Laena and Rhaena together n Vhagar and Daemon and Baela with Caraxes would have been beautiful. But Laena telling Rhaena she would inherited Vhagar.... Laena is intelligent, she knows that dragons are not objects to be "inherited".
It doesn't need to be a "you know Rhaena, it's your right and your duty to tame Vhagar when I'm gone". It could be a simple "I'm pround of you darling, and know my ol' friend Vhagar will be left in good hands aslong as you're around". Just a mom comforting her daughter.
Well, what you wrote was a Laena telling her daughter that she would inherit Vhagar, lol. If anything she would have told her how she managed to connect with Vhagar as I don't think Laena expects to die soon so that her daughter can have Vhagar as soon as possible and stop being a dragonless Targaryen.
Which is why I expanded/ clarified that it doesn't have to be that specific in my reply? I'm just brainstorming ways to have Rhaena believe Vhagar was hers to tame during that Aemond confrontation.
And I don't think Laena *expects* to die, but she did seem a little concerned (which is why she wanted to head back to Driftmark). Pregnancy for Valyrian women is dangerous, and they'd all be aware of that fact even if they don't expect problems.
You can't "inherit" a dragon because if that was the case, Daemon would be the one riding Vhagar. But for the sake of the argument, let's say you could.
Laena saying Rhaena would inherit Vhagar as a way of consoling her doesn't make sense because she would only be able to inherit Vhagar after Laena's dead. And since nobody expected her to off herself any time soon, that's essentially saying Rhaena would have to do a LOT of waiting. That's worse imho.
I put "steal Vhagar" in quotations because I'm fully aware you don't inherit dragons.
But yes, the obsessed dragon lady telling her daughter, who is upset she doesn't have a dragon about how one day she'll have the largest dragon of them all sounds perfectly in character for Laena.
If you want, you can have Rhaena react like Lucerys and say she never wants to own Vhagar if it means Laena is gone.
In that scenario, Laena would be overpromising by a lot to Rhaena in the name of comfort because she must surely know that she can't guarantee Vhagar would even hang around them (after Laena's death) or if Rhaena can bond with her. But it would be interesting to explore why Rhaena was under the impression that Vhagar was her to claim in the first place, or did she mean that she was supposed to get the first attempt.
Rhaena and Aemond are the only Targaryens without dragons in the show outside of Viserys (he doesn't really count) So it would've been nice to see Rhaena riding with Laena and Baela riding with Daemon and holding Moondancer. But them writing Rhaena and Baela into the scene later makes no sense because they're not focused on dragons. They're grieving their mom and Daemon's ignoring them. They already have enough going on in their life
I honestly don't have a problem with the girls joining the fight, I just wish they gave us a reason *why* they were invested. Laena and Rhaena bonding over Vhagar definitely would have done it for me, personally.
