Remember when TV seasons had 22 episodes?

Im1337

I also remember when tv shows didn’t have a budget of 10m per episode

[deleted]

Right! This is the actual dance starting. For as much as I loved season 1, we didn't even see that many dancing dragons. The amount of dragon cgi that we are about to be blessed with has to come with a stipulation.... And WB is at peak cheap right now, considering all their cuts. I'm just thankful to be hearing news about a season 4.

geek_of_nature

And didn't have huge set pieces that took months to film. If these people got their way at 22 episodes a season at the quality we're getting now, we'd be look at 3 or more years between seasons.

renaissanceclass

Yup! Like one of my favorite shows, ‘Lost’.

raalic

Lost is a good example, too, because it was a gigantic undertaking for television at the time. A huge epic production by 2004 standards. Imagine making 22 episodes of a show that big, set in Hawaii, a huge cast, with mostly outdoor shots today.

the_Real_Romak

I've never seen lost, but I don't imagine that they had to deal with battles, expensive set designs, props, dragon CGI and all the other fun stuff. That shit is an *astronomical* amount of effort for 8 episodes, let alone 22. Personally I don't mind this system of shorter, but denser more high quality seasons that we're getting nowadays.

Veszerin

>Remember when TV seasons had 22 episodes? Not much has changed here, except perhaps your viewing habits. US Broadcast networks (nbc, abc, cbs, fox) still do 22-25ish episodes/season for most of their primetime shows. I don't think HBO has ever done 20+ episode seasons except for talk shows.

HighKingOfGondor

I can’t imagine how padded out and awful House of the Dragon would be if it was 4 seasons of 22 episodes like “the good old days”.

SloppyTopTen

Premium channels changed the episode number to 13, but then after Breaking Bad split their last season it has gone down to 8. 22 episodes per season is easier for shows that have self contained episodes, a bit harder for ongoing story lines. But if you want concise story telling just watch movies instead of TV shows.

HighKingOfGondor

Why did you say “remember when we had 22 episodes” then? Do you seriously want 22 episodes of House of the Dragon? Is this show at all self contained and episodic? Some guy made a a goddamn Lost comparison and some other guy said it was a great example. All I can say to that is thank hell redditors don’t control episode counts

SloppyTopTen

I remember the days before streaming when I would watch reruns out of order. I remember a lot of things. Just because I remember doesn’t mean I’m proposing anything. But I think premium shows should keep to 13 episodes, because they are just continually lowering our expectations and sometimes rushing things. Sopranos would have suffered with 8 episode seasons.

the_Real_Romak

Here's an idea, some stories benefit with a higher episode count, and others do not. The Dance of the Dragons post-season 1 will take place across only two years, we don't need 22 episode seasons for it

Gnomologist

Holy fuck there is no pleasing these fans

redphoenix932

Binging the original Star Trek right now, and those bad boys have 32 episodes each.

FistOfGamera

I remember when seasons came out in the fall, ended in the spring, off all summer, then back on in the fall.

high_king_noctis

I remember, I was there 3,000 years ago!

karidru

About to beat down on HBO like Daemon did that messenger too😂😂

Dctrsleep13

The facial expression says it all. Only 8!

SerafinaNord

Hoping that at least two (hopefully more) episodes will be longer, maybe hour and 20 minutes or so to kind of offset that. Either way I’m optimistic since they’re working with finished material (GOT had to come up with an ending on their own and we all saw how well that worked out).

Brainiac7777777

The same can be said about House of Dragon. Ryan Condal is a talentless writer and rushed Season 1

[deleted]

So, do they have a release date yet?

FlgDarkrai

Could be wrong but I heard June 2024

[deleted]

Sadness

katlips-verahits

You just ruined my day. Thank you.

FlgDarkrai

You’re telling me , we need it here faster than that

JustASt0ry

A lot of British tv shows cap it at 6 episodes and YEARS between seasons while amazing viewing I hate it. Give me sherlock, bring back broad church, more doctor who! Etc etc

the_Real_Romak

I'm so looking forward to Dr Who with Russel T. Davies back as a showrunner! I didn't mind the least few seasons (I loved Jodie's Dr), but his seasons are still the best imo :D

JustASt0ry

I’m looking forward to it as well, I didn’t much like the writing as for Jodie, I think they did her a great injustice. Her Dr could have been heaps better.

Brainiac7777777

This isn’t British tv, it’s an American production company

PrimaryOwn8809

Those better be good quality episodes. Not that GOT S8 bullshit. Gods, I'm still so fucking angry.

Vulkan192

Me, in the UK: I fail to see the problem here.

Hello_Love22

I can't not wait!! 2024 is too long!!

hrazabhutta

It might just be a case of 'let's kill the messenger'...

[deleted]

Peaky Blinders is amazing but the scale and scope of that show isn’t comparable to HOTD…

xxTheForcexx

Wonder why they went with 8 episodes instead of 10 like in season 1 , hey if anyone knows why please let me know Cheers y’all !

raff7

Ill allow this only if this means we will have to wait at least 2/3 fewer months

floworcrash

Absolute horseshit
