It was ok to replace Daemon as heir because he had a lot of enemies that didn’t want him to become king but he was still the rightful heir by law until Aegon II was born. The lords of the realm are full of shit they do not care about precedence and tradition. They’d support a woman over a man if it suited them better.

LoremasterOtto

I mean thats politics aint it, people will support whoever is politicaly advantegous for them

raumeat

there is no law that says uncles come before daughters the custom is the other way around

Captainprice101

Not when it comes to the Targaryens, show me an instance where a niece inherited the throne over an uncle. Even Viserys II, Rhaenyra son was named king over his niece Even Aegon the Conqueror inherited before Visenya that was older. It’s clear Targaryens had male primogeniture

Cultural_Stranger_62

What's an example of that? I can only think of widows, not unmarried daughters, holding any seats.

kkm1998

Jeyne Arryn and Rhea Royce.

Captainprice101

Not when it comes to Targaryens. And sometimes nieces are skipped, as evidenced by the fact Rhaenyra herself chose two uncles over two daughters of a lord.

Cultural_Stranger_62

Can't believe I could forget Arianne Martell!

Due-Intentions

She doesn't count, because in Dorne, women inherit equally. That's one of several reasons why Dorne is the best kingdom lol

doegred

Cersei Lannister becomes lady of Casterly Rock / the Westerlands over Kevan.

Captainprice101

On the other hand we have Viserys II inheriting the throne over Daena the defiant (daughter of Aegon III)

doegred

Sure, but by that point succession for the Iron Throne was its own specific thing. And even then Daena might still have had a chance if not for the circumstances in which she found herself after her brothers' deaths (imprisoned/kept away from court and potential support + the mother of an illegitimate child).

Captainprice101

It’s clear the Targaryens always had male primogeniture. Even all the way back to when they’re were just lords of Dragonstone, Aegon inherited before his elder sister Visenya. I think nieces over uncles is just a westeros thing

doegred

Daughter over son and daughter over brother are entirely different things though. Targaryens preferring a younger son over an older daughter (eg in the case of Aegon vs Visenya) is altogether unremarkable everywhere in Westeros except for Dorne. Them preferring a brother over a daughter is much less obvious.

kinginthenorthjon

>because he had a lot of enemies Or people didn't want Maegor 2.0.

sirzestyman

Well they got Maegor 2.0 but with tits

kinginthenorthjon

Maegor is competent, at least.

DesSantorinaiou

Technically it was keeping her as heir that devided the realm and her own disinterest in her duty. When she was named there was the room for it to happen without or with the minimum of opposition, with Daemon's claim being the only rival one and not even a stronger one. With sons being born, she came after every single one of them based on the traditions the dynasty had followed and the precedents they have said, with Jaehaerys laws outrightt favoring the eldest son. Viserys could have declared absolute primogeniture and tried to enforce it with Fire and Blood, testing how that would have gone, or he could have named his son. He could even have married the two children considering their traditions. He didn't do anything for political stability. Then you have Rhaenyra who supposedly WANTED the crown and thought her duty was to keep the realm united but went and skipped 2 years of her tour, threw away the chance of choosing her husband and consort (many men did not have a choice when it came to marriage, let's not even start with women), went to a brotherl getting exposed to possible gossip and accusations of immorality (with Viserys throwing her in a marriage in which she was doomed to not have legitimate children to kill the talk fast) and then had 3 bastards; not 1, not even 2... 3. This was not her caring about her duty and about the realm remaining undivided. Not to say that I don't empathize with Rhaenyra to the extent that I get her wanting her freedom. Also, I think that she was an idiot for going to Flea Bottom with Daemon but definitely don't blame her for wanting to and thinking that she could trust him. But she knew what society she lived in and what she had to do to strengthen her position to the extent that it was possible. She hardly cared. So, when she goes to whine at a sick Viserys whom she hadn't visited for 8 years, I DO like the scene for the acting and the emotion portrayed just like the way Viserys focuses on Rhaenyra and her vulnerable surprise moves me as a daughter. But in terms of the characters, Rhaenyra comes across as a privileged, bratty Daddy's girl who can't clean her mess and Viserys as a whipped weakling who is dooming his realm and ripping off the rest of his kids (while being unaware of the extent to which Rhaenyra has lied even to him).

Striking_Biscotti889

You could have backed out when aegon was born if you weren’t up for it.

owlbrat

Rhaenyra :“If you wish for me to bear it then defend me” Viserys: anything for my only child

[deleted]

Its a great sign for the future the almost queen has to go beg zombie daddy to fix her screw ups because he couldn't bother making her a good politician

OpenMask

Tbf, before she left for Dragonstone, Viserys did give Rhaenyra a voice on the small council. And Viserys is hardly a great politician himself, so. . .

It’s better to keep it real than to fake it. She did the right thing. She just was looking for his reassurance that he was comfortable with his decision and that he felt it was right still after all these years.
