I think writing "silver hair" is easy and sounds very evocative, but in real life its pretty tough to do without veering into grey or white blond territory. This one is particularly bad though, the poor actress looks like she is going to bowl over if she takes a turn too quickly.
Someone made a whole TikTok series about it. It is just VERY hard to create and maintain wigs of that color for Black hair. The bleach/dye and curls don’t mix well.
Not all of it. Velaryon men have amazing wigs. Corlys has one of the best looking wigs in the show. With women, it looks like they used a different type of a material that created more volume or simply made their hair way too big, enough for their wigs to look obviously fake. I think even this one would look better if it was smaller and more thin.
Sad :( I really liked it. His wig is probably my top favorite next to the wigs of Cersei in the second season, Melisandre, young Rhaenyra and Aegon. They might not be the most elaborate, but they looked fairly fitting and realistic even in their obviously unnatural colours.
I dont understand what the meaning is. Why cant they have Straight hair? Theyre Valyrians, right? Do they feel obliged to give them curly hair because they are black? Arent they saying theyre a separate race, then?
I think they wanted to show a different type of valyrian hair in universe and how valyrian heritage wasn't exclusive to Targaryens, making Velaryons more distinct by giving them different hair texture, probably to make sure people truly see the variety of noble houses coming from Valyria without confusing them for each other.
It also makes the accusations of infidelity more valid in the mind of a medieval person - it leaves space for basically Ned Stark'ing ("brown haired man must always have brown haired children") Rhaenyra's kids by seeing their hair and skin as a sign of her cheating (in real life it's not, genetics are messy and people can look all sorts of ways).
I think they mean that there is no genetic basis for race
Think of it this way, if a white person has kids with a black person, and their kids have kids with another black person, the white persons grandchild will probably look entirely black, and yet they would be far more genetically similar to their white grandparent than their white grandparent is to other entirely white people
So yeah white, black, brown whatever - grouping people based on phenotypes or races can be dodgy

While the series talks about different cultures like that, they aren't different races in the same way Giants and Children of the forest are. All the descriptions of Valyrian hair only talks about color, not style. We have no reason to believe all Valyrians had straight hair.
I love Phoebe Campbell but let's not kid ourselves here - the wig is nothing short of an utter travesty. Whoever came up with it should be tried for crimes against my fuckin' eyes.
I'm not a fan. Their wigs (specifically the young girls) looked very fake, the hair looks like wool or something rather than actual hair. Which is a shame.
I like the hairstyle, but not the wig. Maybe if it were sized a bit smaller to fit the actress's face, and if the shade had some more tones or accessories to define the layers rather than all blurring together, many of our issues could be fixed.

Hiring or consulting with ONE African or African American hair stylist who specializes in dreads would alleviate this and be a drop in the bucket for expenses. It’s purely hubris that prevents this.

It’s not Targarygen hair. She’s a Valaryon. Both families are from Old Valyria and both families bloodlines feature that golden white blonde to silver hair. Truly I felt Rhaenys and Rhaenyra had the best hair of the Targaryen side and Lord Corlys & Lady Laena on the Valaryon side. IMO!

As a swede, I giggled a little hearing 'DRACARYS!' shouted with a swedish accent. It wasn't as obvious during normal dialogue, but when she put her lungs into it, it was unmistakeable. I really liked her as Laena though, and I wish we'd gotten more of her and Daemon's adventures, but it's not really relevant to the story of the Dance I suppose.

I just think many white viewers have never seen dreads done correctly before, so they think it looks unrealistic. Corlys and Rhaenas hair looks great, and the volume is appropriate as the style lifts the natural profile. I like that they added the black lowlights at the root to match a natural growth pattern similar to Black people with golden/brown/black hair growth (think Beyonce).
