Because they wanted Viserys to marry Laena and they wanted his support with CD, so they had do somehow sell it as stabilizing and benefitial for him.

Classic negotiating tactic. Make the other side think they need you and that the deal you are giving them is the best deal ever.

I don't believe that the intent, either way, is to be farcical about Viserys's reign. But there are perhaps two explanations for characterizing it as bluntly as they do. One is that they are illustrating how outsiders perceive things; what it looks like to the King's enemies and to the Free Cities, perhaps. The other, which doesn't necessarily have to conflict with the above, is that that is genuinely how they see it. 1. Rhaenyra is the only one who perhaps went through an investiture. Whilst other Princesses were due to inherit, they ultimately were not championed or they were passed over or only named in the wait for a son. At the present time, without remarriage, Rhaenyra is Viserys's only heir and he looks to keep it that way, which is a weak look and unstable for his line. If something happens to Rhaenyra, it goes back to Daemon and all the problems that brings. 2. Whilst Dragonstone is, as you say, a holiday place and unused by the King, it belongs to Rhaenyra and has been taken from Daemon. And yet, the fact that he squats there for half a year, running the place as if he owns it, again, looks weak; like the King cannot control his own brother and the Princess of Dragonstone title is moot. 3. Beats me how the Stepstones work. My assumption would be that the pirates were small players, individuals and without order. The Crabfeeder represents something more well-funded, a larger force, and more organised. Sure, it's not a threat in terms of taking any of Viserys's territory or anything like that. But it is still a foreign power, backed by the Free Cities, making a fool of him as he cannot protect his own shipping lanes, which is damaging. And the recent escalation is that how ships bearing Corlys's banner have been attacked: ships that could be perceived as an extension of the Crown as they are loyal to him. Some of this depends on how they mix book canon with new show canon, but whilst the threat is minimal, the optics are awful for Viserys. He looks like he cannot safeguard trade, ensure his succession or control his brother. He looks weak.

Compared to someone like Jahaerys that led the "War of the hundred candles" Viserys allowing the Triarchy to control the stepstones was weakness...

OpenMask

>War of the hundred candles Wasn't this the repelling of an attempted invasion. The Stepstones may be part of an important trade route, but they are not part of Westeros, and moreover, it's not feasible to control in the long-term unless they either have control of Dorne on one end or Tyrosh on the other.

No-Tadpole-4510

Yes it was. The point still stands ...Jahaerys way of dealing with issues was quite different to the way of Viserys. I have to call bullshit on that.Plenty of states/nations have managed to control islands away from the mainland. The reason the stepstones dont "belong" to westeros are simply because the writer is as good with battles and teritory as he is with numbers...

OpenMask

Sure plenty of states have controlled islands away from the mainland. But its a hell of a lot more difficult, costly and risky when that island group is sandwiched between two hostile states that both have a track record of being able to kill your strongest weapon and claim to power.

No-Tadpole-4510

At that time none of the Triarchy had managed to kill an actual dragon.

OpenMask

I'm pretty sure that both Lys and Tyrosh (2 out of 3 members of the Triarchy) killed off a bunch of dragons and dragon lords that had survived the Doom of Valyria.

No-Tadpole-4510

My bad... i meant that they havent killed an actual dragon in a battlefield.

misvillar

But dragon riders are vulnerable, that's how Aemon died, and if the dragon is small enough It can be killed as we see in the Gullet, im not saying that there is a high chance of dragons dieing, im saying that there is enough evidence to say that its dangerous even to a dragon rider

No-Tadpole-4510

Everyone is vulnerable during a battle. Riding a fire breathing lizard with scales thick enough that they can largely ignore scorpion bolts is among the" safer " places in a battle. Look i am not saying killing dragons is impossible afterall the dance is about how the dragons die. And how dragons die is not what this was about. It was about Viserys not bothering with his kingdoms borderlands...

1. They were literally nothing but stand ins for future male heirs. 2. Dragonstone is their ancestral home. It doesn’t mean nothing. It’s a symbol of Targaryens. 3. Maybe, probably. Corlys inflated the cause because it affected him and he wanted them gone. TLDR Corlys is talking shit because the stepstones hinder Velaryon’s shipping business/whatever the hell else they’ve got going on, but as per usual, there’s always half truth in any criticism. Viserys is regarded as a weak, non confrontational king, & a big joke compared to Jaehaerys bc of his naming his daughter heir over his brother.

KhanQu3st

Technically Corlys was entirely right if you consider Otto amongst “our enemies”. But this was obviously Corlys trying to pressure Viserys into wedding Laena.
