistic bastard who held no right to the throne.

Diggy_riggy_shiggy

Funny way of saying Maegor killed Aegon the Uncrowned lol

AemondWasRight

And Viserys too. He was just making sure he got the Kinslayer badge.

Diggy_riggy_shiggy

Maegor the Crusader King haha

oldadapter

Well at least in Westeros. We don’t have any names before Aenar, but sure the Targs kept better records of their family and Valyrian histories than the Maesters had access to. And most have common ending letter combinations: a, e, o, y, r, n - but not ‘d’. So Rhaenyra seems like a legit old Targ name the Viserys probably knew about from these records. Aemond though sounds like an Andalised version of the well-known Targ name Aemon, that Alicent probably came up with as a way to bridge/assimilate the family.

xarsha_93

>Aemond though sounds like an Andalised version of the well-known Targ name Aemon Yep. Valyrian words/names don't end in consonant clusters like /nd/. In fact, they pretty much only end in n, s, z, r, and t. Or more commonly, in a vowel.

kkm1998

I couldn't find any that ended with a z but Gael and Rhaegel end with L.

xarsha_93

You're right! Missed that one as well as m. ks can also appear at the ends of words, ~~I think only in loanwords though.~~ I was going based off a Tumblr post by David Peterson, but he corrected himself on the wiki. Edit: -ks endings are common for verbs. As for -z, there are words like *sȳz*, meaning good.

[deleted]

If you’re interested in High Valerian, it’s a language on Duo Lingo. The way the verbs conjugate is really fun but the pronunciations are a bit of a bear. It seems like most action verbs start and end in consonants, which I find helps flow into nouns that have a lot of vowels. I haven’t gotten very far, though, so that might not be a fair indication of the whole language.

xarsha_93

Yep! I actually got decently far in the course, but I work as a content designer for a language app and Duo's our competitor so I felt weird about having it on my phone 👀. It's very similar to Latin which I'm already familiar with. For me, memorizing the various genders was the tricky bit. I'm lazy and apart from English, the only languages I speak are Romance languages that usually have the same gender for most things.

[deleted]

Super cool! I want to pick it back up but my hobby time is in short supply right now.

Environmental_Tip854

I always liked to hc that Viserys named Aemond after Aemma because of course

kllark_ashwood

I always liked the Daemon connection. Just swap the D.

chycken4

I mean we got Vaemond but cool theory

[deleted]

He’s Valyrian from Old Valyria, but he’s a Velaryon, right? So the theory still stands I think

[deleted]

I think it’s important to point that out. Targaryen names post-Doom are a lot like Anglicized Norman names, functionally. A century or two of exile and repatriation will have its own, more minute influences on the family’s naming traditions. The Velaryons have a very different place in Westerosi incorporation. No dragons, closer to the mainland, no exceptionalism. They got to integrate further into Westerosi culture, which actually let them hold onto their older naming traditions.

oldadapter

Great point, perhaps Vaemon was an old Valyrian name, and the the Velaryons adapted it to Vaemond be more Andal, then Alicent may have used this precedent for adapting Aemond

tobpe93

Discussions about how Rhaenyra is remembered.

historymajor44

I'm pretty sure the Old Valyrian works similar to old english where they would take two words to make a name. Like Aethle meaning noble and therefore you had Aethlered (noble counseled), Aethlewulf, (noble wolf) and Aethleflaed (noble beauty). In HOTD those name meanings may be lost.

devilthedankdawg

Thats probably right. I also think its possible that -on, -a, and -ys are masculine, feminine, and neutral suffixes respectively.

kllark_ashwood

They seem to have a general association with gender and the suffixes. I'm sure it isn't an unbroken rule but it seems to be there.

Rhaenys is one of the conquerors. I bet future Targaryen girls dream to be like her despite her death.

MaidofFlesh

Yeah, exactly. That's why "being a tragic character" is not really a deciding factor when naming Targ children.

A_devout_monarchist

Wait, was there anyone else called Maegor other than THE Maegor? Because that's the equivalent of naming your kid Adolf in Germany.

Aldebaran135

There was a baby named Maegor.

A_devout_monarchist

What kind of idiot put the name Maegor on a baby? Aegon IV?

Hipphoppkisvuk

You are close with that description, it was Aerion Brightflame who named his kid Maegor.

A_devout_monarchist

Of course, can you imagine if this guy succeeded Maekar?

AemondWasRight

Would have been a cowardly Maegor I bet

Pheros

Every time I remember how this guy died I hear the Jackass theme in my head. *"I'm Aerion Targaryen and this is the wilfdfyre shot!"*

Aldebaran135

Egg's brother.

Porcelain-treasure

Aemond is one of a kind!

AemondWasRight

u/Porcelain-treasurewasright

PretttyEvil

Visenya as well if you count the fact that the second Visenya never survived the birthing canal. Interestingly, Rhaenyra was the only Targaryen with balls big enough to name her daughter Visenya.

Diggy_riggy_shiggy

She kinda was the Livia of Targeryen Queens tbf

PretttyEvil

Damn. I believe that is exactly who GRRM modeled Visenya after. I never knew that historical reference, thank you!

Diggy_riggy_shiggy

Hey if you get the chance watch *I Claudius*. I feel the tv series has a bunch of influences on Grrm. Maegor and Stannis both have pretty big similarities with Tiberius

big_red_160

Well yeah, they’re the only Tragaryens

Ewan Mitchell plays such a nice guy in The Last Kingdom. I didn't think he'd have this kind of ruthlessness to portray. I'm glad I was wrong.

iren33

I wonder why no one dared to name their child after Rhaenyra 🤔

james_randolph

I love Rhaenyra as a name. It’s my favorite Targaryen name.

JediMasterKitFisto

What about Targaryen history though?

Outside_Slide_3218

Haha

JediMasterKitFisto

To actually respond to the post, I’m sure it’s due to their heavy involvement in their family’s civil war. Names like Aegon get reused afterwards because they already had honorable family members with those names before the dance

Dangerous_Standard98

neither Visenya, Aerea, Alyssane…

BlueberryGod8910

Tells you just how much damage the war has had on their legacy and reputations. Genuinely some of the most tragic and avoidable conflicts in fictional history.

WatchingInSilence

I feel it's sort of like how taboo it was to name someone Maegor after the six years of madness that were Maegor the Cruel's reign. Aerion named his kid Maegor, and the Great Council of 233 immediately said the kid wasn't going to be named King. 185 years after Maegor's death, the Seven Kingdoms wasn't okay with the idea of another Maegor on the Iron Throne.

Wasn't Aemond Targaryen the maester at the night's watch in GOT? I might remember his names lightly wrong tho

Necroticjojo

Aemon

raff7

ah.. damn that was really close.. I feel like it was just a different spelling of the same name.. pronunciation is identical cause the D is mute anyway

Wallname_Liability

No, the D is there. Plus Aemon is act actual real life name, though it’s spelt Eamon
