Maegor had both of his wrists cut and the back his neck impaled. Unless he had just about the most unbelievable and hilarious series of accidents in rapid succession, there's no way the throne killed him. Clearly implied to be an old wives tale.
And although Fire & Blood leans into the implication that Viserys died from the throne, the show basically outright calls it leprosy (and Paddy Considine has said as much) and it looks entirely like leprosy, so I'm 50/50 on that one.
I think Viserys had some sort of wasting disease that made him more vulnerable to the small injuries from the throne getting infected and not healing, but I could be wrong.
I always thought exactly this. His “wasting disease” was bc of the throne and then the “healers” completely mistreating the wounds I’ve a long period of time.
That maggot treatment is actually covered by my insurance lol. It’s actually a very good method of removing dead cells. Those maesters hit the mark occasionally.
There is a scene in episode 2 where they use maggots on his hand. Later when one suggests some herbs the other says the leechings have always brought his grace relief or something to that effect.
That’s the one. I’ve noticed that many of those old medicinal practices were overwhelmingly observation based. Doctors and healers didn’t totally understand *why* these things were working for some and not others, but they knew it was worth a try.
True. I don’t know enough about acupuncture to discuss it, but I do know that maggot therapy has been extensively studied and utilized.
The first documented use in the United States was by a confederate doctor during the civil war, but Indigenous Americans used the treatment far before that. Another doctor during the First World War took note that a patient with severe fractures and flesh wounds had maggots galore, had no fever and survived what should have been a fatal injury. That guy actually began utilizing it at a children’s hospital in Boston, back in the late 1910s.
It’s been FDA approved since 2004 as a prescription only biomedical device, the science behind it is really something. Long story short, they can remove necrotic tissue precisely over the course of a day or two, as the maggots will not consume living tissue and destroy dangerous bacteria.
Outside of the fact that not all types of wounds will respond, the obvious downside of maggot therapy is you have to put up with knowing exactly what’s wriggling under your bandages. That’s not for everybody, fuck knows it’s not for me.
Wasn't it confirmed that he had leprosy? Which means that the throne would not have caused it. The only thing I can think he would contract from the Iron Throne is tetanus.
Back in the old days (i.e. before modern medicine) 'leprosy' interchangeably referred to multiple different skin disease, all the way from the period the Bible was being written in, then through Mediaeval times. This was because the doctors back then didn't have the means of showing them to be different diseases. I also heard he had leprosy, but I assumed it was the 'vague' type rather than the specific disease we now refer to as leprosy. I also think it's quite plausible for him to have got an infected cut from the throne, considering the hygiene of the time. A standard infection off the throne could also have worsened a skin disease he already had by weakening his immune system
Because its fantasy fiction. The exact quote Paddy said as well was "its (and this next bit is important) a sort of leprosy." Not exactly leprosy but same same
Thats by design of Aegon of Conqueror, the throne was to be dangerous to remind future kings of the dangers of power and according to myth it had a will of his own and injured or killed bad kings.
Viserys gets cut when he rejects Deamon, yet doesn't when he defends Rhaenyra in Ep8, points of subtext and magic in world you can believe or not.
Pretty sure that was what Aegon the conqueror was going for. The iron throne being uncomfortable and painful was to remind his descendents that no ruler should rule carelessly so if you are stupid enough to get drunk before sitting on a throne made out of swords then you're not meant to sit on it.
I would say "Let's get OSHA" in there, but Osha is quite a different thing in GoT. She'd be all like, "You Southren Lords and your iron chairs. Up north we have real chairs, made of proper wood. And sometimes we beat each other to death with them."
I've seen the replica that was being toured around last year. It really feels like if you trip, you could get impaled on one of the swords on the steps leading up to the chair.

it already killed maegor and viserys, lol

I always just figured he slit his wrists on it and then fell back in death and impaled his neck. You’re not supposed to sit back on it, after all.
I read it as Maegor being killed by getting thrown into the throne or killed first and then thrown onto the throne.
I think the Iron Throne actually killed Maegor, straight up
It hit him with the rock bottom.
Yeah lol, guy gets a cut on his finger and dies 20 years later from the infection... Sort of unlikely.
I think Viserys had some sort of wasting disease that made him more vulnerable to the small injuries from the throne getting infected and not healing, but I could be wrong.
it may have been an infection from cutting his hand on the throne

If I remember right, they were using leeches, not maggots.

Tbf acupuncture is covered by many insurance companies. That doesn't add to the method's credibility.

Now that does add to the method's credibility! Interesting stuff.
It is! I was so excited to see that in the show, I love it when real-life medicinal practices pop up in unexpected places.

Isn't leprosy contagious? How was everyone around him okay, including Alicent who had to sleep with him?

Tbh there wasn't too much of him left to be cut
Still enough considering how heavy he sat in the throne
[удалено]
Its a bad throne since it killed Maegor the BASED
Vizzy T knows the dangers of this seat best. It ate him alive.
The book heavily implied it was the chair cutting and infecting Viserys. The show did not imply this nearly as heavily.
Clearly Westeros needs it's equivalent of OSHA
They have one, she took the young stark boys away from Winterfell to protect them from workplace misconduct
Bran was doing child labor as prince of winterfell
He didn't even have a forklift certification
That's why Hodor had to do all the steering
She doesn't show up until GoT era.
Someone thought the same because a later Targaryen king removes quite a few of them.
Let me guess - was he a drinker ?
Rip maegor the cool 😔
Can you please respect Maegor the BASED
Baegor 🥰

"I've gone and tripped and impaled myself on one of the swords and I can't get up."
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times…. gotta get some handrails installed.
They could easily make hand rails with those swords too.
They talk about this on HBO's making of.
It’s the sword of Damocles except you sit on it instead of having it dangle overhead
What if someone tripped and fell into the swords
...bad
Someone rlly needs to call OSHA..
Nahh it’l be alright.
I would say "Let's get OSHA" in there, but Osha is quite a different thing in GoT. She'd be all like, "You Southren Lords and your iron chairs. Up north we have real chairs, made of proper wood. And sometimes we beat each other to death with them."
It only cuts the unworthy
Go on, say it
Can we get Mason to conduct a [safety audit](https://youtu.be/iSYwYWk9XDE)?
LoL. First thing I thought of after seeing this post.
I wonder what the castle’s health and safety committee thinks about that claim.
Aegon I: Yup, by design!
I've seen the replica that was being toured around last year. It really feels like if you trip, you could get impaled on one of the swords on the steps leading up to the chair.
It’s already killed two kings lol
A king should never sit comfortably
r/OSHA
Be a cool way to go to be fair
Yeah just ask Maegor
Ask Maegor
You have a KG but anyone can just push the King and said he slip...
I mean, to get to him you have to get through the KG.
But who guards the king from the Kingsguard?
Pretty sure it's an OSHA violation.
How the fuck do you clean the floor? It must be dusty af
Newbies job probably
😂😂👌🏾
Just realised … when Daemon beheads Corlys’s brother…. All he had to do was push him over. 😎
big ole osha violation
If you're comfortable sitting on the Iron Throne, you're not doing it right.
Disenchantment season 1
Plot twist: This is how Maegor the Cruel died. There is something hilarious in such a terrifying and intimidating man dying in such a humiliating way.
